Navigating Trust Challenges : How Organizations Strengthen Their Legitimacy in Practice (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

As trust in organizations is increasingly questioned, their ability to manage trust crises and restore legitimacy has become a central area of research. This study aims to deepen the understanding of how organizations construct, rebuild, and maintain trust in times of crisis, with particular focus on the balance between genuine accountability and strategic impression management. Based on a qualitative multiple-case study of seven organizations in different industries, and drawing on eleven semi-structured interviews, the analysis explores managerial experiences and strategies related to crisis communication, accountability, legitimacy work, and institutional expectations. The study is grounded in institutional theory, using the concepts of legitimacy, isomorphism, and impression management as analytical tools. The findings indicate that trust-building efforts are often shaped by tensions between internal values and external pressures, where some strategies are perceived as symbolic rather than authentic. At the same time, transparency, consistent value-based practices that reflect accountability, and context sensitive communication emerge as key components in strengthening organizational credibility. The study offers new insights into how organizations practically navigate complex expectations during trust crises, and how these processes are shaped by both contextual and institutional factors.
