Does reading promotion have an age limit? : A critical discourse analysis of the position of adults in library shaping national policy documents (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze three of the documents that shape reading promotion within the Swedish library system. The study focuses on how adults outside any of the prioritized groups are positioned in these documents. This position is then compared to the prioritized groups within the Swedish library system. The study is based on three different documents, published between 2018 and 2019, that we analyze with the help of Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis. The results show that there is not enough focus on non-prioritized adults when it comes to reading promotion in Sweden, as the goal of the promotion simultaneously often seems to be an educated and well-informed participant of a democratic society. Furthermore, while the development of reading promotion within the policy documents usually includes adults as well as other groups of people, the actual work is mainly directed at young people. In addition to that, the other prioritized groups are not as prominent as young people are. Our finding is that the adult population is often referred to as an “important area of development” within the Swedish library system, but that there are no actual plans in place for this development.
