Cancer är en av de vanligaste dödsorsakerna i Sverige och medför ett mångdimensionellt lidande som påverkar patientens fysiska, psykiska, sociala och existentiella välbefinnande. När sjukdomen inte längre är botbar övergår vården till palliativ vård med fokus på bland annat symtomlindring och trygghet. I livets slutskede ställs höga krav på sjuksköterskans förmåga att förebygga lidande genom närvaro, empati och professionell kompetens. Syftet är att belysa sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att vårda patienter med cancersjukdom i livets slutskede. Studien är en litteraturöversikt av kvalitativ design. Analysen baseras på åtta kvalitativa studier som resulterade i fyra huvudteman. Det första temat innefattar vikten av att lindra specifika behov, sjuksköterskans förhållningssätt och hur vårdandet kan bidra till meningsfullhet för sjuksköterskorna. Det andra temat belyser utmaningar i vårdandet, såsom emotionell påverkan och organisatoriska hinder. Det tredje temat beskriver sjuksköterskors förutsättningar och kunskap där både erfarenhet, brist på utbildning och stöd framkom som centrala faktorer. Det fjärde temat framhävde teamarbetets betydelse och anhörigas delaktighet. Slutsatserna visar att vård i livets slutskede behöver präglas av ett helhetsperspektiv där lindrat lidande och skapa bekvämlighet står i fokus. Sjuksköterskans närvaro, professionella förhållningssätt och lyhörda bemötande gentemot både patient och anhöriga framträder som centrala i vårdandet. Vidare påverkar faktorer såsom klinisk erfarenhet, utbildning och fungerande teamsamverkan sjuksköterskans möjligheter att bedriva personcentrerad vård och tillgodose patientens behov i livets slutskede.

Cancer is one of the most common causes of death in Sweden and entails multidimensional suffering that affects the patient’s physical, psychological, social, and existential well-being. When the disease is no longer curable, care transitions to a palliative approach with a focus on, among other things, symptom relief and a sense of security. In the end-of-life, high demands are placed on the nurse’s ability to prevent suffering through presence, empathy, and professional competence. The aim of this study is to illuminate nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with cancer in the end-of-life. The study is a qualitative literature review. The analysis is based on eight qualitative studies which resulted in four main themes. The first themeemphasizes the importance of relieving the patient´s specific care needs, the nurse’s approach and how caring contributes to a sense of meaningfulness among nurse´s. The second theme highlighted challenges affecting care, such as emotional burdens and organizational barriers. The third theme described nurses’ prerequisites and knowledge, where both the importance of experience, lack of education and support emerged as central factors. The fourth theme emphasized the importance of teamwork and the involvement of the patient´s relatives. The conclusions show that end-of-life care needs to be based on a holistic approach, with a focus on relieving suffering and supporting the patient’s well-being. The nurse’s presence, professional attitude, and sensitive care toward both patients and their relatives are important in the caregiving process. In addition, factors such as clinical experience, education, and teamwork affect nurses’ ability to provide person-centered care and meet patients’ needs at the end-of-life.
