Inspiration practice: a mixed method investigation of reference practices in art2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Writing has a peculiar place within higher art education. Students in all three cycles are required to produce written thesis work alongside their artistic work in order to receive a diploma. However, there is no established style or methodological approach to the written thesis work and the information practices of art students are not well researched.  This thesis attempts to discover and explain the information practices of art students by studying master’s theses from two Swedish universities using a mixed method. A quantitative study provides data on the types and subject of the references of interest to art students. While a qualitative study of a smaller number of theses is conducted in order to better understand the reference practices in the context of the art field. Results are analysed using a theoretical framework composed of Richard Whitley’s theories on the social and intellectual organization of the scientific fields and Björn Hammarfelt’s writing on reference practices within the humanities.  Findings confirm the previously documented importance of non-art material and print books, but also highlight the importance of various digital sources to students. It was also discovered that art students are unlikely to strictly follow established references styles in their theses. Instead, reference practices are highly individualized and related to variables such as degree of specialization within the individual program and the stylistic construction theses.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to examine if usability (UX) can have an impact on the proportion of returns on a website in the fashion industry. The growing trade through e-commerce has contributed to the fact that the proportion of returned goods is higher today than ever before. From a company's perspective and from a sustainability perspective, it is of interest to reduce the proportion of returns. The literature review shows that there are ways in which UX can influence the proportion of returns for e-retailers. It also shows that the return policy can induce certain customer behavior, the so-called new return culture, which contributes to the high proportion of returns. In this study, two quantitative studies are conducted that investigate how UX can affect the proportion of returns and customers' views on returns. The results of the studies show that UX has a small impact on the proportion of returns. This may imply that there are other aspects that have a greater impact on the proportion of returns, such as target group, policy and prices. Further research is needed to exclude a connect on between usability and the proportion of returns.

    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the extent to which Swedish communications professionals are prepared to use neuromarketing as a market research method. Neuromarketing applies technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging to study the brain's responses to marketing stimuli and is considered capable of obtaining ‘hidden information’ stored in individuals' brains, which traditional market research methods cannot provide. Despite these comparative advantages, the method is relatively unknown in Sweden today. This study seeks to answer two research questions: 1) What attitudes do communications professionals have towards neuromarketing? 2) Are the necessary preconditions for communications professionals to use neuromarketing satisfied? The study uses a quantitative approach and collected data from active communications professionals in Sweden through a survey. The theoretical framework is based on the six essential criteria presented by Greenhalgh et al. (2008) that need to be met in order for an innovation to be implemented. The survey had a low number of respondents and the result is therefore a broad generalization. The result shows that the communications professionals have extensive experience and consider themselves to have significant strategic influence, which is important for developing and managing the organization's brand. On the other hand, respondents had low awareness of neuromarketing and mainly a negative attitude towards it. None of the six criteria (Greenhalgh, et al., 2008) were met. The result suggests that Swedish communications professionals are not ready to accept and adopt neuromarketing and that the conditions for incorporating the method in their work are lacking today.

    Abstract [en]

The outcome of the Brexit referendum sparked a discussion in the media about ill-informed voters. There are few studies that investigate the information behaviour of voters, and even fewer of referendum voters. This thesis explores a small population of students at Scottish universities to gain insight in how they sought, received, and communicated information before the Brexit referendum. The aim is to investigate the students' information behaviour before they voted. Twenty-two students were interviewed, using a survey interviewing technique that also included open questions. The findings show that students were active, and interested, information seekers, but that they experienced a lack of quality information. Instead of trusting media sources, they turned to friends and family for information, although few changed their mind from their original conviction. The conclusions show that political awareness affected the information behaviour of the students, which is supported by Zaller’s Receive-Accept-Sample model, and that there was a high level of political awareness among the participants, in part because of the previous Scottish independence referendum. Wilson’s model of information behaviour was applied, and the analysis shows that intervening variables such as environment, role relations, and source characteristics affected information seeking, as well as other intervening variables like the lack of information and distrust of information sources.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine what makes people engage on the social media platform Instagram. Marketing on social media is becoming more and more popular and the biggest difference compared to traditional media is that the users of social media are participants in the marketing process. Engaged participants are thus a prerequisite for successful marketing on social media. How engagement on social media is created was investigated through a quantitative content analysis of three Swedish amusement parks' Instagram accounts, where the purpose was to find out which category of motifs in images resulted in the highest and lowest number of likes. The images were all posted in the summer of 2017. The results of the content analysis were afterwards used in qualitative semi-structured interviews in order to find out why some image motifs engaged more than others. By analyzing the results with an analysis tool based on previous studies, the results were reached. The results showed that images with motifs of amusement parks' various rides and pool attractions achieved the highest numbers of likes on average because they created a high level of emotional engagement among users. Processed images, which contained text and graphic elements, achieved the lowest number of likes on average. The processed image motif created a low degree of engagement as the images were not considered visually appealing, nor did they produce positive feelings or happy memories to the same extent as the motifs in the category of rides and pool attractions.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to investigate how a common web-identity can be conveyed on a website when a company is being bought through acquisition. The specific examination is performed on the website of Donald’s foto after their acquisition of Torins in Borås. Qualitative interviews have been conducted with customers and staff from both companies to gain insight regarding strengths which is considered important to merge after the buyout. The conclusion of this paper is that two formerly competing groups on the same market can very well unite into one common web-identity through applied web design as long as they have similar goals with their corporate identities. Suggestions for website development is to create a united graphic webprofile, how service and knowledge can be conveyed on the website and how the design can be improved.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines co-workers’ roles as organisational and brand ambassadors. The purpose is to investigate to which extent the co-workers at the destination organisation Visit Dalarna act as ambassadors for the organisation and how this relates to the brand. The theoretical framework is based on the three functions of an organisational brand presented by Dahlqvist and Melin (2010): the brand as means of governance, as a way of creating value, and that of carrying identity. Qualitative interviews with five co-workers and one manager at Visit Dalarna constitute the empirical material. The results confirm existing research on co-worker ambassadorship that claims knowledge and engagement to be defining and crucial aspects of a brand ambassador. Furthermore, the results suggest that these two dimensions are even more multi-dimensional than earlier indicated. The engagement is constituted in both verbal and non-verbal expressions, and the knowledge involves aspects of both the organisation, the work-related facts, and professional performance.

Classification of Fiction Genres: Text classification of fiction texts from Project Gutenberg2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Stylometric analysis in text classification is most often used in authorship attribution studies. This thesis used a machine learning algorithm, the Naive Bayes Classifier, in a text classification task comparing stylometric and lexical features. The texts were extracted from the Project Gutenberg website and were comprised of three genres: detective fiction, fantasy, and science fiction. The aim was to see how well the classifier performed in a supervised learning task when it came to discerning genres from one another. R was used to extract the texts from Project Gutenberg and Python script was used to run the experiment. Approximately 1978 texts were extracted and preprocessed before univariate filtering and tf-idf weighting was used as the lexical feature while average sentence length, average word length, number of characters, number of punctuation marks, number of uppercase words, number of title case words, and parts-of-speech tags for nouns, verbs, and adjectives were generated as the feature sets for the topic independent stylometric features. Normalization was performed using the ℓ² norm for the tf-idf weighting, with the ℓ² norm and z-score standardization for the stylometric features. Multinomial Naive Bayes was performed on the lexical feature set and Gaussian Naive Bayeson the stylometric set, both with 10-fold cross-validation. Precision was used as the measure by which to assess the performance of the classifier. The classifier performed better in the lexical features experiment than the stylometric features experiment, suggesting that downsampling, more stylometric features, as well as more classes would have been beneficial.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish digital book market has not seen the same success rate as English speaking countries have. Instead, the digital book has grown slowly, with libraries being the front runners. But in the past few years, new players have entered the commercial market and subscription services have gained many new users. Research on these subscription services has been scarce. This thesis aims to explore librarians’ experiences, viewpoints and attitudes towards their digital book services, subscription services and what effect they might have on the public library. The goal with this thesis are to generate new knowledge and contribute to a deeper understanding in regard to the current situation. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with four participating librarians. The result was analysed through a thematic analysis based on the theoretical framework. The study found that the librarians consider digital books to have great potential, but at the same time there are a lot of restrictions concerning their current situation. A majority of the interviewees felt they did not have enough time, money, resources or staff in order to manage their digital books. They did not however feel threatened by subscription services on the market. They did report to have noticed an increase of subscription services, but they also experienced that a lot of users of subscription services were also users of the library, which led them to believe that the library so far has not been majorly affected but might be in the future, depending on the subscription growth and quality.

    Abstract [sv]

Sedan drygt tre år tillbaks går vårt nätverk under beteckningen HIBOLIRE (The Nordic-Baltic-Russian Network on the History of Books, Libraries and Reading). En bok med titeln Library Spirit in the Nordic and Baltic Countries – Historical Perspectives har just blivit klar..

    Abstract [en]

The theme of this thesis is the professional ethics of public librarians. Qualitative interviews have been conducted with fourteen public librarians, with the aim to investigate their thoughts·and opinions concerning professional ethics and their experiences of ethical dilemmas in professional situations.

The result shows that the majority of the librarians often discuss problems concerning what's right or wrong but that the discussions are conducted on the basis of practical situations and not in terms of professional ethics. The majority have vague ideas of how the term professional ethics should be applied on the work of public librarians, though all the interviewees consider the professional ethical discussion to be important.

We examine the librarians opinions and experiences of ethical dilemmas conceming four subject areas: the principle of the librarian as a neutral and nonrestricting information intermediary, the principle of equal treatment of all the library visitors, difficulties. concerning media selection and the problems based upon the librarians flexibility towards the intemal rules of the library. The librarians experienced the behaviour towards the visitors as the greatest problem. Media selection is also concidered to be a problem area. Neither the role as a neutral intermediary nor the flexibility towards intemal rules creates major ethical dilemmas for the interviewed librarians.

The results of our study is put in relation to theories concerning the role of professiona! ethics in the development of a profession.

    Abstract [en]

This article presents the research findings of a study on task complexity and information-seeking activities in real-life work tasks. The focus was on perceived task complexity, which was determined according to the task performers' prior knowledge about the task ahead. This view on task complexity is closely related to research considering task uncertainty and analyzability. Information-seeking activities considered were a need to acquire different types of information and the subsequent use of different types of sources. The research data were mainly collected by (1) self-recorded journals that were filled out by municipal administrators in the course of performing their ordinary work duties (altogether 78 task diaries), and (2) subsequent interviews. The results indicated that there is a relatively strong relationship between types of information and types of sources. The effects of task complexity made experts more attractive as a source than other people and all types of documentary sources.

Information literacy development among students has been a subject of interest among researchers and librarians for many years. A unanimous understanding, as a result of research and professional experience, is the importance of a contextualized approach and sustainable collaboration between faculty and librarians. The Borås Model, a collaborative model for the development of information literacy among students, describes how responsibilities can be divided and how actions can be shared to create embedded Information Literacy (IL) modules in university programmes. At the University of Boras, faculty and librarians collaborate according to this model since 2009. As a starting point the librarians discussed how to design IL elements to enable the students’ development of information literacy gradually during their time of study. The suggested recommendations are based on the experience from teaching information searching, from observations of how students behave in these situations and from reference work in the library. The focus will be on learning and understanding to help the students to develop an analytic and reflective attitude to information, to information sources and to search results, enabling them to adopt their search behaviour to the changing environment of information sources and information publications. They will also be introduced to important information resources that they will need in their profession. The implementation of the model is still in its cradle. This paper describes the implementation process at the Registered Nurse Programme and the Systems and Computer Science Programme, showing how the suggested recommendations were adopted to the actual needs of the programmes. At the Textile Design Bachelor Programme, the overall planning of the IL modules is presented, and the first module will start from autumn semester 2010.

    Abstract [en]

The rapid technological development of the media and the Internet has brought new ways to communicate and socialize. Social media is an undeniable force with its fast, simple and informal communication style and health care today is a relatively new concept to convey health information through social networks. This provides opportunities for various healthcare organizations to market themselves and pass out health information but also the responsibility of the challenges and risks related to information posted, the organization's reputation, privacy risks and personal integrity. The thesis intends to explore how the BVC perceive this form of forums regarding obstacles and opportunities and what they think about Facebook as a communication channel for communicating health information to parents. The aim was also to investigate how the BVC through social media can contribute their dedication and skills on Facebook and how BVC feel they can support parents through Facebook. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four different health care activities and then transcribed. Based on theory and empirical sections were then made comparisons to find similarities and differences. The analysis was based on various themes in the interview guide. The results show that health care businesses do not see any disadvantages to a Facebook page about good review held and inappropriate posts will be deleted. Questions of a personal nature and the treatments are prohibited due to patient confidentiality. It´s important for healthcare businesses to market themselves. The Facebook page is used as information on which the BVC nurse demonstrates the commitment by informing and encouraging participation in parent groups and lectures on the BVC. It´s considered important to be on Facebook today where the majority of the audience are today.

    Abstract [en]

In the light of the increasing globalization and immigration to Sweden, this thesis examines how the employees at Swedish NGO’s perceive the intercultural dialog with immigrants. The NGO’s are recognized as an important part in the ongoing work of integration. At the same time the employees often have a very limited formal education within the communication field and the NGO’s often lack a communications officer and a communications section. These employees are the ones that in their daily work meet the immigrants and are expected to help the immigrants integrate, meet swedes and learn the language. Using theories within the field of intercultural communication and intercultural communication competence, this thesis has examined how three employees at three NGO’s in Lund perceive the intercultural dialog with immigrants. The conclusions drawn are that the dialog is not perceived as intercultural at all, but as interpersonal, with more emphasis placed on the personality and no importance at all on cultural differences. Knowledge of Swedish and to have enough time to communicate are perceived as of great importance for the dialog. The context in which the dialogs take place seems to be crucial for how the dialog is perceived.

    Abstract [en]

In the wake of the increased digitalisation of the Swedish society, people who experience difficulties to utilise digital services turn to the public library for assistance. As a result, questions concerning how and to what extent the public library is supposed to support people in need of digital services is raised amongst the public library staff. The purpose of this thesis is thus to examine public library managers understanding of what role the institution should uphold in the midst of the depicted development, and how they enact in order to implement the defined role within the organisations they manage. The findings are based on qualitative interviews with seven public library managers from different municipalities i Västra Götalandsregionen. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using qualitative content analysis methodology, and the results were interpreted by means of Shaffer’s (2018) criterias for social sustainability within public library organisations. The findings display that the public library managers perceive a direct link between the Swedish library act and the role as information supplier and tutor of people in need of digital support. In order to utilise this understanding, the public library managers undertake various actions including securing good communications with staff, users and local politicians, facilitation of adequate training for staff members etc. while trying to establish abovenamed role, chiefly amongst the employees. Measured against Shaffer’s criterias and against literature on the viewpoints of librarians, users and politicians, these actions may have positive as well as negative effect on the public library’s social sustainability.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on how librarians describe their work towards users with intellectual disabilities which is a priority group in the control documents for the public libraries. These aims for the user group are to be found in The Swedish library Act, Swedish Agency for Accessible Media (MTM) and Swedish Arts Council and they make up the foundation for this study. The aim of this thesis is to gather knowledge about how to get users with intellectual disabilities to get included and feel welcomed in the library. Three main questions were asked: How does the six librarians in our thesis describe their work towards users with intellectual disabilities? Which challenges does the librarians experience? How do the librarians deal with the identified challenges? In this study qualitative interviews were accomplished with librarians from six different public libraries. M. K. Buckland´s Access to Information (in Information and information systems 1991) was partly used as a model to analyze our empiric material. Buckland, who has a long and solid library background in his profession, identifies six types of barriers and how to overcome the challenge of getting access to information. The results show that collection development is a priority for the libraries and also suitable in four of Buckland´s six barriers of access to information. One conclusion is that several librarians in the study felt content with their efforts since they had a good book collection for the user group. Three other factors that had high priority for the librarians were cooperating with external organizations, programs on the library especially suited for the user group and doing outreaching work to get the user group to come the library.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to investigate how librarians work with acquisitions of multilingual literature and how their work has changed due to the European refugee crisis. In this study four main librarians with a special responsibility for this type of acquisitions have been interviewed. The questions were created to explore their experiences of changes, difficulties and existing qualifications. The study uses a new theoretical model, inspired by Evans and Saponaros’ (2005) “Collection development process”, to illustrate how librarians create relevant collections. Since the model was not enough, Andrew Abbott´s theoretical conception “External sources for system change” was added. The conception completed the model, since the study’s aim also included changes.

The findings were that all librarians had identified changes in their work with acquisitions of literature. For example, they all pointed out language barriers and difficulties locating literature as the most palpable factors. All respondents found that the library’s purpose was to reflect the societal needs, which constantly change. Another challenge was therefore that the librarians constantly needed to redirect the way they worked with collection development, since the users and their needs aren’t always the same. Another finding was that collaboration between libraries and/or other institutions may become more common. Sharing of knowledge seems to be a necessity since the challenges are of different natures. They are not something foreign or unexpected, but they might require the libraries to ally in order to bring these tests to a soluble level.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to find out whether there is anycollaboration between libraries and daily activity-centres inScania and how librarians and care staff use literature towardspersons with, for example, intellectual disabilities. Furthermorethe aim is to examine if there are any views on how cooperationbetween the organizations could be developed. The method used is web surveys with mainly open endedquestions sent to both librarians and care workers in dailyactivity-centres.The study shows that most collaboration today is concerned withthe participants in the daily activities performing tasks at thelibraries. Many of the librarians also states that they offer bookdeposits. A few libraries occasionally offers reading aloudactivitiesfor the user group. Most of the daily activity-centres inthe study have groups that visit the library regularly. There seemsto be an interest for closer cooperation but lack of resources isregarded by the librarians as the main obstacle.Regarding the purpose of reading aloud for the user group itseems as if both professional categories see it as dominantly apleasant experience for the participants in the daily activities. Thecare workers also stress aloud reading as pastime and reading as ameans to create community. Librarians too stresses the view ofpastime. An important difference is that reading as a way offinding out facts seems to be much more important to the careworkers while the librarians much stronger press the view ofreading as a form of therapy.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of my bachelor thesis is to create an understanding of how public library employees express the public libraries´ assignments and tasks. To help fulfill the purpose, I have assumed the following issues

    • What do the study's public library employees think that the public library's mission in society should or should not be?

    • To what extent does the study's public library staff perform daily tasks that are described as being outside the remit of the public libraries?

    • According to the study´s public library staff, how clear are the public libraries´ guidelines when it comes to which tasks the staff should perform and which ones to say no to?

    • Are there any differences between how public library staff's existing service titles look at the public libraries' assignments and tasks? If so, what do these differences look like?

The method I have used is quantitative as I sent out a web survey to all main libraries in Sweden's 290 municipalities. The results were analyzed using previous research and the Four spaces model, which through its four spaces can help to analyze how the library activities work. The result shows that respondents in the web survey want tasks such as information and knowledge mediation, democracy and reading promotion to be included in the assignment. On the other hand, they think that tasks such as data printing, banking affairs and public affairs do not belong to the assignment. According to the respondents, the guidelines regarding which tasks the employees should say no to are unclear.

Performing the school librarian: Using the Butlerian concept of performativity in the analysis of school librarian identities2016Ingår i: Journal of Librarianship and Information Science, ISSN 0961-0006, E-ISSN 1741-6477, Vol. 0, nr 0, s. 1-13Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reports on a research study using the Butlerian notion of performativity in the analysis of school librarian identity. The purpose is to explore how librarians at secondary and upper-secondary schools perform their identities as school librarians. Fourteen in-depth interviews were conducted. The analysis was driven by the theoretical concepts of performative identity, recognizability and intelligibility. Performing identity was found to be part of six work-tasks: to express, to position, to make visible, to remind, to inform and to explain. In conclusion, the study contributes to research on school librarian challenges, pursuits and strategies when performing professional identity in relation to teachers. Focusing on the performative acts of school librarians can contribute to understandings of their everyday challenges and deepen the understanding of the profession.
