Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction – The construction industry is characterized by high demands, time pressure, and complex projects, which represent a growing problem of work-related stress among civil engineers. The aim of this study was to examine how stress is experienced within different professional roles, to identify which work-related factors contribute to stress, and to identify differences between levels of experience.

Method – The study was conducted using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Five semi-structured interviews were carried out with civil engineers in different professional roles, complemented by a survey with 42 respondents. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis and statistical summaries.

Results – The results show that the study participants representing the professional roles of site supervisor, structural engineer, construction engineer, tender manager and site manager experience work-related stress, but that the causes vary depending on their responsibilities and tasks. The main stress factors are primarily high workload, time pressure, unclear roles, lack of communication, and late changes in projects. The results also show that the newly graduated participants in the study mainly experience stress related to uncertainty, while more experienced participants experience stress related to responsibility and decision-making.

Analysis – The analysis highlights that work-related stress among the chosen civil engineers in this study develops due to an imbalance between the level of influence individuals have over their work situation and the high demands and expectations placed on them by the company. The study’s results indicate that poor planning, unclear responsibilities and roles in projects, as well as drastic changes during projects, are contributing factors to work-related stress among civil engineers.

Discussion – The results of the study confirm previous research showing high demands and time pressure in the construction industry but also demonstrate that stress is experienced differently between professional roles. The perception of having control over one’s work varies between situations and may explain some of the variations in the results. Stress can also affect the balance between work and private life and may in the long term contribute to mental health issues. Keywords – stress, civil engineer, construction industry, professional roles, work related stress, work environment, stress factors
