AI and Web Development : a Qualitative Study of a Profession in Transition (English)
Abstract [en]

This study examines how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the work tasks, competence requirements, and professional identity of web developers in Sweden. Using a qualitative approach, five semi-structured interviews were conducted with professionals in web and system development. The findings show that AI tools such as GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT streamline routine tasks like code generation and testing, allowing developers to focus on creative and strategic aspects of their work. However, the study also reveals that AI introduces new demands, including critical evaluation of AI-generated content, prompt engineering skills, and ethical considerations. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of technological determinism and Explainable AI (XAI), the analysis indicates that while AI reshapes workflows and broadens professional roles, it functions more as a complement than are placement. The results suggest that future competitiveness will depend on combining traditional coding skills with data analysis, user experience expertise, and the ability to collaborate effectively with AI systems.
