The Repair Paradox : Repair Services as a Pathway to Circular Business Models (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The increasing environmental impact of the textile and fashion industry has created a growing need for sustainable and circular business models. At the same time, today’s consumer culture is characterized by mass production and short product lifespans, where consumers often prioritize purchasing new clothing instead of repairing existing garments. Although repair services are highlighted as a central part of the transition toward a more circular economy, these services are still used to a limited extent. This has resulted in a repair paradox, where positive attitudes toward sustainability are not always translated into practice or reflected in actual consumer behavior. Against this background, the study aims to examine how repair services can contribute to the development of sustainable and circular business models within the fashion industry, as well as which factors influence consumers’ use of these services. The study seeks to investigate both consumer and business perspectives in order to create a deeper and broader understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with repair services. To investigate this, a combined methodological approach consisting of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods is applied. This has been carried out through surveys and semi-structured interviews. By combining different perspectives and data sources, the study addresses issues related to sustainable consumption, circular economy, consumer behavior, and the future development of business models within the textile and fashion industry. Consequently, the study aims to contribute to an increased understanding of the role that repair services can play in the transition toward a more sustainable and resource-efficient fashion industry.
