Product Development in the Context of Extended Producer Responsibility : A Qualitative Study of a Knitted Sweater and Proposed Adaptations to Meet Future EPR Requirements (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The fashion and textile industry is undergoing significant changes as a result of the EU’s revised Waste Framework Directive and the introduction of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which assigns producers responsibility for the entire life cycle of textile products. At the same time, uncertainty remains regarding the design and implementation of national EPR systems, limiting companies’ ability to prepare effectively for future regulatory requirements. Purpose: The primary aim of this study is to investigate the product development process of a knitted product within a Swedish textile company and to examine how the company is working to address future requirements associated with EPR, with a particular focus on recyclability and circularity. Method: An inductive research approach employing a qualitative methodology was adopted. Empirical data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The data collection was based on a purposive sample drawn from a Swedish e-commerce company operating within the fashion and textile industry. The choice of interview method enabled respondents to answer the research questions with a high degree of interpretive freedom and without restrictive response frameworks. Results: The findings indicate that the product development process is characterized by strong cross-functional collaboration; however, sustainability- and EPR-related considerations have not yet been fully integrated into operational decision-making processes. The majority of respondents emphasize that material selection is primarily driven by commercial, functional, and aesthetic requirements, with fibre blends representing a particular challenge for future circularity. Furthermore, supplier collaboration, digitalization, and improved product data management are identified as key prerequisites for future EPR compliance, while knowledge gaps and unclear allocation of responsibilities may hinder a proactive transition. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that future EPR requirements necessitate the early integration of sustainability and recycling considerations into the product development process. Key challenges include fibre blends, organizational fragmentation, and limited knowledge regarding recyclability. The language of this paper is Swedish.
