Main actors in provision of fiction e-books in a small language market: a Swedish case2014Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

One of the consequences of the “small language” phenomenon is that the Swedish book industry is prey to the negative effects of globalization, since books have an international market and a Swedish multilingual citizen can buy e-books from international online booksellers. Publications in the local language are potentially in competition with books in English, and a local publisher or bookseller is competing with international publishers and Amazon.com

    Abstract [en]

The changes in Swedish education following the Bologna requirements resulted in the first Master's programmes in Library and Information Science. Two of them target information professionals working with digital resources and services and seeking to develop and update their knowledge. One programme is oriented to foreign students from all over the world, another to Swedish students. A Venn diagram illustrating the relationships among the elements of LIS was used to develop the curriculum for the international Master's programmes in Digital Libraries and Information Services. As this programme is delivered in distance learning mode there was a need to find ways of organizing the study process and deliver the study materials so that it suited this mode of education. The poster describes the content and design of the programme, as well as student reactions.

Overcoming the digital divide through the promotion of digital reading.2019Inngår i: Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries, QQML, ISSN 2241-1925, E-ISSN 2241-1925, ISSN 2241-1925, Vol. 7, nr 2, s. 193-203Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Inequalities in access and use of information and communication technologies are usually labelled the digital divide, which implies a strong gap between those who have access and use technologies and those who do not. The public library can play a significant role in enabling a society in overcoming the divide, which is a consequence of inequalities in the distribution of wealth, and the consequent inequalities in access to the appropriate technologies and networks. This paper describes an ongoing project in Lithuania, which aims to test the possibilities of digital reading as means of overcoming the digital divide.

What's newsworthy about 'information seeking'? An analysis of Google's News Alerts2013Inngår i: Information research, ISSN 1368-1613, E-ISSN 1368-1613, Vol. 17, nr 1Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The question guiding this research was to investigate to what extent has the concept of information seeking entered the journalistic discourse in the Internet news media. A database of 194 news items, was collected through a Google Alert service over a two year period. Content analysis, genre analysis and newsworthiness analysis were performed on the news items, as well as quantitative analysis of the types and geographical origins. More than 50% of items are found on newspaper, newsletters, magazines, and news sites. The countries providing the bulk of news related to information seeking are the USA and India. The most popular topics are health information seeking and government information seeking, followed by seeking through mobile technology and Freedom of Information issues. News reports and news features are dominating as compared to opinion genres. The impact and significance as well as timeliness and unexpectedness make the information seeking newsworthy. Conclusion: The concept of 'information seeking' has entered the public consciousness, as a result, mainly, of the impact of information seeking through mobile devices. Thirty percent of the news was based on research documents, part of which was research in the field of information seeking behaviour.
