"It would have worked really well without them too” : An interview study on school librarians' understanding of their role in promoting literature, and the reading lists from the government (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate school librarians' perceptions of their own competence in literature mediation and their approach to the reading lists composed by the authorities Skolverket and Kulturrådet and the Swedish cultural canon for the task of promoting reading. The study uses Andrew Abbott’s theory of professions as well as the concept of an autotelic versus instrumental view on reading and was conducted using semi-structured interviews with five school librarians. The study identifies four themes in the empirical material: profession and competence, tension between school and culture, literature mediation, and media monitoring. The results show that the school librarians lack formal training in literature mediation, but they note the importance of reading for pleasure for students. Furthermore, they experience that their working hours do not match the complex workload of their profession. Finally, while the reading lists are used in different ways, the school librarians do not view them as an essential tool.
