”The right person in the right place” : A study of collaboration between libraries and daily activities (within social services) (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate what opportunities and difficulties can arise in collaboration between public libraries and daily activity-centres according to the staff. Furthermore, there is an ambition to investigate how the staff from the different workplaces views a developed collaboration based on the conditions of each profession.

The method used is semi-structured interviews with staff from public libraries and daily activity-centres. Folkesson`s (2007) theory of three dimensions of collaboration, the professional dimension, the power dimension, and the legitimacy dimension, as well as Folkesson`s concept of “common professional object”, is applied in the analysis of interviews.

The study shows that most collaborations today are based on performing tasks that the participants in daily activity-centre can do for the libraries as well as reading activities and digital workshops. A common professional object, where each professions aims and competencies are made clear, is seldom pronounced. Focus is on the practical questions. Both professions express respect and trust for each others knowledge and competencies and are willing to learn more about the diversity of each profession which facilitates collaboration. The activities take place both in the libraries and in the daily activity-centres which increases the possibility of getting to know each other’s occupations. The results show that interpersonal relationships benefit collaboration and there seems to be an interest for closer cooperation. Lack of time is regarded as the main threshold by both librarians and staff in the daily activity-centres.
