Parental Grief and Prayer in the Middle Ages: Religious Coping in Swedish Miracle Stories2015In: Collegium : Studies across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, ISSN 1796-2986, E-ISSN 1796-2986, Vol. 18Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on expressions of bereavement and religious coping in medieval miracle stories from Sweden. The stories come from the collections of St. Birgitta (Bridget) of Sweden, the Blessed Bishop Nicolaus Hermanni (Sw. Nils Hermansson) of Linköping and the Blessed Katarina of Vadstena, and were recorded in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

Catherine M. Sanders’s modern five stages of bereavement have been used as the theory of analysis through Kay Talbot’s adaptation of the theory for parents in grief. This theoretical foundation has provided new insights into how parental grief was expressed in medieval Sweden – and in stark contrast to Continental research on the same topic. Parents of both sexes expressed their grief outwardly through tears and crying, and a reluctance to accept that their children were dead. Throughout the miracle stories, lay people constructed their own prayers for miraculous intervention without the aid of any priests. This makes fathers and mothers in medieval Sweden agents of their own in terms of praying to God and being able to construct their own forms of religious coping.

Prayer in Peasant Communities: Ideals and Practices of Prayer in the Late Medieval Ecclesiastical Province of Uppsala, Sweden2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study has been to identify, explain and delineate praying among peasant communities in the ecclesiastical province of Uppsala, Sweden. Four aspects have been examined through the perspectives of ideals and practices, namely the standards of prayer, devotional prayer, prayer in times of need and prayer cultures. The standards of prayer considered the physical and mental behaviour of the praying peasant woman or man. The most ordinary way to act during prayer was to stand with hands together, palm against palm, and to pray in the vernacular often using mental themes to enhance the devotion. Devotional prayers were foremost the three ‘standard’ prayers Paternoster, Hail Mary and Apostolic Creed, and could be used separately or combined. Prayer in times of need was possibly considered a matter of praying to saints, something that cannot be proven to have been either practiced or recommended on other, ordinary occasions where God and the Virgin Mary were considered the proper recipients of prayer. A few authentic prayers exist that were possibly said by peasant women and men in connection with miracles and these show the ability to construct elaborate prayers and to propose businesslike agreements with saints. These three prayers were required knowledge for a peasant woman or man and were put to the test in order to become a godparent, and were therefore made available in the vernacular by the parish priests. Ways to maintain the prayer cultures were through mnemonic techniques, and indulgences stipulating and confirming prayers used or to be used in connection with certain churches, days and places within the churches. Name saints could also be used, since the person and the name saint were considered to have a special bond. Prayer could also be used as protection for the living; since a prayer was considered to generate either merits or favours from a celestial patron to his or her client. The prayer life of those belonging to peasant communities was both elaborate and full of nuances.

Prayer Practices among Ordinary People in the Late Middle Ages2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I will present key findings of my concluded project on the prayer life of peasant communities in late medieval Sweden, conducted at the University of Gothenburg 2005–2010. The aim of the project has been to identify, explain and delineate praying among peasant communities in late medieval Sweden. Four aspects have been examined through the perspectives of ideals and practices, namely the standards of prayer, devotional prayer, prayer in times of need and prayer cultures. Focus in my paper will be practices of prayer, especially those occurring in connection with the praying for miracles.

    Abstract [en]

A highly debated subject in contemporary Sweden is the practice of end of term ceremonies being held in church buildings. The debate began in the 1990s but the practice as such can be traced back at least to the late eighteenth century. Critique of the ceremonies at a national level was probably initiated by a local prohibition in 1996 at Uddevala municipality – a decision intended to favour plurality (at first out of respect for secular Humanists, but later reinterpreted as out of respect for Muslims).

This study was aimed at not only exploring the practice of end of term ceremonies held in churches, but also to investigate negotiations and re-negotiations of the role of religion in the Swedish compulsory school (Swedish: Grundskola) apart from the school subject of Religious Education, from the 1990s to 2016.

A multitude of sources have been used for the study such as databases, minutes, policy documents, media debates, legislation (both political and ecclesiastical), guidelines and curricula. Previous research on the subject is almost non-existent, except for a number of studies regarding the shifting role of the Church of Sweden from state church to semi-independent church in the year 2000. The study is thereby intended not only as a contribution of facts concerning these ceremonies, but also as an interpretation of the facts presented.

The results show a complex and vast practice of school ceremonies held in churches beyond the acceptance or prohibition of a particular ceremony. Conflicting facts, laws and policies are made visible and implicit diverse understandings emerge regarding the role of religion in society in general and in schools in particular. Hence, the study should not be seen as taking a position on either side of the debate about prohibition of the practice, but as an exploration of different standpoints regarding the role of the Church of Sweden in contemporary Sweden’s compulsory schools. An emerging aspect is the key function of schools in enabling pupils to understand the role of religion in society and what it means to live in a global community. End of term ceremonies held in churches are viewed as a game board where debates are set in motion and where different ideals clash, are negotiated and re-negotiated. Key features in these discussions concern the use of confessional ecclesiastical space in obligatory non-confessional education; church buildings as places of education; clerical roles when leading end of term ceremonies; pupils’ compulsory presence; religious symbols in education; attendance at religious activities; and hymns as possible means of discrimination.

As far as the interpretation of the issues that have emerged in the study is concerned, three claims can be made.  Firstly, end of term ceremonies held in churches have fluctuated in number during the examined period of time; secondly, there is competition between the Swedish state’s school agencies and the Church of Sweden regarding the importance of religion for children; and thirdly, the concept of religion is interpreted in secular terms by the Swedish state’s school agencies, in conflict with the Church of Sweden’s religious understanding of the concept.

    Abstract [sv]

To Explore the Divine Will in Prayer2010Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

How were holy persons selected as recipients for prayer? Most often, miracle stories only tell of the praying person having already made the decision of recipient, but there were exceptions from this pattern: the habit of casting lots to explore the divine will of whom to address in prayer. Lot casting, a seldom studied religious habit will be in focus in my paper.

Kursguider, kursinstruktion och kursbeskrivning: Ett rundabordssamtal om kursguidepraktiker i högre utbildning2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Characteristics and outcome among 14,933 adult cases of in-hospital cardiac arrest: A nationwide study with the emphasis on gender and age.2017In: American Journal of Emergency Medicine, ISSN 0735-6757, E-ISSN 1532-8171, Vol. 35, no 12, p. 1839-1844, article id S0735-6757(17)30451-5Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIM: To investigate characteristics and outcome among patients suffering in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) with the emphasis on gender and age.

METHODS: Using the Swedish Register of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, we analyzed associations between gender, age and co-morbidities, etiology, management, 30-day survival and cerebral function among survivors in 14,933 cases of IHCA. Age was divided into three ordered categories: young (18-49years), middle-aged (50-64years) and older (65years and above). Comparisons between men and women were age adjusted.

RESULTS: The mean age was 72.7years and women were significantly older than men. Renal dysfunction was the most prevalent co-morbidity. Myocardial infarction/ischemia was the most common condition preceding IHCA, with men having 27% higher odds of having MI as the underlying etiology. A shockable rhythm was found in 31.8% of patients, with men having 52% higher odds of being found in VT/VF. After adjusting for various confounders, it was found that men had a 10% lower chance than women of surviving to 30days. Older individuals were managed less aggressively than younger patients. Increasing age was associated with lower 30-day survival but not with poorer cerebral function among survivors.

CONCLUSION: When adjusting for various confounders, it was found that men had a 10% lower chance than women of surviving to 30days after in-hospital cardiac arrest. Older individuals were managed less aggressively than younger patients, despite a lower chance of survival. Higher age was, however, not associated with poorer cerebral function among survivors.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Cultural Differences in Fashion Magazines: Targeting Vogue2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how different cultures within clothing and fashion are featured in the magazine Vogues fashion reportages. The aim is to enlighten editors with infashion media of these cultural differences in order to increase diversity. To pursue the purpose of the study a qualitative approach was chosen where photographs were used as the data that later on was studied through an image analysis. The study looks at six different editions of the fashion magazine Vogue, which indicates a chosen research design as multiple case studies. The six Vogue editions are: US, Japan, Paris, Arabia, India and Brazil, in which clothes, color and context have been analyzed in each editions reportages. The editions Vogue US, Vogue Japan, Vogue Paris, Vogue Arabia, Vogue India and Vogue Brazil reportages wa sanalyzed and compared, and distinct cultural differences was seen in terms of color, cultural clothing and fashion contexts. While Vogue US, Vogue Japan and Vogue Brazil had a widerange in diversity regarding models with different appearance, which were light-skinned anddark-skinned, Vogue Arabia, Vogue India and Vogue Paris had not. Vogue Arabia, Vogue India, Vogue US and Vogue Japan were however diverse in the cultural clothing, where clothes that was shown in the reportages was a mix of different cultural clothes. The researchers therefore found Vogue US and Vogue Japan the most diverse.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Producing and consuming knowledge in social work practice: research and development activities in a Swedish context2009In: Evidence & Policy: A Journal of Research, Debate and Practice, ISSN 1744-2648, E-ISSN 1744-2656, Vol. 5, no 2, p. 127-139Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to describe how experince-based knowledge can be made visible by giving some examples of how this has been done in Swedish social welfare services, in collaborations between social services agencies and research and development (R&D) units. These examples will be linked to theories and discussed in relation to different research utilisation models. By using one of these models, it is argued that R&D activities can broaden the concept of evidence-based practice and help brigde the gap between research and pracice.

Supporting user involvement in child welfare work: a way of implementing evidence-based practice2014In: Evidence & Policy: A Journal of Research, Debate and Practice, ISSN 1744-2648, E-ISSN 1744-2656, Vol. 10, no 4, p. 541-554Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The articel describes and analyses some preliminary working methods for user involvement in child welfare. The models are based on the results of a national project in Sweden where children and young peple have been involved as informants. How experiences and viewpoints from children and young people can be a source of knowledge in child welfare organisatiions is one of the main questions. The performance and the results of the project are analysed in relaton to a theoretical macro-oriented model created to illustrate the need for different kinds of knowledge in supporting the implementation of an evidence-based practice.

Det bortglömda formatet: En forskningsöversikt om serier och serieromaner i relation med läsförståelse.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Socioscientific issues as possibility in education2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden today it is relatively difficult to recruit high school students and university students to education including science topics. An explanation may be that students experience science education as objective without questions of value (Gustafsson, 2007). We can also discuss it as a response on high schools, universities and teachers traditional and non reflective way to structure and arrange education in other forms than in separated topics (Dimenäs, 2007). There has been some attempts and progress made during the last decades. Examples of this are projects were you try to integrate science and technology in society (Stringer,1992) and more recently, projects which use socioscientific issues (SSI) dealing with ethics in the context of science education (Sadler, Amirshokoohi, Kazempour & Allspaw, 2006). Current examples are genetic engineering and questions about global warming and the greenhouse effect (Hewitt 2002). This study in progress is a re-analyze of different teacher perspectives of how they understand the phenomena justice and water and a discussion of what the consequences are in relation to learning and education in general. From the presented results there is also a discussion in the use of socioscientific issues (SSI) dealing with ethics in context of science education as a new agenda for teaching and learning. Fifty eight teachers who sometimes teach about the phenomena justice (33) and water (25) participated in semi structured interviews. They represent preschool teachers (13), primary and secondary school teachers (17), high school teachers (14) and university teachers (14). The result of the study is presented from an inductive re-analyze perspective to explore emergent patterns relative to the questions how different teachers understand justice and how they understand water and justice and water in relation to teaching and learning. The study also focuses on the question if there is a relation between the two phenomena and the possible critical consequences of that for teaching and learning. Preliminary results from the study show that it is possible to identify how teachers understand the phenomena justice and water. The structure can be described in three dimensions of understanding. You can see towards the phenomena, outwards the phenomena or the phenomena in a mediated way. Spontaneously the teachers also put together and understand justice and water as an ethic problem in an unequal world. Implications of this research for science education is that it can be a dilemma for teachers to choose what and how to teach in those specific topics. Teachers did identify socioscientific issues dealing with ethics in this context of science which could be a new agenda for meaningful teaching and learning and a necessity for learning about sustainability. Skolbiblioteket: katedral eller basar eller...?: en presentation av forskningsprojektet Lärande via skolbiblioteket2001In: Barn & kultur, ISSN 0037-6477, no 4/5, p. 96-98Article in journal (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
