Theoretical approaches to e-book research2016In: Libellarium, ISSN 1846-9213, Vol. 9, no 1, article id 277Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The adoption and continued use of innovations by societies, organisations and individuals has been a subject of research since before the 1930s. A variety of different theories have been developed to account for the different speeds at which innovations are adopted and the factors that affect the adoption process. This paper reviews theories of the adoption of innovations with particular reference to the recent phenomenon of the e-book as a cultural innovation that is having an impact on individuals, organizations and national policy makers. The paper will suggest which theories are most appropriate for the different levels at which the innovation is employed.

Overcoming the digital divide through the promotion of digital reading.2019In: Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries, QQML, ISSN 2241-1925, E-ISSN 2241-1925, ISSN 2241-1925, Vol. 7, no 2, p. 193-203Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Inequalities in access and use of information and communication technologies are usually labelled the digital divide, which implies a strong gap between those who have access and use technologies and those who do not. The public library can play a significant role in enabling a society in overcoming the divide, which is a consequence of inequalities in the distribution of wealth, and the consequent inequalities in access to the appropriate technologies and networks. This paper describes an ongoing project in Lithuania, which aims to test the possibilities of digital reading as means of overcoming the digital divide.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to learn more about children's library practices by studying preschool children during their regular school library visits. According to Cooper (2002) young children may experience problems finding books in a traditionally organized library. Focus was on how the children interacted with the library space, media, other children and adults. The theoretical framework was inspired by Vygotskij´s ideas on how children learn and Corsaro´s (2003) ideas on children´s social life. Björneborn´s (2008) model of information practices in libraries was used in theanalysis. The empirical material consists of field notes from six participant observations, conducted between September and November 2015. The study shows thatthe children searched the library for books mostly in spontaneous ways, with explorative strategies. They also devoted most of their time to social activities connected to books, like playing and reading. These activities seemed to be important to them, both in communicative activities and for developing their ability to choose books. Some children interacted less with others, sometimes because they were excluded by other children. The adult´s approaches seemed to be important for the children's practices, both for helping with strategies for finding books, but also for choosing books. The adults decided which books the children were allowed to borrow and the children seemed to accept this.

En ny mediesituation och lagen om e-plikt: en diskursanalytisk studie av regeringens proposition leveransplikt för elektroniskt material2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis concerns the impact of new media on thee-legal deposit in Sweden. The aim is to gain further knowledge onthe conceptions of digital media that are expressed in the textanalysed, and the impact of theese conceptions on the law ofe-legal deposit. It is commonly agreed that born-digital materialshould be comprised within legal deposit, but there seems to bedifferent views regarding the scope of what should be collectedwithin the law. The material analysed is the government bill onelectronic legal deposit from 2012 (Regeringens proposition2011/12:121). The method used is a discourse analysis inspired bythe theories of the french historian of ideas and social theoristMichel Foucault. Questions posed in this study are whichknowledge claims that can be found in the text about net producedand net distributed media content, and about the production andcirculation of this content. Another question posed is what impactthose conceptions and knowledge claims might have on theframing of the law on e-legal deposit in Sweden. The result of theanalysis is discussed in the light of the american media scholarHenry Jenkin’s theories on media convergence. The conclusion isamong other things that the statements in the text in a way shut outconceptions of a new media situation by clinging on to certaincriterias regarding what should be collected within the law one-legal deposit. Another conclusion is that it might be difficult tostick to the thought of completeness that always have been animportant idea concerning the law on legal deposit in Sweden.

Digitalk i klassrummet: Hur ämneslärare ser på digitalk i elevers textproduktion2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Queeranalys av svenskämnets läromedel: Genus- och queeranalys av läromedel inom svenskämnets årskurser 7-9.2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Förmågan att lösa problem: En studie om lärares arbete med problemlösning i matematik2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Inledning

I LGR 11 (rev.

Problemlösningen ges överlag stort utrymme i undervisningen men problemet kvarstår.

Ncpol2sdpa – Sparse Semidefinite Programming Relaxations for Polynomial Optimization Problems of Noncommuting Variables2015In: ACM Transactions on Mathematical Software, ISSN 0098-3500, E-ISSN 1557-7295, Vol. 41, no 3Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A hierarchy of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations approximates the global optimum of polynomial optimization problems of noncommuting variables. Generating the relaxation, however, is a computationally demanding task, and only problems of commuting variables have efficient generators. We develop an implementation for problems of noncommuting problems that creates the relaxation to be solved by SDPA -- a high-performance solver that runs in a distributed environment. We further exploit the inherent sparsity of optimization problems in quantum physics to reduce the complexity of the resulting relaxations. Constrained problems with a relaxation of order two may contain up to a hundred variables. The implementation is available in Python. The tool helps solve problems such as finding the ground state energy or testing quantum correlations.

Extended computational kernels in a massively parallel implementation of the Trotter–Suzuki approximation2015In: Computer Physics Communications, ISSN 0010-4655, E-ISSN 1879-2944, Vol. 197, p. 339-340Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We extended a parallel and distributed implementation of the Trotter-Suzuki algorithm for simulating quantum systems to study a wider range of physical problems and to make the library easier to use. The new release allows periodic boundary conditions, many-body simulations of non-interacting particles, arbitrary stationary potential functions, and imaginary time evolution to approximate the ground state energy. The new release is more resilient to the computational environment: a wider range of compiler chains and more platforms are supported. To ease development, we provide a more extensive command-line interface, an application programming interface, and wrappers from high-level languages.

Monitoring Term Drift Based on SemanticConsistency in an Evolving Vector Field2015In: Proceedings of IJCNN-15, 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Based on the Aristotelian concept of potentialityvs. actuality allowing for the study of energy and dynamics inlanguage, we propose a field approach to lexical analysis. Fallingback on the distributional hypothesis to statistically model wordmeaning, we used evolving fields as a metaphor to express timedependentchanges in a vector space model by a combinationof random indexing and evolving self-organizing maps (ESOM).To monitor semantic drifts within the observation period, anexperiment was carried out on the term space of a collection of12.8 million Amazon book reviews. For evaluation, the semanticconsistency of ESOM term clusters was compared with theirrespective neighbourhoods in WordNet, and contrasted withdistances among term vectors by random indexing. We found thatat 0.05 level of significance, the terms in the clusters showed a highlevel of semantic consistency. Tracking the drift of distributionalpatterns in the term space across time periods, we found thatconsistency decreased, but not at a statistically significant level. Our method is highly scalable, with interpretations in philosophy.

Ruling out static latent homophily in citation networks2016In: Scientometrics, ISSN 0138-9130, E-ISSN 1588-2861, Vol. 110, no 2, p. 765-777Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Citation and coauthor networks offer an insight into the dynamics of scientific progress. We can also view them as representations of a causal structure, a logical process captured in a graph. From a causal perspective, we can ask questions such as whether authors form groups primarily due to their prior shared interest, or if their favourite topics are ‘contagious’ and spread through co-authorship. Such networks have been widely studied by the artificial intelligence community, and recently a connection has been made to nonlocal correlations produced by entangled particles in quantum physics—the impact of latent hidden variables can be analyzed by the same algebraic geometric methodology that relies on a sequence of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations. Following this trail, we treat our sample coauthor network as a causal graph and, using SDP relaxations, rule out latent homophily as a manifestation of prior shared interest only, leading to the observed patternedness. By introducing algebraic geometry to citation studies, we add a new tool to existing methods for the analysis of content-related social influences.

    Abstract [en]

Somoclu is a massively parallel tool for training self-organizing maps on large data sets written in C++. It builds on OpenMP for multicore execution, and on MPI for distributing the workload across the nodes in a cluster. It is also able to boost training by using CUDA if graphics processing units are available. A sparse kernel is included, which is useful for high-dimensional but sparse data, such as the vector spaces common in text mining workflows. Python, R and MATLAB interfaces facilitate interactive use. Apart from fast execution, memory use is highly optimized, enabling training large emergent maps even on a single computer.

Quantum Enhanced Inference in Markov Logic Networks2016In: arXiv, article id 1611.08104Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Markov logic networks (MLNs) reconcile two opposing schools in machine learning and artificial intelligence: causal networks, which account for uncertainty extremely well, and first-order logic, which allows for formal deduction. An MLN is essentially a first-order logic template to generate Markov networks. Inference in MLNs is probabilistic and it is often performed by approximate methods such as Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) Gibbs sampling. An MLN has many regular, symmetric structures that can be exploited at both first-order level and in the generated Markov network. We analyze the graph structures that are produced by various lifting methods and investigate the extent to which quantum protocols can be used to speed up Gibbs sampling with state preparation and measurement schemes. We review different such approaches, discuss their advantages, theoretical limitations, and their appeal to implementations. We find that a straightforward application of a recent result yields exponential speedup compared to classical heuristics in approximate probabilistic inference, thereby demonstrating another example where advanced quantum resources can potentially prove useful in machine learning.

Risk and Ambiguity in Information Seeking: Eye Gaze Patterns Reveal Contextual Behaviour in Dealing with Uncertainty2016In: Frontiers in Psychology, ISSN 1664-1078, E-ISSN 1664-1078, Vol. 7Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Information foraging connects optimal foraging theory in ecology with how humans search for information. The theory suggests that, following an information scent, the information seeker must optimize the tradeoff between exploration by repeated steps in the search space vs. exploitation, using the resources encountered. We conjecture that this tradeoff characterizes how a user deals with uncertainty and its two aspects, risk and ambiguity in economic theory. Risk is related to the perceived quality of the actually visited patch of information, and can be reduced by exploiting and understanding the patch to a better extent. Ambiguity, on the other hand, is the opportunity cost of having higher quality patches elsewhere in the search space. The aforementioned tradeoff depends on many attributes, including traits of the user: at the two extreme ends of the spectrum, analytic and wholistic searchers employ entirely different strategies. The former type focuses on exploitation first, interspersed with bouts of exploration, whereas the latter type prefers to explore the search space first and consume later. Based on an eye-tracking study of experts’ interactions with novel search interfaces in the biomedical domain, we demonstrate that perceived risk shifts the balance between exploration and exploitation in either type of users, tilting it against vs. in favour of ambiguity minimization. Since the pattern of behaviour in information foraging is quintessentially sequential, risk and ambiguity minimization cannot happen simultaneously, leading to a fundamental limit on how good such a tradeoff can be. This in turn connects information seeking with the emergent field of quantum decision theory.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master's thesis aims to study the relationship between two publiclibraries and Berättarministeriet, a foundation that offers free writingworkshops for children in areas with high levels of unemployment. Theworkshops are located in spaces that formerly belonged to the libraries.Questions posed in this thesis are How can the relationship between thelibraries and Berättarministeriet be described?, Why did the relationship turnout differently in the two places? and How does the library see itself, inrelation to Berättarministeriet? The theories used are Ögland's taxonomy for relationships between librariesand local organizations, and Folkesson's theory on interaction betweendifferent professional groups, and this was studied through interviews. Theresults showed a relationship without much interaction, beyond a "handover"of children from one place to the other, with time and shortness of staff beingcontributing factors to the low level of collaboration. Regarding the differentrelationships in the two places the results were not conclusive, butnevertheless showed tendancies of issues in the legitimacy dimension, fromthe library towards Berättarministeriet. This may be due in part to a lack ofconcrete evidence of success, a high staff turnover, and not having naturalspaces in which to meet. As for the libraries' self-image, it showed aninstitution and a profession that sometimes feel overlooked. Several repliesbring up how libraries need to make themselves heard and let people knowhow important they are.

Undergraduates’ learning management by the usage of Social Media2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With the rapid revolution within networks as well as social media, today people face areal well-rounded and colorful high-tech world. Indeed, the technology of socialmedia changes the way that people socialize and communicate. What is more, thepotential of the social media is limitless, because we can see the combination betweenthe classroom and networks for the communication within a group chatting on acourse discussion. This is really used in our life, especially in western countries. Bycomparison, the model or pattern of learning by using social media in China is quitedifferent. This is why this paper focuses on the perspective of undergraduates’attitudes as well as behaviors when they use Hatcheck during their studying life.Hatcheck is the biggest application for socializing in China and is seen as a ChineseFacebook. How can it change Chinese students’ manners to learn and how canstudents manage their learning process self-regulatory? This will be discussed withinthis paper.

Högläsning: En intervjustudie om högläsning i förskolan2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The intention to use mobile network service: with gender as moderating factor2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to find out and analysis the factors that can influence people's choice to mobile network service. Based on our research, we can give some practical advice to consumer and telecom companies. To achieve the purpose of the study we design a questionnaire and send it to our friends in Shanghai and Jinan China. The questionnaire was built around some questions about which factors can influence people’s choice and the importance of each factor. The study was performed with a quantitative research approach. We found five factors that affect users to choose different mobile networks, respectively usefulness, ease of use, price, speed and enjoyment. And in this paper we also proposed five hypotheses to test the relationship between these factors and gender. This provides us the theoretical basis to our research. The factors were included in our questionnaire, so the questionnaire gives the research some basic data. We analyze the data through the processional software SPSS.We have analyzed every aspect of our questionnaire. We put the data together and make visual figures. The figures make people easily understand the questions. Also these data help us understand the phenomena clearly and make a contribution to our study.Based on the findings, the research could be validated with a data analysis which gave grounds for the conclusion part.

    Abstract [en]

Girls preform generally better than boys in school. In many schools the dominant norms of masculinity are a hinder for boys to preform in school. Schools with a dominating “anti school culture” or a “effortless achievement culture” among the boys are examples of this. These norms of masculinity are also a hinder for girls to show their ability in different subjects. The overall aim of the thesis is to study boy’s view on studying and it´s relation to norms of masculinity. It also focuses on the question if the ability to study is gendered. The collecting of data was done through an ethnographic inspired study where 15 group interviews and different kind of observations was used. Two classes, class 9d and 9e, in year nine in a secondary school was followed during a three-month period. Class 9d consisted of 20 pupils (13 girls and 7 boys) and 9e consisted of 19 pupils (9 girls and 10 boys). Around half of the pupils came from a working class home and the other half had parents with collar professions. Around one forth of the pupils had a history of immigration in the family In conclusion a “study culture” was dominating among the boys. The norm among both the girls and the boys was that you should study. Boys could openly study ambitious without any social cost. With a social cost I mean being teased, ridiculed or losing status in the social context. This norm was beneficial for both girls and boys at the school. The result shows that challenging a “anti school culture” or a “effortless achievement culture” is of great importance for both sexes. Despite their being at dominant “study culture” among the boys, girls on average still preform better than boys. This was because the ability to study was gendered. So even if boys were “allowed” to study as ambitious as girls without any social cost, they haven’t developed the same ability to do so because of different social expectations on girls and boys. In other words, did parallel and contradicting norms exist at the school. Some norms were “allowing” boys to study ambitious, other norms was “limiting” and a hinder for boys to do this.

Hur kan lärare motverka en antipluggkultur bland pojkar2019In: Paideia, ISSN 1904-9633, no 17, p. 15-24Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this Bachelor thesis and Minor Field Study is, from the perspective of the Vietnamese children at The General Science Library in Ho Chi Minh City, to obtain a deeper understanding of the ways in which the reading environment of The Children's Room supports children's interest in reading and their reading experience. It is assumed that reading is a dynamic and social activity made possible by internal and external conditions. In this context limited freedom of expression is one of the external conditions that is taken into consideration.

In order to obtain understanding of Vietnamese children's experiences of reading, I used Aidan Chambers' model of The Reading Circle as a theoretical framework. The methods used in this study were semi-structured interviews with Vietnamese young people at the library, four girls and five boys, aged between 10 and 15 years.

The children in this study describe two types of reading experiences: 1) reading that gives feelings of excitement and joy, and makes them want to reread a book, talk about it with others, think of it, remember and analyse it. And 2) reading they describe as developing, either spiritually or intellectually, a form of reading for improvement. Four reading environments are identified that both enable and obstruct reading experiences, their homes, school, library and the bookstore. Primarily, The Children's Room enables reading.

Att välja inskolningsmetod: en studie om förskollärares syn på inskolning2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Inledning

Exploring the effects of following different tracks of study in upper secondary education on cognitive test performance2017In: Cognitive abilities and educational outcomes: A festschrift in honour of Jan-Eric Gustafsson / [ed] Monica Rosén, Kajsa Yang Hansen & Ulrika Wolff, Cham, Switzerland.: Springer , 2017, p. 173-188Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The research presented in this chapter explores, using examples from an earlier version of the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test [the SweSAT], the possible environmental influence on cognitive test performance with respect to the effects of differences in earlier education. Relatively large differences in results between students having attended different tracks of study in upper secondary school have been noticed in the SweSAT. Obviously, this may be due to initial differences when entering these tracks. However, it may also be assumed that different tracks followed in the upper secondary schooling may influence abilities measured by the SweSAT in a different manner. The present study tentatively proposes the effects of track of study both on the observed results in a set of sub-tests and on certain ability factors previously proposed to lie behind performance on the test, after control for marks, at the end of lower secondary education.

    Abstract [en]

Explanatory pictures and models are frequently used in teaching and learning situations. However, it seems to be simply assumed that they are always beneficial. In this article results from an investigation with 16 Swedish pupils aged 7–9 year are presented based on an analysis that has examined how well this assumption holds up. Concepts from multi-modal theory have been used to investigate how young learners deal with illustrations and text from an early reader booklet about composting domestic refuse. The analysis suggests that expectations that illustrationsfacilitate the meaning-making of young pupils may be exaggerated. Although the booklet claimed to provide interactive support between image and text most of the examples show pupils ignoring pictures or misinterpreting vital information about composting in both the verbal and non-verbal material. The illustrations did not compensate for the most crucial deficiencies in the written text.

    Abstract [en]

Teaching and learning situations nowadays typically build on richly illustrated material or multimodal presentations. Under these circumstances, the transparency of images and models used for explaining various phenomena becomes central. The present study deals with 20 Swedish children, 9–12 years old, discussing an illustration meant to show the cause of the different appearances of the Moon in the sky. The students’ task was to place eight numbered moon phases in the lunar orbit in the image. The illustration in question was chosen (a) because it was of a kind frequently used to explain the lunar phases and (b) because the phenomenon is known to be difficult to understand for students of all ages. The analysis leans on historical and sociocultural approaches as well as on multimodal semiotics. The results show that a majority of students were able to make sense of the most central features of the illustration but that very few spontaneously reasoned in a way that could be interpreted as the intended meaning-making of the cause of the lunar phases. The results also indicate that the simultaneous adoption of two perspectives necessary for understanding the phenomenon was a stumbling block for most of the students.

    Abstract [en]

Many companies today are using the cloud as part of their system architecture. It has become increasingly common for businesses to move their applications to the cloud which makes it possible to access both information and applications over the internet. There are several ways to use cloud services. Businesses can acquire the necessary infrastructure and hardware required to run their applications and make it possible to reach the applications over the internet. There is also the option to rent space in data centers from a third-party provider. This is also referred to as the public cloud. Renting space in the public cloud is beneficial for many reasons as you can get access to multiple data centers worldwide at a low cost. It is also possible to take advantage of the performance of the cloud available if needed without making any investment in hardware or infrastructure. If a business would invest in the infrastructure required to run their own cloud in data centers all over the world it would be very expensive. It is a lot cheaper to rent space in a third-party provider's data center. However, this means that the business must accept the third-party provider’s terms. The information and applications that the business have in the third-party provider’s data centers will be stored together with other clients.

In this study we look at the functions of cloud services that third-party providers have to offer and what benefits it can bring for development of information systems. This study aims to follow up on businesses that have used cloud services from a third party and then have them describe what benefits they experienced from using the technology.

To conduct this study interviews have been done with people with lots of experience working with public cloud services from third-party providers. Previous research on the topic have also been studied. An analysis compiled the collected empirical data to create an overview of the relations between the technology and how it can benefit and affect the process for development of information systems. This leads to a conclusion that present how an organization's processes for developing information systems may be affected by the acquisition of public cloud services from third party suppliers. This study shows that functions in the public clouds can significantly improve the development process of information systems. It can provide functions and benefits that can reduce the time it takes to set up a test-environment and also shorten the time it takes to implement applications. It may also lead to reduced costs due to its beneficial pay-as-you-go model but may create a locked-in-effect to the third-party provider.

    Abstract [en]

The ability of expressing feelings in words or moving others with them has always been admired and rare feature. This project involves creating a text generator able to write text in the style of remarkable men and women with this ability, this gift. This has been done by training a neural network with quotes written by outstanding people such as Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, et alt. This neural network cooperate with two different semantic models: Word2Vec and One-Hot and the three of them compound our text generator. With the text generated we carried out a survey in order to collect the opinion of students about the quality of the text generated by our generator. Upon examination of the result, we proudly learned that most of the respondents thought the texts were coherent and fun to read, we also learned that the former semantic model performed, not by a factor of magnitude, better than the latter.

Focus is on the Internetand digitization, and the study would examine what commonconditions that exist for publishers to start publishing, as well asthe forces that affect the development of the Publishingbusiness. As the theory used Chris Anderson's long tail, whichsays that products from the narrow niches can compete with thebig sellers on the same terms. Through qualitative interviewswith publishers and a representative from Noff study shows thatsmall publishers in part, has been formed because it is cheaperand easier to print now. The study also shows that the Internethad great importance for publishers developing for example, facilitated the distribution, marketing, availability and sales. With the help of the long tail theory three forces such as thedemocratization of production tools, the democratization ofdistribution and good filter, the study shows that there is amarket for narrow and niche literature, which small publisherscan meet. Finally, it appears that publishers should be driven andhave a genuine interest in the literary publishing housepublishes.

    Abstract [en]

Sustainable development and environmental questions are currentsocial issues. Public libraries are supposed to ensure globalchanges and according to Agenda 21 every organisation aresupposed to work towards a sustainable climate.

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to discuss how the conceptsustainable development is mentioned in public library plans, andanalyze the role libraries take in terms of environmentalquestions and sustainable development. The following questionswere discussed: ”Does the concept sustainable developmentoccur in the public library plans and in that case to whatextent?” ”Which similarities and differences can be found in how the concepts of environmental issues and sustainabledevelopment are addressed in the library plans?”

A combined quantative and qualitative content analysis was made based on public library policies, using Kathryn Millersconcepts envionmental leader and environmental educator. The result shows that most of the libraries mention sustainable development as a general concept, often as a part of a municipal vision rather than that of a goal of the library. The results also shows that the public libraries that mention ecological sustainable development takes an environmental leadership role rather than aenvironmental educator role. The expressions related to the library as an environmental educator tends to be more substantial than the expressions related to the environmentalleader role. However, it is possible that these expressions of sustainable development is written in a rhetorical sense in away to try to market the library as an organization that contributes to sustainable development.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the conceptualisation of bibliometric analyses in terms of the levels on which they are performed, adding contextual factors to the dimension where the size of the unit being analysed is considered. Based on empirical investigations of resource allocation systems and research evaluation practices, as well as the previous literature conceptualising bibliometric analyses, a framework based on Whitley’s (2000) notion of research fields as ‘reputational work organisations’, is discussed. The results suggest adding a contextual ‘reputational dimension’ to the size-based dimension distinguishing between micro-, meso- andmacro-level analyses. Furthermore, we propose that ‘evaluative landscapes’ (Brandter, 2017) might be a fruitful approach for further analysing how complex and multifaceted landscapes of research assessment affects the individual researcher.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how change communication can assist in transfer of training by asking the following research questions: How can theories about change communication be used to increase transfer of training in further training? How does the relation between the course Lösningsfokus i skolan (Pedagog) and current research about transfer of training look like? What kind of communication can improve transfer of training? The theoretical framework consists of theories about transfer of knowledge and three theories about change communication: change communication in child care, conversations of change and diffusion of innovation. The importance of actually talking about the change in the workplace brings all the theories together.

The study is conducted through a case study where further training for teachers constitutes the case. Data has been gathered through mapping of communication channels, observation and three qualitative interviews. The data has been interpreted through theoretic analysis.Findings in this study conclude that change communication can assist in transfer of training when the process reaches the work place by supporting managers and staff in taking the right actions – for example starting a conversation about how to implement the new knowledge and act accordingly.

The study is based on four semi-structured interviews with librarians. The results from the interviews were analyzed with Jofrid Karner Smidt’s theory on different kinds of reading promotion roles. The study shows that the librarians in charge of reading groups for people with print disabilities mostly used their abilities of literature and marketing, but the pedagogical and human role were also found in the results. The reading group also turned out to have, outside the theories, a clear social meaning. This reveals that it is not only the literature that is important in the reading groups for print disabled people. The conclusion shows that the librarians in the study were using the reading group not only as a reading promotion activity but also as a marketing activity and as a place for the print disabled to socialize with other people.

Young People’s Life and Schooling in Rural Areas2019Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Roberts and Green’s understanding of the need to broaden the social justice agenda in education research to include rural areas and more plural forms of capital in them than the purely economic form has been of value in the production of this book and has encouraged an extended and deepened focus on space, place, and social justice in our investigations. The first chapter sets the scene for this by presenting the research field, and some core questions for the research project relating to the dominance of urban studies in education (and social sciences more generally) and the silence on rural conditions and problems. The chapter also presents the research project and its theory, methodology and data production to provide a coherent background and frame for the thematic chapters so they can focus on their findings and discussions.  The following empirical chapters then focus on prominent themes emerging from the fieldwork and address both rural schooling and youth’s rural lives more generally. This is in line with the chosen theoretical understanding of place as central, requiring that education, as other institutions, is analysed in its socio-spatial context.

Chapter 2 focuses on place and draws especially on youth’s presentations of the researched places. It includes sub-themes concerned with the various images of places and of strategies to maintain place relations. In this respect there are similiarities, but also differences between the different ruralities. Chapter 3  moves the analyses to the different schools and their relations to the surrounding communities. Central to this, is the presentation of the places and their relations (conflicts, values, silences) found in teaching and their relations to other places. The analyses point to some differences between ruralities in this respect, with schools in the sparsely populated areas more likely to explicitly position themselves in the rural local context, and valorise the rural positively in education exchanges, content and interaction compared to the schools in small (de)industrialised communities, with positive effects on young people’s understandings. Chapter 4 focuses on young people’s views of their future options and their dreams of further education and work in relation to the local material conditions of the rural places, such as the labour markets. Gendered and classed characteristics are found to be of particular importance in the process of shaping the young people’s ideas of future careers, both limiting and broadening their views. Chapter 5 emanates from the chosen theoretical framework of the project that emphasises place as constantly in process and reshaped. In this respect, migration poses as a special challenge and an option for sparsely populated and de-populated areas. In the researched sites, we note an influx in recent years of refugees – particularly apparent with the unforeseen inflow of refugees from Syria during the fieldwork - but also of labour migrant from Northern Europe. Taking this as a starting point, this chapter analyses issues concerned with various groups’ understandings of place and its relations.

Chapter 6 continues with a focused analysis. It  addresses themes of gender and class. It presents previous research on gender and class in relation to rural youth and education and from this, moves to present some of the main findings from our research. These indicate less stereotyped gender relations than in much previous research, but still an overall trend towards masculine activities and values.  Chapter 7 focuses on relations between rural and urban areas, their respective conditions, problems and challenges. This is a central question for the book and this chapter aims to present a synthesising discussion. It draws on previous research of urban and rural youth and their schooling, and explores the under-researched rural dimension by use of our data to discuss rural understandings and responses to socio-spatial issues. The final chapter (chapter 8) draws together central themes from the previous chapters. These are concerned with various aspects of social structures, social relations, their implications for social inclusion, and how these are addressed in school and teaching. It also returns to the initial questions posed in the first chapters about rural – urban relations, metrocentricity and marginalisation....

The precision of RSSI-fingerprinting based on connected Wi-Fi devices2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) fingerprinting is a popular technique in the fieldof indoor positioning. Many studies on the subject exist acknowledging Wi-Fi signal variationconnected to Wi-Fi signals, but does not discuss possible signal variation created byconnected devices nor consequential precision loss.Understanding more about the origins of signal variation in received signal strength indication(RSSI) fingerprinting would help deal with or prevent them as well as provide moreknowledge for applications based on such signals. Environments with a varying number ofconnected devices would benefit from knowing changes in localization precision resultingfrom the devices connecting and disconnecting from the access point because it wouldindicate whether workarounds for such circumstances would be necessary. To address this issue, the work presented here focuses on how the precision of RSSIfingerprinting vary given different levels of connected Wi-Fi devices. It was carried out byconducting real world experiments at times of low- and normal levels of connected devices toaccess points on two separate locations and evaluating precision changes between statedactivity levels. These experiments took place at the University of Borås as well as at Ericssonin Borås.Experimental findings indicate that the accuracy does deteriorate in higher levels of activitythan in low activity, even though not enough evidence to determine the precision ofdeterioration. The experiments thereby provide a foundation for location-based applicationsand services that can communicate the level of positional error that exist in differentenvironments which would make the users aware but also make the applications adaptaccordingly to different environments. Based on the precision achieved, we identify variousapplications that would benefit from our proposed model. These were applications that wouldtrack mobile resources, find immobile resources, find the movement flows of users as well asnavigation- and Wi-Fi coverage applications.Further research for investigating the exact correlation between access point stress andprecision loss is proposed to fully understand the implications connected devices have onRSSI fingerprinting.
