Preparation and Characterization of UV-cured Nano Reinforced Biobased Coatings2011Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Polymers are typically produced from crude oil which is a non-renewable resource. With the fast depletion of the petroleum resources, the development of materials based on renewable resources is becoming important. Polymers prepared from renewable resources are under development, but has mainly focused on thermoplastic polymers such as polylactic acid. For some applications, such as composites and coatings, thermoset polymers are often preferred. Consequently, it is important to develop thermoset resins from renewable resources as well. Plant oils, such as soybean oil and linseed oil, have been utilized by mankind for a long time. Soybean oil is produced in large quantities and soybean oil is an excellent starting material for the synthesis of thermoset resins. A possible strategy to prepare thermoset resins from plant oils is to introduce pendant methacrylate groups in the structure. Thus, the resins can be cured by a free radical polymerization. Such a resin is very susceptible to photopolymerization when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is a common technique to cure coatings. In the present study, three different thermoset resins were studied. Two of the resins were based on soybean oil while the third resin was based on lactic acid. The latter resin was prepared by a direct condensation of lactic acid and pentaerythritol and was finally end-capped with methacrylate groups. Several authors have studied the addition of nano-reinforcements to thermoset resins. One of the most promising nano-reinforcements is layered silicate which has shown to improve several properties. Layered silicate has been used to reinforce conventional resins with good results. The addition of layered silicates to the biobased resins can be used to improve the properties and to broaden the applications. The resins used in this study were therefore reinforced with layered silicate and UV-cured. The cured resins were characterized by Soxhlet extraction, photo-FTIR, DMTA and tensile tests which will be presented during the presentation.

Renewable composites prepared from biobased thermoset resins2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In our efforts to create a more sustainable society, several researchers have tried to prepare composites from renewable materials in recent years. The use of natural fibres for reinforcement of composites has been relatively well studied. To date, most studies of natural fibre-reinforced composites have either involved the use of conventional thermoset resins or thermoplastic biopolymers. While there are currently several thermoplastic polymers on the market that are produced from renewable resources, thermosets are inevitably produced from petroleum resources. The development of biobased thermoset resins is therefore of considerable importance. Such resins could be used in future for composite applications, for coating applications or in adhesives. This thesis describes the development of biobased thermoset resins for composite applications. Thermoset resins were synthesised from both epoxidised soybean oils as well as from lactic acid. These resins have been characterised neat as well as together with various reinforcements. The main objective has been to study these biobased resins together with natural fibres for reinforcement, though to some extent nano-reinforcements and glass fibres have also been used as reinforcements. Natural fibre-reinforced composites were prepared from several different biobased thermoset resins. Resins based on soybean oil as well as a resin based on lactic acid were evaluated. The soybean resins were prepared by introducing acrylate or methacrylate groups into the molecules of soybean oil. The second type of thermoset resin used was based on lactic acid. This resin consists of star-shaped methacrylated oligomers of lactic acid. Natural fibres were impregnated by several impregnation techniques. Composites were prepared from the biobased resins together with various natural fibres, such as flax and hemp fibres. The resulting composites were evaluated by tensile testing, flexural testing, impact testing, DMTA and SEM. The results show that composites prepared from biobased resin have relatively good mechanical properties and can be used for indoor applications such as furniture and construction elements.

    Recycling of L-Poly-(lactide)-Poly-(butylene-succinate)-flax biocomposite2016In: Polymer degradation and stability, ISSN 0141-3910, E-ISSN 1873-2321, Vol. 128, p. 77-88Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The development of new plant fibre composites is a key point in the development of semi-structural biodegradable or biobased parts, especially for automotive applications. The aim of this original and innovating work is to study, at different scales, the recycling ability of a fully biodegradable L-Poly-(lactide)-Poly-(butylene-succinate)-flax (PLLA-PBS-flax) biocomposite. The biocomposites were manufactured by twin-screw extrusion followed by injection moulding, then the recycling behaviour was studied during successive injection moulding cycles. Firstly, we investigated the length of the flax fibre after compounding and injection, as well as the cell wall stiffness and hardness, by in-situ nanoindentation tests. Secondly, we focused on the effects of recycling on thermal, rheological and tensile properties. We highlighted a severe evolution of the cell wall properties, especially concerning the polysaccharidic matrix after the first thermal cycle, nanoindentation properties remaining quasi-stable after this first drop. Furthermore, the biocomposites did not show any significant evolution of their mechanical performances during cycle three or four of the first injection cycles; after this plateau, the tensile strength and strain as well as impact energy were significantly altered due to the conjugated fibre length decrease and degradation of the PLLA, the latter being emphasized when the flax fibre is embedded. Nevertheless, this fully biodegradable composite exhibits a suitable recycling behaviour for 3 or 4 cycles, which is sufficient for industrial applications.

Products obtained from decomposition of glass fiber-reinforced composites using microwave pyrolysis2013In: Polimery, ISSN 0032-2725, Vol. 58, no 7-8, p. 582-586Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The possibility to obtain useful products from used glass fiber-reinforced composites using microwave pyrolysis were examined. A scrap of blade from a wind turbine was fragmented and microwave-pyrolysed. The oil and gas formed during the pyrolysis were characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The oil from pyrolysis consisted mainly of various aromatic compounds and had an energy content of about 36 MJ/kg. The main component of the gaseous products was methane. The glass fiber recovered after pyrolysis represented 70 % of the initial mass of glass fiber-reinforced plastic.

Microwave pyrolysis as a method of recycling glass fibre from used blades of wind turbines2012In: Journal of reinforced plastics and composites (Print), ISSN 0731-6844, E-ISSN 1530-7964, Vol. 31, no 17, p. 1136-1142Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The possibility of recycling glass fibre-reinforced composites by using microwave pyrolysis was examined. A scrap blade from a wind turbine was fragmented and microwave-pyrolysed. The glass fibre recovered after pyrolysis represented 70% of the initial mass of glass fibre-reinforced composites. The tensile strength of the glass fibre recovered was measured after pyrolysis and compared to the tensile strength of untreated glass fibre. The test showed that the fibres lost about 25% of their tenacity. Non-woven fibre mats were prepared from the recovered fibres. Laminates were then prepared from the non-woven mats obtained, together with virgin glass fibre mats. Mechanical testing of the laminates showed that it is possible to prepare composites using 25 wt% of recycled fibres, with relatively good mechanical properties.

Recycling of wood fiber-reinforced HDPE by multiple reprocessing2016In: Journal of Applied Polymer Science, ISSN 0021-8995, E-ISSN 1097-4628, Vol. 133, no 35Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The mechanical recycling of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) reinforced with wood fiber was studied by means of repeated injection moulding. The change in properties during the recycling was monitored by tensile and flexural tests, Charpy impact tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), FTIR spectroscopy, and by measuring the fiber lengths. Tests were also done where injection moulding was combined with subsequent accelerated thermo-oxidative ageing and thereafter repeated numerous times. The results showed that the HDPE composites were relatively stable toward both the ageing conditions and the repeated injection moulding. The change of the mechanical properties was mainly observed as an increased elongation at max. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016, 133, 43877. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Glass Fibres Recovered by Microwave Pyrolysis as a Reinforcement for Polypropylene2013In: Polymers & polymer composites, ISSN 0967-3911, E-ISSN 1478-2391, Vol. 21, no 6, p. 333-339Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Glass fibre composites were recycled by microwave pyrolysis. The glass fibres recovered were evaluated as a reinforcement agent for polypropylene (PP). Samples were prepared with a micro-compounder and the resulting compounds were evaluated with tensile testing, flexural testing, Charpy impact testing and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adhesion between fibre and glass was relatively poor, and an attempt was made to improve it. Various coupling agents were evaluated, in addition to the use of maleic anhydride-grafted PP (MA-PP). Tests showed that MA-PP had a relatively strong effect on the mechanical properties.

Mechanical recycling of polylactic acid reinforced with cellulose fibres2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The increased environmental awareness has drawn researchers’ attention to bio-based polymers and several polymers such as polylactic acid (PLA), Mater-bi and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) have been studied extensively. It is not easy to replace conventional petro-based polymers and it is therefore likely that both petro- and bio-based polymers will coexists for a long time. The usage of bio-based polymers is however growing and this may have implications for the plastic recycling industry. The recycling of petro-based polymers is relatively well studied and, where it is cost effective, conventional, petro-based polymers are being recycled in the industry. However, the recycling of bio-based plastics and composites needs to be studied more in detail. While several bio-based polymers can be biologically degraded, it is of interest to study the mechanical recycling of these polymers. In order to minimize the energy usage and the consumption of renewable materials mechanical recycling can be a good option. PLA is an attractive polymer as it is both biodegradable and prepared from renewable materials. This polymer has received a lot of attention and several reviews have been written. Research has shown that neat PLA can be reprocessed several times without significant loss of mechanical properties. Biocomposites based on PLA reinforced with natural fibres have been studied extensively in the literature and there can be many industrial applications of these biocomposites, such as automotive components and materials for construction applications. However, the mechanical recycling of biocomposites is not well studied. Most studies in the literature concerns the recycling of polymers reinforced with wood flour. DuraPulp is a commercial quality consisting PLA fibres mixed with cellulose fibres. This biocomposite material can be processed with for example compression moulding. Adding cellulose fibres to the polymer matrix may significantly change how the material can be recycled. The purpose of this study was to study the mechanical recycling of this material. Sheets were first prepared from Durapulp. The sheets were then compression moulded, grinded and reprocessed again with compression moulding. The mechanical and thermal properties were characterized after each cycle. The feasibility to recycle Durapulp mechanically will be discussed.

Processing of Structural Composites from Biobased Thermoset Resins and Natural Fibres by Compression Moulding2008In: Journal of Biobased Materials and Bioenergy, ISSN 1556-6560, E-ISSN 1556-6579, Vol. 3, no 3, p. 215-225Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With the aim of producing composites from renewable materials for the furniture industry, a number of thermoset prepregs were manufactured and evaluated. The applicability of two different biobased thermoset resins was evaluated. The first resin is based on soybean oil and the second on lactic acid. Both resins are cross-linkable and produced from renewable resources. Prepregs were manufactured from the two resins together with natural fibres (flax and cellulose). Furthermore, sheet moulding compound (SMC) was developed from lactic acid based resin together with glass fibre. Seat shells were produced from the prepregs by compression moulding. Curing of the composites was monitored using a response surface methodology. Further, the fibre ratio, mechanical properties as well as adhesion between the matrix and the fibre were evaluated. These prepregs offers short cycle times and yield products with suitable mechanical properties. Issues related to the preparation and the processing of the prepregs are discussed in the article.

    Abstract [en]

A new biobased polyester resin was developed for thermoset composite applications. The resin is potentially inexpensive and can be produced industrially by relatively simple means. The resin consists of star-shaped methacrylated oligomers of lactic acid (LA). LA oligomers were synthesized in a two-step process: in the first step, oligomers of LA were polymerized by direct condensation of LA. In the second step, the oligomers were end-functionalized by methacrylic anhydride. The resin was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, Raman spectroscopy, NMR, rubber process analyzer, and TOF-SIMS. Tests show that the resin can be crosslinked into a rigid network within a couple of minutes upon thermal initiation. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 115: 480-486, 2010

    Abstract [en]

Abstract Thermoset composites were produced from flax fibers and a novel lactic acid (LA)-based thermoset resin. This resin is based on methacrylated, star-shaped oligomers of LA. The main purpose of this work was to evaluate whether this resin can be used to produce structural composites from flax fibers. Composites were prepared by spray impregnation followed by compression molding at elevated temperature. The tests showed that composites can be produced with as much as 70 wt% fiber. The composites were evaluated by tensile testing, flexural testing, charpy impact test, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy. The ageing properties in high humid conditions were evaluated, the Young's modulus ranged from 3 GPa to 9 GPa in the best case. This work shows that structural composites can be produced from renewable material. It is clear from the results that these composites have properties that make them suitable for furniture, panels, or automotive parts.

Biobased thermoset resins were irradiated with utraviolet(UV) radiation in the presence of photoinitiators. Three different resins were evaluated-two resins were based on soybean oil and one was based on lactic acid. The cross-linking behaviour of these resins was characterized by real-time FTIR and Soxhlet extraction. All of the resins cured rapidly and formed rigid materials with a high degree of conversion. The cross-linked resins were characterized by mechanical testing, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) as well as dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The resins were reinforced with layered silicate, in order to form nanocomposite Structures. The resulting composites were characterized by DMTA and tensile testing. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abstract [en]

Structural composites with a high content of renewable material were produced from natural fibres and an acrylated epoxidized soybean oil resin. Composites were prepared by spray impregnation followed by compression moulding at elevated temperature. The resulting composites good mechanical properties in terms of tensile strength flexural strength. Tensile testing as well as dynamical :hanical thermal analysis showed that increasing the e content, increased the mechanical properties. The resin be reinforced with up to 70 wt % fibre without sacrifice in processability. The tensile modulus ranged between 5.8 and 9.7 GPa depending on the type of fibre mat. The study of the adhesion by low vacuum scanning electron microscopy shows that the fibres are well impregnated in the matrix. The aging properties were finally evaluated. This study shows that composites with a very high content of renewable constituents can be produced from soy bean oil resins and natural fibres.

    Abstract [en]

Composites consisting of 30 vol% PLA and 70 vol% cellulose fibres were prepared with compression moulding. In the first part of the study, the recyclability of this composite material was investigated by grinding the material and using the recyclate obtained as a filler for PLA. Thus, the recyclate was compounded with PLA in loadings ranging from 20 to 50 wt%. The composites obtained were characterised by tensile tests, Charpy impact tests, DMTA, and SEM. Tests showed that the recyclate had a relatively good reinforcing effect. Stress at break increased from about 50 to 77 MPa and the modulus increased from 3.6 to 8.5 GPa. In the second part of the study, the ability to mechanically recycle the composites obtained was evaluated by repeated processing. Composite with two loadings of the recyclate (20 wt% and 50 %) was injection moulded repeatedly, six times. Tests showed that the composite material with 20 wt% recyclate could withstand six cycles relatively well, while the composite with the higher load degraded much more quickly. For the composites with 50 wt% recyclate, signs of polymer degradation could be seen already after reprocessing the composite once.

Nyhetssöktjänster på webben: En utvärdering av News Index, Excite News Search och Ananova2001Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the retrieval performance of three search engines, specialized in retrieving news articles: News Index, Excite News Search and Ananova. Thirty questions, grouped into three categories – politics, economy and sports, were used and the first twenty documents for each question were examined. The questions used were designed to be as current as possible and efforts were made to perform the searches with as little time span as possible between each search engine. The precision of the search engines was determined for each of the questions as well as for each category and for the combined categories. In measuring precision an average was calculated, intended to favour search engines that place its relevant documents early in the ranked list. The relevance of the retrieved documents was evaluated using a three-grade scale. Irrelevant articles and duplicates were given 0 points, partially relevant documents were given 0,5 points and those judged to be highly relevant were given 1 point. The results of the study show surprisingly high precision from two of the search engines, Excite and News Index with the former performing slightly better than the latter. Ananova performed considerably worse than the other two. One possible reason for the high precision observed is the relatively low complexity of the documents retrieved compared to web pages in general. When comparing the different categories of questions one notable result was that all search engines performed considerably worse in the "economy"-category. Possible reasons for this are, apart from a higher number of duplicates, a shortage of relevant articles for the questions in this category as well as possible differences between either the documents retrieved in the different categories, or the web pages publishing them.

Katalogisering och presentation av film på bibliotek2003Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to discuss selected parts of cataloguing both from a practical and a theoretical viewpoint. It presents the basic grounds for cataloguing of printed as well as non-printed materials. The focus lies on the main entry heading and its author/title problem concerning film. The thesis theoretical part consists of an analysis of central documents dealing with the author concept from both a library- and information science perspective and a film science perspective. The practical part consists of interviews from two Swedish public libraries, which have different approaches on presenting films. Theories which have been used are taken from general library- and information science theorists such as Charles Cutter and Ross Harvey as well as cataloguing experts within the library- and information field and film theorists within the film science field. The Study shows that the differences between cataloguing of non-printed materials and printed materials are relatively small except for the main heading. Theorists within the two academic fields are ambivalent whether one can claim the director to be the main author for a film and therefore, its recommended to follow the common praxis of cataloguing and presenting films on their title.

Passage Retrieval: en litteraturstudie av ett forskningsområde inom information retrieval2000Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to describe passage retrieval (PR), with basis in results from various empirical experiments, and to critically investigate different approaches in PR. The main questions to be answered in the thesis are: (1) What characterizes PR? (2) What approaches have been proposed? (3) How well do the approaches work in experimental information retrieval (IR)? PR is a research topic in information retrieval, which instead of retrieving the fulltext of documents, that can lead to information overload for the user, tries to retrieve the most relevant passages in the documents. This technique was investigated studying a number of central articles in the research field. PR can be divided into three different types of approaches based on the segmentation of the documents. First, you can divide the text considering the semantics and where the topics change. Second, you can divide the text based on the explicit structure of the documents, with help from e.g. a markup language like SGML. And third, you can do a form of PR, where you divide the text in parts containing a fixed number of words. This method is called unmotivated segmentation. The study showed that an unmotivated segmentation resulted in the best retrieval effectiveness even though the results are difficult to compare because of different kinds of evaluation methods and different types of test collections. A combination between full text retrieval and PR also showed improved results.

    Abstract [en]

The essay is about small publishing houses and their position onthe Swedish book market 2002-2015. Focus is on the Internetand digitization, and the study would examine what commonconditions that exist for publishers to start publishing, as well asthe forces that affect the development of the Publishingbusiness. As the theory used Chris Anderson's long tail, whichsays that products from the narrow niches can compete with thebig sellers on the same terms. Through qualitative interviewswith publishers and a representative from Noff study shows thatsmall publishers in part, has been formed because it is cheaperand easier to print now. The study also shows that the Internethad great importance for publishers developing for example, facilitated the distribution, marketing, availability and sales. With the help of the long tail theory three forces such as thedemocratization of production tools, the democratization ofdistribution and good filter, the study shows that there is amarket for narrow and niche literature, which small publisherscan meet. Finally, it appears that publishers should be driven andhave a genuine interest in the literary publishing housepublishes.

    Abstract [en]

Usability studies are not a central field of research in library and information science. Although literature in library and information science treats the importance of usable user interfaces quite extensively, the literature does not significantly treat potential problems in measuring usability. The aim of this master thesis is to investigate, through a critical analysis, the methods used when conducting usability studies in library and information science. The critical analysis is based on potential problems in measuring usability identified through a literature review from the field of studies Human-Computer Interaction, the concept of usabilitys original domain. The material which is to be analysed, is chosen from one library and information science journal Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. The results of the analysis showed that almost all studies used several usability methods. The most frequently used methods were question-based methods through questionnaires and usability tests through tasks, data logging and measured time. All studies were based on sufficient number of users. Objections were raised against the methods used in some of the studies. The objections were based on, e.g. that the users were not representative for the end-users of the system, insufficient control of the quality of performed tasks, that the question-based method was used as an objective measure, that time was measured in minutes, not measuring all aspects of usability and the validity of the conclusions in several of the studies was questioned.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this Master’s thesis is to examine how public librarians, including school librarians, express themselves about librarians in library journals. Questions asked in the study are: How is the knowledge, tasks and roles of librarians described? How do the librarians describe their own and others perceptions of librarians? Are there any contradictions in how the librarian profession is described and if so, what are they? 56 articles from three Swedish library journals, Biblioteksbladet, bis and DIK-forum in the period from 1990 to 2007, are analysed. The theory and method used is discourse analysis. Concepts from Ernesto Laclau’s and Chantal Mouffe’s discourse theory, such as elements and nodal points are used in an analysis model in four steps. The results show that the knowledge of librarians is described with such words as information, literature, tacit knowledge and their ability to systematize and organize. Tasks and roles described are mostly related to the pedagogical aspects of the librarian profession, such as teaching, conveying and guiding. Two positions are distinguishable in the discourse, information and culture. Both are important parts of librarians’ work, but the information tasks are sometimes seen as too dominating at the expense of the cultural aspects of the librarians’ work. The contradiction can also be seen in how perceptions about librarians are described. The librarians express, often in a negative tone, that others mostly associate them with books. They also express that they need to be more visible and become better at communicating the knowledge of their profession.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the information need of the incubators that comes from Chalmers University of Technology and are situated at Chalmers Innovation. It is also of interest to investigate how Chalmers University Library covers this information need. The investigation was carried out using qualitative interviews with representatives of the incubators. They were asked questions about the perceived need of information and which type of contacts they had with the library. The result is that the incubators feel that there is a great need for business information that is hard to find. Most companies try to fulfil this need by searching the Internet via ordinary search engines or searching in databases at the library. Since almost all of the investigated companies emanate from Chalmers University of Technology, they did not find it as a problem to keep them updated on technical issues. The majority of the companies used Internet and personal contacts to keep them updated on technical issues. For basic technical information, such as needed for entering a new field, they often used the University library. None of the investigated companies was aware of the possibility to give search questions to the library. They have not got any information of what services the library could provide. This is a question that I feel need to be addressed. It should be possible to improve the co-operation between the incubators and the library for the benefit of both parties.

    Abstract [sv]

Vidare bokades intervjuer in, tio intervjuer genomfördes.

    Abstract [en]

Sustainable development and environmental questions are currentsocial issues. Public libraries are supposed to ensure globalchanges and according to Agenda 21 every organisation aresupposed to work towards a sustainable climate.

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to discuss how the conceptsustainable development is mentioned in public library plans, andanalyze the role libraries take in terms of environmentalquestions and sustainable development. The following questionswere discussed: ”Does the concept sustainable developmentoccur in the public library plans and in that case to whatextent?” ”Which similarities and differences can be found in how the concepts of environmental issues and sustainabledevelopment are addressed in the library plans?”

A combined quantative and qualitative content analysis was made based on public library policies, using Kathryn Millersconcepts envionmental leader and environmental educator. The result shows that most of the libraries mention sustainable development as a general concept, often as a part of a municipal vision rather than that of a goal of the library. The results also shows that the public libraries that mention ecological sustainable development takes an environmental leadership role rather than aenvironmental educator role. The expressions related to the library as an environmental educator tends to be more substantial than the expressions related to the environmentalleader role. However, it is possible that these expressions of sustainable development is written in a rhetorical sense in away to try to market the library as an organization that contributes to sustainable development.

Lokal kulturpolitik på 2000-talet? En ideologianalys av fem kommunala kulturpolitiska visionsdokument.2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Master’s thesis explores and describes the beliefs, values and norms in a selection of five Swedish municipal cultural policy documents approved 2005-2007. The comprehensive question is: Which ideological traits characterize cultural policy in the chosen municipalities as communicated in their respective cultural policy vision document? The method used is ideology analysis. Ideal types based on a model by Dorte Skot-Hansen are used as a conceptual framework, illustrating three different rationalities in relation to cultural policy: the humanistic, the sociological and the market oriented. The analysis shows that the policy documents are based on different conceptions of culture. Concepts with a marked presence in the material as a whole are availability, participation, prioritization of children and youth and culture as a means for social development and economic growth. In terms of rationality the market oriented and the sociological rationalities are strong, whereas the humanistic rationality is relatively weaker. However, the results are not unambiguous. One conclusion drawn is that the municipal policy documents display a relatively high degree of independence towards the Swedish national cultural policy goals from 1996. Another conclusion is that in the midst of the 21st century it has been possible for the municipalities to choose different paths for the cultural policy on the local level.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences and perceptions of children`s librarians regarding floating collections in public libraries in Gothenburg. In focus for the study are the experiences and perceptions that exist among children`s librarians when it comes to children as library users, the librarian`s working tasks and the professional role as a librarian. The empirical material has been collected through semistructured interviews with six children`s librarians. The material has been analyzed twice. The first analysis has been conducted through qualitative content analysis. The second analysis has been conducted by using a tool constructed with inspiration from Maj Klasson`s and Anders Ørom`s theories of the professional roles and identities of a librarian. One major finding is that the informants percept children as different from grown-ups in their role as library users. The way children are makes it difficult for them to get their needs satisfied in a library system that practices floating collections. On the other hand the perception that children can learn what it takes to be able to act functionally within floating collections also exists among the interviewed librarians. Another finding is that literature mediation and collection development are working tasks that are influenced by floating collections. The study also indicates that the librarian role as a literature mediator and the role as a librarian that puts the user first are threatened as the marketing role and the role as a mediator of technical knowledge dominate when floating collection is practiced as a media strategy.

The objective of this entire essay, founded on nineteen interviews of poetry readers at the public library in Borås, is to ascertain why people do read poetry. But in addition to examine what sort of people who enjoy poetry, as well as what they appear to get out of their exercise. I have also put together the position of the poetry reader as a customer of the library. The summary of contents is primarily based on direct quotations of the interviews, and does not reflect any generally applicable facts about poetry readers. I am only trying to focus on the thoughts and sentiments on poetry experienced by a few randomly selected individuals. Dan Andersson, Karin Boye, Nils Ferlin and Gustaf Fröding were stated as favourites by many. The only thing in common subsequently found by those interviewed was a great affection for literature and a diligent usage of the library.

    Abstract [en]

It is said that libraries are the cornerstones of democracy. What is then the democratic mandate, and how is it perceived by the library staff? That's what I examine in this master's thesis. I’ve made 14 phone interviews with library staff, from assistants to managers, and examined what their daily work routine looks like and what they think belongs to the democratic mandate. I found that all agree that there is a democratic mandate, but it is not clearly stated in any document. I found seven areas that my respondents saw as part of the mandate; availability, diversity, children and young people, equality, public education, free of law and cultural history. These are not sharply defined, but can often move into one another. The everyday work of the library is more of a social work than you might think. The digital divide means that the library staff will largely be helping with things like ordering stuff over the Internet, get email accounts, helping people to learn social media, helping immigrants and refugees to learn how Swedish society works and so on. The problems experienced with the democratic mandate were mainly economic. Downsizing means that the staff does not have time and opportunity to help as much as they want. The fact that the democratic mandate is not so clearly stated was also experienced as a problem. A clearly defined mandate would not only draw guidelines for labor, but also show outward a little better what you actually do at the libraries, more than lend books.

    Abstract [en]

The principal aim of this thesis is to test if extracts, produced by the automatic summarizer "Copernic Summarizer", are possible to use as abstracts. The aim is also to give a picture of what automatic summarization is and why it is motivated. Three questions are asked: What is automatic summarization and what can it be used for? Is it possible to replace the author-written abstracts with extracts from "Copernic Summarizer"? Is automatic summarization motivated for the different areas of use that are identified in the first question? An automatic summarizer is a program that is intended to summarize text automatically and it can be used for different purposes, for example for summarizing WebPages or scientific articles. To answer the second question an experiment is carried out. Five empirical articles are summarized with "Copernic Summarizer" and a qualitative method is used which is intended to evaluate the content and readability of the extracts. The content of the extracts is compared against the author-written abstracts. The results show that two of five extracts could replace the abstracts, though one of the acceptable extracts was a borderline case. The conclusion is that in most of the cases you can not replace abstracts with extracts from "Copernic Summarizer", even though the result sometimes is acceptable. The last question is discussed and the author suggests that automatic summarization might be more useful on the Internet than for producing abstracts from scientific articles.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how change communication can assist in transfer of training by asking the following research questions: How can theories about change communication be used to increase transfer of training in further training? How does the relation between the course Lösningsfokus i skolan (Pedagog) and current research about transfer of training look like? What kind of communication can improve transfer of training? The theoretical framework consists of theories about transfer of knowledge and three theories about change communication: change communication in child care, conversations of change and diffusion of innovation. The importance of actually talking about the change in the workplace brings all the theories together.

The study is conducted through a case study where further training for teachers constitutes the case. Data has been gathered through mapping of communication channels, observation and three qualitative interviews. The data has been interpreted through theoretic analysis.Findings in this study conclude that change communication can assist in transfer of training when the process reaches the work place by supporting managers and staff in taking the right actions – for example starting a conversation about how to implement the new knowledge and act accordingly.

An Analysis on Developing a Common CSR Labeling System in the Fashion Industry2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The negative impact of the fashion industry on both society and environment cannot be ignored, especially in recent years, due to news and reports on the negative impacts of the industry has raised awareness among consumers. Some of the consumers started questioning the fashion companies’ operations and demand for more sustainable supply chains. In order to respond the request coming from consumers’ side, the companies started to regulate their operations and communicate about them. Even though there are many different ways to communicate about sustainability approach, This study is questioning the potential outcomes of developing a common CSR label based on Higg Index 2.0 tool. To answer the research question, existing literature has analyzed from three different perspectives; social and environmental problems led by the industry and raising consumer awareness about negative impact of the industry. After the literature review, CSR communication approaches of the selected companies were analyzed. The second step of the research was, to apply a consumer survey in the Gothenburg Central Station to understand Swedish consumers’ perception. Outcomes of the consumer survey has compared with the existing literature and communication strategies followed by the analyses of selected companies. The company analyzes show that, even though, they are good at about regulating their supply chain with more sustainable approaches, the majority of fashion companies do not communicate about their CSR practices. Consumer survey expose that, consumers are lack of awareness regarding to existed CSR labels. Moreover, even though exist labels focus on only environmental factors or social factors, the consumers expect from labels to cover both areas. The data collected from the study expose that, even the majority of the consumer not completely influenced by the sustainability approach of the companies, there are consumers that influence by the companies CSR approach. Moreover, the lion share of consumers believes that a common labeling system based on Higg Index 2.0 will be helpful guide when they give their purchasing decision. Based on the findings from existed literature -consumer survey and analyze of companiesapproach-, it was observed that companies are lack of effective communication strategies which is a barrier for the consumers to get an action for to purchase more sustainable fashion products. Therefore, developing a common CSR labeling system that will controlled by third party institution such as Sustainable Apparel Coalition will increase the effectiveness of CSR label and influence the consumers response positively.

The implementation of e-books into Icelandic libraries2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines whether librarians’ views on ebooks in libraries can impact the potential success of ebooks in libraries. Because of the lack of research available concerning e-books in Iceland a preliminary research was conducted to gather information on the current situation in Iceland. Following a survey was sent out to all libraries with access to Rafbókasafnið to examine their opinions and perception on e-books. Because of a small response rate, the data was observed from the perspective of a qualitative research. This study used Winston’s theory of innovation and Rogers’ diffusion of innovation to look at important factors needed for the successful diffusion of an innovation. The study found that overall it seemed that the librarians’ perception of e-books was quite positive. However, the perspective of the individuals seemed to be affected by the societal structure and societal needs within their community which seemed to have a greater effect on the individual than their characteristics did. The study also revealed that there was a clear hindrance in the diffusion process of the e-books with the lack of Icelandic e-books available. This also seemed to lead to a lack of effort from the librarians in marketing this new e-book service. Marketing did not seem to be of high priority with the librarians who preferred direct contact with patrons.

Komponentansatsen: i nationell och internationell redovisning2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

En kvalitativ studie av Kuhlthaus informationssökningsprocess bland uppsatsskrivande högskolestudenter.2000Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this thesis is to examine whether the ISP (the Information Search Process) as defined by Carol Kuhlthau is applicable to Swedish University students. Qualitative interviews were carried out with students enrolled in their thesis course at the end of their university education. The selection is based on convenience sample of students visiting the university library. The questions are mainly about how to find out the experiences of the students when they look for documents at the beginning of their thesis work. Other relevant questions are about user-education, information literacy and what the students' opinions are concerning a thesis as a part of their education. The result of the study is presented in two parts. The first in relation to Kuhlthau's ISP and the second part to other relevant questions. The ISP can be identified with small deviations from the way Kuhlthau defines it. The other part of the result tells us that the information literacy among our students is not what we would like it to be.

    Abstract [sv]

Budget och/eller Rullande prognoser?2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Mäta och väga2009Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Observation pågår!2011Conference paper (Other academic)
