Aeroelastic simulations of wind turbine using 13 DOF rigid beam model2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The vibration behavior of wind turbine substructures is mainly dominated by their first few vibration modes because wind turbines operate at low rotational speeds. In this study, 13 degrees of freedom (DOF) model of a wind turbine is derived considering fundamental vibration modes of the tower and blades which are modelled as rigid beams with torsional springs attached at their root. Linear equations of motion (EOM) governing the structural behavior of wind turbines are derived by assuming small amplitude vibrations. This model is used to study the coupling between the structural and aerodynamic behavior of NREL 5 MWmodel wind turbine. Aeroelastic natural frequencies of the current model are compared with the results obtained from the finite element model of this wind turbine. Quasi-steady aerodynamic loads are calculated considering wind velocity changes due to height and tower shadow effects. In this study, vibration responses are simulated at various wind velocities. The derived 13 DOF simplified model of the wind turbine enables to simulate the influence ofchange in parameters and operating conditions on vibration behavior with less computational effort. Besides that, the results of the simplified models can be interpreted with much ease.

Data-driven estimation of blood pressure using photoplethysmographic signals2016In: Proceedings of EMBC-16, 38th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Noninvasive measurement of blood pressure by optical methods receives considerable interest, but the complexity of the measurement and the difficulty of adjusting parameters restrict applications. We develop a method for estimating the systolic and diastolic blood pressure using a single-point optical recording of a photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal. The estimation is data-driven, we use automated machine learning algorithms instead of mathematical models. Combining supervised learning with a discrete wavelet transform, the method is insensitive to minor irregularities in the PPG waveform, hence both pulse oximeters and smartphone cameras can record the signal. We evaluate the accuracy of the estimation on 78 samples from 65 subjects (40 male, 25 female, age 29±7) with no history of cardiovascular disease. The estimate for systolic blood pressure has a mean error 4.9±4.9 mm Hg, and 4.3±3.7 mm Hg for diastolic blood pressure when using the oximeter-obtained PPG. The same values are 5.1±4.3 mm Hg and 4.6±4.3 mm Hg when using the phone-obtained PPG, comparing with A&D UA-767PBT result as gold standard. The simplicity of the method encourages ambulatory measurement, and given the ease of sharing the measured data, we expect a shift to data-oriented approaches deriving insight from ubiquitous mobile devices that will yield more accurate machine learning models in monitoring blood pressure.

    Abstract [sv]

Chemical and physical characterization and acid hydrolysis of a mixture of Jatropha curcas shells and husks2015In: Cellulose Chemistry and Technology, ISSN 0576-9787, Vol. 49, no 9-10, p. 737-744Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Jatropha curcas L. is a tropical plant with considerable potential for producing biodiesel and other products of high economic and social interest. During the biodiesel production process from J. curcas different residues, such as shells and husks are generated. In this work, the physical characterization of J. curcas fruits was performed, and the chemical composition of a mixture of shells and husks was determined. The physical characterization revealed that shells and husks account, respectively, for 25.0 and 27.8% of the fruit weight. The compositional analyses of the material showed a rather high content of glucans (32.8% w/w) and xylans (16.4% w/w), which indicates the potential of J. curcas shells and husks for production of ethanol, xylitol and other glucose- and xylose-derived products. Acid hydrolysis was applied to a mixture of shells and husks under different sulphuric acid concentrations (from 0.5 to 4.5%), temperatures (170 – 220ºC) and time (10 – 20 min), and the hydrolytic conversion of xylan was evaluated. A zone of experimental conditions giving maximal xylan conversion was identified at around 4% H2SO4, 180ºC and reaction time below 10 min.

High School Pupils’ Academic Achievement, Self-regulation (Locomotion and Assessment), and Psychological Well-Being2014Manuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Education plays an important role on a personal level because it is related to personal control, a healthy lifestyle, greater income, employment, interpersonal relations, and social support (Mirowsky & Ross, 2003). Self-regulation is the procedure implemented by an individual striving to reach a goal and consists of two inter-related strategies: (1) the identification of the desired out-come and the appraisal of procedures to reach the desired goal (i.e., assessment), and (2) the selection between available approaches to reach the goal and the commitment to the chosen approaches until the goal is reached (i.e., locomotion) (Kruglanski et al, 2000). Self-regulation plays an essential role in academic achievement (Kruglanski et al 1994, 2000). Psychological well-being is a multi-faceted concept composed of six different intra-personal characteristics that describe the fully functional individual (Ryff, 1989). These factors are: positive relationships with others, self-acceptance, environmental mastery, autonomy, purpose in life, and personal growth. We aimed to study the relationship between academic achievement and self-regulation and psychological well-being in Swedish high school pupils. Method: Participants were 160 Swedish high school pupils (111 boys and 49 girls) with an age mean of 17.74 (sd = 1.29). We used the Assessment and Locomotion Scales (Kruglanski et al., 2000) to measure self-regulation and Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scales short version (Clark et al., 2001) to measure well-being. Academic achievement was operationalized through pupils’ final grades in Swedish, Mathematics, English, and Physical Education. The courses take place during either one or two semesters and the grading scale ranges from F = fail to A = pass with distinction. Results: Final grades in Swedish were positively related to two psychological well-being scales: self-acceptance and personal growth; and to the self-regulation strategy of assessment. Final grades in Mathematics were positively related to three psychological well-being scales: self-acceptance, autonomy, and personal growth; and also to assessment. Final grades in English were positively related to one psychological well-being scale: personal growth; and also to assessment. Final grades in Physical Education were positively related to four psychological well-being scales: environmental mastery, self-acceptance, autonomy, and personal growth; and also to the self-regulation strategy of locomotion. Conclusions: A profile consisting of assessment orientation combined with self-acceptance and personal growth leads to the best study results. This understanding is important when supporting pupils in achieving the best possible results in school and thus lay the formation for a continued successful life.

    Abstract [en]

A poor delivery performance of machines and equipment creates problems throughout the supply chain for a construction project. If machines and equipment do not arrive in compliance with agreed upon time, it will cause downtime and delays at the construction site. The construction site will come to a standstill if not the right machines is at the right place, at the right time, in the right condition and in the right quantity. The purpose of the report is to identify which elements constitute the order process for rental of machines and equipment, as well as provide suggestions on how the elements can be improved to increase the reliability of deliveries to and from construction projects. With process mapping five elements of the order process have been identified, customer support, receiving of orders, processing of orders, deliveries and returns. To know the performance of the order fulfillment, measurements need to be introduced. Without metrics, it is difficult to know if machines and equipment arrive at the construction site correctly. Metrics also facilitate improvements in processes as it is possible to compare to previous measures to see if an improvement has been an improvement or just a change. If metrics on reliability from the Supply Chain Operations Reference Model is combined with practices and methods from Supply Chain Management the reliability of deliveries in the supply chain that supplies the construction industry with machines and equipment can be improved.

Munvård: Den eftersatta munvårdsaktiviteten2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Integration of Bluetooth-enabled sensors into E-health application for home healthcare and monitoring2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT nformation and telecommunication technologies have been used for medical applications for almost a century: the radio, the phone and the television have been used to provide medical assistance to remote areas like boats located in the sea, oil rigs and other isolated locations. This new use of ICT was given the name of Telemedicine. I Since the 90`s, health care systems have been looking for new ways and alternatives to provide health care than the traditional hospital centers. Information technologies and communication systems have been developed, especially with the deployment of Internet access to most of residential areas, and have brought health care to the electronic age; Carving a new term E-Health. Nowadays Telemedicine is used in several E-health applications for teleconsultation, telediagnosis, telemonitoring and has been successfully tested in teleradiology, telecardiology, teledermatology, telepsychiatry, etc. This technology is used in rural areas, health areas, prisons, home cares, emergencies, wars, etc. This project implements two different parts. The first one is an user application to measure weight and blood pressure from the patient using two Bluetooth-enable measurement devices: the UC-321PBT Precision Health Scale and UA-767PBT Blood Pressure Monitor. The second one implements a web server to store all patients reports with updated information in real time. This information can be consulted through a web page for medical staff in HL7 patient’s report format.

    Abstract [en]

rspective [123][pdf.gif] The aim of this thesis is to study the Swedish Public Lending Right PLR from the authors perspective. I investigate what the Swedish authors of today think about the system for distributing the money in the Authors trust Författarfonden, and in what ways they want to change it. I also try to distinguish the authors thoughts about how the scolarships from the Authors trust are distributed. What kind of authors do they think are favoured when the money is distributed and what kind of authors are treated unfairly. Finally I investigate how the money is shared out in reality by using some of the literature sociologist Johan Svedjedals theories of the distribution, and compare these facts with the authors thoughts about how the money is distributed. In this part of the study I also use the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieus theories of the literary field and his theories of taste. I decided to use questionnaires to gather the information. It turned out that the authors want a clearer system that is easier to inspect than the existing system. They want to preserve the thought of solidarity that characterize the system of today. The distribution of scholarships should be more dependent on authors literary production than on personal circumstances. There are authors that believe that authors who write a certain kind of literature are treated unfairly when the scholarships are distributed. Some authors also think that persons acquainted with members in the Authors trust are more likely to become holders of scholarships. Finally the study shows that authors connections with publishers, the kind of literature they write childrens literature/juvenile literature, non-fiction or fiction, and their places on the literary field, tend to influence the distribution of the scholarships from the Authors trust.

Effects of intravenous metoprolol before hospital admission on chest pain in susptected acute myocardial infarction1999In: American Heart Journal, ISSN 0002-8703, E-ISSN 1097-6744, Vol. 137, no 5, p. 821-829Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to describe the effect of intravenous metoprolol on the intensity of chest pain before hospital admission in patients with suspected acute myocardial infarction AMI). METHODS AND RESULTS: Two hundred sixty-two patients with acute chest pain and suspected AMI were randomly assigned before hospital admission to either 5 mg morphine plus metoprolol 5 mg x 3 intravenously or 5 mg morphine plus intravenous placebo. Chest pain was evaluated on a 10-grade scale before and for 60 minutes after intravenous injection. One hundred thirty-four patients were randomly assigned to metoprolol and 128 to placebo. Among all patients randomized to metoprolol, the mean chest pain score was reduced by 3.0 +/- 1.9 arbitrary units AU) from before to after intravenous injection compared with 2.6 +/- 2.1 AU for placebo not significant). Among patients with an initially confirmed or strong suspicion of AMI, the corresponding figures were 3.1 +/- 1.8 AU for metoprolol and 2.2 +/- 1.6 AU for placebo P =.02). Among patients with only a vague or moderate suspicion of AMI, there was no difference. The treatment was well tolerated. CONCLUSIONS: When all patients were included in the analyses, there was no significant difference with regard to reduction of chest pain in the patients randomly assigned to metoprolol compared with placebo. A retrospective subgroup analysis indicated a beneficial effect of metoprolol among patients with an initially strong suspicion of or confirmed AMI. Further investigations are warranted to confirm this finding.

Has an intensified treatment in the ambulance of patients with acute severe left heart failure improved the outcome?2000In: European journal of emergency medicine, ISSN 0969-9546, E-ISSN 1473-5695, Vol. 7, no 1, p. 15-24Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to evaluate short- and long-term outcome prior to and after the introduction of a more intensified treatment in the ambulance of patients with acute severe heart failure. Consecutive patients with acute severe heart failure transported by the mobile coronary care unit (MCCU) in the community of Göteborg prior to and after the introduction of an intensified treatment (nitroglycerine, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and furosemide). One hundred and fifty-eight patients were evaluated during each period. The median age was 77 and 76.5 years, respectively, and 52% and 42% were women. The proportion of patients given nitroglycerine in the ambulance was 4% and 68% in the two periods; the proportion of patients treated with furosemide was 13% and 84%, respectively. CPAP was used in less than 1% during period 1 and in 91% during period 2. On admission of the ambulance 60% had fulminant pulmonary oedema during period 1 versus 78% during period 2 (p<0.0001). On admission to hospital the opposite was found, 93% during period 1 versus 76% during period 2 (p<0.0001). The median serum creatinine kinase (CK-MB) maximum activity was 13 microkat/l during period 1 and 8 microkat/l during period 2 (p = 0.007). However, the mortality during the first year remained high during both periods (39.2% and 35.8%, p = 0.64). It is concluded that a more intensive treatment in the ambulance of patients with acute severe heart failure seems to have resulted in an improvement in symptoms during transport and less myocardial damage. However, no significant improvement in long-term mortality was observed.

Nyanlända elever i matematikklassrummet: lärarens perspektiv.2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Resultatet presenteras i olika teman.

Barriers to a wider Implementation of LMS in Higher Education: a Swedish case study, 2006-20112012In: E-learning and education, Vol. 9Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates barriers to a wider utilization of a Learning Management System (LMS). The study aims to identify the reasons why some tools in the LMS are rarely used, in spite of assertions that the learning experience and students’ performance can be improved by interaction and collaboration, facilitated by the LMS. Lecturers’ perceptions about the use of LMSs over the last four years at the School of Engineering, University of Borås were investigated. Seventeen lecturers who were interviewed in 2006 were interviewed again in 2011. The lecturers’ still use the LMS primarily for distribution of documents and course administration. The results indicate that their attitudes have not changed significantly. The apparent reluctance to utilize interactive features in the LMS is analyzed, by looking at the expected impact on the lecturers’ work situation. The author argues that the main barrier to a wider utilization of LMS is the lecturers’ fear of additional demands on their time. Hence, if educational institutions want a wider utilization of LMS, some kind of incentives for lecturers are needed, in addition to support and training.

Educational Software in Engineering Education2015Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis contributes to the quality of engineering education and the accessibility of education worldwide by promoting computer-enhanced teaching and learning. It uses the epistemology of John Dewey (1859-1952) and the action research methodology first advanced by Kurt Lewin (1890-1947). A mixed methods approach that combines qualitative case studies with quantitative research methods is used.

In the first of three case studies engineering students working on their final degree projects participated. To elicit interaction, a learning management system (LMS) was used and the students were strongly encouraged to discuss various aspects of their work.

The second case focused on the barriers to a wider utilization of educational software in engineering education. The case is delimited to lecturers at the School of Engineering at the University of Borås. The investigation focuses on the lecturers’ reluctance to use educational technology and the slow uptake of new pedagogical methods in engineering education.

The third case study covers three subsets of participants. A course intended to improve lecturers handling skills and motivation to utilize educational software in a pedagogically sound manner was given in Cuba, Guatemala and Peru.

The first case demonstrated that computer-enhanced collaborative learning can improve the learning experience and performance of engineering students. The second case showed that LMS tools that facilitate traditional methods are used routinely, whereas lecturers often refrain from using features intended to facilitate collaboration and the creation of communities of learners.

The third case study investigated the use of a complete course package, with all course material and software contained on the same USB drive (LiveUSB Mediated Education, LUME). It is asserted that LUME can facilitate constructivist pedagogical methods and help overcome the reluctance of lecturers to utilize educational software in a pedagogical sound way.

Projektet "Loftet": ett rum för aktiv lärande2016Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

New technology creates many new teaching and learning possibilities but at the same time places great demands on teachers and learners (Scott, 2001). In March 2002 the Swedish government created the Net University to stimulate and mediate net based learning in higher education. SEK600 million was set aside to be distributed between universities who supported e-learning initiatives. Of the total amount SEK500 million was given directly to universities who offered e-learning courses via the Swedish Net University. Some of this material was packaged in a pedagogically sound way and reflected well on teachers educational designers who cared about and understood the special requirements of e-learners. Unfortunately other material consisted of course notes and lectures that were simply downloaded with a great deal of thought for the learner. More recently the Net University has seen the need for more interactive courses that make use of commercial learning management systems (hereafter LMS). LMS such as BlackBoard, WebCT, Fronter, Ping Pong and others provide a way for teachers and learners to arrange course materials in a clear and helpful way as well as providing useful interactive teaching and learning tools. In early 2006 it hopes to be able to recommend that participating universities use one particular LMS in order to gain the greatest pedagogical and economical benefit for the universities and their teachers and learners. The recommendation follows an exhaustive evaluation process.

Equity and access issues in the educational use of learning management systems (LMS) in a globally networked society2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper the authors present research findings from a comparative case study involving the pedagogical use of learning management systems (LMS) at the university level. Two engineering programs are compared, one based at the University College, Borås, Sweden (hereafter UB) and the other at the Instituto Superior Politéêcnico Joséê Antonio Echeverrîa, Havana, Cuba (hereafter ISPJAE). At UB twenty two engineering lecturers were surveyed concerning their use of LMS. At ISPJAE fifteen lecturers were given a course on LMS, provided with tools to use it, and subsequently interviewed about the extent to which they had employed it in their courses. The aim of the case study was threefold. Firstly to compare the lecturers' knowledge and understanding of the pedagogical advantages of using LMS in face-to-face, blended and online learning. Secondly to determine the extent to which an LMS was used and evaluate the pedagogical value of such use. Thirdly to investigate the administrative, technological and pedagogical barriers involved in using an LMS.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper the authors present a solution to the problem of giving practical training in handling information and communication technology (ICT) without depending on internet access. The proposed method is to use an USB-memory to emulate selected educational resources that are otherwise available on the internet or on a local network. How this method can influence pedagogical issues is discussed and, it is asserted that the method offers interesting learning advantages beyond the obvious independence of internet connections. The paper describes the planning and implementation of a course about the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) in higher education and, in particular, how it was designed to meet the needs of educators in a developing country with slow or unreliable internet connections. The course was a part of the project USo+I: Universidad, Sociedad e Innovación. Mejora de la pertinencia de la educación en las ingenierías de Latinoamérica (University and Society: Improving of the relevance of the education in the engineering of Latinoamerica) this project financed by the European Union, within the ALFA III program. The University of Borås was assigned to design and teach a course about LMS to engineering educators in Latin-America.

A digital tool for improving enrolment and completion rate of Masters' Studies2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a project, funded by Erasmus +, Strategic Partnership and conducted in by three European universities from; Sweden, Spain and the UK, in cooperation with a software company. The project aims to remediate the problem of masters' students who do not get their degree within the allocated time or even drop out from universities. The underlying cause is identified as students that have the formal prerequisites to register for a master's programme may still lack crucial previous knowledge and/or abilities to manage the studies.

The suggested solution was to develop learning resource modules for four different master's programmes in Europe and create a HTML5-platform to house them. The modules are intended to illustrate the different abilities and level of previous knowledge that applicants are supposed to bring into their studies by a suitable entry profile for the master's course identified by lecturers.

The access modules provides potential students with a self-assessment test divided in twelve parts. A visualization of the level of the twelve different skills or field of knowledge are then compared to the suitable entry profile for the master's course. Whenever weak spots in the prospective students´ ability are identified, the students are presented with a series of learning interventions designed to remedy flaws in their ability.

The authors argue that the use of similar access modules could improve enrolment, completion rate, time-to-degree and retention in a wide range of educations.

ATTITUDES AND UTILIZATION OF OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES2015In: 8TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND INNOVATION, SEVILLE, SPAIN, NOVEMBER 16-18, 2015, Seville, 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The use of Open Educational Resources (OER) by a number of Latin American lecturers and their students is presented. The respondents were divided in four groups, one each in Cuba, Guatemala, Peru and Brazil. They all participated in a course given by the first author of this paper about the use of learning management systems in the year 2010-12. In that course only OER were used and the participants were strongly encouraged to utilize OER in their work. Two weeks into the course the participants responded to a questionnaire with a number of statements about the use and sharing of free material on the internet.

In this study the lecturers´ opinions about the use of OER at that time are compared with the use of OER by the lecturers and their students about one year after the course was finished.

In all four groups the answers to the first questionnaire showed that, even though the idea to utilize free course material in higher education was new to most of them, the lecturers were positive to the idea of utilizing OER and most of them were prepared to make material of their own available to others.

The results from the first and the second occasion are strongly correlated; the conclusion is that the attitude of the lecturers is of critical importance for the acceptance of OER. The results are consistent with the assumption that many lecturers can find plenty of useful free course material once they are made aware of OER and have methods to disseminate it to their students.

The authors adhere to the opinion that OER could increase the quality of education and contribute to the availability of education worldwide. In order to stimulate the production and dissemination of OER the authors recommend that institutions of education worldwide encourage lecturers to take part in the free sharing of material on the internet.

How university teachers in developing countries perceive the use of open educational resources in higher education2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study was conducted to find out how lecturers in developing countries perceive the use of Open Educational Resources (OER). A group of teachers at the Instituto superior Politécnico José Antonio Echeverría, Facultad de Ingeniería Eléctrica (Havana, Cuba) participated in a course about the use of Learning Management Systems that only used OER. After they had been introduced to the concept they answered a questionnaire with a number of statements about the use and sharing of free material on the internet. The answers show that the lecturers were positive to the use of free course material and expressed their willingness to make their own material available. The results also confirm the hypothesis that peer recognition is an important reward for the time and effort spent on producing freeware. The authors assert that extensive use of OER could increase the quality of education, as well as making education more accessible in developing countries. To stimulate the production and dissemination of OER it is recommended that institutions of education worldwide promote the use of OER and encourage lecturers to take part in the free sharing of material on the internet.

Lecturers' attitudes about the use of learning management systems in engineering education: A Swedish case study2007In: Australasian Journal of Educational Technology, ISSN 1449-3098, E-ISSN 1449-5554, Vol. 23, no 3, p. 327-349Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine lecturers' attitudes towards learning management systems (LMS), with particular reference to identifying obstacles to increased use. At the University College of Borås, Sweden, 22 lecturers who had used WebCT during the previous 9 months were interviewed. The answers show that most of the lecturers, including those who only used minor parts of the LMS, believed that they could benefit from using a LMS in the future. The study did not support the hypothesis that fear of the complexity of the system or unwanted effects on education are important reasons for lecturers not to use the LMS. When lecturers decide individually to use tools in the LMS, the major concern is the initial amount of work compared with the expected benefits. Due to the benefits of a fully implemented LMS and the results of this study, it is recommended that institutions in higher education take actions to establish LMS as a standard tool, and support development of the lecturers' professional competence.

    Abstract [en]

This article presents findings from an action research project. It is based on data from participants in a Learning Management Systems (LMS) course given to educators in Cuba, Guatemala, Peru and Brazil. The data were first collected from the participants during the course, and approximately one year later, the participants were asked to fill out another questionnaire outlining their experiences after the course. The course used Live USB-Mediated Education (LUME), a method based on a complete package of course material and programs executable from portable memory devices, thus allowing participants to work on any computer on their own time. The results show that positive attitudes about open educational resources (OER), educational software and collaborative methods go together and are likely to result in a wider use of computer-facilitated methods and free digital material. The authors assert that the lecturers’ pedagogical motivation rather than their technical skill determine whether and to what extent they will use educational software; additionally, the results indicate that to reap the pedagogical benefits of educational software, teachers must understand how information sharing and collaborative methods can improve learning and teaching.

    Abstract [en]

In this article the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) at the School of Engineering, University of Borås, in the year 2004 and the academic year 2009-2010 is investigated. The tools in the LMS were classified into four groups (tools for distribution, tools for communication, tools for interaction and tools for course administration) and the pattern of use was analyzed. The preliminary interpretation of the results was discussed with a group of teachers from the School of Engineering with long experience of using LMS. High expectations about LMS as a tool to facilitate flexible education, student centered methods and the creation of an effective learning environment is abundant in the literature. This study, however, shows that in most of the surveyed courses the available LMS is predominantly used to distribute documents to students. The authors argue that a more elaborate use of LMS and a transformation of pedagogical practices towards social constructivist, learner centered procedures should be treated as an integrated process of professional development.

Preparing for Masters´ Studies: A Web Based Tool For Self-Assessment and Knowledge Gap Mitigation2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a project, conducted by three European universities and a software company, funded by Erasmus +, Strategic Partnership. The project addresses the problem that sometime masters´ students do not get their degree within the allocated time, if at all. Apparently some students with the formal prerequisites to register for a master's programme still lacked the actual abilities to manage their studies.

The solution was to design an online HTML5 platform to house self-assessment and learning resource modules for four different master's programmes in Europe. The modules were intended to illustrate the level and abilities that potential applicants were supposed to bring into their studies by a self-assessment test. In case lacking abilities were revealed, the modules offer learning resources to mitigate those gaps.

The access modules provides potential students with a visualization of twelve different skills and knowledge as compared to those identified by lecturers as necessary for study on the master's course. If there are weak spots identified, the students are presented with a series of learning interventions designed to remedy their ability flaws.

The authors suggest that providing potential students with this kind of material can raise their awareness of what the programme really takes. In this way students with false expectations can be avoided and the ones who applies come better prepared, which the use of access modules potentially can leads to improved enrolment, completion rate, time-to-degree and retention in a wide range of academic programmes.

In this paper the authors report on a course that was given in Cuba in 2010. The funding for the course came from the European Union, within the ALFA III program. The project was called US0+I; Universidad, Sociedad e Innovación and its aim was to facilitate the exchange of educational methodology and pedagogy between the partner countries that made up the US0+I consortium. Within this project the University of Borås was assigned the task of giving the above mentioned course about the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) in Higher Education. This paper describes the design and implementation of the course, with emphasis on how it was adapted to meet the needs of lecturers in a developing country. It also analyzes the results of research data that was collected during the duration of the course. The main aim of the research was to more clearly define key questions and issues in the area of cross cultural use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) as part of a larger action research project concerning ICT and cross cultural equity. The basic question that drives this research project is: What technical, social, economic and cultural differences affect the implementation of LMS in developed as compared to developing countries?

LUME is an acronym for LiveUSB Mediated Education, a method based on a complete course package executable from a portable memory device.

The process of planning appropriate changes in a course is outlined by reflecting on previous results. Some critical aspects of teachers’ education are identified and the authors argue that pedagogical motivation and collaboration rather than technical skill decide the long-term results.

The authors assert that educational software have the biggest impact on the students when it is used to facilitate social constructivist methods. In order to reap the pedagogical benefits of educational software teachers must understand how sharing the information and the collaborative learning can improve learning and teaching in high education.

Attitudes amongst lecturers in engineering education: the use of learning management systems in developing countries2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this investigation a group of lecturers in engineering education in Cuba that took part in an introduction course about the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) gave their opinions about the future use of LMS. The answers show that the lecturers, even though they had little experience in handling a LMS, believed that they could benefit from the use of a LMS in the future and that they are prepared to use the programs as soon as they get proper training and the access to computers and internet is sufficient. It is pointed out that the possibility to improve efficiency, quality and availability of education by the use of a LMS depends on the system being fully implemented. In view of these findings the authors recommend that universities in developing countries take immediate steps to give lecturers training in the handling of LMS and encourage them to prepare for an extensive use of LMS as soon as the access to computers is sufficient.

Classification of the features in learning management systems2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A Learning Management System (LMS) can be analyzed by sorting the features into four groups; tools for distribution, tools for communication, tools for interaction and tools for course administration. This classification was used for the first time when the use of LMS at the School of Engineering, University of Borås, in the year 2004 and the academic year 2009-2010 was investigated. The results from this longitudinal investigation confirmed the suspicion that lecturers used the available LMS predominantly to distribute documents to students, and that the pattern of use did not change over time. In this article the authors asserts that this classification is necessary to convincingly demonstrate the pattern of use and to analyze the pedagogical application of an LMS. The classification system works regardless of what brand of LMS is used, and it allows the connection between educational procedures and features in the LMS to be analyzed. Today, platforms, similar to a LMS are used in industry and government to handle information, staff development and internal communication. The possibility to analyze the use of such platforms may have beneficial effects on society beyond and outside universities.

Adaptation, design and implementation of engineering education to limited internet access2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract – This paper is a description of the design and implementation of a course within the project USo+I: Universidad, Sociedad e Innovación financed by the European Union, within the ALFA III program. The course was an introduction to the handling of Learning Management Systems (LMS) first conducted at Instituto Superior Politécnico José Antonio Echeverría, Facultad de Ingeniería Eléctrica, Havana, Cuba. The course was divided as two weeks of on-campus lectures and workshops followed by distance learning for three months, altogether corresponding to ten weeks of full time studies. Pedagogically and methodically the course was planned within the concept of Problem Based Learning (PBL). All course material was open educational resources freely available on the internet. The design of the course also had to consider the problems of limited access to computers and internet, both during the course and in the lecturers´ future practice. The solution was to have the LMS “Moodle” and other software executable from USB-memories and all course material available from the same USB-memory sticks. How this design can meet the given considerations is discussed.

När stormen kommer: en studie om Almedalsveckans krishantering 20172019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is written in Swedish and the following text is a summary with appropriate keywords. In the spring of 2017 the democratic week, Almedalen Week, found themselves facing a crisis. A lot was written in the media about the week regarding the elevated tariffs of the event ground, the prime minister who would not participate and that the Nordic Resistance Movement (NMR) who for the first time attended with their own event ground. These occurrences were something that Almedalen Week had to address and manage. During the spring months, Almedalen week faced what one would call a storm of criticism and it was then up to the management of the week to handle the occurrences in the best way possible for continued good reputation. Crisis management is important for an organisation to minimize their damages and to protect their own brand. Therefore the purpose of this study is to contribute knowledge to Almedalen Weeks management and other organizations within the public sector. We have chosen to focus on two research questions in order to contribute to further knowledge in the studied field. These questions are: Which strategies did Almedalen Week use to handle the crisis during 2017, and, how did Almedalen Week crisis management affect their crisis communication? In order to answer our research questions we chose to utilize a qualitative survey with semistructured interviews with individuals from Almedalens management. These individuals were involved during the crisis of 2017 and have first hand experience. The answers gathered from the interviews builds our studies empiricism. Based on this study we can state that Almedalen 2017 was not prepared for this crisis because they had not developed any preparatory actions. An important conclusion based on Almedalens crisis management 2017 is that other organizations within the public sector should take inconsideration that crisis management is unique and that management is depended on the crisis characteristics.

Supply Chain Security Programs Comparing TAPA FSR with ISPS2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this era, where international outsourcing and global distribution systems are thriving, providing the security of products in the logistic system is very crucial now. For corporates, it is highly vital to know how secure high-tech products and materials are handled, warehoused and transported as they move throughout the globe. Different international security standards have been introduced, two of which are TAPA FSR and ISPS. TAPA FSR (Freight Security Requirements) defines the smallest required security standards for goods travelling throughout the supply chain and the suitable approaches in keeping those standards. ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) is another security standard which identifies the tasks of governments, shipping companies, shipboard personnel, and port/facility personnel to find security threats and take preemptive actions against security events influencing ships or port facilities used in global business. This research attempts to study the literature on security of transportation in supply chain. By comparing the requirements of TAPA FSR and ISPS, we aim to find their basic differences and to analyze to what extent the two standards respond to the crucial concepts of security in the supply chain.

    Abstract [en]

Sustainable entrepreneurship involves three different dimensions in sustainable development: social dimensions, ecological dimensions and economic dimensions. In order to work towards sustainable entrepreneurship the firm needs to balance these three areas of responsibility simultaneously. This study examines the social, economic and ecological dimensions of sustainable enterprise, based on sustainable entrepreneurship. The study analyses how the three sustainability dimensions integrates with each other in order to gain a better understanding of how to better adapt their business to sustainable entrepreneurship.   In order to obtain a comprehensive base a literature study was first conducted. The literature reviews consists of dissertations and literature studies. The study is also based on qualitative interviews with a semi-structured design. The purpose of the interviews was to get a better understanding of the present social commitment within the firm. Both a direct interview and a telephone interview were conducted.   Social aspects and conditions at the company were examined in the study through a semi-structured interview. In the economic aspects, heavy truck, fuel, emissions and costs for sustainable entrepreneurship were weighted. The ecological dimension is investigated through using the Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) as a tool. When using a LCA a company can get a greater understanding of how their activities affect the environment and where the effect has the most impact.    In the economic dimension, it was clear that none of the investments were relatively large in comparison to the company's earnings. Changing the fuel to HVO is clearly the best option taken from a perspective for sustainable entrepreneurship. The social dimensions were examined in terms of active choices, ethics, morals and attitude. It was very clear that great responsibility lies with the mother-company in Norway where all production takes place. The company lacked knowledge in how to affect the social dimensions and what they included. The social dimensions consist of many soft parts, a more democratic and open process is needed to create a successful result.   Working actively with sustainable entrepreneurship is demanding resources for the entire organization and its processes, as well as continuous updating and control. Since profitability in numbers can be difficult to read in a short-term perspective many companies choose to put resources on other things.    Advantages for organizations that work with sustainable entrepreneurship are that it generates both economic profitability and competence development in a long-term perspective. But most importantly, future generations must be given the conditions to live on and off our planet just as we did.

Myocardial infarction pain: systematic description and analysis1991In: Intensive Care Nursing, ISSN 0266-612X, Vol. 7, no 1, p. 3-10Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to describe various components of pain in suspected acute myocardial infarction (MI). Ninety-four patients admitted to a Coronary Care Unit (CCU) complaining of chest pain with the preliminary diagnosis suspect MI were included in the study. Thirty-eight subjects were eventually diagnosed as having MI and 56 subjects as non-MI. A comparison of chest pain description was performed between MI and non-MI subjects. The Pain-o-meter (POM) and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were used to assess pain intensity. MI patients reported more intense sensory and affective pain than non-MI patients. MI patients also reported more intense affective pain than sensory pain, whereas non-MI patients reported just the opposite. The number of affective words chosen by MI patients differentiated them more clearly from non-MI patients than any other factor in the pain description. Pain intensity was significantly correlated to the estimated size of the infarct.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to gain insight into the attitudes of children´s librarian towards the position of the printed Children’s book in today’s media landscape. The reason for our interest is our belief that librarian’s attitudes to new media and their work practice have an effect on how children perceive books and reading. The study is built on qualitative interviews among four children’s librarians. Our theoretical framework stems from a variety of researchers within the fields of pedagogy and media studies such as David Buckingham, Sonia Livingstone, Neil Postman, Ylva Ellneby and Margaret Mackey. We use their theories to analyse and interpret results from the interviews. This study reveals a considerable consensus that the printed children’s book is considered to be of importance as a means for learning to read and to develop the imagination. The most important conclusion that can be drawn from the study is that new media is a stronger competitor to the printed book particularly in socio-economic poorer areas, and because of this, it is of greater importance for librarians to be aware of children’s media worlds in these areas.

“The sound of silence”: Intensivvårdsjuksköterskors erfarenheter och tillämpning av strukturerade vilostunder på en intensivvårdsavdelning2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
