    Abstract [en]

The changes in Swedish education following the Bologna requirements resulted in the first Master's programmes in Library and Information Science. Two of them target information professionals working with digital resources and services and seeking to develop and update their knowledge. One programme is oriented to foreign students from all over the world, another to Swedish students. A Venn diagram illustrating the relationships among the elements of LIS was used to develop the curriculum for the international Master's programmes in Digital Libraries and Information Services. As this programme is delivered in distance learning mode there was a need to find ways of organizing the study process and deliver the study materials so that it suited this mode of education. The poster describes the content and design of the programme, as well as student reactions.

    Abstract [en]

Inequalities in access and use of information and communication technologies are usually labelled the digital divide, which implies a strong gap between those who have access and use technologies and those who do not. The public library can play a significant role in enabling a society in overcoming the divide, which is a consequence of inequalities in the distribution of wealth, and the consequent inequalities in access to the appropriate technologies and networks. This paper describes an ongoing project in Lithuania, which aims to test the possibilities of digital reading as means of overcoming the digital divide.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about how teachers in natural and social science integrate the upper secondary school library in their teaching and how they use it for their teaching. Literature in connection with the study is described. Qualitative interviews have been done with four teachers from each subject and with an upper secondary school librarian.

The study has shown that there are differences between the teachers in social and natural science. One group, consisting of mainly teachers in social science, survey the library collection. They give the pupils suggestions of useful material and sometimes they take out material for the pupils, with help from the librarian. The other group, teachers in natural science, uses library tools, cooperates and discusses with the librarian how the pupils should work when they use the library. These teachers see to it that their pupils get library skill instruction.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to learn more about children's library practices by studying preschool children during their regular school library visits. According to Cooper (2002) young children may experience problems finding books in a traditionally organized library. Focus was on how the children interacted with the library space, media, other children and adults. The theoretical framework was inspired by Vygotskij´s ideas on how children learn and Corsaro´s (2003) ideas on children´s social life. Björneborn´s (2008) model of information practices in libraries was used in theanalysis. The empirical material consists of field notes from six participant observations, conducted between September and November 2015. The study shows thatthe children searched the library for books mostly in spontaneous ways, with explorative strategies. They also devoted most of their time to social activities connected to books, like playing and reading. These activities seemed to be important to them, both in communicative activities and for developing their ability to choose books. Some children interacted less with others, sometimes because they were excluded by other children. The adult´s approaches seemed to be important for the children's practices, both for helping with strategies for finding books, but also for choosing books. The adults decided which books the children were allowed to borrow and the children seemed to accept this.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis concerns the impact of new media on thee-legal deposit in Sweden. The aim is to gain further knowledge onthe conceptions of digital media that are expressed in the textanalysed, and the impact of theese conceptions on the law ofe-legal deposit. It is commonly agreed that born-digital materialshould be comprised within legal deposit, but there seems to bedifferent views regarding the scope of what should be collectedwithin the law. The material analysed is the government bill onelectronic legal deposit from 2012 (Regeringens proposition2011/12:121). The method used is a discourse analysis inspired bythe theories of the french historian of ideas and social theoristMichel Foucault. Questions posed in this study are whichknowledge claims that can be found in the text about net producedand net distributed media content, and about the production andcirculation of this content. Another question posed is what impactthose conceptions and knowledge claims might have on theframing of the law on e-legal deposit in Sweden. The result of theanalysis is discussed in the light of the american media scholarHenry Jenkin’s theories on media convergence. The conclusion isamong other things that the statements in the text in a way shut outconceptions of a new media situation by clinging on to certaincriterias regarding what should be collected within the law one-legal deposit. Another conclusion is that it might be difficult tostick to the thought of completeness that always have been animportant idea concerning the law on legal deposit in Sweden.

Introducing Scalable Quantum Approaches in Language Representation2011Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

High-performance computational resources and distributed systems are crucial for the success of real-world language technology applications. The novel paradigm of general-purpose computing on graphics processors (GPGPU) o ers a feasible and economical alternative: it has already become a common phenomenon in scienti c computation, with many algorithms adapted to the new paradigm. However, applications in language technology do not readily adapt to this approach. Recent advances show the applicability of quantum metaphors in language representation, and many algorithms in quantum mechanics have already been adapted to GPGPU computing. SQUALAR aims to match quantum algorithms with heterogeneous computing to develop new formalisms of information representation for natural language processing in quantum environments.

Representing word semantics for IR by continuous functions2007Ingår i: Studies in Theory of Information Retrieval. Proceedings of the ICTIR07 Conference, Budapest, 18-20 October 2007 / [ed] Sándor Dominich, Ferenc Kiss, Foundation for Information Society, Budapest , 2007, s. 149-155Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Information representation is an important but neglected aspect of building text information retrieval models. In order to be efficient, the mathematical objects of a formal model, like vectors, have to reasonably reproduce language-related phenomena such as word meaning inherent in index terms. On the other hand, the classical vector space model, when it comes to the representation of word meaning, is approximative only, whereas it exactly localizes term, query and document content. It can be shown that by replacing vectors by continuous functions, information retrieval in Hilbert space yields comparable or better results. This is because according to the non-classical or continuous vector space model, content cannot be exactly localized. At the same time, the model relies on a richer representation of word meaning than the VSM can offer.

Matching Evolving Hilbert Spaces and Language for Semantic Access to Digital Libraries2010Ingår i: The Role of Digital Libraries in a Time of Global Change. Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries, ICADL 2010, Gold Coast, Australia, June 21-25, 2010. / [ed] Gobinda Chowdhury, Chris Koo, Jane Hunter, Springer , 2010, s. 262-263Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Extended by function (Hilbert) spaces, the 5S model of digital libraries (DL) [1] enables a physical interpretation of vectors and functions to keep track of the evolving semantics and usage context of the digital objects by support vector machines (SVM) for text categorization (TC). For this conceptual transition, three steps are necessary: (1) the application of the formal theory of DL to Lebesgue (function, L2) spaces; (2) considering semantic content as vectors in the physical sense (i.e. position and direction vectors) rather than as in linear algebra, thereby modelling word semantics as an evolving field underlying classifications of digital objects; (3) the replacement of vectors by functions in a new compact support basis function (CSBF) semantic kernel utilizing wavelets for TC by SVMs.

    Abstract [en]

Term selection methods typically employ a statistical measure to filter or weight terms. Term expansion for IR may also depend on statistics, or use some other, non-metric method based on a lexical resource. At the same time, a wide range of semantic similarity measures have been developed to support natural language processing tasks such as word sense disambiguation. This paper combines the two approaches and proposes an algorithm that provides a semantic order of terms based on a semantic relatedness measure. This semantic order can be exploited by term weighting and term expansion methods.

Compactly Supported Basis Functions as Support Vector Kernels for Classification2011Ingår i: IEEE Transaction on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, ISSN 0162-8828, E-ISSN 1939-3539, Vol. 33, nr 10, s. 2039-2050Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Wavelet kernels have been introduced for both support vector regression and classification. Most of these wavelet kernels do not use the inner product of the embedding space, but use wavelets in a similar fashion to radial basis function kernels. Wavelet analysis is typically carried out on data with a temporal or spatial relation between consecutive data points. We argue that it is possible to order the features of a general data set so that consecutive features are statistically related to each other, thus enabling us to interpret the vector representation of an object as a series of equally or randomly spaced observations of a hypothetical continuous signal. By approximating the signal with compactly supported basis functions and employing the inner product of the embedding L(2) space, we gain a new family of wavelet kernels. Empirical results show a clear advantage in favor of these kernels.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to study if culture influences users’ expectations of the organizing and labeling of the website navigation belonging to the KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Based on previous research, we hypothesize that users’ mental models differ depending on cultural heritage and that this in turn will affect the user experience. Using a mixed method approach, the navigation is tested from a usability perspective, focusing on the organization, hierarchy and labeling of content. Methods used are qualitative card sorting and quantitative tree testing to compare international students with Swedish students. The results show no significant differences between the two groups’ mental models. However, neither groups’ expectations correspond with the navigation structure, therefore affecting the user experience negatively.

    Abstract [en]

E-commerce has grown to be a big part of our everyday life. Previous research has found webdesign to have a great impact on trust towards e-commerce websites. Various findings indicate that consumers trust is affected by several design aspects. This bachelor thesis aims to find and describe potential correlations between web design and consumer trust within e-commerce using previous research concerning e-commerce, website design and trust as well as a theoretical framework from previous research. A qualitative method is used to gather information about consumers thoughts and opinions on how they consider web site design to affect their trust towards the web site. The study examines a group of consumers and their thoughts and opinions on whether web design has the potential to affect their trust towards the website itself and the company behind it. Findings from this bachelor thesis suggest that consumers do tend to assess a websites trustfulness by how well the webdesign is put together.

    Abstract [en]

This master's thesis aims to study the relationship between two publiclibraries and Berättarministeriet, a foundation that offers free writingworkshops for children in areas with high levels of unemployment. Theworkshops are located in spaces that formerly belonged to the libraries.Questions posed in this thesis are How can the relationship between thelibraries and Berättarministeriet be described?, Why did the relationship turnout differently in the two places? and How does the library see itself, inrelation to Berättarministeriet? The theories used are Ögland's taxonomy for relationships between librariesand local organizations, and Folkesson's theory on interaction betweendifferent professional groups, and this was studied through interviews. Theresults showed a relationship without much interaction, beyond a "handover"of children from one place to the other, with time and shortness of staff beingcontributing factors to the low level of collaboration. Regarding the differentrelationships in the two places the results were not conclusive, butnevertheless showed tendancies of issues in the legitimacy dimension, fromthe library towards Berättarministeriet. This may be due in part to a lack ofconcrete evidence of success, a high staff turnover, and not having naturalspaces in which to meet. As for the libraries' self-image, it showed aninstitution and a profession that sometimes feel overlooked. Several repliesbring up how libraries need to make themselves heard and let people knowhow important they are.

Att utvärdera i praktiken: en retrospektiv fallstudie av tre program för lokal folkbiblioteksutveckling2004Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The study is placed within the area of library and information science (LIS) known as evaluation research and in particular, the area that relates to theory of evaluation practice. An analysis of previous research reveals that there is a need for conceptualising evaluation activities in the real life of libraries and information services and to reflect further on the conditions for evaluation in various institutional contexts. The aim of this study is to identify evaluation practice in public libraries, delimited to programs for local change and development, and to create an understanding for how this practice reflects institutional conditions within this particular context. The theoretical frame combine concepts from theories of program evaluation, theories of evaluation in library and information service and institutional theory. Evaluation is here considered as an ex post, systematic study with the purpose of describing and judging the merit of the implementation and results of a given activity and intervention. In this study an interpretative approach, based on the principles of hermeneutics and phenomen-ology, is used. The empirical study follows guidelines for qualitative case study and is designed in a retrospective and comparative manner. The study includes three different programs directed towards local change in public libraries, during the period 1986-1999. The sample includes thirty-nine (39) single studies each aimed at evaluating the programs. Data were collected from interviews and program documentation and were analysed on three levels. The first level concentrated on mapping the complex network of evaluation activities and identifying participants and their role in different evaluation processes. The second level was directed towards a clarificat-ion of the activities and subjective meaning of different tasks of evaluation in the context of each single program. On the third level of analysis certain aspects of evaluation practice were compared between the cases, which led to an aggregated description of both the pattern related to single tasks as well as to a more holistic description of the basic approaches through which evaluation practice in these kinds of programs can be understood. One conclusion is that evaluation practice, even in this limited context, is experienced as a com-plex phenomenon filled with contradictions and paradoxes. The main result of this thesis is the identification of a certain pattern, here conceptualised as three strategies. Strategies are labelled participatory evaluation , rational-managerial evaluation and pragmatic-political evaluation . Some remarks are made about in what way this pattern correspond to traditional theories of practice in LIS. One conclusion is that the practice of evaluation has almost nothing in common with scientific-expert approaches, mainly, it is argued, because the basic conditions for such a model do not seem to exist. Another conclusion is that institutional rules and norms are reflected in evaluation practice in varied ways and that evaluation both produces and reproduces the legitimacy of institutional identity. Evaluation cannot and should not be seen as a neutral or technical tool. It is suggested that further research should focus more on problems related to pragmatic-political aspects of evaluation practice as well as going further in the analysis of the deeper interaction between evaluation practice and institutional change.

This paper is a report from an ongoing project directed to marketing in Public libraries. The authors outlines the aims and strategy for the marketing effort which is designed in three basic steps: First; the building of a new brand for the libraries, second; conducting a general marketing campaign and third; conducting partial campaigns directed to some selected segments of the population. The project is wide in scope and involves 25 different local libraries in the south-east of Sweden. This papers also presents three different strategies for evaluating the project, and gives a brief description of the theoretical perspecitives as well as the empirical base used in the research. The paper also discuss some of the preliminary results of the marketing campaign this far in the project, especially the results related to the second step; the general marketing campaign.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this Bachelor thesis and Minor Field Study is, from the perspective of the Vietnamese children at The General Science Library in Ho Chi Minh City, to obtain a deeper understanding of the ways in which the reading environment of The Children's Room supports children's interest in reading and their reading experience. It is assumed that reading is a dynamic and social activity made possible by internal and external conditions. In this context limited freedom of expression is one of the external conditions that is taken into consideration.

In order to obtain understanding of Vietnamese children's experiences of reading, I used Aidan Chambers' model of The Reading Circle as a theoretical framework. The methods used in this study were semi-structured interviews with Vietnamese young people at the library, four girls and five boys, aged between 10 and 15 years.

The children in this study describe two types of reading experiences: 1) reading that gives feelings of excitement and joy, and makes them want to reread a book, talk about it with others, think of it, remember and analyse it. And 2) reading they describe as developing, either spiritually or intellectually, a form of reading for improvement. Four reading environments are identified that both enable and obstruct reading experiences, their homes, school, library and the bookstore. Primarily, The Children's Room enables reading.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study is to gain knowledge about the discourse present in the written communication from the Supreme Commander (SC) of the Swedish Armed Forces (SAF) to SAF employees in situations of crisis where the employees are affected. The intention is also to clarify how power relations are expressed in the analyzed texts. The method used is critical discourse analysis (CDA). Strategic communication and crisis communication are the study’s theoretical foundations. The material consists of texts from four editorials from the SAF staff magazine Försvarets forum from December 2015 to October 2018. Because of the focus on crisis situations, two themes have been chosen in the analyzed material named ”special events” and ”internal issues”. These themes include events in which SAF employees have been attacked, injured or killed as well as occurrences of violation or harassment. The results of the study show an emphasis on equality and thus a lack of hierarchical power claims from the SC over the employees, as well as an effort to boost moral by heightening the status of the military profession. Lastly, the explicit mention of problematic occurrences like death or sexual harassment is either toned down or absent. In conclusion, the texts of the SC are very much in concordance with the strategic communication guidelines of the SAF.

    Abstract [en]

Since the opening of the first staff-less public library (meröppna biblioteket) in Sweden in 2009, the number of staff-less libraries has been growing at an increasing rate. Still, there has been little research published on this recent phenomenon in the Swedish library sector. The aim of this thesis is to fill a part of this gap by focusing on librarians employed at staff-less public libraries. The study targets their experiences with regard to changes in work content, competence requirements, and professional role. The findings are based on eight interviews conducted with ten librarians at staff-less libraries in six Swedish municipalities. The material has been analyzed using part of Wrzesniewski and Dutton’s job crafting model as the theoretical framework. In addition, Ellström’s concept of actual competence (rather than formal competence) and Ørom and Schreiber’s definition of librarians’ professional identities have been used to support analysis. The findings show that the introduction of staff-less opening hours impacts the librarians’ work content in terms of tasks, cognition, and patron interactions. This in turn makes room for librarians in staff-less libraries to develop existing or new competences. Changes in the professional role due to the introduction of the staff-less library are more difficult to identify. These changes seem to be triggered by developments in society rather than by changes at the local level.

    Abstract [en]

The essay is about small publishing houses and their position onthe Swedish book market 2002-2015. Focus is on the Internetand digitization, and the study would examine what commonconditions that exist for publishers to start publishing, as well asthe forces that affect the development of the Publishingbusiness. As the theory used Chris Anderson's long tail, whichsays that products from the narrow niches can compete with thebig sellers on the same terms. Through qualitative interviewswith publishers and a representative from Noff study shows thatsmall publishers in part, has been formed because it is cheaperand easier to print now. The study also shows that the Internethad great importance for publishers developing for example, facilitated the distribution, marketing, availability and sales. With the help of the long tail theory three forces such as thedemocratization of production tools, the democratization ofdistribution and good filter, the study shows that there is amarket for narrow and niche literature, which small publisherscan meet. Finally, it appears that publishers should be driven andhave a genuine interest in the literary publishing housepublishes.

    Abstract [en]

Sustainable development and environmental questions are currentsocial issues. Public libraries are supposed to ensure globalchanges and according to Agenda 21 every organisation aresupposed to work towards a sustainable climate.

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to discuss how the conceptsustainable development is mentioned in public library plans, andanalyze the role libraries take in terms of environmentalquestions and sustainable development. The following questionswere discussed: ”Does the concept sustainable developmentoccur in the public library plans and in that case to whatextent?” ”Which similarities and differences can be found in how the concepts of environmental issues and sustainabledevelopment are addressed in the library plans?”

A combined quantative and qualitative content analysis was made based on public library policies, using Kathryn Millersconcepts envionmental leader and environmental educator. The result shows that most of the libraries mention sustainable development as a general concept, often as a part of a municipal vision rather than that of a goal of the library. The results also shows that the public libraries that mention ecological sustainable development takes an environmental leadership role rather than aenvironmental educator role. The expressions related to the library as an environmental educator tends to be more substantial than the expressions related to the environmentalleader role. However, it is possible that these expressions of sustainable development is written in a rhetorical sense in away to try to market the library as an organization that contributes to sustainable development.

Conceptualising dimensions of bibliometric assessment: From resource allocation systems to evaluative landscapes2019Ingår i: Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics / [ed] Catalano, Giuseppe; Daraio, Cinzia; Gregori, Martina; Moed, Henk F.; Ruocco, Giancarlo;, 2019, s. 1256-1261Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the conceptualisation of bibliometric analyses in terms of the levels on which they are performed, adding contextual factors to the dimension where the size of the unit being analysed is considered. Based on empirical investigations of resource allocation systems and research evaluation practices, as well as the previous literature conceptualising bibliometric analyses, a framework based on Whitley’s (2000) notion of research fields as ‘reputational work organisations’, is discussed. The results suggest adding a contextual ‘reputational dimension’ to the size-based dimension distinguishing between micro-, meso- andmacro-level analyses. Furthermore, we propose that ‘evaluative landscapes’ (Brandter, 2017) might be a fruitful approach for further analysing how complex and multifaceted landscapes of research assessment affects the individual researcher.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how change communication can assist in transfer of training by asking the following research questions: How can theories about change communication be used to increase transfer of training in further training? How does the relation between the course Lösningsfokus i skolan (Pedagog) and current research about transfer of training look like? What kind of communication can improve transfer of training? The theoretical framework consists of theories about transfer of knowledge and three theories about change communication: change communication in child care, conversations of change and diffusion of innovation. The importance of actually talking about the change in the workplace brings all the theories together.

The study is conducted through a case study where further training for teachers constitutes the case. Data has been gathered through mapping of communication channels, observation and three qualitative interviews. The data has been interpreted through theoretic analysis.Findings in this study conclude that change communication can assist in transfer of training when the process reaches the work place by supporting managers and staff in taking the right actions – for example starting a conversation about how to implement the new knowledge and act accordingly.

The implementation of e-books into Icelandic libraries2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines whether librarians’ views on ebooks in libraries can impact the potential success of ebooks in libraries. Because of the lack of research available concerning e-books in Iceland a preliminary research was conducted to gather information on the current situation in Iceland. Following a survey was sent out to all libraries with access to Rafbókasafnið to examine their opinions and perception on e-books. Because of a small response rate, the data was observed from the perspective of a qualitative research. This study used Winston’s theory of innovation and Rogers’ diffusion of innovation to look at important factors needed for the successful diffusion of an innovation. The study found that overall it seemed that the librarians’ perception of e-books was quite positive. However, the perspective of the individuals seemed to be affected by the societal structure and societal needs within their community which seemed to have a greater effect on the individual than their characteristics did. The study also revealed that there was a clear hindrance in the diffusion process of the e-books with the lack of Icelandic e-books available. This also seemed to lead to a lack of effort from the librarians in marketing this new e-book service. Marketing did not seem to be of high priority with the librarians who preferred direct contact with patrons.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine what view librarians have on reading promotion with focus on their work with reading groups for people with print disabilities. The study is based on four semi-structured interviews with librarians. The results from the interviews were analyzed with Jofrid Karner Smidt’s theory on different kinds of reading promotion roles. The study shows that the librarians in charge of reading groups for people with print disabilities mostly used their abilities of literature and marketing, but the pedagogical and human role were also found in the results. The reading group also turned out to have, outside the theories, a clear social meaning. This reveals that it is not only the literature that is important in the reading groups for print disabled people. The conclusion shows that the librarians in the study were using the reading group not only as a reading promotion activity but also as a marketing activity and as a place for the print disabled to socialize with other people.
