Me, a Leader? : Challenges and Identity Formation As a Young Leader (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study explores how young leaders aged 18–30 experience and manage challenges related to their leadership identity. Conducted and written in Swedish, the study is based on qualitative interviews with ten young leaders from various industries, analyzing how they negotiate their role and legitimacy in contexts where age is often associated with a lack of experience and authority. The study is theoretically grounded in Leadership Identity Construction (LIC) and Implicit Leadership Theory (ILT) to highlight how leadership is shaped in social contexts and influenced by unconscious assumptions about what a “real” leader should be. The results show that young leaders often experience internal uncertainty related to their role and must balance between meeting traditional leadership ideals and developing an authentic leadership style based on personal values. To establish their legitimacy, they engage in clear communication, relationship-building and reflective learning from past experiences.
