Strike : From the Dark Satanic Mills to the Gig Economy
Abstract [en]

This is a book about strikes, from the birth of industrial capitalism until today. The chapters span geographically from Brazil to China, but the focus is on the Global North.

The book does not aim to give a comprehensive picture of the history of the strike. Instead, it dips in and out of history to illuminate a turning point, a principal question, a specific strike tactic or a succesful strategy by an employer.

The book takes the view that a strike is an expression of the most fundamental contradiction in capitalism: the one between buyers and sellers of labour power.
