Fabric Softener: Textile Care or Textile Damage? A Study of the Impact of Fabric Softener on the Mechanical Properties of Loosely Woven Cotton Fabrics and its Relation to Customer Complaints. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate how repeated use of fabric softener during washing affects the seam strength and the strength in the fabric surrounding the seam, regarding goods made from interlaced double-layer plain weave cotton fabric with a loose structure. The aim of the study is also to analyze consumer usage of fabric softeners in order to determine whether the results can help explain complaints regarding garments made from this material. The research questions address how consumers use fabric softeners in washing woven cotton garments, how seam strength and seam slippage of interlaced double-layer fabrics are affected after repeated washing with fabric softener and how these findings can relate to customer complaints. The theoretical background covers cotton mechanical properties, fabric softeners, their interaction with cotton materials and seam defects in loosely woven fabrics. The study uses a quantitative approach consisting of a survey and experimental tests of seam slippage and seam strength (ISO 13935-1:2014; ISO 13936-2:2004). The results support previous research indicating that loosely woven fabrics have lower seam strength and a higher tendency for seam slippage compared to denser plain weave fabrics. At the same time, the study shows that fabric softener is used by nearly half of the respondents, but that its effect on the strength in the seam and in the fabric around the seam of the tested materials does not follow a consistent pattern. Therefore, these findings do not establish whether the repeated use of fabric softener primarily influences these properties. Instead, the results suggest that material construction and fabric seam interaction play a more significant role in determining seam strength and resistance to seam slippage. The study contributes to the understanding of factors that may lead to customer complaints and the development of more durable garments.
