An intraoperative caring model: the ’awake’ patient’s need for a genuine caring encounter2013Ingår i: Clinical Nursing Studies, ISSN 2324-7940, E-ISSN 2324-7959, Vol. 1, nr 4, s. 23-35Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Anaesthesia nursing care during regional anaesthesia is characterized by the encounter between the ‘awake’ patient’s own lifeworld and the nurse anaesthetist’s knowledge in theory and in practice. This study aims to present an intraoperative caring model from the patient’s perspective that will facilitate nurse anaesthetists’ (NA) practice to enhance and support the ‘awake’ patient’s intraoperative well-being during surgery under regional anaesthesia. The model is underpinned by a synthesis based on interviews with patients, a philosophical reflection using Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy, and video recordings from orthopaedic surgeries under regional anaesthesia. The model can be used as a tool to encounter awake patients’ existential needs in the intraoperative situation and to further enlighten NAs about the possible impact of their proximity, interaction and communication behaviour in the delivery of intraoperative nursing care. The model can help NAs to access, understand and learn through lived experiences, thereby deepening their professional caring skills. The model is a way to get research knowledge ready for use by NAs to reflect on what gaps need to be filled between what nurses know (research) and do (practice).

Patient-nurse anesthetist interaction during regional anesthesia and surgery based on video recordings2013Ingår i: Journal of Perianesthesia Nursing, ISSN 1089-9472, E-ISSN 1532-8473, Vol. 28, nr 5, s. 260-270Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose The purpose of this study was to interpret and describe the patient-nurse anesthetist (NA) interaction during regional anesthesia. Design Video recordings conducted during orthopedic surgery at a surgical clinic in Sweden formed the basis for the study, in which three patients and three NAs participated. Methods A hermeneutic analysis was conducted on the data. Finding The findings of the analysis demonstrated that the NA was in either “present” presence or “absent” presence in the awake patient's visual field during surgery. The NA's professional actions at times dominated the patient's existential being in the intraoperative situation. The findings conveyed insights about the patient-NA interaction that open up possibilities for nurses to understand and reflect upon their own practice in an expanded way. Conclusions Using video recordings for reflections enables development of professional skills that positively influence the care quality for patients during regional anesthesia.

Probabilistic explorations of citation contexts: Citation roles and subject content of scientific references2022Ingår i: Proceedings of the 26th International Conference on Science and Technology Indicators / [ed] Robinson-Garcia, N; Torres-Salinas, D; Arroyo-Machado, W, 2022Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, we have started to investigate how distinguishing the role of the cited reference from the subject of the cited reference can facilitate a more nuanced way to evaluate the citation context in the referring paper. Using natural language processing methods, we have developed methods to both enrich and distinguish specific traits in the aggregated citances. In future work we intend to extend the present analysis to a larger set of publications from the corpus and to cover more disciplines to be able to evaluate the results more precisely.

Social and Existential Alienation Experienced by People with Long-term Mental Illness2005Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 19, nr 4, s. 373-380Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore how people suffering from long-term mental illness and who live in the community experience their daily lives. The study was based on an ethnographic framework involving participant observations with 23 individuals from two rehabilitation centres and interviews with six women and two men. The observational notes and interviews were recorded, transcribed into the data and analysed based on the phases of hermeneutic interpretation. The process consisted of identifying tentative interpretations that highlighted various impediments that prevent people with long-term mental illness from having an active life. The impediments can also be interpreted as a form of alienation, an interpersonal phenomenon and a consequence due to of the lack of social acceptance towards mental illness. The participants expressed concern about the future and lack of hope. Viewing themselves as being ‘odd’ is not a symptom of mental illness, but rather evidence of experiencing existential and social alienation not only as a consequence of other people's reactions but also their own negative attitudes towards mental illness and effects of their cognitive dysfunction.

Psychosocial Disadvantages in the Lives of Persons with long-term Mental illness i a Swedish Community2002Ingår i: Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, ISSN 1351-0126, E-ISSN 1365-2850, Vol. 9, nr 4, s. 457-463Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to gain in-depth knowledge of how persons with long-term mental illness experience their everyday situation, in order to identify potential psychosocial obstacles to a meaningful existence. The focus was on psychosocial aspects, such as contact with others and the quality of these contacts. An ethnographic design was used, in order to provide an inside perspective. Four persons with long-term mental illness participated in the study. Three open-ended interviews, at 1-week intervals, were conducted with each informant. Analysis of transcribed material consisted of naive reading and content analysis guided by the investigators’ understanding of the psychiatric context. Three themes were generated: feeling lonely but being unable to establish friendships; knowledge of what to do but lacking initiative; and awareness of the need for support but not wanting to be subject to control. These themes reflect contradictions between thoughts, feelings and actions, which seem to contribute to a psychosocial disadvantage in the life of persons with long-term mental illness.

    Abstract [sv]

Demand chain management and consumer insight: keys to success in retailingKonferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In retailing, high performance in logistics has been one of the most important competitive advantages for a long time. But in today’s highly competitive environment that does not seem to be enough. In this paper we argue that deeper knowledge about the why, how, and when of consumer buying behavior is a main ingredient in logistics, and the starting point in designing and developing segmented demand chains in retailing. These chains are built on partnership and trust oriented relationships. The game of power is increasingly replaced by the game of trust. This is a necessity when the competition shifts from rivalry between companies to rivalry between chains. The modern consumer of today is often well educated and the awareness of sustainability and environmental effects of too much consumption has led to a search for other kinds of added value than just another product to buy. The decline in economy also leads to a lower demand and a more selective and fastidious taste for new things. We see a clear change in the contemporary retail market. On one side, competition is increasing on almost all markets around the world. On the other side, globalization and new tools and techniques for transportation and physical movements make it possible to build new and more efficient distribution channels. And from a consumer perspective, communication technology, such as the use of smart phones and applications, have become a natural part of everyday life. These two facts could be seen both as threats and opportunities and they lead to an interesting challenge for the retail sector. A new way of looking at supply chain management is an absolute condition to success, and complementary, an holistic approach in the whole distribution chain involving the consumer and consumer insights, are the key words for winning the future battle of consumers. The purpose of the paper is to highlight the need for consumer insight and how to develop innovative concepts, in order to deliver added value to the consumer. The “old school” of distribution economy, and the concept of convenience together with information communication technology (ICT), are the basic theoretical grounds.

Value Innovation and Demand Chain Management: keys to future success in the fashion industry2012Ingår i: Nordic Textile Journal, ISSN 1404-2487, Vol. 1, s. 83-90Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Value innovation is a key in developing competitive advantage in most industries. Value innovation is both related to the physical products and accompanying value-adding services. Logistics has evolved from an order qualifier – that is a necessity – to an order winner. Increased focus on the consumer and co-creation with the consumer as a vital partner lead to alignments and rethinking of the channel structure. The supply chain evolves into a demand chain! Deeper knowledge about the why, how, and when of consumer buying behaviour is a main ingredient in demand chain thinking, and the starting point in designing and developing segmented demand chains in the fashion market. These chains are built on partnership and trust oriented relationships. The game of power is increasingly replaced by the game of trust. This is a necessity when the competition shifts from rivalry between companies to rivalry between chains. In this position paper we discuss visions of the fashion future, and how to develop innovative concepts that deliver added value to the consumer. The “old school” of distribution economy, and the concept of convenience, are the basic theoretical grounds, and we argue that innovations could be reached when investing in consumer insights and closer relationships in the demand chain.

Three-dimensional multilayer fabric structures for interactive textiles2011Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract. The integration of performances in interactive textile fabric system has so far been rather complicated since they are based on multilayer or three-dimensional principles. These structures are today mainly put together by means of several processes, which is laborious and time consuming. In this interdisciplinary study we have combined the principle of a three-dimensional multilayer weaving process and interactive textiles structures in order to enable the manufacturing of interactive textile structure in one process. The process is investigated using a manual reconstructed loom and the approach has been to use the 3D structures in order to integrate and organize conductive and compressive spacer layers as a textile capacitive structure. Measurements on such a structure was done by construction a first order passive high pass filter and using the fabric sample as the capacitor and a 1MΩ resistor. The behavior of the measurement of the capacitive sensor is quite close to the theoretical calculation and already at this stage the structure might be used to indicate the presence of a pressure. In this project we have shown that a three-dimensional structure enables the development of interactive textiles in one process. Further the concept of using a rebuilt manual loom has shown great potential in early research stages. It is considerable saving time and resources since, in this case, it is easy to reconstruct the loom design compared to performing similar reconstruction on a machine. Future research will focus on developing other types of interactive structures. Another issue will be to scale down the size of the structures in order to get thinner and more flexible qualities.

Tredimensionell vävteknik med möjliga tillämpningar inom medicinsk teknik2011Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

Facilitating User Involvement in Development of 3D Smart Textiles For Healthcare Applications2015Ingår i: Proceedings of the 6th World Conference on 3D Fabrics and their Applications, Manchester,UK/Raleigh,USA, 2015Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Smart textiles are textiles based on different types of smart materials that can sense or react on environmental stimuli. This new technology is a growing area which exhibits characteristics particularly suitable for capturing (electro) physiological signals, e.g. to monitor ECG, EEG or respiration. These textiles most often form a three dimensional structure where different materials with different characteristics are bound together in different layers. However, in order to take full advantage of these new opportunities the textile industry needs to find new methods to develop innovative smart textile products. One strong and valuable contribution is to involve users early in the development process.

The aim of this paper is to highlight how product representations, e.g. prototypes or material samples, can be used to facilitate the communication between users and developers in the development of new healthcare solutions based on textiles. The study presented in this paper was performed through participatory observation. The case is based on the development of a textile structure with three dimensional properties for long-term monitoring of EEG signals.

The main findings are that product representations support the exchange of knowledge and experiences between users and developers by five different facilitating roles:

Product representations serve to demonstrate (technical) solutions; to verbalise, i.e. serve to fill in were words are missing or when terms are not understood; to visualise, i.e. facilitating members of the development team to envision or adapt mental images of the intended future product; to stimulate, i.e. to inspire the development team to suggest new ideas or design; and, finally, to integrate, i.e. to unite different perspectives within the development team.

Conclusion: By using product representations during the development process to facilitate the dialogue between users and developers, the textile industry may take full advantage of the opportunities made available by new development of materials and new technology in order to fulfil users’ needs.

Samhörighet mellan olika "modes" i läroböcker2011Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Context and Methodological Decontextualisation in Nursing Research with Examples from Phenomenography2000Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 14, nr 1, s. 37-43Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In both human science and nursing research the concept of context is important. However, context can be understood in different ways. The aim of this article is to elucidate, discuss and problematize context, decontextualization and recontextualization in some health care-related phenomenographical studies. A further aim is to problematize the concet of context in a wider perspective of human complex ohenomena which characterize nursing research demand a broad contextual understanding. Both the local or immediate experiences of the phenomen of interest as well as the socio-cultural discourse. A balance between openness and pliability t the phenomenon is suggested. Reflection is considered an important tool in this process. Within phenomenography, the interest i s directed towards conceptions of certain aspects of the worlds. Thus, context in a wider sense is given a subordinate role. Accordingly, phenomenography is considered to have limited applicability in nursing research when complex phenomena are to be studied.

Digitally enabling sustainable food shopping: App glitches, practice conflicts, and digital failure2021Ingår i: Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, ISSN 0969-6989, E-ISSN 1873-1384, Vol. 61Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

New digital food platforms are being launched accompanied with the promise of also promoting more sustainable food consumption. However, despite some success, many of these efforts to digitally reconfigure consumers food practices fail. The aim of this paper is to empirically explore, conceptualize and explain such failures. Taking a practice theory approach, and drawing on a field experiment using the Karma app – an anti-food waste app – the paper shows that the inability of this app to promote a new way of acquiring food is due to glitches - app failures of different sorts - but also practice conflicts. Two types of practice conflicts, practice mismatch and practice competition, make the fostering of a new sustainable food provisioning practice difficult.

Local Fashionalities: Växbo Lin and WomenWeave2014Licentiatavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Global Fashion, via the logic of high-speed, large-scale industrial production and anachronistic high-volume consumption habits, causes significant social and environmental damage. Local Fashion is understood as part of the Slow Fashion movement that aims to change the functions of fashion so that they support or lead the quest to flourish within known human and planetary boundaries. This Licentiate thesis examines, through an exploratory narrative based on new and existing research, two Local Fashionalities. Växbo Lin is a small linen manufacturer/brand in Hälsingland, Sweden, producing new heritage home textiles. WomenWeave is a handloom social enterprise in Madhya Pradesh, India, making naya khadi. Their approaches and practices are presented and discussed vis-à-vis notions of “globality”, “locality”, design management, and the quest for sustainability. The narrative aims to improve understandings of what Local Fashion is, and contribute to the effort to design new fashion systems grounded in logic relevant to contemporary human needs and aspirations.

Messy space = creative space: Boundary work in organizational creativity2023Ingår i: Space and Organizing: On Spatial Agencing / [ed] Gustavo Guzman, Andreas Diedrich, and Franck Cochoy, Edward Elgar Publishing, 2023, s. 31-46Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

It is common knowledge that an organization can stimulate (or kill) creativity among its employees through office design, with colors and playful toys numbering among the key ingredients believed to make people creative. What is less known is how these and other spatial qualities influence work. This study looks at the connection between the space and creative work, with the help of boundary work. Using ethnographic methods, this study reveals how people mobilize and set up creative spaces (agencing space), and how such space helps (or doesn’t) people to work creatively (spatial agencing). Four different creative spaces are analyzed: hackathons, design thinking workshops, an innovation room, and an innovation helpdesk. It is shown how these spaces for creation can make creative practices legitimate, how temporality creates a sense of urgency, and how messiness signals what is expected of people. Furthermore, it is also shown how boundary practices help people engage in creative work.

Disappearing sensor: Textile based sensor for monitoring breathing2011Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The monitoring and interpretation of respiration pattern plays an important role for the early detection and the prevention of serious illness, such as asthma, sleeping apnea, bronchitis, and lung cancer. In this interdisciplinary project a system based on a smart shirt with integrated textile sensor for personal respiratory monitoring was developed. Due to the fact that textile products are flexible, washable and bring no discomfort to wearers, the smart shirtis an excellent interface for performing long term respiratory monitoring in real life situations outside the clinic. Two stripe liked sensors located on the chest and abdomen position respectively were integrated in a smart shirt. The sensors were made by coating with conductive silicone on the fabric surface of the smart shirt. Conductive silicone reflects compression or extension by resistance change and in this application resistance change can be utilized to indicate the respiratory pattern of the wearer. A prototype system was made to record the resistance change in real time and transmission to a PC or PDA for further processing. Snap button and conductive threads were used as the interface and transmission wires between the smart shirt and the recording system. To verify the performance, test were made with 10 subjects, whose spontaneous respiratory patterns were recorded during sitting still, walking and jogging. In addition, a number of abnormal respiratory conditions, such as deep breathing, hyperventilation and sleeping apnea were simulated. The results show the smart shirt performed in a very good manner, the system can sense and record the person's breathing during normal daily activities. The sleeping apnea simulation indicates potential application in diagnosis and clinical treatment. The smart shirt is soft and comfortable to use and enables long-term monitoring to be performed outside the laboratory.

The Lived Experience of Genital Warts: The Swedish Example2004Ingår i: Health Care for Women International, ISSN 0739-9332, E-ISSN 1096-4665, Vol. 25, nr 5, s. 489-502Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Our aim in this study was to analyze and describe young Swedish women's experiences of living with genital warts. Interviews with 10 young women, aged 16-21 years, were interpreted within a lifeworld hermeneutic tradition. The women experience themselves as victims of a disgusting disease. Furthermore, they appear to disregard the fact that their own lifestyles could be a risk factor for contracting venereal infections. On the other hand they get to know their bodies better after the gynecological examinations where the treatment begins. Their loss of innocence is considerable; thus it seems fair to compare this experience with earlier epochs' ideas about loss of virginity due to the first intercourse. Consequently the young women also start looking at themselves as adults, and they take responsibility for the consequences of their sexuality.

Consumover citizens and sustainability directives: views ‘from outside’ and “from within” consumers’ own logistics2012Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores emergent urban governmentalities that constitute cycling and public transport as forms of sustainable transport. The aim of the paper is to discuss discrepancies between examples of sustainability politics and campaigns, and people’s everyday consumption logistics, using the analytical frame of mundane consumption practices and ethnographies of “consumovers”. In conclusion, we suggest that the entity of the consumover citizen is a more productive way of discussing sustainable transport and consumer-logistics and that it may accommodate a less exclusionary policy sensibility.

An emerging view of scientific collaboration: Scientists' perspectives on factors that impact collaboration2003Ingår i: Journal of the American Society of Information Science and Technology, Vol. 54, nr 10, s. 952-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Collaboration is often a critical component in today's research that is dominated by complex problems, rapidly changing technology, dynamic growth of information and highly specialized areas of expertise. An individual scientist can seldom provide all of the expertise and resources necessary to address complex research problems. This paper describes collaboration among a group of scientists and discusses how their experiences are socially shaped. The scientists were members of a newly formed distributed, multi-disciplinary academic research center that was organized into four multi-disciplinary research groups. Each group had 14 to 34 members, including faculty, postdoctoral fellows and students, at four geographically dispersed universities. To investigate challenges that emerge in establishing scientific collaboration, data were collected about members' previous and current collaborative experiences, perceptions regarding collaboration, and work practices during the center's first year of operation. Interviews with members of one group and a center-wide sociometric survey were conducted. Data analysis has led to the development of a proposed framework that identifies multiple forms, or types, of collaboration that emerge among scientists (e.g., complementary and integrative collaboration) and their associated factors including personal compatibility, interrelationship of work, incentives and infrastructure. These results may help inform social and organizational practices needed to establish collaboration in distributed, multi-disciplinary research centers.
