Patient experience of existential loneliness (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Existential loneliness is a growing problem worldwide, and because of the potential suffering for the patient it is important for nurses to acquire knowledge about the phenomenon. In gaining knowledge about existential loneliness they could be more efficient in detecting existential loneliness and because of that also be able to help and support the patient appropriately. The aim of this study was to highlight the patient's experience of existential loneliness through a literature review with a qualitative design inspired by meta-synthesis. The data material consisted of ten qualitative articles. The analysis of these resulted in three themes: The importance of relationships and to be able to tell, When the lifeworld changes, and Gathering strength, which are presented in the results. The main findings highlight the difficulty for the patient to express their experience of existential loneliness as well as the struggle for others to understand their experience of existential loneliness. One of the findings also revealed that an important facet of the patient’s experience of existential loneliness is the caring relationship as well as meaningful conversations. Furthermore, a recurring theme in both the already existing literature pertaining to the subject, as well as the analysis presented in the study, is the fact that existential loneliness can be experienced as both negative and positive, despite often being thought of as something inherently bad. Solitude was identified as a contributing factor to recovery and development and as such could be important for the patient. One of the conclusions that can be drawn is the importance of increasing knowledge about existential loneliness for both nurses, the patient, and the general public. Another conclusion is the significance of creating and providing the opportunity for the patient to have meaningful conversations, and the impact the caring relationship can have on the patient’s experience of existential loneliness.
