Beslutsstrukturer vid Digitaliseringsinvesteringar: En Liten-N-Studie
2026 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesisAlternative title
Decision Structures in Digitalization investments : A Small-N-Study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines how decision structures for digitalization investments are designed in practice. While prior research has established that decision structures affect the outcome of IT investments, most studies have been quantitative and focused on statistical relationships rather than describing how organizations concretely organize their decision-making processes. Using Weill and Ross’s (2004) IT governance framework as an analytical lens, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five respondents from different organizations representing various industries, roles, and a mix of public and private sectors. The findings show that all organizations combine several decision archetypes across different decision domains, and that the size of the investment is the primary factor determining which decision path is activated. A common weakness identified across all cases is the lack of systemic post-investment value tracking. Six shared challenges were identified, the most prominent being the trade-off between control and the speed in the decision process. By including an implementation perspective, the study also reveals a gap between decision-makers and implementers where information about business value and follow-up does not always reach those who execute the decision. The study contributes descriptive insights into how decision structures function in practice, complementing the predominantly quantitative research in the field.
