Abstract [en]

Sofas play an essential role in everyday life and are today used more intensively compared to earlier generations. This places a higher demand on their durability and long-term appearance, which both are largely influenced by the quality of the fabric. In recognition of the importance of fabric quality in upholstery products, this study was carried out in collaboration with IKEA. The purpose of this work was to investigate how different fabric attributes influence the drape behaviour of sofa fabrics with the goal of creating a value-ranking grid. The fabric attributes investigated were based on data obtained from IKEA, complemented by additional tests conducted in this study. The additional tests are fabric thickness, air permeability, crease recovery angle, shear angle and drape coefficient. The values obtained were used to do a correlation analysis and visualise the relationship between the drape coefficient and the attributes through scatter plot diagrams and line charts. The factors that were seen to have most influence on the drape behaviour were fiber content, elasticity in the weft direction, shear angle, fabric thickness and thread density in the weft direction. The results support the statement that the drape behaviour is a complex parameter influenced by both subjective perceptions and objective data. The findings in this report emphasises the importance of further research in this matter. Drape behaviour is of upmost relevance to predict, especially for companies with a wide variety of fabrics, to avoid errors when designing.
