To wait for what does not happen : A literature review of the patients’ experience of cancelled surgeries (English)
Abstract [en]

The amount of globally performed surgeries continues to increase, yet an estimated 18% are being canceled by administrators and patients alike. This contributes to emotional and financial hardships for all involved. Furthermore, there is a connection between cancelled surgeries and patient reported suffering. That may be eased by attentive personnel, which recognizes the vulnerable situation the patients’ in. The aim of this study is to gather and analysis data of adult patients’ experiences of cancelled surgeries. The method used was striving to entail the steps of a qualitative systematic literature review with a thematic data analysis but to the extent of a master thesis level. The results encompass three themes and seven sub-themes. The themes were Consequences of the cancelled surgery, Factors that facilitate patients’ acceptance of cancelled surgeries and The impact of information on patients’ experience of cancelled surgeries. Information could potentially ease patient-related mental distress and increase patients’ acceptance of cancelled surgeries. Consequently, prolonged waiting times with a prolonged period with symptoms has negative impact on patients’ daily lives, psychosocially and financially. The way doctors and nurses communicate with patients about surgical cancellations may damage patients’ confidence in the health care organization.
