Ambulance nurses' experiences of caring for children with cardiac arrest in the prehospital environment : A qualitative interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Paediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrests is rare but complex and stressful, placing high demand on medical competence, prioritisation and the ability to support families in crisis. Previous studies show that situations involving children cause high stress and mental strain. Ambulance personnel are at high risk of developing mental health problems from experiencing traumatic events at work. Knowledge about ambulance nurses' experiences in these situations is limited. The purpose of this study was to explore ambulance nurses' experiences of these situations. The study was approached with an inductive qualitative design, where ten specialist trained ambulance nurses were interviewed. The data was analysed according to qualitative content analysis, which generated nine sub-categories and three main categories. The results showed strong stress reactions and insecurities in the ambulance nurses but mental and practical preparation, clear routines and support from colleagues and other professions contributed to feelings of control and safety. Meeting with families was further experienced as difficult and the ambulance nurses had to prioritize between life-saving interventions and giving families the opportunity to participate. After the cardiac arrest ambulance nurses experienced emotions such as sorrow, emptiness and mental exhaustion as well as needing rest. Collegial support was described as particularly important, while employer-support was varied between the different cases. This study concluded that pediatric cardiac arrests are often associated with emotional strain for ambulance nurses, both before and after the event. Continual education, routines and support are important factors for handling these events well in a sustainable way.
