Repair as a Circular Strategy within the Denim Industry : A Case Study of Opportunities and Limitations in a Small Fashion Company (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study explores repair as a circular strategy in relation to denim products, focusing on the opportunities and limitations involved in implementing a repair system within a smaller fashion company. Repair is frequently highlighted as a key strategy for extending product lifespans within circular fashion. Far less attention has however been directed toward how such systems can function in practice, especially within smaller companies with limited resources and without access to larger recycling infrastructures. The study is based on a qualitative case study consisting of five semi-structured interviews with representatives from the case company as well as individuals with academic and industry-related expertise within the textile and fashion sector. The findings suggest that repair is perceived as a more realistic circular strategy for the case company compared to larger take-back systems or textile recycling initiatives. Several practical challenges nevertheless emerged regarding logistics, reverse flows, quality control, economic scalability and the organizational demands required to maintain repair systems over time. The study also highlights how repair in relation to denim differs from large parts of the fashion industry, as signs of wear, ageing and repair can contribute to a garment’s perceived authenticity, emotional value and identity rather than reduce it. Consumer attachment, aesthetic perception and long-term relationships to products therefore become important factors in the success of repair practices. The study concludes that repair systems within smaller fashion companies need to be adapted to the company’s resources, customer relationships and brand identity in order to function in practice. The findings further indicate that denim holds particular potential for repair-based circular strategies, since long-term use, ageing and visible wear are often integrated into the products aesthetic and cultural value. Furthermore the study deduces that a second hand reselling service should be adapted as a complement to the repair system to further the lifespan of products.
