The Frontend Developer’s Professional Role in Relation to AI : A Study of Representations in Industry-Related Texts (English)
Abstract [en]
This study examines how the professional role of the frontend developer is represented in relation to artificial intelligence (AI) in industry-related texts. The focus is on how the role is described through work processes and competence. The aim is to understand how AI is connected to a specific digital professional role. The empirical material consists of twelve publicly available industry-related texts published between 2024 and 2026. The study was conducted as a qualitative document study, and the material was analysed using thematic analysis. The results show that the frontend developer’s role is represented as changing in relation to AI. AI is described both as something that creates uncertainty about the role and as a tool that can support and change development work. The work process is described as shifting from mainly producing code or design towards instructing, coordinating, reviewing and evaluating AI-generated outputs. The results also show that AI-related competence is described as more than technical tool use. It includes understanding AI’s possibilities and limitations, giving clear instructions, structuring work, and critically evaluating AI-generated results. The study concludes that AI is represented not only as a technical tool, but also as something that affects how the frontend developer’s work, responsibility and competence are understood.
