    Abstract [en]

    PLA/hemp co-wrapped hybrid yarns were produced by wrapping PLA filaments around a core composed of a 400 twists/m and 25 tex hemp yarn (Cannabis Sativa L) and 18 tex PLA filaments. The hemp content varied between 10 and 45 mass%, and the PLA wrapping density around the core was 150 and 250 turns/metre. Composites were fabricated by compression moulding of 0/90 bidirectional prepregs, and characterised regarding porosity, mechanical strength and thermal properties by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Mechanical tests showed that the tensile and flexural strengths of the composites markedly increased with the fibre content, reaching 59.3 and 124.2 MPa when reinforced with 45 mass% fibre, which is approximately 2 and 3.3 times higher compared to neat PLA. Impact strength of the composites decreased initially up to 10 mass% fibre; while higher fibre loading (up to 45 mass%) caused an increase in impact strength up to 26.3 KJ/m2, an improvement of about 2 times higher compared to neat PLA. The composites made from the hybrid yarn with a wrapping density of 250 turns/metre showed improvements in mechanical properties, due to the lower porosity. The fractured surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscopy to study the fibre/matrix interface.

    Hemp/PLA Co-Wrapped Hybrid Yarns For Structured Thermoplastic Composites2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    In recent years, natural fibre-reinforced polymer composites have been attracting attention from the viewpoint of reducing the impact on the natural environment. Currently, the use of thermoplastic resins in composites is clearly of higher potential than the use of thermoset. There are many thermoplastic polymers derived from renewable raw materials, which are also biodegradable. Polylactic acid (PLA) is one such candidate, and it shows rather good properties that are suitable for applications that do not require long-term durability or elevated mechanical performance at higher temperatures. In order to make their possible use in many technical applications more attractive, the mechanical properties of the PLA can be enhanced by using reinforcements. Hemp fibres can be considered to be a good choice for reinforcing polymer composites, due to their high stiffness, strength, and aspect ratio. Highly ordered textile reinforcements, such as interlaced woven fabrics and unidirectional fabrics made from natural-fibre yarns, perform considerably better than random non-woven mats in natural-fibre composites. At present, the commercially available plant-fibre yarns are not intended for structural composites, but for textiles, which have entirely different demands on the yarns. Thus, work is needed to tailor-make the best plant-fibre yarn for reinforcement of composites. This also includes investigation of the possibility of combining plant-fibre yarns with the matrix polymer in fibre form into one hybrid yarn (a composite preform), and how to do it (twisting or blending). It is well known that fibres provide the highest strength and stiffness when they are continuous and aligned in the direction of the applied load. Natural fibres are naturally discontinuous and conventional spun staple yarns tend to be highly twisted, which leads to fibre misalignment and poor resin wet-out. The structured natural-fibre composites reported so far are based on twisted yarns produced by long-established conventional spinning methods, mainly ring spinning. In this paper, we report our work on improving the orientation of hemp fibres in composites by using our recent development of co-wrapped yarn structures. This novel co-wrapped yarn consists of low twist and very fine hemp yarns next to PLA filaments in the core part, which are wrapped by PLA filaments. By varying the composition of hybrid yarn, it is possible to vary the hemp fibre content from 10 to 45 wt %. An exciting recent advancement has been a new family of aligned natural-fibre reinforcements, which has overcome these issues by using low twist yarns. We also report the influence of fibre content and wrap density (number of wraps per unit length) on the properties of composites. Before compression moulding, multilayer 0/90 bidirectional hybrid yarn prepregs were prepared by winding the hybrid yarn around a steel rectangular frame. We investigated the mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties of hemp-reinforced PLA composites. Compared to neat PLA, the tensile and flexural modulus and the strength of the PLA-hemp composites were significantly higher as a result of the increased fibre content. Impact strength of the composites decreased initially up to 10 wt % fibre loading, but even higher fibre loading caused an improvement in impact strength. From the DMTA results, it is evident that incorporation of the fibres gives a considerable increase in storage modulus and a decrease in tan δ values. These results show the reinforcing effect of hemp on PLA matrix. From the general trend in the results obtained, it can be affirmed that co-wrapped hybrid yarn with lower wrapping density leads to lower mechanical properties in the composite. The study performed with DSC revealed that the glass transition temperature and the crystalline melting point of PLA were not affected significantly after reinforcement with hemp. The crystallisation temperature of the hemp-reinforced PLA composites decreased compared to pure PLA, which indicates that the hemp fibres hinder the migration and diffusion of PLA molecular chains to the surface of the nucleus in the composites. No noteworthy differences in calorimetric data from DSC for composites were observed between the hybrid yarn preforms with different wrapping density. Future work will concentrate on efforts to evaluate the biodegradability of these developing and promising composites.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper examines the thermal and mechanical behaviour as well as moisture absorption of aligned hemp composites using hemp/PLA wrap spun yarns. Uniaxial composites were fabricated with 30 mass% hemp using compression moulding. The properties of composites in terms of hemp fibre orientation (aligned and random), off-axis angle and alkali treatment were investigated. It was found that the testing direction influenced the mechanical properties of the composites. Compared with all the fabricated composites, the aligned alkali hemp/PLA yarn composite possessed the best mechanical properties, including tensile, flexural and impact strengths, lower porosity and water absorption. The water absorption for all composites was higher than for neat PLA, both at room temperature and 80 C. The PLA in its treated composites had higher crystallinity, which was attributed to effective heterogeneous nucleation induced by hemp. Based on SEM observation and theoretical analysis of DMTA data, there was a favourable interfacial adhesion in all composites.

    RECYCLING OF END-OF-LIFE TEXTILE MATERIALS BY FABRICATION OF GREEN COMPOSITES2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Material recycling requires rather pure and non-contaminated waste streams, which can be converted by technical processes into new materials and products by economically and technically feasible techniques. It is also required that there is a secondary market for these recycled materials, and preferably in use areas with high economic value. End-of-life textiles cannot yet be recycled as a raw material in a feasible way. Structural composites are an excellent use area for recycled materials, as they are durable and light-weight products, with excellent mechanical properties.

    In this study, denim woven fabrics as end-of-life textiles were employed to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of high bio-content epoxy resin. Entropy Resin, manufacturer of commercial bio-based epoxy resin, claimed that bio-based content of system is 37 % and the resin is derived from by-products of industrial processes including wood pulp and biofuel. Bioepoxy was used as bio resins in composite manufacturing, and a conventional polyester resin served as a reference material. To create a wide scope of possibilities the composites were manufacturing using the four techniques: (1) vacuum infusion (VI), (2) resin transfer moulding (RTM), and (3) hand lay-up (HND). To determine the suitability for structural applications the biocomposites were tested for their mechanical and thermal properties. Mechanical tests for tensile, flexural strength and impact behaviour were conducted on composites. Moreover, viscoelastic properties of the composites were evaluated through dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Fabricated composites were characterised regarding porosity, water absorption and analysed through microscopic images of the composite cross section. Different manufacturing technique showed varying results. For bioepoxy both HND and VI give superior mechanical properties over RTM, as the latter gives a higher void content, and lower tensile and flexural properties.

    Abstract [en]

    Supply chains evolve in accordance with changes in the market and their ambitions. The evolution of supply chain is correlated to different elements of progress in the business context referred to as performance measurement, innovation and clockspeed. These correlations are the starting point of moving the chain towards the higher goals and therefore are of most importance. In order to assure that the chain is moving on the right path in its evolutionary journey, the journey must start based on the most accurate data available. In chapter 1 an overview of evolution strategy is discussed and two definitions of supply chain evolution are provided. The second chapter begins with performance measures and its relevance to supply chain evolution. There is also a discussion of weighted approach to SCOR model and an introduction of some new measures for further research. Chapter 3 is discussing outsourcing strategies in different business structures based on product modularity. The concept of „modularity balance‟ and evolution advantages with regards to modularity are introduced. The evolution stages from inter-organizational level to network level are discussed. Also two solutions for dealing with uncertainty during evolutionary process are suggested. The double helix is introduced and discussed. In chapter 4, evolution aspects of different innovation methods within the supply chain is discussed. Primary and secondary innovations are introduced and the correlation between clockspeed and innovation is discussed.

    Sammanfattning Inleveransprocessen och plockprocessen på ett företags centrallager har kartlagts, då problem med långa ledtider och bristfällig information upplevdes. Syftet med rapporten var att visa på hur kartläggningar kan användas vid förbättringsarbete och felsökning i processer. När processen kartlades användes SCOR-modellen där processen delades upp i dess beståndsdelar. Problem som observerades på företaget inkluderade onödigt mycket manuellt arbete, bristande lagerlayout och osorterade varor. De föreslagna lösningarna inkluderar Auto- ID, en ny lagerlayout och orderplockningsmetoder. De viktigaste slutsatserna som kunde dras i studien var följande: - Auto-ID kan minimera den manuella inmatningen av data, vilket dels är tidsbesparande, men även minskar riskerna för att den inmatade datan är felaktig. Auto-ID kan även användas för att visa på saldon på olika lagerplatser, vilket kan effektivisera plocklistorna, och därmed operatörernas plockrutter. - - En effektivisering av lagerlayouten minskar färdavstånden, och framkomligheten ökar. Med en ökad framkomlighet underlättas användandet av redskap som gaffeltruckar. Slutligen utförs sökandet efter produkter utförs snabbare, vilket i sin tur även kortar ner ledtiderna, då sökandet står för 20% av arbetarnas totala ledtid. Ett införande av standardiserade orderplockningsmetoder minskar färdavstånden, då det kan bestämmas i vilken ordning varorna skall plockas. Rutterna kan planeras så att trafiken minskar så att två eller fler operatörer inte plockar varor i samma korridor samtidigt. Slutligen medför ett införande av orderplocksmetoder att operatörerna blir mer specialiserade på ett visst område i varuhuset, och därmed förbrukar mindre tid till att leta efter varor.

    System integration is a challenging task for large organizations since they must manage complex IT infrastructures, and utilize hundreds of applications that cause a myriad of complications as a result of rapidly evolving systems and technologies. Over time customer requirements and the automation of internal business functions forced the gigantic service providers to develop and buy applications for different purposes. Not many years before, the applications in an organization were usually separated silos, specifically designed to answer a particular problem. However, this way of working was not efficient. It is not impossible to design one application that runs the total business, however, in reality it can't respond to all the needs inside an organization. In most cases the applications need to interact with each other and to reuse functionalities or data. At this point the concept of integrating systems first came to existence. The progress in computer science and information technology has also affected the way that integration between applications was developed and designed over the years. This shows that there's always some new method that should be studied and investigated. In recent years, the Enterprise Service Bus has come to the market and there are many vendors in the market claiming that they have produced the exact solution needed for requirements of organizations. In this work, the attempt was to construct an understanding of the Enterprise Application Integration practices and methods which have been utilized over the years. Mixed methods research a combination of interviews and questionnaire, and Design Science Research methods were used to generate empirical results. While the first two methods was used to supply the input for challenges of system integration, the DSR build and evaluate method was employed to test the ESB product. The criteria for the test were developed mostly as the outcome of interviews and the questionnaire as the main challenge. The aim was to verify efficiency and effectiveness of the selected and proposed ESB under special designed DSR build and evaluate phases. As a result of both theoretical and empirical studies in combination with selection of different methods in Information System research, the work presents a knowledge foundation for organizations with the aim to make a change in their current system integration practices and patterns utilizing approaches facilitated by ESB products.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper utilises the analytical concepts developed in the work of Basil Bernstein to reflect on the ways in which discourses such as social justice are especially vulnerable in teacher education in England. In particular, under new-managerial regimes the forms of knowledge which are emphasised and valued focus on the instrumental and performative. As a consequence, critical and vertical forms of knowledge associated with social justice in teacher education are either absent or marginalised and reframed away from an appreciation and awareness of the structural and economic causes of inequality. Moreover, the criteria needed to effectively introduce social justice as a knowledge base in teacher education are positioned antithetically to neo-liberalism-neo-conservatism, making them arguably impossible to achieve within the current system of education in England.

    Att föda barn är en unik händelse i kvinnans liv, och barnmorskorna är betydelsefulla för att det skall bli en så bra upplevelse som möjligt. En nationell undersökning från år 2008 visade att fler kvinnor skulle kunna tänka sig att föda i hemmet, om de hade möjligheten. Tidigare studie har visat att sjukvårdspersonalen har för lite kunskap om hemförlossningar, samt betydelsen av att föda hemma för den gravida kvinnan och ringa kunskap finns om barnmorskors attityder och tankar om hemförlossningar. Syftet med denna studie var att beskriva hur barnmorskor reflekterar runt kring planerade hemförlossningar. Tio barnmorskor, som inte arbetar med hemförlossningar, från förlossningsavdelningar, BB och mödrahälsovård i Mellansverige intervjuades, och intervjuer analyserades utifrån kvalitativ innehållsanalys med induktiv ansats. I analysen framkom att barnmorskorna saknade kunskap omkring hemförlossningar samt hade fokus på risker, säkerhet, kontroll och krav, vilket påverkade tilliten till kvinnors förmåga att föda barn. Detta grundar sig bland annat i att barnmorskornas förhållningssätt till hemförlossningar påverkas av en fokusering på medicinska interventioner och en misstro till den normala förlossningen samt att barnmorskorna ansåg att kvinnor i dag har stora krav och kontrollbehov vid en förlossning. Barnmorskorna påpekade att det var en trygghet med den tekniska beredskapen samt övervakningen som finns på sjukhusen, vilket de påtalade att de skulle sakna att ha tillgång till vid en hemförlossning, vilket gjorde dem ovilliga till att arbeta med hemförlossning. För att bevara barnmorskekunskapen och förankring i en ”naturlig” fysiologisk process, bör man bara använda teknik samt göra inventioner i de fall då det är speciellt eller medicinskt befogat.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of the report is to analyse how automatic identification technology affects traceability, and then analyse the effects of automatic identification technology on inventory management. This report is based on the research questions "How can barcodes and RFID affect inventory management?" and "What advantages and disadvantages can automatic identification technologies lead to in warehousing?". In order to answer the report's purpose and research questions, a case study was conducted. The company is a manufacturing company and is active in the chemical industry. The company is categorized as a large company located in western Sweden. Two challenges for the company are to reduce the number of incorrect deliveries and improve the inventory accuracy. These problems are due to the fact that activities in the company's warehouse are done manually. The consequence is reduced inventory efficiency and a risk for dissatisfied customers. During the 2017 fiscal year 45 non-conformances were registered, some of which derives from incorrect deliveries. Empirical data was collected through interviews, observations and internal documents. The case study consists of a process mapping in which the company's processes and activities have been mapped. To obtain a better basis for analysis, a literature study of earlier research was conducted in the field of traceability and automatic identification technologies. A summary of the literature study is found in the theoretical framework. The theoretical framework includes traceability, automatic identification and data capture (AIDC), barcodes and radio frequency identification (RFID).The results shows which activities in the process mapping that identification technologies can be applied to and what effects an application may lead to. It appears that the identification technologies have similar effects on inventory management as they both result in automated product identification and automated transfer of information. These effects in combination with an integration with the ERP-system can lead to increased inventory efficiency with fewer incorrect deliveries and improved inventory accuracy. The company is recommended to implement AIDC, however the study shows that further research needs to be carried out to investigate what kind of barcodes or RFID is most beneficial.

    IT - systemen har blivit en del i samhället. IT -system används inom olika områden och verksamheter i och med detta så har användbarhets faktorer i IT -system blivit sådan som inte går att bortse ifrån. Det finns många användbarhetsfaktorer som alla skiljer sig mer eller mindre åt. Gemensamt för dem alla är att ett system bör innehålla visa kriterier för användbarhet för att godkännas av användaren då de använder sig av ett IT -system. Det finns en vilja att skapa användbara system för att underlätta för användaren. Visa faktorer i användbarhet i ett IT -system är genom tänkta medan andra behöver förbättras för att anpassa till beslutfattande och ta hänsyn arbetsmiljöaspekter. I studien har jag studerat befintliga teorier som redan finns om användbarhet samt har jag genomfört empirisk undersökning på två olika IT-system för att utreda faktorer som påverkar användbarhet i ett IT - system då en specifik handling genomförs. Användbarhet i ett IT -system är synnerligen ett betydelsefull och bred begrepp som innehåller många faktorer. Jag har valt att fördjupa mig mer i några dessa begrep för att relatera det till mitt ämnesområde och lyfta fram de delar som har betydelse för hur det relateras till beslutfattande.

    Datorn har blivit allt mer vanlig i hemmen och kan idag nästan anses som en självklarhet att man har hemma. I och med detta så har även datormissbruket är något som har blivit allt mer vanligt över hela världen. Idag så finns det tiotusentals personer bara i Sverige som är drabbade av detta, men trots detta så finns det inget dokumenterat om att detta skulle vara någon riktig sjukdom eller tillstånd och det finns många som argumenterar mot att detta skulle vara något som finns. Datormissbruket kan sägas vara ett sjukligt behov av datorn som gör att användaren låter datoranvändandet gå ut över sitt övriga liv vilket ofta leder till att personen utvecklar diverse åkommor och även förstör sitt sociala liv. Trots detta så finns det inte mycket information att tillgå om detta och vetskapen om att datormissbruket ens finns är väldigt begränsad. Med denna rapport så vill vi uppmärksamma problemet datormissbruk. Definitionen av uttrycket är väldigt diffust och därför så har vi valt att med kända och bekräftade teorier och metoder beskriva och bevisa vad datormissbruket egentligen beror på och att det verkligen finns där ute. Med detta så sätter vi en riktig grundlig bevisning till teorierna som vi använder och som vi även jämför med intervjuer som vi har med både drabbade av detta missbruk, anhöriga till datormissbrukare och även kunnigt folk inom området. Detta för att skapa en bred och säker bevisning på att det som vi beskriver verkligen är sant och ingenting som vi eller någon annan har hittat på. Resultatet av denna rapport ger inte någon direkt lösning på hur man skall bekämpa datormissbruket eller hur man skall gå till väga för att bli av med missbruket, utan är till för att informera och upplysa vad datormissbruk är för något och vad det beror på. Dock genom att få kunskap om detta missbruk så kan det bidra till en större förståelse vilket är viktigt för att förstå att datormissbruket är något som inte skall tas lätt, utan kan leda till allvarliga konsekvenser.

    For this project I want to cheer my subconscious passion for animals and use them as inspiration and as a starting point. Animals are mostly interesting in the project when it comes to their surface and their structure. The work has been a development of structures and techniques in an experimental way of working with textiles and mixed media on garments. The aim is to explore how structures can form garments. Comparing to a traditional design process this work is explored by a reversed design method where the material are formed into shapes or modules and then put together as a garment. So the form has been secondary to the surface structure of the garments. It is also important that the collection urge viewers to touch and feel the structure and hopefully also encourage people to understand and get involved with the fabric and what it´s maid of. The work shows that structure in textile is a lot about levels and layers in the surface area. The investigation in the work is about creating a three-dimensional feeling that is almost like a landscape to explore. During the process it has been found that it´s a thin line between when the garment has a specific surface structure and when it is a garment decorated with modules of a certain material. For me this could be a neverending life project. A project that can continue into several outfits in various techniques and materials but the idea could be developed by putting up rules like using only waste material or material that has been given to you.

    This thesis is about how you can find the cause of quality defects in manufacturing processes and how to prevent that the same issue continue to exist. A part of the thesis illuminate the importance of identifying the root cause of a problem. The purpose of the study is to highlight some of the many methods that can be used to fins the causes for defects concerning quality in the industrial sector. The data that is collected and are the basis for the result and conclusions of the case study consisted of literature studies, observations and interviews. The quality tools that are presented in the study are “Five Whys” and the Ishikawa chart, which are two tools that, among others, makes it possible to find the root cause of a problems occurrence. The practical applications of the quality tools are presented in a case study that was conducted at Johnson Controls AB in Gothenburg, Sweden. The case study was based on observations concerning one of several production lines, where the current quality problem was critical. The conclusions drawn from this thesis is that it is important to identify the root cause of the occurrence of a problem in order to implement long-term actions and measures. The risk that comes with only reliving the symptom of a problem (and not the root of it) is that it will not be eliminated but exists and constantly requires resources to be alleviated. By identifying the root cause of a problem, one can be assure that it will not occur again, since it will be eliminated. There are various methods and tools that can be used to identify the root cause of a problem; two of them that are mentioned in the report is “Five Whys” and the Ishikawa chart. It is important to focus and resources are spent on such a long-term actions and efforts.

    Detta examensarbete riktar sig till byggbranschen och handlar om hur kunskapsöverföring kan användas som verktyg för att reducera kvalitetsbristkostnader. Kvalitetsbristkostnader är en följd av fel och brister som förekommer i alla verksamheter och kan enligt tidigare forskning stå för så mycket som 30 % av ett företags totala omsättning (Sörqvist 2001). För att minska kvalitetsbristkostnader är det nödvändigt att identifiera fel och brister samt förhindra att samma fel upprepas. För att få en övergripande kunskap om byggprocessen och hur kunskapen tas till vara, har en fallstudie på Peab genomförts i form av intervjuer. Arbetets teoretiska underlag har erhållits utifrån litteraturstudier. Den slutsats som har dragits av detta examensarbete är för att uppnå ett effektivt förbättringsarbete gällande kvalitetsbristkostnader i byggbranschen och öka lönsamheten är det essentiellt att företagen har väl fungerande systematisk kunskapsöverföring. Att ledningen är drivande, engagerad och delaktig för att ytterligare stärka förutsättningarna i ett lyckat förbättringsarbete.

    This study has been made to see how a participatory model of municipal activities works in practice and whether the main purpose, to give users greater influence and a greater participation  is achieved in reality.  This  is  because the  model's  design  as  a  bottom -up perspective, where users themselves should have the opportunity to influence and to feel involved in their everyday lives. Even though the research about the participation model is limited the scientists agree that there is a problem about the behavior and communication to the clients, this will require training of staff and counselors. We have used a qualitative method of semi-structured interviews based on a phenomenological perspective. Study participants are managers, staff and counselors from local government activities in the Västra Götaland region, and they work with clients who have disabilities. The theories we have used is Habermas's communication theory and Foucault's power theory.

    Questions that respondents did reflect on included their views on the participation of the clients and if they experienced any change in the approach towards clients. We also had an interest in finding out whether it is the users themselves who should determine what themes they considered relevant to be involved in and if the decisions they make actually give effect. The approach we have assumed has been critical and of focus on dialogue, power and hidden power. What has emerged in the results is that the model has contributed to a changed approach of the staff. The power has been shifted between staff and clients. As we have problematized the discussion, all interviewees believe in the model but fear that the model will not be continued and only be a temporary activity.

    Personal branding har blivit ett allt vanligare fenomen och uttryck. Det sägs ha sitt ursprung i uppfattningen att alla innehar förmågan att bli sitt eget varumärke. Eftersom fenomenet är relativt nytt så finns det dock inte mycket forskning kring ämnet. De studier som finns fokuserar på ämnets uppkomst samt spridning från nöjesbranschen till idag, då det kommit att bli relevant för gemene man. Den definition av personal branding som uppsatsen använder följer i nedanstående citat. ”Let’s think of branding more in line with bringing forth self-knowledge and selfexpression than the creation of a cultivated or false self. It’s not about selling “new and improved” futures tools. Rather, it’s about discovering the inner and authentic you and proclaiming it to your clients”. Hines, A. (2004). The personal brand in futures. Volume 6, s.60. Problemet vi fann var att lite till nästan ingen forskning rör vid ämnet när det personliga varumärket är etablerat, helt enkelt hur individen underhåller och utvecklar det för fortsatt framgång. Syftet med denna uppsats är därför att utforska fenomenet personal branding genom att belysa dimensionerna underhållande och vidareutveckling av personliga varumärken. Vi vill utforska de två dimensionerna genom två olika perspektiv, individer med uppmärksammade personliga varumärken samt PR-byråer som arbetar med personal branding. Vi vill belysa hur de arbetar för att bygga upp men främst underhålla och vidareutveckla sina egna och klienters personliga varumärken. Uppsatsens metodval är kvalitativa semistrukturerade intervjuer, fyra intervjuer med individer från perspektivet personligt varumärke samt tre intervjuer med individer från perspektivet PR-byråer. Det empiriska materialet presenteras uppdelat utefter de två perspektiven samt de tre dimensionerna uppbyggande, underhållande och vidareutvecklande. Empirin har därefter analyserats med utgångspunkt ur de teoretiska studier som ligger till grund för uppsatsens teoretiska referensram och slutsatsen av det presenteras avslutningsvis. Resultatet av denna studie har lett fram till nya väsentliga faktorer i alla tre dimensioner. Det går även att se att vissa delar av resultatet också överensstämmer med tidigare forskning inom den teoretiska referensramen.

    BAKGRUND: Modersmålsundervisning för flerspråkiga elever organiseras efter ordinarie skoltid och intresset för ämnet modersmål bland flerspråkiga elever och föräldrar sjunker enligt Skolverkets rapport (2002). Eftersom jag i min undervisning har många elever med utländsk bakgrund blev jag naturligtvis nyfiken på vad som kunde göras annorlunda för att se vad en eventuell förändring skulle medföra. Mot bakgrund av detta valde jag att organisera ett integreringsprojekt av ämnet modersmål inom den ordinarie skoltiden under två veckor i två separata faser på två olika skolor som har en stor andel flerspråkiga elever. SYFTE: Syftet med studien var därför att undersöka hur ett antal elever, pedagoger och skolledare reflekterar kring integreringsprojektet. METOD: För att få frågeställningar besvarade valdes aktionsforskning med kvalitativa intervjuer som ansats. Intervjuerna bandades, för att sedan skrivas ut och analyseras. RESULTAT: Enligt elevers, pedagogers och skolledningens uttalanden var det här projektet ett intressant arbetssätt att arbeta på modersmålet även för övriga ämnen. Enligt respondenterna fick eleverna bättre samarbete än annars. Flerspråkiga elever var behjälpliga i klassen genom att berätta om sina hemländer och elever som har svenska som modersmål blev mer informerade om flerspråkiga elevers olika modersmål, maträtter, kulturer, alfabet mm. En liten grupp elever var emellertid något mindre positiv. De ansåg att läs och skrivprocessen var svårare på modersmålet än det är på svenska.

    Econometric and predictive modeling techniques are two popular forecasting techniques. Both of these techniques have their own advantages and disadvantages. In this thesis some econometric models are considered and compared to predictive models using sales data for five products from ICA a Swedish retail wholesaler. The econometric models considered are regression model, exponential smoothing, and ARIMA model. The predictive models considered are artificial neural network (ANN) and ensemble of neural networks. Evaluation metrics used for the comparison are: MAPE, WMAPE, MAE, RMSE, and linear correlation. The result of this thesis shows that artificial neural network is more accurate in forecasting sales of product. But it does not differ too much from linear regression in terms of accuracy. Therefore the linear regression model which has the advantage of being comprehensible can be used as an alternative to artificial neural network. The results also show that the use of several metrics contribute in evaluating models for forecasting sales.

    Föreliggande studie tar sin utgångspunkt i forskning som kartlades under vårt föregående examensarbete. Under det arbetet såg vi över vilken forskning som finns angående feedback respektive instruktioner i samband med problemlösning i matematik. Den åldersgrupp vi riktade in oss på var elever i åldrarna 6-10 år. I det här arbetet valde vi att endast fokusera på en utav de övergripande aspekter som eftersöktes under föregående arbete. Vi valde dessutom att bredda vårt fokus när det gäller inriktning inom matematikämnet. Istället för att endast fokusera på problemlösning valde vi att arbeta med feedback som ges inom hela matematikundervisningens ramar.

    Syfte

    Syftet med föreliggande studie är att ta reda på hur verksamma lärare ger feedback i samband med matematikundervisning. Den målgrupp vi valt att rikta in oss på är lärare som undervisar i matematik inom årskurs 1-3.

    Metod

    Denna studie har gjorts med en kvalitativ ansats. För att besvara våra frågeställningar har vi använt semistrukturerad kvalitativ intervju som metod för att samla in data. Intervjuerna gjordes i hopp om att kunna erhålla data i form av utsagor om hur lärare definierar feedback i matematik, i vilken grad de använder feedback på svar respektive feedback på strategi samt om de anpassar sin feedback till olika elever.

    Resultat

    I vår insamlade data fann vi utsagor som ger en indikation på att feedbacktyperna feedback på svar och feedback på strategi används i relativt hög grad av verksamma lärare på lågstadiet i matematikämnet. Dock verkar den distinktion som implicit görs av forskarlaget Fyfe, DeCaro och Rittle-Johnson (2015) och Fyfe, Rittle-Johnson och DeCaro (2012) mellan feedback på svar respektive feedback på strategi inte vara lika tydlig när feedback ges i praktiken. Vad vi även kan se är att de lärare som deltog i föreliggande studie redogjorde för att de ser feedback som viktigt för att hjälpa sina elever framåt. Majoriteten av lärarna beskrev även att det är viktigt att feedbacken anpassas efter vem det är som tar emot den.

    Skolans styrdokument ger olika direktiv om vad elever ska kunna när det gällerproblemlösning i matematik efter att ha gått ut årskurs 3. Vi har under vår utbildning reflekterat över hur vi ska hjälpa eleverna att uppnå dessa mål. Något som vi har eftersökt är att få kunskap om hur vi genom olika typer av stöd kan bidra till elevernas lärande inom problemlösning. I detta arbete beskrivs vad som kännetecknar forskningen om feedback ellerinstruktioner vid problemlösning i matematik samt vilka former av dessa som är effektiva.

    Syfte

    Syftet med föreliggande forskningsöversikt är att ta reda på vad som kännetecknar forskningen om feedback eller instruktioner i samband med problemlösning. Vi kommer inte att behandla dessa två begrepp som ett sammanhängande fenomen utan respektive begreppstår enskilt. Båda begreppen behandlas separat i samband med problemlösning. Varför vi valt att eftersöka båda begreppen är för att vi vill fånga upp och ge läsaren en överblick över vadforskningen säger om två olika typer av vägledning i samband med problemlösning. I föreliggande forskningsöversikt vill vi även fördjupa oss i vilka former av feedback ellerinstruktioner som framhålls som effektiva när det gäller att utveckla elevers lärande om att lösa matematiska problem. Begreppen kommer även i denna fråga behandlas separat i samband med problemlösning i matematik. Den åldersgrupp som vi valt att intressera oss för är elever från 6-10 år.

    Metod

    Föreliggande översiktsstudie gjordes genom litteratursökning i ERIC (ProQuest) och Primo. Under sökningen utgick vi från begreppen i våra frågeställningar. Vi valde att användaengelska sökord för att inte begränsa oss till endast svensk forskning. Det sammanlagdaantalet artiklar efter sökningar i respektive databas var 43. Vi granskade samtliga artiklars abstrakt och fann nio artiklar som skulle ingå i föreliggande forskningsöversikt. Ytterligare treartiklar tillkom efter referensläsning i de nio artiklarna. Det slutliga antalet artiklar som granskades var således 12.

    Resultat

    I artiklarna som granskades fann vi beskrivningar av studier som påminde om varandra i fråga om design och undersökningsupplägg. De innehöll alla en eller flera former av interventioner. Målet med undersökningarna var genomgående att testa effekterna av en eller flera former avfeedback eller instruktioner i samband med matematisk problemlösning. Genom att testaeffekterna av olika typer av feedback eller instruktioner ville man också jämföra effekterna. I merparten av studierna användes en kontrollgrupp.

    Den här studien behandlar ämnet ledarskap. Teorier konkluderar att det normativa ledarskapsidealet baseras på det transformativa ledarskapet. Syftet med uppsatsen är att studera om en ny ledare i organisationer gör anspråk på ett normativt ledarskapsideal och vilka konsekvenser det får, samt i vilka avseenden det finns skillnader mellan den nya chefens beskrivningar av intentioner och vad chefens ansett sig ha uppnått överens med medarbetarnas uppfattningar. Två nya ledare, som varit i liknande situationer, har studerats och jämnförts. Resultatet pekar på att nya chefer som försöker följa det normativa ledarskapet kan skapa omedvetna hinder för sig själva. Det transformativa ledarskapet i samband med stilen som ett ideal kan medföra oanade problem för nya chefer så som fantasiföreställningar om sitt eget ledarskap. Nya chefer som inte söker sig till normativa ledarskapet har det däremot lättare att etablera sig och accepteras i deras nya organisationer.

    The purpose of this study was to contribute to increased knowledge of individuals selfperceptionsthrough the consumption of Tinder. To fulfill the purpose, young individualsexperiences and beliefs about Tinder have been analyzed. The thesis has an inductive and aqualitative approach.The empirical material was collected through semi-structured interviews,and in addition to this, netnographic interviews were conducted. From the empirical work, athematicization was created based on the statements of the informants and three main themeswere devised. The first main theme approached Tinder's different consumption areas,Consuming Tinder, which is important in the analysis, primarily through its explanation factorfor the two following themes; Tinder - dating or hook-up as well as Tinder and self. Theempirical material was analyzed based on social psychological theories of self andconsumption. The thesis contains a number of topics that emerged during the interviews,including the tension whether Tinder is a dating or a hook-up app. This theme was studied onthe basis of several subtitles to ultimately conclude that the consumption of Tinder is havingan impact on young people's self-perception. The study found a number of different waysyoung people consume Tinder and, depending on how Tinder is consumed, differentiate selfperceptionsto expression. Furthermore, the thesis conclude that young people construct aaltered presentation of themselves on Tinder, and there is an awareness that this presentationis not true to reality. Young adults alter their presentations in the hope of achieving morematches, and with this behavior, it appeared to follow an objectification where other userswere more viewed as an object than a person.The thesis is written in Swedish.

    En investering i en kommersiell fastighet kräver finansiering av något slag. I dagsläget är det vanligt förekommande att fastighetsinvesterare tar banklån för att erhålla likvida medel för fastighetsköpet. För en beviljad kredit krävs det även att en värdering av fastigheten har genomförts. Därför är kreditbedömning och värdering av kommersiella fastigheter två betydelsefulla processer i bankens dagliga arbete. Relationen mellan fastighetsinvesterare och banken är också av avgörande betydelse då fastighetsinvesteraren är i behov av likvida medel för sitt fastighetsköp. Dessa processer för dock med sig ett flertal problem. En värdering är alltid osäker och baseras till stor del på schabloner vilket kan leda till att vissa fastigheter antingen över- eller undervärderas. För bankens del medför en utlåning alltid en kreditrisk, vilken måste minimeras för att banken ska undvika kreditförluster. Syftet med uppsatsen har varit att beskriva och förklara hur kreditbedömnings- och värderingsprocessen för utlåning till kommersiella fastigheter ser ut för tre olika bankkontor i Borås. Vidare har studien byggt på att beskriva vilka likheter och skillnader som förekommer emellan dessa banker. Syftet har även varit att studera hur lokala fastighetsinvesterare i kommersiella fastigheter upplever dessa processer. Studien är främst av kvalitativ karaktär då den största delen av det empiriska materialet är baserat på kvalitativa intervjuer genomförda med representanter från SEB, Swedbank Sjuhärad samt Handelsbanken Stora Torget. Vi har dock även tillämpat en kvantitativ metod eftersom vi har utfört en enkätundersökning med ett tiotal fastighetsinvesterare. Med hjälp av vår teoretiska referensram har vi analyserat det empiriska materialet, utifrån vilken vi senare har kunnat dra slutsatser och föra en diskussion kring. Resultatet visade att bankernas kreditbedömningsprocesser skiljer sig åt främst när det gäller olika beslutsinstanser och interna regelverk. En slutsats vi dragit är att det är bankens interna regelverk som spelar den avgörande rollen för kreditbedömningen. Beträffande värderingen applicerar samtliga banker liknande metoder däremot frånskiljer det sig när det gäller vem som genomför själva värderingen. Utifrån enkätundersökningen med fastighetsinvesterare har vi konstaterat att relationen mellan fastighetsinvesterarna och bankerna i vår studie fungerar väl. Båda parter är villiga att anpassa sig efter varandra och samarbeta för att få igenom en framgångsrik affär.

    Abstract [en]

    Low viscosity thermoset bio-based resin was synthesised from lactic acid, allyl alcohol and pentaerythritol. The resin was impregnated into cellulosic fibre reinforcement from flax and basalt and then compression moulded at elevated temperature to produce thermoset composites. The mechanical properties of composites were characterised by flexural, tensile and Charpy impact testing whereas the thermal properties were analysed by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed a decrease in mechanical properties with increase in fibre load after 40 wt.% for the neat flax composite due to insufficient fibre wetting and an increase in mechanical properties with increase fibre load up to 60 wt.% for the flax/basalt composite. The results of the ageing test showed that the mechanical properties of the composites deteriorate with ageing; however, the flax/basalt composite had better mechanical properties after ageing than the flax composite before ageing.

    Abstract [en]

    Synthesis of polymers from renewable origin has been reported by many authors and it has been found out that it has enormous potential and can serve as alternative to conventional thermoplastics and thermosets in many applications. The use of these renewable resources will provide sustainable platforms to substitute fossil fuel-based materials. To date, efforts made to produce 100% bio-based thermosetting materials have yet to be achieved. Many studies have been reported on increasing the renewability ratio of thermoset materials produced.

    A lot of reports have been made on the synthesis of thermoplastic resins from lactic acid for biomedical applications such as tissue engineering but only few reports have been made on composite applications. The issue of high melt viscosity of thermoplastic resins from lactic acid has been of paramount problem because of its difficulty in impregnation into fibre reinforcement. Bio-based thermoset resins have been produced for composite applications from plant oils and improved mechanical properties have been achieved.

    In this thesis, an alternative route for synthesis of lactic acid based thermoset resins have been explored to solve the above problem. Thermoset resins were synthesized from lactic acid with different co-reactants and were characterized using NMR, FT-IR, DSC, DMA and TGA. Their rheological properties were also investigated. The resins were reinforced with natural and regenerated cellulose fibres in non-woven and woven form, and with different fibre alignment and fibre loading. The resulting composites were characterized by mechanical testing regarding tensile, flexural and impact strength, and by SEM analysis regarding morphology.

    The results showed that these composites could possibly be used in automobile, transport, construction and furniture applications, particularly for interior purposes. The resins produced were found to be promising materials for composite production due to the good mechanical properties achieved.

    A bio-based thermoset resin has been synthesized from glycerol reacted with lactic acid oligomers of three different chain lengths: n=3, 7 and 10. Lactic acid was first reacted with glycerol by direct condensation and the resulted branched molecule was then end-functionalized with methacrylic anhydride. The resins were characterized using FTIR, 13C-NMR spectroscopy to confirm the resins chemical structure and by DSC and DMTA to obtain the thermal properties. The resin flow viscosities were also measured using a Rheometer with different stress levels for each temperature used, as this is an important characteristic for resins which are intended to be used as a matrix in composite applications. The results showed that the resin with chain length n=3 have a better mechanical, thermal and rheological properties than resin with n=7 and 10. Also with its biobased content of 78% and glass transition temperature at 97°C makes it comparable with the commercial unsaturated polyester resins.

    Bio-based thermoset resins have been synthesized using lactic acid oligomers, which were functionalized with carbon–carbon double bonds, in order to allow their crosslinking by a free radical mechanism. Two different resin structures were synthesized. One resin was composed of an allyl alcohol terminated lactic acid oligomer, which was end-functionalized with methacrylic anhydride (MLA resin). The second resin was a mixture of the same allyl alcohol-lactic acid oligomer, and penthaerythritol. This mixture was end-functionalized with methacrylic anhydride, in order to get a methacrylate functionalized lactic acid oligomer, and methacrylate functionalized penthaerythritol (PMLA resin). The synthesized resins were characterized using FT-IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry as well as dynamic mechanical analysis to confirm the resin structure and reactivity. The flow viscosities were also measured in order to evaluate the suitability of the resins to be used as a matrix in composite applications. The results showed that the PMLA resin has better mechanical, thermal and rheological properties than the MLA resin, and both had properties which were comparable with a commercial unsaturated polyester resin. The high biobased content of 90% and the high glass transition temperature at 100 °C for the PMLA resin makes it an attractive candidate for composite applications where crude oil based unsaturated polyester resins are normally used.

    Syfte

    Syftet med studien är att undersöka hur lärare i fritidshem arbetar inkluderande med barn i behov av särskilt stöd och hur lärarna bedömer att en elev är i behov av särskilt stöd.

    Inledning

    Studien inriktar sig på hur barn i behov av särskilt stöd inkluderas i barngruppen på fritidshemmet och de möjligheter och svårigheter som finns knutet till detta område. Fritidshemmet ska komplettera förskoleklass och skola vilket innebär att det är relevant att lärare i fritidshem utgår från elevens och elevgruppens behov i arbetet på fritidshemmet. Fritidshemmet ska inte bara erbjuda alla elever en meningsfull fritid utan också arbeta med att skapa sociala band och stimulera elevernas lärande och utveckling. Studien kommer att utgå ifrån Nilholms (2007) teori om perspektiv på specialpedagogik. Teorin grundar sig på tre olika förhållningssätt, det kompensatoriska, det kritiska och dilemmaperspektivet.

    Metod

    Metoden som använts i studien är kvalitativ metod med intervjuer. Intervjuerna genomfördes med lärare i fritidshem. Metoden som använts i studien är baserad på semistrukturerade intervjuer med öppna frågor. Urvalet bestod av sex stycken lärare fördelat på två stycken skolor. Tre lärare på respektive skola.

    Resultat

    Alla pedagoger som intervjuats anser att de arbetar inkluderande men att det är ett osynligt arbete. De var också överens om att de behöver mycket mer utbildning inom området för att kunna arbeta mer effektivt med just inkludering av barn i behov av särskilt stöd. Det är viktigt anser lärarna att de arbetar inkluderande och att de ger eleverna förståelse för olikheter för att motverka missförstånd elever emellan. Resurser till fritidshemmet lyser med sin frånvaro enligt de intervjuade och för att de elever som är i behov av särskilt stöd ska kunna stöttas bättre under tiden de är på fritidshemmet behövs mer personal.

    Swedish university libraries traditionally collect recreational readingmaterial only to support the teaching and research interests of theirinstitutions. However many university libraries hold a substantial yetunspecified collection of popular fiction. This thesis investigates theextent of these collections and examines academic librarians' viewsabout students' recreational reading in the academic context and theirattitudes towards the role of fiction and of readers' advisory inacademic libraries. The theoretical framework includes literature andresearch about the benefits of reading for pleasure, collections' rolesand readers' advisory strategies. The empirical material was gatheredthrough quantitative surveys sent to academic librarians in Sweden.The results show that academic librarians are positive about thebenefits of recreational reading for university students. However themajority of them do not believe that it is their responsibility to provideleisure reading material or promote extracurricular reading. Based onthe literature review, on the theoretical framework and on the researchfindings, recommendations are made with respect to further researchand readers' advisory strategies.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this Master’s thesis is to examine and present the programmes and activities of school library centres in order to see what functions (purposes) they can fulfil in a municipality and also if and how they can contribute to school library development. In order to fulfil my purpose I have made qualitative interviews with five librarians from school library centres. The theoretical framework is primarily based on David Loertscher’s. I have designed six functions on the basis of Loertscher’s theories and investigated which functions school library centres have got and how they are performed. The result of the study shows that main activity of school library centres consists of the media complimentary function and the service function usually performed as a bookpool or a media reserve. The supportive and coordinative functions are becoming more and more important in helping school libraries to develop. The pedagogical function and the evolutionary function varies a lot between different school library centres, in size and direction. I have also made a SWOT-analysis to find factors that works as opportunities or hindrances for development. The major finding is that political ruling is the most decisive factor. Finally theories in Louise Limberg’s research overview The pedagogical role of school libraries are used when I analyse if school library centres contribute to school library development. The main conclusions are that school library centres can contribute to school library development in many ways both directly through education for librarians/teachers/school-leaders but also indirectly through for example lobbying.

    I dagens samhälle är Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) ett omtalat och aktuellt ämne. Det främjar hållbar utveckling och innefattar det ansvar som företag förväntas ta för sin samhällspåverkan ur socialt-, miljömässigt- och ekonomiskt perspektiv. I takt med att allmänhetens intresse för CSR växer, ökar pressen att företag ska implementera och aktivt arbeta med dessa frågor. Vidare efterfrågas en tydlig redovisning av arbetet för att företagsintressenter ska kunna ta del av informationen. Denna uppsats syftar till att belysa den sociala aspekten av CSR med fokus på textila företags uppförandekoder samt uppföljning och efterlevnad av dessa. Den empiriska undersökning som ligger till grund för uppsatsens resultat baseras på en kombination av litteraturstudie, kvalitativa intervjuer med nyckelpersoner på två svenska fallföretag i textilbranschen samt interna dokument från företagen så som års- och hållbarhetsredovisningar, uppförandekoder och pressmeddelanden. Litteraturstudien gav till följd en undersökningsmodell med åtta områden som enligt forskning har inverkan på företags utformande av CSR-arbete. Genom övrigt empiriskt material undersöktes hur de utvalda företagen såg på detta. Resultatet av denna studie mynnar ut i en modell som visar hur de olika områdena inom CSR påverkar företags uppföljningar av uppförandekod samt efterlevnad av dessa.

    Sweden today, the construction industry, is experiencing a boom that creates both positive working conditions and negative strains. It will be built faster, at a lower price, with less waste than ever before. With these conditions, it is necessary to increase efficiency and reduce waste within the building. The approach for accomplishing this includes various enhancement tools, one of which is LEAN,  that focuses on eliminating different types of waste in the industry. The purpose of this work is to map and observe material handling processes, to then analyze and detect shortcomings. This will create awareness and improvement for future projects. In the beginning of the thesis, a study of literature, articles and scientific reports was made to acquire knowledge and understanding of the subject. The report was then based on a case study that was carried out in Serneke's project, Hestra Garden City, through a number of workplace visits with observations where most of the data was collected. The result of the study clearly shows how much waste (in terms of time and skills) there is in this part of the construction process, as much as 66 percent could be defined as waste of time and resources, as also presented in the report. Herein lies a potential profit that can be made for construction companies. Not to mention another form of service that suppliers can offer, thus creating more jobs.

    När barn drabbas av sjukdom och skador involveras föräldrarna till barnet. Det ökar komplexiteten för sjuksköterskor som tar hand om barnet. Är då barnet i ett livshotande tillstånd blir föräldrars delaktighet en aktuell fråga. Syftet med denna litteraturöversikt är att belysa föräldrars och sjuksköterskors upplevelser av föräldrars delaktighet inom vården när barn befinner sig i ett livshotande tillstånd. Metoden för denna litteraturöversikt utgår ifrån Fribergs modell. Studien är baserad på sju kvalitativa vetenskapliga artiklar. Artikelsökningen gjordes i databaserna CINAHL och PubMed. Efter att ha granskat och analyserat artiklarna kunde sex kategorier identifieras: Behov av adekvat information, Behov av kontinuerliga samtal, Möjlighet till närvaro, Gemensamt beslutsfattande, Tillitsfullt stöd samt En betydelsefull vårdrelation.

    Resultatet visar att föräldrar upplever ett behov av delaktighet i vården av sitt barn, som kan uppnås med hjälp av sjuksköterskor. Föräldrar upplever dock inte alltid att de görs delaktiga. Sjuksköterskor upplever att föräldrars delaktighet är av stor betydelse för både patient och föräldrar, där ett bra samspel mellan sjuksköterskor och föräldrar är avgörande för hur delaktighet möjliggörs i vården. I diskussionen tas det upp att föräldrars delaktighet är av stor betydelse för att främja både barns och föräldrars välbefinnande, samt att delaktighet kan bidra till en bättre arbetsmiljö för sjuksköterskor. Dock kan föräldrars delaktighet och närvaro vara ett hinder för sjuksköterskor genom att ständig övervakning påverkar sjuksköterskors arbetsförmåga samt att gemensamt beslutsfattande kan försvåras genom föräldrars emotionella tillstånd.

    Changing practice by reform: the recontextualisation of the Bologna process in teacher education2013Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of the thesis is to investigate a specific case of curriculum change; that of organizing teacher training courses around learner outcomes in line with the Bologna process. The investigation is an example of a practitioner research case study and looks at how official Bologna policy messages are re-interpreted and recontextualised at the local micro level. A variety of methods are used to collect and analyse the data produced. A form of discourse analysis, as well as a survey of research literature, is used to identify policy discourses connected with the Bologna process. At the local micro level, local documentation as well as teacher talk in planning meetings are analysed to throw light on how the Bologna process was implemented. A number of discourses were found in policy documents; including the need to modernize higher education and to move towards a more student centred approach to learning. The thesis shows that these discourses were mediated locally by a regulative discourse portraying teachers as role models who have the task of passing on knowledge that is essential for the students to obtain before entering the profession. Instead of challenging the pedagogic identities for teachers and students, the introduction of learning outcomes acted to strengthen the fundamental vertical relations between teachers and students, cementing and confirming the level of control that teachers had over all aspects of the curriculum. Changes made in connection with the introduction of learning outcomes had a minimal influence on practice and were contested by some teacher educators. Teacher educators resisted and mediated the changes made by continuing to use their traditional practices.

    Student learning outcomes and their influence on a learning culture2010Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    My paper describes the changes in the focus of my PhD research; from a vague intention to investigate the learning benefits of organising student learning around learning outcomes to a more critical approach investigating the influence of learning outcomes on a learning culture. The research is a form of praxis related enquiry, and concerns a Swedish university level teacher training course for prospective English language teachers, for which I am the course co-ordinator. From July 2007 all higher education degrees in Sweden, as well as in the rest of Europe, have to be expressed through so-called learning outcomes. The introduction of learning outcomes into higher education are a key part of the 1999 Bologna declaration, that emphasises the need to express the knowledge, understanding, competences and other attributes contained within courses and their components. The course concerned was organised around student learning outcomes from the beginning of 2008. The paper outlines my own learning and understanding of the research process and learning culture; from a technical rational approach of trying to “prove” that improvements in student learning had occurred, to a second stage of trying to open up the research process to other stakeholders and then to an understanding of why this “democratisation “ process had only a limited success. The final research stage involves a more critical understanding of the introduction of student learning outcomes when put into the context of the complexities of the local (and global) learning culture. James and Biesta describe learning cultures as the social practices through which people learn, and the combination of the theory of learning cultures and the cultural theory of learning necessitates a different approach towards the improvement of teaching and learning, one which focuses on changing the culture rather than on only one element of it. This involves interpreting the interplay between teaching, teachers, learning, learners, learning situations and wider historical economic social and political influences. While I have only just begun to analyse my data, initial reflections suggest that the introduction of student learning outcomes has only had a limited influence on the local learning culture. Whilst there has been a positive influence on synergy (increasing cooperation and openness between teachers, and also between teachers and learners ) this has had only a limited influence on practice. Other aspects of the learning culture have not been greatly improved. As far as learning opportunities are concerned ( what is allowed, disallowed, encouraged or discouraged in the name of learning) there still exists a culture where examinations tasks tend to encourage the transmission of factual knowledge . Students have very few opportunities to express a critical voice, there has been only a very limited move towards increasing student levels of empowerment; with little or no flexibility for students to decide on the method and content of their studies.

    The Common European Framework of References for Languages Framework, along with the European Language Portfolio are used increasingly today in all levels of foreign language learning. Research has shown them to have positive effects on language learning. Despite this they have only had a limited use at university level. This paper describes problems involved in trying to use the Framework descriptors as the starting point for organising teaching and assessing teacher trainer students’ language proficiency and suggests that resistance to its use are because of the characteristics of the local learning culture. The results in this paper suggest that the introduction of the Framework descriptors has only had a limited influence on teacher practice. Whilst the learner outcomes connected to the Framework have made more explicit the expectations put on students, traditional views amongst teachers about teaching,learning and assessment mean that there has only been a limited influence on reporting student progress and in making decisions about teaching. These views and practices are closely related to what Bernstein has described as the dominant curriculum model in universities, the disciplinary model; characterized by vertical pedagogic relations between teachers and students, with the rules of selection of curriculum content and of evaluation residing in the hands of the teachers. The transmitter (the teacher) has explicit control and education implies a strong emphasis on students’ acquisitions of theoretical knowledge.These charcteristics are in contrast to the ideas behind the Framework, which are closer to Bernstein’s other curriculum model the vocational model, which emphasises the development of specific skills relevant for specific situations and the ability to combine concepts and skills in practice.
