This master’s thesis examines how issues of race, racism, neutrality, and professional identity are articulated within Swedish library discourse. The study is situated within a Swedish context characterized by a strong colour-blind discourse, where racism is acknowledged as a social problem while the conceptual language traditionally associated with race often remains contested or avoided. Against this background, the thesis investigates how racism is discussed, negotiated and legitimized within a professional library debate. The study is based on a critical discourse analysis of articles, opinion pieces, and debate texts published in Biblioteksbladet and Magasin K during 2019–2023, in connection to discussions surrounding Milia Rahman Olsson’s bachelor’s thesis on the experiences of non-white librarians. The analytical framework combines Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis with Critical Race Theory (CRT) and the concept of vocational awe. The analysis identifies three overarching discursive themes: An experience-based discourse, a norm-critical discourse and a counter-discourse. The results show that conflicts within Swedish library discourse concern not only whether racism exists, but also how racism may be named, described, and interpreted. Questions of neutrality, professionalism and inclusion emerge as central sites of discursive struggle. The findings further indicate that the library’s professional self-image as democratic, neutral and inherently good may limit the space for structural critiques of racism within the profession. The thesis contributes to library and information science by highlighting how language, professional ideals and institutional norms shape the conditions for discussing racism within Swedish library discourse.
