An attentive room : An observational study of the speech milieu for the youngest at Malmö stadsbibliotek (English)
Abstract [en]
The aim of this study is to see what the interaction between the library environment, the youngest children and their adults look like. Further how the library environment can be understood as a factor for stimulating the children's language acquisition. The study’s chosen method is participant observation. The results of the study show that the interaction between space and visitors takes many different forms – both bodily and linguistic, physical and verbal. We see that the space and the movement within it inspire speech, but also how speech can encourage and instruct movement within the space. Our conclusion is that space and bodies become part of the language, in a kind of play where things take on new functions and fictions. While observing, we see how children and adults put words to their own and each other's doings – but also how language seems to instruct and create action.
