Skugga en kollega. Hållbara former för kompetensutveckling2011Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In 2011 it became statutory in Sweden that all pupils should have access to a school library. However, the law does not state what the school library should look like or what function it should have, which means that the law is open to interpretation by school authority. This means that the libraries’ are different in different schools and that the pupils get unequal access to the school library, which in turn can affect the school’s work towards becoming an equal school. The aim of this essay was to examine how different elementary school libraries in one municipality look like regarding the school library’s pedagogical role and conditions, and to examine what the school library’s role means for the work towards becoming an equal school. The study was performed using a qualitative method, in the form of semi-structured interviews that was analyzed using Loertscher’s taxonomy for school libraries. The result showed that the school libraries’ pedagogical roles were different in all the schools and that the school librarians had different possibilities to perform their work.

Price revisited: on the growth of dissertations in eight research fields2011Ingår i: Scientometrics, ISSN 0138-9130, E-ISSN 1588-2861, Vol. 88, nr 2, s. 371-383Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper studies the production of dissertations in eight research fields in thenatural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities. In using doctoral dissertations itbuilds on De Solla Prices seminal study which used PhD dissertations as one of severalindicators of scientific growth (Price, Little science, big science, 1963). Data from theProQuest: Dissertations and Theses database covering the years 1950–2007 are used todepict historical trends, and the Gompertz function was used for analysing the data. Adecline in the growth of dissertations can be seen in all fields in the mid-eighties andseveral fields show only a modest growth during the entire period. The growth profiles ofspecific disciplines could not be explained by traditional dichotomies such as pure/appliedor soft/hard, but rather it seems that the age of the discipline appears to be an importantfactor. Thus, it is obvious that the growth of dissertations must be explained using severalfactors emerging both inside and outside academia. Consequently, we propose that theoutput of dissertations can be used as an indicator of growth, especially in fields like thehumanities, where journal or article counts are less applicable.

Storying Research: Conducting Research in New Formats and New Voices2014Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The session engages with an acute tension evident in scholarly communication: We are witnessing a great deal of innovation and experimentation in relation to the way research is performed and shared. The push towards, and need for, innovation and creativity in academic research is being emphasized to an ever increasing extent. A rich set of digital tools and transdisciplinary engagements have opened the door for research conducted and reported in increasingly hybridised, dynamic and interactive ways. At the same time, academic research is increasingly being evaluated by focusing on quantitative analyses based on publications; analyses which privilege established scholarly practices and publication venues. In the session, we are interested in exploring collectively on the one hand, the voice in and position from which we report on research and - indeed - conduct research. On the other hand, how do we use documents and artefacts to tell our stories? Digital media provide new affordances through a broader selection of modes of representation to present data, results and argumentation. The session is conducted as a 'conversation café', where each café table focuses on one aspect of these opportunities.

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this study was to examine how a selection of 1993 year's first books

had been spread to a selection of public libraries in 161 municipals. The state 's cultural policy

recommends that it is the public libraries' duty to lead the way to new, unknown authors.

We wanted to find out if this was fulfilled. The spreading of the books was scrutinized from a

number of variables, e.g. gender of the authors, reviews and size of the municipals. Furthermore,

28 public libraries answered an inquiry regarding their acquisition policy concerning

first books. The conclusion was that the libraries did not fulfil the state's cultural policy

satisfyingly. and this applied particularly to the smaller municipals. 70 % of the public libraries

that answered the inquiry confirmed that they have a responsibility for making these books

accessible to borrowers. One of the reasons why the libraries did not fulfil the policy was

economic. In this situation the libraries often choose those books which are most requested by

    the borrowers.

    Abstract [en]

This study investigated upper secondary school students’ views on their school libraries and whether their libraries helped with their studies. The study’s main focus was information literacy and reading, but the function of the library’s physical environment was also investigated. Participating school libraries were known to be well-developed and to be well integrated in the planning, executing and evaluating of lessons and school projects. Two online questionnaires were distributed at six different schools: one for students and one for the school librarians. 222 students chose to participate. With primarily a sociocultural perspective, the study found that students to a great extent valued both the calm study environment that the library provides and the school librarians’ knowledge and helpfulness. The students’ responses indicated that they felt helped on aspects related to information literacy to a greater extent than aspects related to reading. The students also felt that their libraries provided more help with finding texts that they enjoy reading than with reading strategies. The study found no clear correlation between library usage and reading confidence, which indicates that not only “readers” use the school libraries. Vocational students responded less frequently and more negatively than non-vocational students, and school librarians described it as more challenging both to reach out to vocational students and to find opportunities to work with vocational teachers. Equivalence between classes seemed to concern several school librarians in this study.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this Master’s thesis is to develop new knowledge of how librarians view the public library as a place for integration of immigrant children and young people. Five librarians, from five different libraries were interviewed. The results were analysed through the theoretical framework ”The four spaces” developed by Jochumsen, Hvenegaard Rasmussen and Skot-Hansen (2012). The result of the study shows that librarians believe that public libraries in many ways can enable integration for newly arrived children and young people. The main difficulties for the libraries is to reach out and promote themselves to the target group. Public libraries can enable integration by serving as a meeting place and a safe place where newly arrived children and young people can come and meet other people and library staff. By offering different types of group activities, integration can be achieved as well as working relationship creation. According to the librarians, public libraries can contribute to integration by offering its users different types of language development activities. Promoting reading is one of the most important missions libraries have towards the target group. The ambition of libraries is, for example, to offer reading sessions in the children’s mother tongue and programs in easy Swedish language. Libraries can assist the newly arrived children and young people with literature and other media in different languages. Making this available is important to contribute to integration.

Små skärmar, stor betydelse?: En studie i hur svenska SEO-företag arbetar med sökmotoroptimering i en mobil kontext2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In the summer of 2015, Google revealed that the number of searches conducted through mobile phones, for the first time had exceeded the number of searches conducted via computers. Last year (2018) Google announced that they had begun to both index and rank websites according to the principle of mobile-first. This means that Google now considers the mobile phone, rather than the computer, as the primary device. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine what consequences this paradigm shift has for the process of search engine optimizing a website  through the lens of, in this case Swedish, SEO companies. A qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews was applied with the purpose of gathering insights from the SEO companies on the subject. The findings of this study identify mobile-friendliness as a vital part of the SEO-process, in order to achieve high ranking in search results. Further findings also suggests that core principles of SEO are more likely to clash with core principles of UX-design in a mobile-first context, than when desktop reigned supreme.

    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of this study is to create development proposals for further development of the web-based learning tool Web Based Simulation of Patients (Web-SP). The tool is used in health care programs where students with digital help can link theoretical knowledge and practical actions to reach as close as possible to a true patient case. This study investigates whether the tool can be developed to apply to students in emergency and ambulance care. Hence, the study focus prehospital context and also solutions for a smoother use of the tool in line with user experience goals. Through contextual inquiry, interviews and focus group interviews, the development proposals have been reformed iteratively to better respond to new goals. The empirical results shows that parallel work is central to a prehospital patient case and how information architecture, navigation and structure should be reworked to better suit these conditions.

    Abstract [en]

Homebrewing of beer is a worldwide growing hobby, and using Stebbins’ theories on leisure, brewing can be classified as a serious leisure. Using a qualitative approach, the aim of this explorative bachelor’s thesis is to gain a deeper understanding of a group of serious leisure homebrewers through the use of semi-structured interviews. The research questions are: Which information resources are used by home brewers? Which information activities do homebrewers perform? To what extent do homebrewers share information with other home brewers? The transcribed interviews were analysed using Lloyd’s concept on information landscapes, Talja and Hansen’s concept on information behaviour and previous studies on the information behavior of hobbyists. The homebrewers use a variety of text-based, social and physical information resources for their hobby. Beer is the most important information resource, as interaction with different categories of beer create the brewers own taste. Taste act as a catalyst for consequent information activities. The brewers own experiences of brewing is also a valued resource since it creates know-how about the processes involved. The main information activities associated with brewing revolve around the making of recipes: brewers search for recipes that they compare, alter or combine to suit their own preferences. Information sharing is prevalent among the brewers in the study as it is expected by the homebrewing community at large. Sharing is seen as a method of transferring information from brewer to brewer in their quest for the ultimate brew.

Developing a theory of open access: a grounded theory based literature review2016Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The thesis presents a conceptual literature review of the subject of open access as it is reflected in literature relevant to digital library research. An approach to the grounded theory method specifically created for the purpose of performing a literature review is applied to 70 articles and conference proceedings found in the databases LISA and LISTA. Through the coding of the literature five categories that conceptually order the subject of open access emerged; Open Access, Authors, Scholarly Communication, Libraries and Librarians, and Developing and Transitional Countries. The conceptual relations of the categories are discussed in the presentation of the categories. The emerged theory is then validated through a review of earlier literature, which focused on literature reviews on open access. A model of the emerged theory with explanatory narratives are then presented in the concluding chapter.

    Abstract [en]

This is a paper that discusses the different information activities made on the Twitter webbsite by Stockholm city library. What type of information does the library focus on publishing and retweeting on Twitter? How is the tone of voice and the content in the dialogues between the library and their followers on the Twitter webbsite? The @ssbnu is examined by using a qualitative content analysis to categorise different information activites and find out wich information is given priority to. The paper aims to deepen the understanding for how the public library describes itself through the publications made on the Twitter webbsite in order to aid public libraries in developing their activities on social media. The paper show that by having an editor at the library actively working with Twitter there is a more wivid communication between followers and more often communication in the form of dialogue between the followers and the library. The content of the tweets and retweets are still traditional, focusing on reading fiction, the librarys own events and the library as a physical buildning.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to gain knowledge about how personnel at public libraries describes how they work with visual communication. That is, working with signs, posters, maps, digital information on monitors and so on, so that the users easily will find their way around the library and get aware of the libraries various services and upcoming events. To be able to communicate with the users is important for all institutions and there might be challenges involved in that. Research shows that visual communication must be evident so that the users understand it. It is also important that the visual communication is not to vague or to rich. Wayfinding is a problem solving process in three parts which includes: search, decide and move, with the objective to get from point A to point B. The Danish professor Per Mollerups nine strategies for wayfinding is used as a tool to analyze the empiric material. The strategies include track following, route following, educated seeking, inference, screening, aiming, map-reading, compassing and social navigation. This study is based on five qualitative semi-structured interviews with personnel from five different public libraries. The results shows that the informants believe that visual communication is an important part of the profession, but that they neither have the time nor the right knowledge to make a thorough job.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to examine how students at Linköpings universitet use the discovery tool Unisearch by answering the following research questions: How do the students use Unisearch to find information? What types of problems do they encounter and what assistance does Unisearch provide? What are the students' opinions about Unisearch?

We presented five students with five common library research tasks that students typically encounter. By using a combination of observations and follow up interviews we obtained empirical data, which we then analyzed using the model “The Five Dimensions of Usability” by Whitney Quesenbery.

Our findings show that the students considered Unisearch to be an adequate search tool. They found Unisearch relatively easy and efficient to use. The main problem the students encountered concerned the terminology used in Unisearch, especially when it comes to limiters. Another problem encountered was that students sometimes failed to notice when limiters were retained for new searches or lost during a search. The students also stated that there is a lack of resources that provide help or guidance concerning the use of Unisearch.

The aim of this master thesis is to examine how much parents interfere with their children's choice of literature and if they have an inf1uence on what their children read. lt also includes the children's point of view as weil as the librarian's.

Twenty-one children answered a questionnaire, fourteen parents and one librarian were interviewed. An attempt was made to divide their answers into several sections and to compare the results with extensive source material.

The result shows that the parents in our study, from a general point of view, are interested in what their children read, but they do not influence them into certain types of literature by purpose.

    Abstract [en]

Librarians with a teaching role in higher education need to collaborate with the faculty. The aim of this thesis is to identify the importance of a well communicative collaboration and what difference it makes to the students. Information literacy is a central concept for librarian’s teaching, but it may not be well known by students. The collection of empirical material took place in Southern Sweden. Five librarians with a teaching role were interviewed at their workplace and it was four different universities. The semi-structured interviews were recorded and transcribed. The transcribed material was analyzed with Yrjö Engeströms cultural-historical activity theory to explore the terms of the teaching librarian’s success. The literature view was divided in three themes in order to understand the development and context of the teaching librarian. The meaning of the concept information literacy has not always been the same and is one of the themes in the literature review. Information literacy is the foundation of the supporting role of the librarian. Findings of the interviews shows that the collaboration is significant for student’s development of information literacy. Students need help from librarians with different kinds of matter. Librarians helpfulness is useful for senior student’s thesis writing. The teaching librarian´s objective is to support the students and researchers on the university. Knowledge and resources is a part of the tools librarians need to succeed. The collaboration between librarians and teacher is the key element to invite the students to the library and librarian’s knowledge.

Vart tog slukarbarnen vägen?: 9-12-åringars biblioteks-, läs- och fritidsvanor i en mindre västsvensk kommun1997Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 80 poäng / 120 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the fictional reading habits and the spare time interests among a group of 9-12-year-olds.

Based on the results from questionnaires, interviews and by compiling summaries of literature relevant to this study, I wanted to compare earlier research with my own results and also reflect on notions made by librarians and teachers concerning the children's reading and use of the library.

The study shows great differences on most domains between gender. All children regularly visit the library with their teachers. These visits seem to satisfy most boys' need of fiction. During spare time they rather sport, play computer games or watch video films. But if the girls are not sporting or associating with friends they gladly read books during spare time, especially the kind of books the library doesn't stock, i.e. long-run serial books. According to this study book devouring children can be found among 15,7% of the respondents.

Both librarians and teachers aspired to more collaboration in form of "book talks'· and book circles in hopes of visualizing the alternative books offered by the library and making the children want to go there during their spare time.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor study aims to investigate in what extent, and how, the biggest e-commerces in Sweden applies CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) related content in the information architecture on their websites. Based on previous research and conventions, a thorough reviewing protocol has been created and used to gather data. The study examines factors such as different sorts of components and their placing, what sort of content (text, image, video) is mediated as well as in which circumstances the CSR related content occurs (at the startpage, via product pages, the ordering procedure, etc.). The study then analyses the gathered data by converting many of the answers to binary variables, while the remaining data is processed with the help of some mathematical formulas and a smaller content analysis. Findings show that many of Sweden’s biggest e-commerces still have a long way to go if they want to more thoroughly inform their customers about their work with CSR. Still, certifications such as ”Trygg e-handel” (safe e-shopping) and subpages dedicated to CSR is not unusual. It is suggested that future research should be applied to many different aspects related to the studied subject area, to broaden the general lack of knowledge surrounding the phenomena of interest.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to seek knowledge about how children and their parents use the children’s section in a newly built library, and what function it has for its users. We also want to seek knowledge about how the children’s section is seen as a meeting place by the parents. Our research questions are: How is the children’s section at the public library of Lidköping being used as a meeting space, performative space, inspiration space and learning space? What are the functions of the children's section at the public library of Lidköping for families with children? Do the parents see the children’s section as a meeting place, then in which way?The theoretical approach is based on The Four Space Model by Henrik Jochumsen, Casper Hvenegaard Rasmussen and Dorte Skot-Hansen. We used qualitative interviews and non-participant observations to answer our questions. The results show that the library is mostly being used for reading, playing and to consort within the family. The children’s section functions as an entrance to books and reading, and it also has a function as a place where you spend time with your family. We discovered that half of the parents in our study did see the children’s section as a meeting place because they thought it is a good place to meet and consort.

    Abstract [en]

In this diploma work we present the results from a study of how adult immigrants utilise the services provided by the public library in Biskopsgården, Gothenburg. A survey encompassing 51 library visitors of foreign origin and an interview with two librarians at the library were performed.

The results from the survey show that the majority of the informants were male students inages from 26 to 45 years and that they had been living in Sweden for a maximum of five years. 73% of the informants used the library to borrow literature in Swedish, 53% to read newspapers and periodicals in their native language, 43% to borrow literature in their native language and 43% to read newspapers and periodicals in Swedish.

These results were compared with two other related studies with which partial correspondencewas found. In addition, related topics such as multicultural librarianship and the psychological aspects of immigration are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on the assumption that the society in which we live is changing and that we are entering into the information society. This change will affect the public libraries in various ways and the libraries will have to be prepared to make adequate changes in their organizations.

Based on the theories of Eric Rhenman and Richard Normann, dealing with how organizations act when changes in their environment occur, we have interviewed 10 public library leaders to find out how hteir respective libraries have acted in this situation.

The results show that libraries have made some changes in their organizations to meet the environmental changes. Although not changing their old mission, all libraries have computerized and have had to raise the librarians educational level. However, only small changes have beenmade in their work towards the environment. Changes of this kind may become necessary in the future.

Hur kan konstnärligt forskningsmaterial tillgängliggöras Open Access?2008Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

While the Swedish media concentration increases, it becomes important to investigate whether mass media plays an inhibitory role in a democratic perspective in the development of public libraries' holdings.

The study aims to fill a knowledge gap by creating a model that can measure whether there is any correlation between the media concentration and public libraries purchases of books.

Our research questions are:- What requirements must comply with such a model?- How does the model operate in a trial?

The theoretical framework is based on Bourdieu's theory regarding the literary field. To get answers to our questions, we used the method of quantitative content analysis. Our results show that the big publishers dominate our empirical data and that a minor part of what is published is presented in the media. In order to generalize our result a major study on the subject ought to be conducted. We believe that our model can provide a basis for further thesis.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to get a closer look at the relations between representatives from different occupational groups after collaborating in the form of a project. The project, involving professionals from the public library, the centre for culture and the pre-schools in Bollnäs focused on basic values and was clearly linked to the curriculum of the pre-school. My aim was to find out what possibilities and challenges the participants had experienced in collaborating with each other. I also wanted to find out how collaborating in this project might change the participants attitudes towards each others professional competence. I performed a case study using semi-structured inteviews to collect the empirical material. The results were analyzed using Lena Folkessons theory regarding the interaction between school librarians and teachers. The conclusions are that this particular collaboration has contributed to insights which could turn out to have value in future collaborations and that it has generated creative processes which can be further developed.

    Abstract [en]

This study is a result of a participation in the Minor Field Study program where we interviewed inhabitants in Mahé, Seychelles, about environmental awareness and information sources and/or channels. Seychelles has a distinguished environment to preserve and protect for the sake of both human and nature and public awareness plays an important part in upholding this. Our aim with this thesis is to study the inhabitants' self-assessed awareness and perceptions regarding availability of information on environmental issues in Seychelles. Furthermore we hope that a by-product of our study will be an addition to the ongoing discussion and knowledge development regarding the global environmental and climate issues. Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted and T. D. Wilson's information behaviour model from 1996 was used as theoretical framework when analysing the material. The results show a varied range of self-assessed awareness and perceptions regarding environmental issues and the availability of relevant information and information sources and/or channels.
