Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Companies' environmental sustainability efforts have gained increasing influence in today's society and partly shape how customers perceive and relate to brands. This study examines how companies' environmental sustainability efforts affect customer loyalty through semi-structured interviews with thirteen individuals of different ages and backgrounds, in order to gain a deeper understanding of their perceptions. The results show that sustainability is a relevant factor for many consumers, but not a decisive one when it comes to making a purchase decision. Instead, factors such as additional services, product quality, price, and previous experience tend to carry more weight. However, credible and honest sustainability communication can increase trust and thereby strengthen customer loyalty. The study also finds that greenwashing or perceived greenwashing can lead to mistrust and weaker customer relationships. Environmental sustainability thus functions as a contributing factor: not always decisive, but something that can make a difference when basic consumer needs are already met.
