The acquisition of e-books in the libraries of the Swedish higher education institutions.2014Inngår i: Information research, ISSN 1368-1613, E-ISSN 1368-1613, Vol. 19, nr 2Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction. Our aim is to compare the advantages and problems of e-book acquisition identified in research literature to those experienced by two Swedish university libraries. Method. A literature review was used to identify the main issues related to acquisition of e-books by academic libraries. The data for comparison were collected through case studies in two Swedish universities. Document analysis, interviews and personal experience were used for data collection. Results. The main drivers of e-book acquisition by Swedish academic libraries are the perceived needs of the users. E-books are regarded as potentially useful for solving some of the problems of library service. A number of challenges and problems identified by the participants in the case studies coincide with those that were derived from the literature review. Conclusions. The problems of e-book acquisition in academic libraries seem to be common to the economically strong Western countries. University librarians see certain advantages of e-books for their users and libraries. Publishers and academic librarians expect that e-books would not lose the advantages that printed books offered to them. Hence, publishers restrict the usage of e-books to ensure revenues as if from selling individual copies. Librarians try to regain the same level of control over e-book collections as for printed materials.

Information behaviour research and information systems development: the SHAMAN project, an example of collaboration2010Inngår i: Information research, ISSN 1368-1613, E-ISSN 1368-1613, Vol. 15, nr 4Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Goal. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the role that information behaviour research may play in information system design. Theory. The paper explores the value of use cases in defining information requirements and considers their wider application in information behaviour research. Method. An analysis of the literature on long-term digital preservation systems (and, to a degree, digital libraries) is used as well as analysis of interviews undertaken in the course of the SHAMAN project. These interviews fall into the category of contextual inquiry as an explicit step for understanding who the customers really are and how they work on a day-to-day basis. Results. Four broad categories of needs in long term preservation are identified in literature: society at large, which has requirements for long-term preservation; organizational requirements; organizational staff who must operate the preservation system, undertaking the functions of ingest, access and delivery to end-users; end-users who need to draw upon the digital resource to help them with their work, study or research. The Universal Modelling Language with stereotypical actors and use cases offers information behaviour researchers a way to engage with system developers in a creative synergy.

Delphi investigation into the research needs in Swedish librarianship2009Inngår i: Information research, ISSN 1368-1613, E-ISSN 1368-1613, Vol. 14, nr 4Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction. Reports the conduct of a national survey in Sweden to establish the desired research priorities for libraries. The research sought to establish what evidence-base is needed for evidence-based practice. Method. The Delphi method was employed to solicit opinions on the kinds of research needed by libraries of all kinds in Sweden. Research topics were obtained from practising librarians and identified in the professional literature and discussion lists. Two rounds of questionnaire survey using the sixty-four themes extracted were followed by an interactive workshop. Panel members were nominated by the practitioners themselves. Analysis. Standard statistical methods were employed to derive means and standard deviations and the Spearman rank correlation statistic was used to compare the results from different library sectors. Results. Consensus among panel members was not achieved during the survey rounds, but the workshop resulted in the identification of the ten highest priority themes. The public, regional and school libraries are more concerned with relation of libraries to education and society at large, while academic and special libraries emphasize the changes in scholarly and business communication and the impact of new technologies. Conclusions. The consensus among different Swedish library sectors regarding the top research agenda can be reached only conditionally. Strong differences between them remain and have to be taken into account when implementing the agenda. The panel members regard the library future as uncertain and prioritize the topics that can help to foster readers and library users and strengthen strategic positions of libraries.

Information behaviour in research network building by relocated scholars in Swedish higher education: a report on a pilot project2008Inngår i: Information research, ISSN 1368-1613, E-ISSN 1368-1613, Vol. 13, nr 4Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction. A pilot investigation is reported into the information behaviour of scholars relocating to Sweden in building their research networks. Method. Using activity theory as a conceptual framework for the study, structured interviews (using mainly open questions) were carried out with eight scholars in different disciplines and institutions. The resulting data were analysed using the qualitative analysis package Atlas. ti. Results. Information systems and technologies play little part in the information behaviour of relocated scholars in building, or re-building, their research support networks. Integration into the academic institution is easier than integration into Swedish society and language issues arise mainly in respect of the latter. Conclusion. Re-located scholars adopt interpersonal communication as the dominant information behaviour in building their research networks. They are aided, in Sweden, by the generally welcoming and supportive atmosphere of their departments (although one respondent in the social sciences noted problems of conflict), but experience difficulty in establishing social networks within Swedish society.

Credibility assessments of everyday life information on Facebook: a sociocultural investigation of a group of mothers2017Inngår i: Information research, ISSN 1368-1613, E-ISSN 1368-1613, Vol. 22, nr 2, artikkel-id paper750Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction. The article explores whether members of a Facebook group view the group as a source of credible information and how they evaluate the credibility of information provided in the group. Method. The data for this study were collected using semi-structured interviews with 19 members of a closed Facebook group for mothers. Analysis. The constant comparison technique was used to analyse the interview transcripts which were interpreted from a sociocultural perspective using the concepts of cultural tools and cognitive authority. Results. The findings show that although the participants used the Facebook group to seek information, they did not consider it a credible source of information. The study contributes the insight that assessments depended on the domain of the information and that participants distinguished between information offered in a professional or a personal capacity. A number of cultural tools were employed to negotiate credibility assessments, including language use and writing style, expertise, life experience, educational background, and similar lifestyles, parenting values and worldviews. Conclusions. The Facebook group was characterised by a combination of familiar and unfamiliar others, of the sharing and seeking of information from different domains and of first- and second-hand knowledge. The participants employed various cultural tools to assess credibility in this mixture of knowledge domains and information sources.

Transformative power of information: managing personal history and culture in migration2019Inngår i: Information research, ISSN 1368-1613, E-ISSN 1368-1613Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction. This study explores how personal information management practices could be used to help migrating individuals manage their cultural heritage legacies and to investigate how digital collections of libraries, archives, museums and other information institutions could be utilised by individuals to support further discovery of and learning about their cultural heritages.

Method. This paper presents the results of a qualitative research study conducted on a purposive sample of 10 Croatian expatriates living in Europe and on expatriates from various countries living in Croatia. Participants were interviewed about their personal information management practices with a focus on immigration experiences and cultural information needs. Participants used an information source relevant for their personal collections or needs and described their experiences in semi-structured diaries.

Results. Migration motivates people to assess the value of personal information and objects and to invest their effort in describing, safeguarding and sharing documents or items with significant value. A stronger motivation exists for using libraries, archives and museum collections when a need arises resulting from a knowledge gap about items in personal collections.

Conclusions. Personal information management practices can make a significant difference in managing personal cultural heritage legacy. Collections of information institutions can constitute a part of those practices.

The public library user and the charter tourist: two travellers, one analogy2013Inngår i: Information research, ISSN 1368-1613, E-ISSN 1368-1613, Vol. 18, nr 3Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction. A new theoretical model, relevant to library and information science, is implemented in this paper. The aim of this study is to contribute to the theoretical concepts of library and information science by introducing an ethnological model developed for investigating charter tourist styles thereby increasing our knowledge of users' approaches to public libraries. Method. This is an empirically grounded study. One hundred and eighty-two library visitors were interviewed at Swedish public libraries during 2011. Analysis. Both quantitative and qualitative content analysis were used in the treatment of the empirical data. Results. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part introduces the ethnological model. The second part presents the application of the model on the empirical data. The third part identifies possible research questions concerning public library user approaches. Conclusions. This study shows that it is fruitful to apply a travel analogy for mapping user approaches to public libraries. Five public library user approaches are identified. The application can be used as a tool in order to discuss priorities in public library activities.

    Twitter conversation patterns related to research papers2016Inngår i: Information research, ISSN 1368-1613, E-ISSN 1368-1613, Vol. 21, nr 2, artikkel-id SM2Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction. This paper deals with what academic texts and datasets are referred to and discussed on Twitter. We used document object identifiers as references to these items. Method. We streamed tweets from the Twitter application programming interface including the strings "dx" and "doi" while simultaneously streaming tweets posted by and to the authors of the tweets captured. By doing so we were able to capture tweets referring to a digital object as well as the replies to these tweets. Analysis. The captured tweets were analysed in different ways, both quantitatively and qualitatively. 1) Bibliometric analyses were made on the digital object identifiers, 2) the thirty of thesee most mentioned and retweeted were analysed and 3) the conversations with at least ten tweets were analysed using content analysis. Results. Research from the natural sciences was most prominent, as was research published in open access journals. Different types of conversations relating to the digital objects were found, both when looking at them qualitative and their visual structure in terms of nodes and arcs. The conversations involved academics but were not always academic in nature. Conclusions. Digital object identifiers were mainly referred to for self-promotion, as conversation starters or as arguments in discussions.

    Abstract [en]

Introduction. Research linking sustainable development and information science has been sparse. In addition, while the United Nations early on recognized the importance of information for sustainable development, there has been very little progress in linking sustainable development with information related issues, such as information and communication technologies. A basic problem is the difficulty in connecting highly flexible concepts such as information andinformation society to the complex concept of sustainable development. Method. This paper reviews the development of the concept of sustainable development, discusses various failures connecting it to information as a strategic resource and attempts an articulation of the concept of sustainable information, building on sustainable development. Conclusions. Sustainable information is seen to consist of two distinct parts: information for sustainable development (seen as a resource for the project of sustainable development) and development of sustainable information (creating sustainable information and communication technologies). It is argued that an articulation of sustainable information is important for information science and neighbouring research disciplines. The paper concludes with suggestions on integrating concepts of sustainable information into educational programmes for information professionals. Specific emphasis is placed on sustainable information as an area to be developed within information ethics

From HTML to XML and more? A case study of language games within portal server technology implementation2010Inngår i: Information research, ISSN 1368-1613, E-ISSN 1368-1613, Vol. 15, nr 3Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose. We investigate one specific case in which the transformation from a HTML to an XML-based organizational Web environment was pursued through portal server technology. The aim is to understand the dynamics of negotiating functionality when there are so many more options available than merely shifting to XML. Method. We report the early phases of a longitudinal study in which various members of the organization, as well as developers, are repeatedly interviewed in order to map changing insights and attitudes. The array of misunderstandings observed is discussed through Wittgenstein's concept of language games. Results. Ordinary users are seen to have substantial difficulties in understanding and discussing the new technology. Their emphasis is on sophisticated applications that developers were unable to implement in time for the launching of the portal. Members of the project group and the steering group also evidenced difficulties in communicating on the key language games on motives, priority, features, implementation and timeline. Originality. The use of language games, and a longitudinal qualitative study, supplies an in-depth view of complications connected to the implementation of information systems that involves existing information practices.

Losing the art and craft of know-how: capturing vanishing embodied knowledge in the 21st Century2017Inngår i: Information research, ISSN 1368-1613, E-ISSN 1368-1613, Vol. 22, nr 4, artikkel-id 1617Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction.  The study examines the information practices of enthusiast car restorers in order to gain a greater understanding of embodied information practices.

Conceptual framework. The study is informed by a range of different theoretical approaches including practice theory, sense-making and Foucauldian, multimodal and critical discourse analysis.

Methodology. The study uses an ethnographic approach, using semi-structured interviews and in the garage ethnographic observation.  Analysis was undertaken using an inductive, thematic approach.

Findings. Enthusiast car restorers see the lack of information resources relating to their hobby as a challenge as much as a barrier. Car clubs and informal social networks of fellow enthusiasts provide both mentoring and moral support. Learning by doing is central to developing embodied knowledge. Participants describe working on their cars as providing them with a sense of achievement that was otherwise missing in their lives.

Conclusion. The study’s findings show that enthusiast car restorers live in a complex information world, where social networks and learning by doing are central. The study’s findings in relation to alienation, achievement and identity suggest that research into embodied practices may have a broader significance than has been hitherto recognised.

A practice theoretical exploration of information sharing and trust in a dispersed community of design scholars2013Inngår i: Information research, ISSN 1368-1613, E-ISSN 1368-1613, Vol. 18, nr 4Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction. This paper presents an exploration of information sharing and trust in a geographically dispersed network of design scholars. Method. The study used a practice theory approach to identify aspects of trust in relation to information sharing. The empirical material consists of 15 in-depth interviews with design scholars from four Nordic countries and field notes from workplace visits. Analysis. The interview transcripts and field notes were categorised in accordance with three themes derived in synergy from practice theory and the empirical material. Results. A number of strategies for assessing and creating trust in relation to information sharing were identified. Depending on the dimension of practice in analytical focus, different aspects of trust emerge. Conclusions. Trust issues connected to information sharing appear in relation to the information to be shared, the people involved, the tools used for sharing, and the place where information sharing occurs. The practice-theoretical perspective has proven effective in order to identify and capture the elusive phenomenon of trust in connection to information sharing.
