Artificial Intelligence in SMEs : A Qualitative Study on Innovation (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
This study investigates how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) use artificial intelligence (AI) in their innovation processes. The study was conducted through a qualitative analysis based on four respondents from three companies, forming the foundation for the analysis. The analysis is structured around the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), a theoretical framework that helps to understand how new technologies are accepted and used within organizations. The results show that AI is used both as a creative tool in innovation work and to streamline existing workflows. The respondents describe how AI functions as a sounding board during the idea phase – for example, by generating drafts, structuring thoughts, or creating new perspectives in code, text, or design. This type of usage demonstrates that AI can play a key role in enhancing human creativity rather than replacing it. Although there is a strong intention to use AI, several practical obstacles are perceived. Lack of resources, time, or structural support are recurring themes that affect how far AI can be utilized. Companies with clear guidelines and certifications, such as ISO 42001, tend to use AI in a more systematic and strategic way. The results of the study show that Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU) and Perceived Usefulness (PU) are high among the respondents, which, according to TAM, increases the likelihood of actual use. At the same time, there is a need to complement TAM with organizational and ethical perspectives, as trust in the technology and the management of data integrity affect user attitudes. In conclusion, the study establishes that AI functions as a versatile resource for idea development in SMEs, but realizing AI's full potential requires strategic support, competence development, and clear ethical guidelines. The study provides new insights into how AI can be used to support innovation and identifies important directions for further research, especially within organizational learning and business model innovation.
