Look what you made me buy : An investigation into public librarians' work with purchase suggestions (English)
Abstract [en]
Purpose: This study investigates how Swedish public librarians handle purchase suggestions from the public and how they view their work with purchase suggestions to better understand what factors affect decisions about purchase suggestions and views on user participation in public libraries. Methodology and theoretical perspective: The empirical data comes from semi structured qualitative interviews with four public librarians that work with purchase suggestions who answered questions about how they work with suggestions, what factors affect their decisions and how they view their work. Theoretical professional practice was used to understand how the participants knowledge, experience and values affect their work practise. Findings: The results show that the participants value the purchase suggestions highly and appreciate them as insights in what the public are interested in which aids in the work to adapt the library to the needs of the users. The participants also value the input from their colleagues highly and see the collaboration between librarians as the most important resource in decisions about purchase suggestions. The participants also value their experience and describe how they use experiences from former situations to make better decisions. Help from colleagues and former experiences is seen as more important than governing documents or knowledge from education, which are both not frequently used in decision making for purchase suggestions.
