Open access to university music: the challenge of YouTube and Ning2008Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

I think you recognize the feeling when you sit on a sofa reading something pleasant in deep comfortable thoughts. It is a summer evening . Windows are open and the front door is ajar when there is a crash as the crosswinds blow the front door wide open and a gush of wind fills the room. Suddenly you are wide awake and your eyes are owl-like wide open. This is what comes to my mind when I try to describe the impact of new technology – such as open access and web 2.0 – in my life as a music and arts librarian. Sudden, so far unknown possibilities open and give me a feeling of anticipation and awe. I will try to convey some of the observations I have made since in this short paper and I will do it in a somewhat shorthand form, trying to transmit my feeling of being a wide open pair of eyes in a strange somewhat disorganized world.

    Abstract [en]

The Sami mobile libraries in Norway hold a unique position as both indigenous libraries and conveyors of minority culture. This thesis aims to identify the professional identities found in these mobile libraries. The way to reach this goal will be through a systematic analysis of public documents and interviews with two decision makers employed at mobile libraries. The collected documents and interview transcriptions have been subjected to a directed qualitative content analysis based on the professional identities defined by Anders Ørom and Trine Schreiber. The additional goal is to uncover which, if any, unique identities exist in Sami mobile libraries. A main finding in this thesis was that of a new professional identity; the culture and language curator. This identity is connected to tasks concerning the preservation, revitalisation and highlighting of the Sami language and culture. This identity is also applicable for librarians working with other indigenous or minority languages around the world.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis aims to examine the library plans of the HelGe-libraries to find what is revealed about library services for the youngest children (0-3 years). I have made a content analysis to compare previous research on the subject with my findings in the plans. I have also made an analysis of other external directional documents that the libraries might use for inspiration in their services. In the background is the fact that public libraries in Sweden are governed by municipal self-government. Some of the comprehensive questions in this thesis are: What do the plans reveal about eventual services for babies and toddlers? What external directional documents can be found and how are they followed? How are libraries affected in this area by the municipal self-government? The previous research I have studied has to do with the approach libraries have on children, how libraries think about participation for the youngest and which perspective of children libraries use in their activities. Is it the child´s perspective or a child perspective? In the background is the UN´s Convention on the Rights of the Child. I have also studied research about the childrens librarians identity. My theoretical framework is neo-instirutional theory, with a hint of Scandinavian institutional theory. My findings shows that very few library plans actually mention childrens activities. It is also revealed that this kind of activities for the youngest at the libraries is not as common as I hoped it would be, sometimes due to the local political priorities.

Gilla, tagga, kommentera!: En kvalitativ studie av social interaktion och relationsskapande i tre statliga museers Instagram-konton2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This essay examines how three public, Swedish museums use Instagram as a tool for encouraging social interaction and for the building of relationship with the audience. The three examined museums are Livrustkammaren, Världskulturmuseet and Moderna Museet Malmö. By using the method netnography the study has collected posts and comments from the three museums during a limited period of time (2 months). The results present both differences and similarities between the three museums’ use of Instagram. All of the museums have some degree of interaction with users on Instagram, but Livrustkammaren stands out as a museum with more interaction than the others. With the help of Erving Goffman’s theories about social interaction, Anders Persson’s interpretation of these and theories about online relationship strategies presented by Kelleher/Millerand Smith, the essay provides insight into how museums can use Instagram as a communicative tool if the museums want to increase the social interaction and improve and maintain the relationship with the audience. According to the results of this study, some of the more successful strategies are: using humour as a way of connecting with the audience and using a ”conversational human voice”, i.e. a more personal voice. The essay opens up for further studies of how museums can work with Instagram as a tool for communicating with the audience.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine the different discourses related to freedom of expression linked to collec-tion development that can be identified in and around the public library field. Questions posed in this study are: What discourses can be found and how do they interact? How is the public library’s mission described in relation to freedom of expression and collection development within each dis-course? Which subject positions are visible in the debate? The theoretical starting-point is Ernesto Laclau’s and Chantal Mouffe’s discourse theory. The used method is discourse an-alytic, but since Laclau and Mouffe provide no explicit step by step method how to use their theory, we have had to find inspiration in other discourse analytic papers. 38 articles from library journals and daily newspapers were analyzed. The re-sult of the analysis reveals three discourses: a libertarian dis-course, a profession-centred discourse and a reflexive dis-course. From a professional point of view selection, based on professional considerations, is a necessity since no public li-brary is able to stock everything. From a libertarian perspec-tive, the public library’s mission is to serve the public with-out any censorship filters. The main position in the reflexive discourse is that freedom of expression is negotiated in dia-logue with vulnerable groups to ensure a public library for all. Based on the result of the analysis we draw the conclu-sion that the interpretations of laws and guidelines differ within the public library discourse. We therefore propose a clearer national coordination on collection development strat-egies.

Shaman: D14.2 - report on demonstration and evaluation activity in the domain of "memory institututions"2011Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

    1. The report describes the demonstration and evaluation of ISP1, which was designed to demonstrate the potential of the SHAMAN framework for digital preservation in the context of memory institutions and for the research and development community. 2. The demonstration process was carried out by means of presentations based on screen-casts in three locations, Frankfurt, Vilnius and Glasgow. The audiences for the demonstrations consisted persons occupying of a wide range of roles in memory institutions, including senior management, operational level staff and IT support staff. 3. The evaluation is based on the reports of focus groups held in the three locations, together with structured data from self-completed questionnaires, administered on the same occasions. 4. Participants in the focus groups responded favourably to the ideas demonstrated in the presentations. There was particular interest in the choice of mainly open source software and in automation of processes, both of which have cost reduction implications, and in the idea of a digital preservation policy: the majority of participating organizations had no such policy. Participants also drew attention to aspects of preservation which they found lacking in the presentation and which were desirable, specifically: the preservation of font information; working with already obsolete formats; the automatic extraction of necessary metadata; the fact of mixed media archives involving, e.g., film and audio files; support for controlled vocabularies for search and discovery; and demonstration of workflows at a more practical level. 5. The questionnaire results revealed most approval of the retrieval and verification capabilities and less for the ingest processes. Otherwise the results supported the findings from the focus groups in general. There was a division of opinion over the value of the Multivalent browser and the application of grid technology, possibly because of differences in knowledge of these matters. Highest priority was assigned to data migration, access and authentication and bit stream preservation and least to independence standards and search capacity – issues that may be worth further exploration. 6. Evaluation has also been performed to determine the project‟s impact on the R&D community by means of submission and rejection rates of papers to journals and conferences, and bibliometric and Webometric analyses. The results demonstrate that the research outputs from the project are of interest to the R&D community and that the impact of the project as a whole compares favourably with other European projects in the digital preservation area. 7. The evaluation has revealed strengths and shortcomings in the demonstration process, which will influence the development of demonstrators for ISP2 and ISP3. The SHAMAN framework for digital preservation is seen as offering new possibilities and rigorous methods for the field by the practitioners in memory institutions.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine to what extent, and how, multilingual information is made accessible on the websites of Swedish municipal libraries. In particular, wefocused on assessing access to foreign languages on the websites, and on identifying the criteria used when choosing these languages. The thesis also aimed to outline which problems, if any, that arise when providing multilingual information on these websites. The analysis was based on theories concerning websites and multilingualism. We analysed the responses to the survey through the concepts of assimilation and diversity. The method used was aquantitative web-based survey addressed to webmasters at 43 Swedish public libraries, in municipalities with a high percentage of foreign-born citizens. The study indicates that economic resources, time, the websites’ design and the lack of language skills among library staff limit the development of multilingual websites. The findings show that a majority of the libraries only to a certain extent map their targetaudience. The webmasters base their work on the principle of every citizen’s equal right to participation. The main finding is that the websites are generally not accessible to non-Swedish speakers, including speakers of the national minority languages. This contradicts the principle of everybody’s equal right of access to public libraries and the information they provide.

    Abstract [en]

This essay takes its empirical starting point in the cultural and library policy debate that took place right before the governmental election in Sweden, September 2006. The concern of the essay is two-folded. At first, we want to show how the appropriation of certain ideological and political concepts, in times of election, tends to organize the multiplicity of rationalities and subjects into binary relations. Such binary relation is often in Swedish cultural political climate defined as social-conservative versus neoliberal or conservative. As for the social-conservative formation, we connect the uses of concepts to an immanent idea of a national subject and historical coherence; whereas for the political right we connect the use of concepts to a wider neo-liberal turn in the Swedish political language. Secondly, in a political-philosophical reflection, we will argue that the contemporary decline of cultural policy discourse on the level of governmentality is not at all adequate. Rather, we observe tendencies that points to a more complex, web like, cultural policy that have taken it’s turn into other institutional positions, from where it can continue following a somewhat social-conservative agenda. However, we are convinced that the cultural policy debate, if it wants to remain vital, needs to discuss it’s meta-political, conceptual and form related issues, rather than keep dwelling on factual matters.

How reproductive is a reproduction?: Digital transmission of text-based documents2015Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Heritage institutions today increasingly rely on digital formats for access, use and re-useof their collections. Books and other text-based documents, previously accessed on locationin libraries are now transferred into digital format and managed, distributed, andengaged as binary encoded representations.

The thesis addresses the relation between the source document and its reproduction, asconditioned by the digitisation process. This process can be described as based on twosequences of conversion; from analogue to digital format during the procedure of capture, and back to analogue as the digital resource is represented. In a study of the digitisationprocess it might therefore be tempting to place a focus on the technical aspects. However, the thesis demonstrates that underpinning the digitisation process we find assumptionsand ideals concerning the actual defining features of documents and also of their capacityto be informative. An analysis of the digitisation process, has consequently to considerboth the technical parameters in place during the conversion as well as the theoreticalassumptions that have guided its design and operation.

Based on two empirical studies – an analysis of the components in the digitisation processand an interview study with researchers who rely on digital resources – this thesisseeks to outline a conceptual framework that structures the relation between the sourcedocument and its reproduction, as conditioned by the digitisation process. Boundary objecttheory provides a theoretical underpinning and is supported by two concepts thatare developed in the critical analysis of document and information theory: modes of representation(referring to the ways in which the source document is represented as a digitalresource) and informative configuration (referring to the ways in which the users engagewith the digital resource, given a specific interest).

The thesis contributes to the theoretical development within the fields in Library & InformationScience that are concerned with document and information theory, but also inareas such as knowledge organisation and the application of digital technology within theheritage sector at large. The thesis also indicates some of the possibilities and limitationsof boundary object theory as applied to the study of documents in digitisation processes.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Young LGBT people rather search for LGBT books in library catalogues privately than ask a librarian for help. But words that describe different sexualities and gender identities change rapidly, and controlled vocabularies do not, which make it difficult for members of the LGBT community to find what they are looking for when using more modern and informal terminology. We wanted to know the difference in how users in a folksonomy and librarians restricted by a controlled vocabulary describe the content of young adult LGBT literature. Who are most suitable to describe this literature? To do this we did a small comparative study using 50 randomly selected LGBT books, focusing on the LGBT subject headings in the Swedish national library system Libris and the LGBT bookshelves on the public social cataloging website Goodreads. We also wanted to know which LGBT related words can be found in SBI’s controlled vocabulary, to see what words librarians are restricted to. Conclusively both the users and the librarians, controlled vocabularies or not, used an excessive amount of synonyms. This led us to the idea of making synonyms searchable for the users, whilst librarians still use the structure of a controlled vocabulary. Users grouped books under acronyms for the LGBT community as a whole, whilst librarians rather split up the sexualities and gender identities into separates.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this Bachelor's thesis is to analyse how librarians approach selection and acquisition of children's and young adult literature written in languages other than Swedish. What aspects do they look at when making their selection and how do they decide that a book lives up to the library's standards if they cannot read the book themselves?

In order to answer these research questions a series of telephone interviews were conducted with librarians working in different municipalities. The selection of municipalities to include in the study was based on official statistics depicting the amount of immigrants who moved to each municipality during 2015.

The theory used in this study is based on Sanna Talja's study about different attitudes towards the library's collection. The attitudes are referred to as "General Education Repertoire", the "Alternative Repertoire" and the "Demand Repertoire". These attitudes were also used as a framework when analysing the information from my own interviews.

The results show that all of the interviewed librarians are eager to fulfil their patron's demands while also staying true to their own ideas of what the library should provide in regards to content, diversity and quality.

    Abstract [en]

Studies have shown that public libraries are important meeting places to support integration. However there are not many studies including Swedish school libraries and integration. The purpose of this paper is to explore newly arrived and multilingual pupils visits in school library to develop new knowledge about school libraries possibility to support integration. This study is based on the following questions:

    1. How do school librarians perceive their work with newly-arrived and multilingual pupils?

    2. Which methods are used and how are they noticed in school libraries?

    3. In what way can school libraries be meeting places for integration?

We used two different methods. First we observed when 10 year old pupils visited the libraries and then qualitative interviews were used to get answers from librarians. We applied parts of Diaz model of integration and also earlier related research to analyze the empirical data into categories. We found that cooperation with teachers, social skills and structure of working methods could be important keys to school libraries to support integration. The results show that school libraries can be both spontaneous meeting places for pupils where they could talk to someone who challenges their point of view and also structured meeting places where newly- arrived meet others for different activities. The librarians themselves experienced duality to the school library as an open meeting place.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to study library book talks for adults. Through semi-structured interviews with three librarians at public libraries in Sweden we investigate how librarians perceive book talks as a method of reading promotion for adult library users as well as their views on the resources they consider necessary for promoting reading and literature. The results of the study have been analyzed using a form of qualitative content analysis, together with a modified version of Aidan Chamber’s model of the Reading Circle (2011). The results show that the librarians in the study find that book talks for adults are time consuming and that they struggle to attract more mixed audiences than the usual homogenous group of participants. The librarians required more specified time at work for reading literature in order to prepare for book talks, as well as for developing strategies for reaching out to new groups of potential book talk participants.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to gain a deeper understanding of the subject which is about children's librarians and how they look at their professional identity when it comes to the work they do with bi- and multilingual children. This comes mainly from what we have read in earlier publications that exists in the subject as a whole. The analytical framework for the thesis is based upon Anders Ørom and Treine Schreibers professional identities written in the 1990's. The method for the thesis is made up of six semistructured interviews with children's librarians. The main results we got out of this thesis are that all of the professional identities could be found in the respondents for this study. We also found that several of the identities coexisted in parallel within the respondents.

Strong women team (Sterke vrouwen ploeg)2010Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

An example of a unique project (in a nutshell) that presents the public library’s function as a meeting and debating (both physically and digitally) centre in the local community. The Strong Women Project was set up in 2009 as part of the local Strong Women Project that was initiated by the municipality. The municipality asked all the cultural institutions to participate in this project. The library took its part very seriously and decided to start a network project for the women of Schiedam (a playful variation on the famous ‘old boys networks’): the local project "Strong Women Team Schiedam” (in Dutch: Sterke Vrouwen Ploeg - SVP). We named it the Sterke Vrouwen Ploeg (Strong Women Team). Our female Mayor was the captain of the team, which gave it a certain added value. The Mayor, because it was a local theme, was enthusiastic about having been asked to be involved. She is a true ambassador for our town and, during the year, she used the SVP as her personal platform to get informed about the town and the opinions of its women. She participated in 50% of the meetings, showed her personal side when talking about the subjects, and by the end had truly adopted the formula.

    Abstract [en]

The public library as meeting place has been discussed and articulated for sometime. Social aspects are considered and the public library is referred to as the third place or the great good place as defined by Oldenburg (1989). Andersson and Skot-Hansen (1994) found in a study that the local library did function as a meeting place in the community and the concept of the public library as a social center was created. This study examine the concept of the public library as meeting place and the meanings of it. By conducting a discourse analysis the use of the concept in some Swedish governmental investigations was inquired. Koselleck did talk about concepts as containers of both the past and the future, carriers of memories and expectations. The concept of the public library as meeting place, does it mean the same today as it has meant in history? Are there any leads in the historical documents which could help us understand the use of the concept? A Foucauldian perspective is applied and used as theoretical foundation. The study found very small differences of the meaning of the concept over time, but how the concept was used did differ the more. For some periods of time the concept has hardly been used at all, and the social aspects of the library was overlooked.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the thesis is to investigate whether young girls are able to find literature that confirms their identity in the public libraries. The main focus of the study is put on the gender of the leading parts in novels for young people. Interviews with librarians have been executed, as well as with the head of the institute of children's books. Studies of the debate that has been taken place in media in recent years are being presented, as are studies of brochures with book recommendations edited by Bibliotekstjänst. The results show that boys are represented to a far larger extent than are girls as to leading parts. Women write considerably more often about boys than men write about girls. There are also differences between men's and women's way of writing, in topics as well as in style.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine how perceptions of the public library are expressed in Swedish debates about the public library during the period of 2016-2018. The debates centered around questions regarding what the public library is, what it should be and to whom it should be for. Two main concerns were formulated within the two greater debates. One was that there is an increasing problem with noisy, threatening and violent groups at the public libraries and the other was that librarians are ideology controlled when making decisions on the media in the library. The main questions posed in this study are: which images of the public library can be found in the debates and who are given the possibility to express these images? The analysis shows that perceptions of the public library as an important institution in a democratic society is consistent through all debates and the discourses within them. But there are different ideas about things that threaten the public library, depending on the view of what the ideal public library should be and what their main concern should involve. Our study also shows that the library has become a place for debates about questions that doesn’t directly relate to the institution as such, but about immigration and the extreme right and that the articles that relate more about that have had far bigger response than the articles about the library as a place and how it should meet new challenges with changes in the media climate and a descending circulation numbers.

From Discovery to Delivery: An Evaluation of Discovery Service WorldCat Discovery at Skövde University Library2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is to evaluate the discovery service WorldCat Discovery (WCD) at Skövde University Library (SUL) through the usability study of the discovery tool WorldCat Discovery (WCD). By reference to the concepts of “Information Portal” and “Next-generation catalogue”, as well as Dillon’s (2001) evaluation model, the overall impression of the discovery service WCD perceived by users at SUL is investigated; the benefits and the problems of the discovery tool WorldCat Discovery are examined and discussed. Data are collected by a two-stage survey among the users of Skövde University Library, which targets on students and researchers at the University of Skövde. The results show that the discovery service WCD is evaluated positively in general and is confirmed to be used in the future by most of the target group members at Skövde University Library. The features of single search interface and basic filter functions are the major benefits, but the access to full-text articles in minor-used languages and metadata quality are the main problems perceived by target group members during performing common search tasks through the WCD interface. By identifying the benefits and problems in relation to the aspects of discover and delivery, this study addresses a cooperative effort between academic libraries, discovery service vendors and content providers to a “seamless” integration of discovery services with academic libraries.

    Abstract [en]

Based on two university libraries which represents the academic disciplines humanities and applied arts and design, this bachelor thesis examines how their respective collections of zines are handled in terms of preservation and availability. Furthermore, this bachelor thesis emphasises – by the help of Derrida’s and Cvetkovich’s theories of the archive, Bryant’s ontological realism, Frow’s literary frame and Plate’s new material turn – the need to broaden the view of zines as a physical artefact, and the meaning-bearing properties objects can have in and of itself. By the means of semi-structured interviews with librarians, complete with observations of the collections, this bachelor thesis also examines how different views and definitions of zines can have a substantial influence of how they are handled. This bachelor thesis also suggests that libraries need to take the inherent properties of zines – such as their socialfunctions – into consideration when planning on how to treat their collections.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a qualitative examination of main libraries’ work with accessible media. Based on semi-structured interviews with eight librarians working towards children and youth, the purpose of this study is to examine the opportunities and challenges presented by new digital aspects in accessible media. This was accomplished by reviewing the informants’ statements through a self-developed tool of analysis. This tool mirrored the purpose of the study and was developed by compiling the results of previous studies into themes. These themes were then further developed in concurrence with transcriptions of the interviews. The findings of the study were that the librarians were aware that readers with a need for accessible media are invisible, but lack the time to apply sufficient directed operations to make them visible. However, this invisibility also worked through a new mobile app for distributing talking books, Legimus, to normalize the need for accessible media. Thus the work often centered around a balancing act between making these readers visible and not distinguishing them as outliers. In part because of new digital features, there was a lack of direct contact with members of the intended group. This was bridged by contacting and/or collaborating with a third party like relatives or other professionals. Physical titles available within accessible media are limited but because of Legimus this was not the case for talking books. The group’s status as especially prioritized was emphasized by all informants, although they often felt time lacking to properly apply that priority.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to examine if usability (UX) can have an impact on the proportion of returns on a website in the fashion industry. The growing trade through e-commerce has contributed to the fact that the proportion of returned goods is higher today than ever before. From a company's perspective and from a sustainability perspective, it is of interest to reduce the proportion of returns. The literature review shows that there are ways in which UX can influence the proportion of returns for e-retailers. It also shows that the return policy can induce certain customer behavior, the so-called new return culture, which contributes to the high proportion of returns. In this study, two quantitative studies are conducted that investigate how UX can affect the proportion of returns and customers' views on returns. The results of the studies show that UX has a small impact on the proportion of returns. This may imply that there are other aspects that have a greater impact on the proportion of returns, such as target group, policy and prices. Further research is needed to exclude a connect on between usability and the proportion of returns.

    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the extent to which Swedish communications professionals are prepared to use neuromarketing as a market research method. Neuromarketing applies technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging to study the brain's responses to marketing stimuli and is considered capable of obtaining ‘hidden information’ stored in individuals' brains, which traditional market research methods cannot provide. Despite these comparative advantages, the method is relatively unknown in Sweden today. This study seeks to answer two research questions: 1) What attitudes do communications professionals have towards neuromarketing? 2) Are the necessary preconditions for communications professionals to use neuromarketing satisfied? The study uses a quantitative approach and collected data from active communications professionals in Sweden through a survey. The theoretical framework is based on the six essential criteria presented by Greenhalgh et al. (2008) that need to be met in order for an innovation to be implemented. The survey had a low number of respondents and the result is therefore a broad generalization. The result shows that the communications professionals have extensive experience and consider themselves to have significant strategic influence, which is important for developing and managing the organization's brand. On the other hand, respondents had low awareness of neuromarketing and mainly a negative attitude towards it. None of the six criteria (Greenhalgh, et al., 2008) were met. The result suggests that Swedish communications professionals are not ready to accept and adopt neuromarketing and that the conditions for incorporating the method in their work are lacking today.
