The Digital Bridge Between Home and School : A Mixed-Methods Study on Accessibility on Primary Schools' Websites (English)
Abstract [en]
Sweden’s increasingly multicultural society includes many students with guardians whose first language is not Swedish. Parental involvement is crucial to children’s educational success, and much of this now occurs through digital platforms such as school websites. This study investigates how accessibility issues, particularly in website information structure, navigation, and multi-lingual support, affect communication and engagement between schools and guardians. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines a survey with 22 guardians whose first language is not Swedish and a content analysis of five public school websites. The results reveal recurring barriers: limited or malfunctioning multilingual options, unclear navigation structures, and outdated or incomplete information. While many respondents reported sufficient Swedish skills, these structural and design-related issues still limited their ability to access and use information effectively. The findings highlight the importance of clear and consistent information architecture, accessible navigation design, and functional multi-lingual features to ensure access and foster stronger digital communication between home and school.
