This knowledge overview examines the subject of arts education both in and outside of Sweden, in order to gain a deeper understanding of what the subjects prerequisites are. By searching different databases for terms relating to arts education, six articles were found and colour coded to analyse their findings.
The results showed that there are three main groups of prerequisite for arts education: resources, status and competence. These prerequisites varied in importance, as resources was the largest factor for the arts subject in Sweden, while status was the largest factor internationally.
Interesting aspects within these results, such as the status of the subject in Swedish schools, were discussed. However, further studies of these aspects are needed in order to reduce the lack of research in the field of arts education.
