The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to study, describe and improve the understanding of voluntary driven libraries. How does the library staff view their role? How is the library operation working in respect of economy, organization structure and systems of rules? Research methods I used were semistructured interviews and document research. The theoretical framework was based on Joacim Hansson´s discussion about libraries in a local community, Henning Bang´s discussion about organization culture and the Swedish government´s non- profit advisory group`s discussion about voluntary work. The results of this study shows that the library staff are enthusiasts motivated by a wish to spread literature to people who find it difficult to visit municipal libraries. Other motives for their voluntary work is the opportunity for being a part of a social community, to be surrounded by books and to activate body and senses. The results of this study also shows that the voluntary library system differ from the traditional, municipal library system concerning economy, organization structure and set of rules.
