Operating room nurses' experiences of interprofessional teamwork in the operating room (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: The intraoperative phase of surgica lcare represents a critical component of operative nursing and is characterized by a complex, high technology, and time-sensitive environment where multiple professions collaborate to ensure patient safety. The operating room nurse holds a central position within the team and applies specialized expertise in perioperative nursing to promote a safe and efficient surgical process. Deficiencies in collaboration among professionals during the intraoperative phase may increase the risk of complications, mortality, and patient suffering. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore operating room nurses’ experiences of teamwork within the surgical team during the intraoperative phase. Method: The study was conducted as a literature review with a systematic approach. In total 12 articles with a qualitative approach were included in the study. The articles were analyze dusing thematic analysis aiming to identify recurring themes and patterns within the findings. Results: Several different factors influenced the operating room nurses’ experiences of teamwork within the surgical team. Three main themes emerged from the results: Team dynamics and relationships in the operating room, Communication and collaboration for patient safety and Work environment and stress in the operating room, and eight subthemes. Conclusion: Mutual respect, clear communication, equal team members and a work environment that encouraged them to speak up, emerged as crucial factors for achieving good collaboration. In contrast, poor communication, hierarchical structures and disrespectful behavior caused obstacles to effective collaboration. These factors hindered implementation of safe perioperative care and increased the risk of patient suffering.
