Stadslogistik: En utvärdering av mikro-konsolidering i Borås2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Urbanization is a trend that has increased and is expected to continue to increase. 85% of the total population is expected to live in urban areas in 2050. Thus, the importance of freight transport in the urban area increases and goods-related decisions are becoming increasingly important, which imposes solutions that take into account both the economic and social significance of goods. Today's freight transport in the city area contributes to air pollution, harmful emissions, noise, adverse effects on the city's infrastructure and poses a traffic hazard for people staying in the city center. Therefore, there is a need that increased freight transport does not affect quality of life, health and the global climate. However, the majority of freight transport is inefficiently loaded, creating unnecessary presence of freight traffic. City logistics focuses on efficient transport of goods while taking into account the total social cost with continuous and long-term measures for a sustainable society while effectively utilizing resources. The purpose of the thesis work is to investigate micro-consolidation for freight transport in Borås inner city and further identify success factors and challenges for successful implementation of micro-consolidation. The result presents critical success factors and their importance to different stakeholders along with challenges and conditions that need to be considered in the implementation of micro-consolidation. Success factors can be divided into three categories: financial, practical and social success factors. The financial success factors highlight how micro-consolidation can be economically self-sufficient and how the business can be financed and owned. The practical factors mention how the operational activities are managed. Furthermore, the social factors present cooperation and commitment between stakeholders as success factors. Finally, a more specific summary of potential challenges and recommendations for Borås Stad is presented and what benefits a micro-consolidation brings to all stakeholders in the city area.

Utveckla skrivandet: en studie om respons i skrivundervisning2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Reaktiveringsmejl: En metod för ökad lönsamhet?2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Even though e-retail has increased over the last few decades, the conversion rate for online stores in the fashion segment is still relatively low. This might be due to a phenomenon called “shopping cart abandonment”, which means that online customers place products in their virtual carts but never follow through with a purchase. There are many reasons why customers balk before the very last click. One of the more common causes is that the preferred payment option is not available. However, since all cases of shopping cart abandonment mean lost sales, it is important for online companies to work towards a higher conversion rate since even the smallest increase in completed purchases results in increased profitability. Therefore, it should be of interest for all online enterprises to establish procedures to ensure that customers will complete their online purchases. One way to do this is to remind the customers via e-mail about the products in the abandoned cart, which is called reactivation e-mails, and basically means that online companies send e-mails to the customers who abandoned their virtual carts. The main focus for this thesis is reactivation e-mails, with the purpose to examine how online enterprises in the fashion and textile segment use reactivation e-mails and if they have seen an increase in their conversion rate. To fulfill the purpose, companies within the chosen segment that offer online retail to their customers, have been interviewed about the subject and the findings show that the use of these e-mails is an effective way to increase the conversion rate and decrease the occurrence of shopping cart abandonment. Two different methods for data collection have been used for this study. Firstly, an experiment was conducted among e-commerce companies within the selected segment in order to determine how common it is to use reactivation emails. Secondly, telephone interviews were conducted with several of these companies to gain a deeper understanding of reactivation emails. The results of this survey show that the use of these emails is not very common, but it is clearly a very effective way to reduce the occurrence of shopping cart abandonment. It also increases conversion rates and given the relatively low cost to implement, it should be embraced industry wide.

“Du måste vara flexibel och engagerad”: En studie om anställningsbarhetsdiskursens närvaro i rekryteringsprocessen2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Produktplacering på Instagram: attityder hos ungdomar inom Generation Z2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In today's society, the internet is something that most people have access to. Social media is a popular activity on the internet and is mostly used by young people, including Generation Z. Through social media's high availability and communication capabilities, it creates new opportunities for companies that want to spread information to their target groups. Product placement is one of the marketing tools on social media that has proven to be effective in a society where people filter out advertising on a daily basis. Opinion leaders are another tool that companies use to speed up the proliferation of their communicative messages. As young people within Generation Z are comfortable and innovative, they also have a more critical and demanding approach to what is published on the internet. Therefore this essay aims to gain a deeper understanding of what kind of attitudes young people have to product-placed pictures on Instagram and also if opinion leaders on the platform have an impact on these attitudes. Issues have been formulated as the following: “What attitudes does young people in Generation Z have towards product placement on Instagram?” and, ‘’How does opinion leaders have an impact on young people in Generation Z’s attitudes on Instagram?’’. Examining product placement on Instagram was of great interest because of the fact that the application is the one that young people use the most. However, there is limited research on what kind of attitudes this age group has towards product placement on Instagram and how opinion leaders as a contributing power on this platform can affect them. In order to fill the gap of lacking data, we have presented theories in communication, impact and attitudes which will be analyzed with the results that were obtained during the implementation of two qualitative focus group interviews. It was shown that the attitudes of the young adults are mostly linked to a “value-expression function” based on the reason that they want to be able to link what has been product placed to their own social identity and values. The opinion leader has also been shown to have a major influence on the attitudes of the age group as long as they express themselves in a trustworthy way. In order for the communicative message of the product placement to approach them properly, the age group needs to feel that they can identify or relate to the opinions of the opinion leader. They also require that the product placement needs to be tailored to their needs and interests, this indicates that a so-called “utilitarian function” characterizes their attitudes.

The Millennial Mind: A qualitative study on how to communicate sustainability to reduce consumption2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The discourse of sustainable development has over the recent years become increasingly vital, due to the fashion industry´s over lyexcessive use of natural resources and contribution to hyperconsumption. Hyper-consumption is part of the consequences of marketing, and consumers regard marketing of sustainability to be unreliable. Previous research has highlighted how communicating sustainability can increase sustainable consumption, however the realissue lies within reducing consumption overall. Using marketing to reduce consumption within the consumer is intricate, but in the light of this the generational segment female Millennials have shown to be prone towards reducing consumption.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore female millennials mind and values, mainly to be able to identify and form a way of communicating sustainability with the intent of reducing consumption, that is applicable for this segment. The aim is further to propose how this then can be applied and in what way it best should be implemented to finally reduce overall fashion consumption.

Design/methodology/approach: This thesis uses an abductive research approach and a qualitative method. The research question is answered by conducting focus groups and illuminates the core determinants which are to be used as part of the development of the communication.

Findings: The findings suggest that female millennials need to be motivated into realizing how reduced consumption can be a core value of them. A form of social marketing program is what has been determined to be a viable form of communication since it aligned with the social communicative ways that female millennials are receptive to.

Originality/value: This thesis contributes by highlighting and identifying the underlying values and motivations which female millennials have towards sustainability marketing. Moreover, the results imply that female millennials are of valuable consideration for future research of how to communicate sustainability with the intention to reduce fashion consumption. Marketer can specifically learn what the determinants to include in a social benefit program and thereby create valuable concrete results in terms.

Fastighetsmäklarbranschens digitalisering: En kvalitativ studie om Instagram som verktyg för relationsmarknadsföring2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The digitalization of the society is a fact and organizations must now be adaptable to where their customers are located. Along with this the ways in which we communicate have changed as well as the way you target your marketing. Already in the sixties customers begun to require products adapted to them and their requests, which revealed the need of a shift of focus in the marketing of organizations. Instead of putting the needs of the company first, organizations started to direct their attention to the needs of the customers. It all comes down to the customer and the user, who is now in charge of the evolution of the brand as well as for the underlying conditions of the interactive dialogue between them and the organization. Social media allows companies to be present and available to a larger extent than before which facilitates the opportunity to get a deeper understanding of the customers and their presence on social media. The real estate business is a complex market to operate within as the competition is very tough. This entails high demands on companies in order to stick out from the crowd and achieve visibility. Especially in a society where consumers are daily exposed to advertising and exhortation to commerce. The real estate agents most powerful communication tool is the ones who are generated from recommendation and word of mouth, which in turn is accomplished from maintaining a good relationship with customers. But what opportunities do real estate agencies have on social medias? And how can they achieve and exhort relationships through Instagram? By performing a qualitative study containing interviews with real estate agencies along with observations of their Instagram accounts, the authors of this study could deny that there was any common mode of operation between the organizations usage of the platform for building relationships. Instead the authors identified several strategies in accordance with the theory of how to engage users, which they believed the companies to be unaware of. The analysis of the Instagram accounts urged the thought of a correlation between the number of followers and the perceived reliability of the accounts as the user gives the account their faith by following - which in turn can be recognized by the follower’s followers and acquaintance. However, does the number of followers not necessary imply to more users interacting with the published content, which rather could have connection to the kind of content the account provides with.

E-Commerce Web design: The importance of a first impression2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The technical society we live in is in a constant state of advancement and we are continuallyintroduced to new innovative ways of mediating information through. Today, plenty of mediachannels exist, for organizations to use when they strive to reach larger groups of people, butto achieve web site success; researchers have stated that considerations of user preferencesimplemented in web design are crucial. This makes understanding and addressing whichcharacteristics will be valued from the moment a user enters a site something that isconsidered helpful to the web designer in order to maintain user traffic and create an interest. In other words, something to catch the user’s attention to create a good first impression is necessary.

The constant state of advancement of technology prevailing today has resulted in even morecomplex websites and a countless number of design principles to apply when designing forthe web. In spite of this, usability and visual appeal have remained central in prior research. To test these theories, a study was conducted by using a qualitative method in form of anexperiment consisting of eye tracking and an open-ended questionnaire. To perform the eyetracking the researchers created two mock-ups representing the main page of two differentwebsites. Each mock-up was developed with considerations towards two different designapproaches, one striving to achieve visual appeal and the other towards usability, todetermine which one the participants preferred.

The study contained 50 participants who performed the experiment and answered thequestionnaire. Results from the eye tracking were presented in gaze plots and heat maps andthe result from the questionnaire was presented and analyzed through coding by the researchers.

Final findings showed that the website preferred by most participants were the one developedwith the usable design approach. Additionally, the discussion presented the findings andreaches a conclusion of the study which finds connections between the chosen designapproach of the webpage and the participant’s choice of preferred webpage.

    Abstract [en]

I think you recognize the feeling when you sit on a sofa reading something pleasant in deep comfortable thoughts. It is a summer evening . Windows are open and the front door is ajar when there is a crash as the crosswinds blow the front door wide open and a gush of wind fills the room. Suddenly you are wide awake and your eyes are owl-like wide open. This is what comes to my mind when I try to describe the impact of new technology – such as open access and web 2.0 – in my life as a music and arts librarian. Sudden, so far unknown possibilities open and give me a feeling of anticipation and awe. I will try to convey some of the observations I have made since in this short paper and I will do it in a somewhat shorthand form, trying to transmit my feeling of being a wide open pair of eyes in a strange somewhat disorganized world.

Vägar till skriftspråket: 1-3åringars tillgång till och intresse för skriftspråk i förskolan2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sjuksköterskors möjlighet att arbeta efter barnkonventionen2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The mobile phone as an object has a great meaning for the youth in today's society. Young people perceive their mobile phone as an extension of themselves and cannot bear the thought of being apart from it. However, in different situations such as a customer complaint handling, the young customer has no other option but to hand it in for reparation. The customer complaints is something that is unavoidable and can be seen as a failure in itself but it is the handling of the customer complaint that decide if a customer complaint has been successful or not. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the young consumer and their mobile phone and how this relationship might affect why they perceive a customer complaint handling as failed. Trough seven conducted interviews we asked our respondents to talk about their specific customer complaint situation and how they use their mobile phone. The results showed that the main reasons why our respondents found their complaint handling as failed depended on factors such as, waiting time, additional costs, poor substitute product and unfriendly personnel. It also showed that our respondents have an attachment to their mobile phone and because of this relationship the aforementioned factors might change dependent on how attached an individual is to his or her product.

    Abstract [en]

The Sami mobile libraries in Norway hold a unique position as both indigenous libraries and conveyors of minority culture. This thesis aims to identify the professional identities found in these mobile libraries. The way to reach this goal will be through a systematic analysis of public documents and interviews with two decision makers employed at mobile libraries. The collected documents and interview transcriptions have been subjected to a directed qualitative content analysis based on the professional identities defined by Anders Ørom and Trine Schreiber. The additional goal is to uncover which, if any, unique identities exist in Sami mobile libraries. A main finding in this thesis was that of a new professional identity; the culture and language curator. This identity is connected to tasks concerning the preservation, revitalisation and highlighting of the Sami language and culture. This identity is also applicable for librarians working with other indigenous or minority languages around the world.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Application of Multi-Disciplinary Optimization Architectures in Mineral Processing Simulations2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Optimization is a pivotal point in distinguishing the competitiveness between industries that are developing, designing and operating products and processes. Mineral processing is an industry which operates various sub-processes and produces one or several products. The sub-processes involved are dynamic in nature and differs in discipline of operation. These dynamic sub-processes are sequentially integrated forming a mineral processing system. Currently, the developed simulations for the mineral processing systems have the potential to be used to design, operate and control mineral processing plants to an increased extent, but need broader optimization strategies to integrate multiple sub-processes involved.<br />The scope of this research is to demonstrate application of multi-disciplinary optimization (MDO) architectures into a mineral processing simulation. A case study consisting of two sub-processes of comminution and classification circuits to produce aggregate products is used to demonstrate the application of MDO architectures. The MDO architectures are compared based on problem formulation, computational resources required and validity of the results. The optimization results using MDO architectures can be used to illustrate trade-offs between different sub-processes within the considered scope. The application of MDO architectures can facilitate the linking mathematical models of various disciplines such as comminution, and liberation in mineral processing simulation.

State of the Art in Application of Optimization Theory in Minerals Processing2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There has been continuous development going over the past 40 years related to the creation of models and simulation techniques to predict the behaviour of equipment and processes in minerals processing. At the same time, application of optimization theory into such modelling and simulation schemes has been applied to generate knowledge to improved performances of the equipment and processes. Different optimization techniques have been applied to design and configure different equipment and processes, yet there are no well-established formulations to reproduce the results. The research is scattered and focused on the need and application of the specific equipment or process not utilizing the optimization’s full potential. The aim of this paper is to highlight the trends in development of optimization schemes in minerals processing. By understanding the state of the art in application of optimization theory into mineral processing will further pave the possibility to develop utility in this field. The paper presents two classification schemes: State of Development Stage and State of Application Area as a basis to classify research within optimization related to mineral processing. In order to make smart and strategic decisions in minerals processing operations, it is required to further develop optimization techniques into modelling and simulation schemes to extract the relevant information. The classification schemes can be useful in defining the future focus area for research and development.

Application of Structural Optimization for an Early Stage Product Development2017In: NAFEMS World Congress 2017: Summary of Proceedings, 2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In today’s automotive industry there is a growing demand for more fuel efficient vehicles and reduced development times. These trends are driven by stricter environmental regulations, a growing environmental awareness, and increasing technological development and competitiveness. Finding an optimized and balanced component that fulfils the requirements in an early phase of the product development is a prerequisite for enabling more competitive lead times, costs, weights and minimizing the risk for late design changes. The aim with this paper is to show a process capturing CAE driven development for an early stage development of components in a complex system. The process utilizes structural optimization techniques to generate knowledge, optimize and balance packaging volumes of adjacent components in complex systems. The paper also highlight the organizational challenges and technical challenges involving the use of structural optimization for realizing the process completely. The paper will illustrate the simultaneous use of topology and shape optimization to generate knowledge for the optimized design volume for multiple adjacent components linked together. The linking of the multiple component is carried out using morphing technique and the design space between the multiple components is dynamic in nature during simulation. The mesh in one component is allowed to change according to the mesh of the other component during the simulation. The result from the simultaneous topology and shape optimization simulation generates the knowledge if it is feasible to change design volume to meet the weight and performance targets. The process also indicates how much performance increase is possible if the design volume is allowed to change and thus generating a trade-off between the components performance. The new process has a potential to be extended to other conflicting scenarios in adjacent components which exists in early stages of development process especially, cases involving conflicting structural requirements in various industries.

Student Perspectives on Video-Based Learning in CDIO-Based Project Courses2017In: The 13th International CDIO Conference Proceedings / [ed] Brennon, Robert Edström, Kristina Hugo, Ronald J Roslöf, Janne Songer, Robert Spooner, Daniel, 2017, p. 689-704Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims at demonstrating the applicability of video learning in CDIO based project courses and at evaluating to what extent it benefits students. The courses are Machine Elements (PPU210), Product Planning - Needs and Opportunities (PPU085) and Engineering Design and Optimization (PPU190) in the Mechanical Engineering programme at Chalmers University of Technology. The research was carried out by first creating a set of videos for selected topics in three courses. In total, 22 videos were created including topics such as “Benchmarking”, “SWOT”, and “Prototype lab equipment instructions”. The learning outcomes of the video lectures were mapped to the CDIO syllabus. A blended learning environment was developed, i.e. the videos were utilised as additional support alongside existing learning activities. The videos were then used in the courses and the students’ feedbacks collected through a dedicated questionnaire, the regular course evaluation survey, and in student-teacher group meetings during and after the courses. The collected data was analysed to produce inferences about the applicability and utility of the video lectures. The resulting analysis shows the students’ preferences regarding the evaluated video lectures and instructions. The students find videos more appealing compared to traditional lectures. One of the main benefits highlighted is the possibility of watching the videos in parallel to the design-build-test project execution rather having the classroom lecture only. This helps in reinforcing concepts, and results in less dependency on supervisors during the project execution. Videos proved to be suitable for creating a blended learning environment and improved the perceived learning experience for the students. In order to maximize student satisfaction and interaction with the videos, the videos should be short and closely aligned to the other learning activities. The paper also suggests future improvements to be carried out for video-based learning in the courses, and proposes an easy adaptable way for teachers to develop video material.

    Abstract [en]

Recent progress implies that a crossover between machine learning and quantum information processing benefits both fields. Traditional machine learning has dramatically improved the benchmarking and control of experimental quantum computing systems, including adaptive quantum phase estimation and designing quantum computing gates. On the other hand, quantum mechanics offers tantalizing prospects to enhance machine learning, ranging from reduced computational complexity to improved generalization performance. The most notable examples include quantum enhanced algorithms for principal component analysis, quantum support vector machines, and quantum Boltzmann machines. Progress has been rapid, fostered by demonstrations of midsized quantum optimizers which are predicted to soon outperform their classical counterparts. Further, we are witnessing the emergence of a physical theory pinpointing the fundamental and natural limitations of learning. Here we survey the cutting edge of this merger and list several open problems.

Opportunities and barriers to CSR: A qualitative case study of the most important aspects of CSR in medium-sized fashion companies in the moderate price range2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis covers a qualitative case study of corporate social responsibility work in medium-sized fashion companies in the moderate price range. The aim of the study was to research the barriers and opportunities to corporate social responsibility in medium-sized fashion companies within the moderate price range in order to understand which aspects that are most important for these companies to focus on. Corporate social responsibility, shortened CSR, means taking environmental, social and financial responsibility for all actions of the company. The industry of the company as well as different company characteristics creates different contexts in which a company may work with CSR. The fashion value chain is a context for fashion companies. In order for a fashion company to be sustainable, the entire value chain should be considered, but it is within the upstream part of the fashion value chain that the most damaging processes occur and it is therefor the upstream part of the value chain that was focused on in this study. The size and price range of a company are characteristics that affects how a company may create successful CSR practices. The study also focused on the consumer perspective and the added value that CSR may bring. The study identified several perceived barriers and opportunities to CSR in medium-sized fashion companies within the moderate price range that may be important to consider in order creating successful CSR practices. Costs, quality assurance, communication and coordination where identified as important barriers. The study also identified that the added value of CSR to the brand and the increased consumer willingness to pay as important opportunities. The study found that cost-consciousness, quality assurance, communication and coordination and the added value perspective may be the most important aspects for medium-sized fashion companies in the moderate price range to focus on in the CSR work. By being aware of these barriers and opportunities, companies may create better CSR strategies, which focus on achieving the opportunities while avoiding the barriers.

Preparation of carboxymethyl cellulose superabsorbents from waste textiles Fibers and Polymers2014In: Fibers And Polymers, ISSN 1229-9197, E-ISSN 1875-0052, Vol. 15, no 3, p. 431-436Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Production of superabsorbent polymers from cotton and viscose waste textiles was investigated. The cellulose wastes were carboxymethylated, crosslinked by divinylsulfone, and then converted to superabsorbent material using air-drying, freeze-drying, or air-drying after phase inversion. The separation of cellulose from synthetic polymers in the textile (polyester) was carried out by direct dissolution of cellulose in N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO), or separation by dissolution in water after carboxymethylation of the textiles. The progress of the carboxymethylation reaction was evaluated by measurement of the degree of substitution (DS) of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The DS values of 0.50–0.86 confirmed the prosperous substitution of hydrophilic carboxymethyl groups into the cellulosic chains. The water binding capacity and the swelling rate of the superabsorbents prepared under different conditions were measured. Under the best condition the superabsorbent obtained from waste textiles showed an ultimate water binding capacity of 541 g/g which was notably higher than that of the reference superabsorbent derived from cotton linter (470 g/g). The amount of absorbed water by this product exceeded that of the reference sample after 60 min immersion.

Effect of carboxymethylation conditions on water binding capacity of chitosan-based superabsorbents2010In: Carbohydrate Research, ISSN 0008-6215, E-ISSN 1873-426X, Vol. 345, no 18, p. 2683-2689Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A superabsorbent polymer (SAP) from chitosan was provided via carboxymethylation of chitosan, followed by cross-linking with glutaraldehyde and freeze-drying. This work was focused on an investigation of the effects of monochloroacetic acid (MCAA), sodium hydroxide, and reaction time on preparation of carboxymethylchitosan (CMCS). The CMCS products were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, and their degrees of substitution (DS) were measured using conductimetry and FTIR analysis. The highest DS value was obtained when the carboxymethylation reaction was carried out using 1.75 g MCAA and 1.75 g NaOH per g of chitosan in 4 h. The water solubilities of the CMCS products at various pHs were also evaluated, and the results indicated a significant impact of the reaction parameters on the solubility of CMCS. The CMCSs with the highest DS value resulted in SAPs having the highest water-binding capacity (WBC). TheWBCof the best SAP measured after 10 minexposure in distilled water, 0.9% NaCl solution, synthetic urine, and artificial blood was 104, 33, 30, and 57 g/g, respectively. The WBC of this SAP at pH 2–9 passed a maximum at pH 6.

Making a difference in theory: The theory question in education and the education question in theory2013Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Making a Difference in Theory brings together original work from an international group of authors on the roles of theory in educational research and practice. The book discusses the different roles theory plays, can play and should play, both from a historical perspective and in light of contemporary discussions and developments. Particular attention is paid to the question of whether there are or should be distinctively educational forms of theory and theorising. The double engagement with the theory question in education and the education question in theory and theorising provides original insights in what theory does, might do or should do in educational research and practice. With contributions from internationally renowned authors in the field of educational theory, research and practice, the book will be of value to academics, researchers and postgraduate students in education.

    Abstract [en]

The question of capacity building in education has predominantly been approached with regard to the methods and methodologies of educational research. Far less attention has been given to capacity building in relation to theory. In many ways the latter is as pressing an issue as the former, given that good research depends on a combination of high quality techniques and high quality theorising. The ability to capitalise on capacity building in relation to methods and methodologies may therefore well be restricted by a lack of attention to theory. In this paper we make a case for capacity building with regard to theory, explore the different roles of theory in educational research, and provide an outline of an agenda for capacity building with regard to theory.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the thesis is to understand and analyse councillors’ view on women in Mauritian politics. This thesis focuses on their experiences after the implementation of gender quota in local government which led to an increased women’s representation in local politics as well as the consequences derived from it. The empirical material for this thesis has been gathered through qualitative interviews with male and female councillors from three municipalities in Mauritius. The theoretical framework is divided into three parts which are used to analyse different points from the empirical material. In the theoretical framework we have included theories about the ways to increase women’s representation, why women should be active in politics, and about gender quota. To analyse the empirics from a theoretical point of view, we have divided the results into three sub-categories which are the respondents’ stance to gender quota and women’s representation in politics, the theory of critical mass and the change in political agenda, as well as the councillors’ attitudes towards female politicians. The results from this thesis show that the notion that politics is solely a male domain has begun to change. The increased women’s representation has shown that women are as competent as men in the political field. However, the results do not show a notable change in the political agenda, because not enough time has passed to see any differences. Women in Mauritius are today more accepted to partake in politics but there is still a long way to go for them to be considered equal members as men in the political world.

Får jag säga något?: En studie om delaktighet i en byråkratisk miljö2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Light pressure massage for patients with severe anxiety2009In: Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, ISSN 1744-3881, E-ISSN 1873-6947, Vol. 15, no 2, p. 96-101Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is common in the western world with a lifetime prevalence of 4.3 to 5.9% and is twice as common in women as in men. GAD can have a decisive impact on a patient's everyday life as it is surrounded by unfocused worries and the severe anxiety may interfere with normal social functions. The treatments include cognitive behavioural therapy and/or psychopharmacological drugs. In previous studies the positive effects of massage on anxiety have been shown. The present study described the experience of receiving massage for eight patients with GAD. Findings revealed that the patients were able to rediscover their own capacity during the massage period. This was illuminated by the experience of being relaxed in body and mind, the experience of unconditional attention, the experience of decreased anxiety and the experience of increased self-confidence. The paper ends with a discussion of clinical implications.

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines how three public, Swedish museums use Instagram as a tool for encouraging social interaction and for the building of relationship with the audience. The three examined museums are Livrustkammaren, Världskulturmuseet and Moderna Museet Malmö. By using the method netnography the study has collected posts and comments from the three museums during a limited period of time (2 months). The results present both differences and similarities between the three museums’ use of Instagram. All of the museums have some degree of interaction with users on Instagram, but Livrustkammaren stands out as a museum with more interaction than the others. With the help of Erving Goffman’s theories about social interaction, Anders Persson’s interpretation of these and theories about online relationship strategies presented by Kelleher/Millerand Smith, the essay provides insight into how museums can use Instagram as a communicative tool if the museums want to increase the social interaction and improve and maintain the relationship with the audience. According to the results of this study, some of the more successful strategies are: using humour as a way of connecting with the audience and using a ”conversational human voice”, i.e. a more personal voice. The essay opens up for further studies of how museums can work with Instagram as a tool for communicating with the audience.

Choose us, we are so different!: Free schools’ self-descriptions and positioning on the Swedish school marke2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since the beginning of the 1990‘s, Swedish parents have had the possibility of choosing schools for their children freely by taking publicly funded school vouchers to the chosen school. At the same time free schools started to develop, competing for the pupils and the school vouchers. Even though the free schools are a part of the school system, obligated to follow the same laws and curricula as the public schools, they describe themselves as something else, something “outside the system inside the system”.

The aim of the paper is to identify, analyze and discuss the different strategies of inclusion/exclusion in the educational system that are used in the self-descriptions of the free schools. The paper is theoretically and methodologically informed by Luhmann’s (2002) social theory, which allows to study how social systems (the free schools) describe – and establish – themselves in relation to other systems and society. To describe and analyze the different ways of differentiation, economical theory is used. Porter’s (1980)

generic strategies for reaching competitive advantage and Mintzberg’s (1996) strategies for differentiation are used as analytical framework.

The data for the study is based on official information that can be found on the three largest free schools‘ websites including introductions, welcoming words, presentation of the staff, teacher recruitment sites, statistics etc etc.

The data is analyzed using semantic-analysis (Andersen 2003) which allows to study and discuss how meaning is made inside social systems and how they construct and relate to their environment .

It will be discussed and compared how the different free schools describe themselves on the one hand as legitimate and worthy parts of the Swedish educational system at the same time as they – for reasons of competition and marketing – differentiate themselves from other players.

The introduction of the free schools have been a major reform in Sweden which impact has not yet been studied intensively. Educational research has had more focus on the marketisation of the school system, than the free schools in their own right. This study is to be understood as a first step in a forthcoming larger study about free schools in Sweden and their impact on the educational system and society.

Different Types of Order in Swedish and German Classrooms2014In: WERA Focal Meeting, Edinburgh, 2014-11-20, 2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to examine which different kinds of classroom order there can be found in different countries. Schooling on the one hand is a global phenomenon and the classroom is usually seen as an integrated part of it. School systems on the other hand are nationally different. Therefore it is interesting to investigate whether, and to what extent, differences can be found in the classroom orders in different countries or if they are similar.

The concept of disciplinary order formulated in Michel Foucault's book "Discipline and Punish" is the main theoretical framework of this study. Based on this concept an ideal type of "disciplinary classroom order" is formulated. This ideal type is the analytical starting point for describing different types of classroom order.

The study is based on participant classroom observations, following German upper secondary school teachers and Swedish compulsory school teachers during their work week and in their classrooms.

In the German examples, the classroom is the centre for teaching and learning activities at school; teachers and pupils are exclusively inside the classroom where the activities take place. The German classrooms are quite closed and the pupils are mainly static on their places whereas there is much movement in and out of the classroom as well as inside the classroom in the Swedish examples. This means that there are at least two different types of disciplinary classroom order to be found in the Swedish examples whereas only one in the German.

Film in the Teacher Education Classroom: Theoretical Basis and Areas of Application2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

One difficulty that teachers in teacher education are faced with is the relative distance between the place of teaching, the teacher education classroom, and the subject taught, being a teacher in a classroom. The question is therefore how to involve experiences of teaching into the teacher education classroom in a way that is both practical inside the given frames and worthwhile for all participants, both students who already have experiences of teaching and those who do not.

Films and other mass media productions can be sources for such (vicarious) experiences, which can bring pictures of practice to the theoretical teacher education classroom with relatively small effort.

This paper will start at that point and address two issues: 1) a theoretical framework to examine the knowledge theoretical premises and possibilities of using mass media productions in educational purpose. This theoretical framework is based on the works of Alfred Schütz about ideal types as concept for social understanding and Niklas Luhmann's thoughts on mass media's role in society. 2) The paper will show which aspects of being a teacher and teaching are especially suitable to discuss using films. Using some examples, the paper will point out which themes that are usually addressed in films and why and how they can be adapted for educational purposes.

Is leadership really everything?: Practitioners perspectives on schooldevelopment in a low-achieving Swedish municipality2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is part of a larger ongoing study which is conducted in a mid-sized Swedish municipality where the students results lie behind the national average and lower than theirsocio-economic background would implicate. This makes the municipality in question quiteunique and the general question is, what makes this municipality so special, what are thereasons behind the deviant results? Earlier attempts to identify and eliminate causes have notyet been successful, maybe because they have been aiming at areas of development in a toogeneral way, such as leadership, study environments or student health. The study which is presented in this paper has the aim to identify more specific andcomplimentary areas of development and improvement to the above mentioned. This will be done by using an inductive research strategy with teachers as informants whohave moved to the municipality during the last two years with prior teaching experiencesfrom other municipalities. (School education is organized by the municipalities in Sweden. The local “school systems” can differ quite a lot, structurally and pedagogically.) Theseteachers are due to their professional history capable of comparing different municipalities, they contribute to the research with inductive comparisons. The study will be able to add apractitioners perspective to school development and improvement work. Structural andorganizational aspects are completed by practical ones. The research is conducted usingletter writing, interviews and focus groups. The paper will include a discussion ofmethodological and data collection challenges and how they could be addressed.

Monoculture or Diversity: Types of Order in Swedish and German Classrooms2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to describe which types of order can be found in observations in Swedish and German classrooms and to discuss what effects these implicate for the work of teachers. Schooling on the one hand is a global phenomenon and the classroom is usually seen as an integrated part of it. School systems on the other hand are nationally different. Therefore it is interesting to investigate whether, and to what extent, differences can be found in the classroom orders in different countries.

The concept of disciplinary order as formulated in Michel Foucault's book "Discipline and Punish" is the main theoretical framework of this study. Based on this concept an ideal type of "disciplinary classroom order" is formulated. This ideal type is the analytical starting point for constructing and describing different types of classroom order based on classroom observations. The study is based on participant classroom observations, following German upper secondary school teachers and Swedish compulsory school teachers during their work week and in their classrooms.

The results of these studies show that there can be found two different, and in many ways opposing, types of classroom order in the Swedish examples, whereas only one in the German.

In the German examples, the classroom is the unquestioned centre for teaching and learning activities at school; teachers and pupils are exclusively inside the classroom where teacher centred whole-class lessons are carried out. During the lessons the German classrooms are quite closed and the pupils are static on their places. In the Swedish classroom observations this type of order can be found as well, but there it alternates with another almost opposite type of order where pupils are studying individually with the teacher as supervisor or mentor. The classroom is one of many places for these activities and is therefore much more open for teachers and pupils during the lessons.

It will be discussed what possibilities and risks are carried along by either focusing on one type or shifting between different types of classroom order and what demands are put on the teacher in those different environments.

SHOULD THE DOOR BE OPEN? Classroom Discipline in Sweden and Germany2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate discipline in German and Swedish classrooms and describe its cultural contexts. In countries with compulsory education, it must be assumed that not all students voluntarily attend classes. The mandatory presence of students combined with the ban on corporal punishment in schools means that classroom interaction has to be organized according to certain manners and rules which are understood here as discipline, meaning the organization and control of individuals and their actions over space and time. This study assumes similarities in the fundamental disciplinary mechanisms, although different contexts will create different concrete manifestations of the phenomenon.

Since the observation of cultural contexts is not as self-evident and direct as the observation of classroom interactions of teachers and students, the theoretical considerations here include a detailed discussion of methodology for observing culture. Starting with Alfred Schütz’ concept of ideal types and Niklas Luhmann’s theory on mass media, it is argued that culture can be observed through the products of mass media. The empirical data for this study therefore consists of classroom observations in Germany and Sweden as well as the examination of German and Swedish films and television series.

Comparing and combining the results from classroom and film/tv observations using the construction of different ideal types allowed conclusions to be made about correlations between disciplinary order and whether a teacher is considered “good” or “bad”. This review of the various types of order is the basis for the description of cultural contexts.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate discipline in German and Swedish classrooms and describe its cultural contexts. In countries with compulsory education, it must be assumed that not all students voluntarily attend classes. The mandatory presence of students combined with the ban on corporal punishment in schools means that classroom interaction has to be organized according to certain manners and rules (Luhmann, 2002a:108a). These rules are understood here as discipline meaning the organization and control of individuals and their actions over space and time (Foucault, 1987/1975). This study assumes similarities in the fundamental disciplinary mechanisms, although different contexts (here Germany and Sweden) will create different concrete manifestations of the phenomenon. Since the observation of cultural contexts is not as self-evident and direct as the observation of classroom interactions of teachers and students, the theoretical considerations here include a detailed discussion of methodology for observing culture. Starting with Alfred Schütz’ concept of ideal types and Niklas Luhmann’s theory on massmedia, it is argued that culture can be observed through the products of mass media. The empirical data for this study consists of field studies in the form of observations in German and Swedish classrooms as well as the examination of Germanand Swedish films and television series about teachers and students. The classroom observations were used to create ideal typical descriptions of different implementations of disciplinary procedure. Based on the analysis of teacher figures in various German and Swedish films and television series, several “good” and “bad” teacher types were initially identified. Combining the two results allowed conclusions tobe made about correlations between disciplinary order and whether a teacher is considered “good” or “bad”. This review of the various types of order is the basis for the description of cultural contexts. The results of classroom observations and film studies and their discussion in relation to prior Swedish research, gives the picture of a cultural context in which various forms of classroom order are avail-able, in which they are critically discussed and also can exist in parallel to each other. On the other hand, the German context seems to allow only one form of classroom order, both in actual school operations as well as in the mass media representation and scientific reflection.
