Always needed, never finished : A qualitative study on female leaders with young children and their work-life balance (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This qualitative study examines the experience of work-life balance among female leaders and mothers. Based on Hirdman's (1988) gender system, Clark's boundary theory (2000) and Greenhaus and Beutell's (1985) work-life conflict theory, the specific demands and expectations that can affect women's balance are analyzed. Furthermore, the strategies that women apply to create and manage this balance are explored. The empirical data has been collected through seven semi-structured interviews with female leaders with small children. The central finding is that it is the possibility of mental disconnection that affects balance to the greatest extent. The results also show that this experience of balance is not a static state, but rather changeable and situational and is influenced by demands, responsibilities and expectations in both roles. At the same time, the results indicate a relatively one-sided influence, where work affects private life to a greater extent than vice versa. The results indicate that the fact that women have small children does not constitute an obstacle to good balance, but rather functions as a prerequisite for creating clear boundaries between work and private life. Furthermore, the women describe both practical and mental strategies that are important for both creating and maintaining balance. These strategies appear to be crucial when the absence of, or difficulties in applying them, coincided with a poorer perceived balance.
