Konst och kultur har kommit att betraktas som viktiga delar av vårt välmående genom hur de bidrar till vårt identitetsskapande och till de sociala platser där människor möts. Statistiska rapporter har dock visat att delaktigheten i kulturen till stor del beror på var en bor och var kulturinstitutionerna finns. Alla svenska kommuner ska enligt lagstiftning ha minst en kulturinstitution; biblioteket. Denna studie undersöker hur två bibliotek i en mindre svensk kommun arrangerar kulturprogram och vilka sociala infrastrukturer som uppstår mellan biblioteket och dess ort när konst och kultur erbjuds på biblioteken. Genom en kvalitativ fenomenologisk studie har rapporter från dessa platser samlats in genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med biblioteken och dess samarbetspartners, samt vid observationstillfällen. Biblioteken i studien och deras kulturprogram blir viktiga kulturhubbar på orterna, såväl som omsorgsfulla sociala infrastrukturer, där närheten till verksamheter och varandra gör det naturligt att mötas och samverka. Biblioteken i studien betraktar sina kulturaktiviteter som betydelsefulla delar i att hålla det lokala hoppet vid liv, och deras samarbetspartners betraktar biblioteken och dess kulturaktiviteter som viktiga platser för hopp, relationsbyggande och meningsfullhet på orterna.

Arts and culture are considered vital parts of our wellbeing, contributing to our identity-making and to the social spaces where people meet and connect. However, statistical reports have shown that cultural participation largely depends on where the cultural institutions are situated. Swedish municipalities are required by law to have at least one cultural institution: the library. This study investigates how two libraries in a rural Swedish municipality arrange culture programs and what kind of social infrastructures emerge between the library and its community when art and culture activities are conducted. Through a qualitative phenomenological study, reports from these places were collected using observational elements and semi-structured interviews with the librarians and their collaboration partners. The libraries and their culture programs serve as important cultural hubs, as well as caring social infrastructures, the proximity in the communities making it natural to meet and connect with people and local organizations. The libraries in the study consider their cultural activities as parts of maintaining local hope, and their collaboration partners consider the activities at the local libraries as valuable places for hope, connection and meaningfulness.
