"Considering it, I probably read more than I think" : reading and library habits together with the conception of libraries among young male students at the vehicle engineering programme in an upper secondary school. (Engelska)
Abstract [en]

This master thesis deals with reading and library habits among young male students at the vehicle engineering programme in an upper secondary school. Also their overall opinion of libraries has been looked into. For the completion of this study all of the 43 students in question took part in a questionnaire while 5 of them were interviewed. The result of this statistical survey complemented with more focused interviews show that at some time or another all the students read, but their preference lies within the news and engineering pages of daily newspapers and periodicals. Those who read books choose action and fantasy for content. The majority of the participants in this study regularly visits and have a positive attitude towards libraries. Important sources to inspire reading are friends, school, title and summary of content at the back of the book. These students gain access to newspapers through their parents while they themselves subscribe for periodicals and borrow books from the school library. From the way the questions were asked and responded to, we have drawn the conclusion that the shown preference for newspapers and periodicals is due to the fact that this kind of literature is easy accessible, illustrative and updated. It is also possible that the reluctance for reading books has to do with other activities such as sports, music, computers and friends taking up their time. However, through the achievement of a fruitful interaction between these boys and their librarians, they will most certainly become future consumers of books.
