    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Perceptions of Reality through Literature: young adults' fictional reading explored through appraisal and expression2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The study aims to explore how and in what ways young adults show through appraisal and comments their understanding of content and meaning in narrative from a different cultural and political tradition and environment. Moreover, whether comprehension and creating opinion can be linked with fiction reading competence, the ability to distinguish between fact and fiction and develop analogies with their own experience or other political or social situations. The study is mainly quantitative, based on a questionnaire consisting of 43 questions in four sections: A/ Reactions to a short story. This section is the main one with 22 questions. B/ Appraisal of fictional reading habits and preferences, as well as other uses of fiction investigated in 13 questions. C/ Appraisal of media habits with special focus on TV and Internet in 8 questions. Out of 43 questions, two are strictly qualitative. The others leave space for personal comments. Respondents in this study consist of pupils in upper secondary school, age 16-19, and in folk high school, age 19-25. 50 come from theoretical programmes, 50 from practical, and 30 from folk high school. In all 130 respondents, born between 1987-1996. 60% are 17-18 years old, which means they are born between 1994-1995. In terms of sex, 59% are male pupils, and 43% females. Females are dominant in theoretical programmes (58%), and males in practical programmes (88%), and in folk high school (60%). The predominant programmes are Global Studies (females) and Car Mechanics (males). Conclusions: First of all, literacy is not a major problem, according to this study. Only 5% consider this story difficult to understand. Further, the study shows clear distinctions between educational programmes, as well as between the sexes concerning fictional reading. Reproduction of habits and class are, according to Bourdieu, still predominant. Females spend more time reading fiction and pay more attention to cognition, affect and intention within it than males do, which confirms results from van Schooten, de Glooper and Stoel (2004). They are also more likely to reflect upon themes and motifs as well as on ethical issues in fiction. Metaphorical understanding of this story is not generally confirmed. Comments show that lack of understanding can lead to misconceptions. Identification with the boy as narrator shows no gender-match effect in this study, as 2 % more of the females can recognize themselves within him, while 74% of the males and 62% of the females cannot. This confirms the results of Bortolussi and Dixon (2010), saying that: “… identification is a function not so much of similarities between character and reader as the ability to construct an analogy between the experiences of the reader and those of the narrative character.” (2010, p. 314) Identification with first-person narrative is not, according to Keene, similar to narrative empathy (2006, p.216). Appraisals concerning identity (14%) and the reality of this story (over 65%), underscore her conclusion that: “bounded strategic empathy occurs within an in-group, stemming from experiences of mutuality, and leading to feeling with familiar others.” (2006, p. 224) Another conclusion is that reading this story has not affected the respondents cognitively. A majority of 54% don’t think that the story tells them what it might be like to grow up after a war, although even more, 66%, believe the story to be based on reality, i.e. on facts. Finally, a majority of 69% do not think that the story contains anything that might be useful to their own lives. Analogies to what it might be like to grow up under warfare or rough political conflicts today were only shown by immigrants. It can be concluded that the Holocaust is regarded as history, a stage in the past. This might confirm what Giddens and Bauman tells of construction of identity in the globaliazed and consumerized world of today.

Readers´ Reactions to Emotionally Evocative and Morally Provocative Fiction. A Study of Young Adults´ Readings of Two Short Stories2012In: Nordisk Tidsskrift for informations- og kulturformidling, ISSN 2245-2931, E-ISSN 2245-294X, Vol. 1. årgang 2012, no 1/2, p. 55-65Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Reading narratives in print or digitized? Discussion among young adults in focus groups2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to focus on how young Swedish adults, 15-25 years old, and brought up with the internet, express their thoughts on reading narrative fiction in printed books and reading narrative fiction in digitized formats, this according to personal development and social as well as environmental orientation. Nine focus groups interviews were conducted covering theoretical and practical classes in upper secondary school in combination with pupils in folk high school. The results show that a kind of consensus was formulated in defense of reading printed books. Reading books is thought to be an intellectual and emotional experience allowing the reader his or her own interpretation and “to pain one´s own pictures”. This makes reading a sensuous experience which also affects memory. Digital reading is not, according to these results, a threat to reading narrative in printed books. According to this study, the book as an artifact is not threatened by e-books or other digital narratives.

The specific benefits of reading fiction. Focus group discussions among young adults2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Explicit Benefits of Reading Fiction. Focus group discussions among young adults Reading literature (fiction and non-fiction narratives) in printed books has reached a crucial point today. Results from a national survey show that young Swedish adults spend almost nine times more time per day on digital reading devices than on reading literature in print. According to research, students nowadays do not consider reading literature to be essential to their lives. The question is, then, how attitudes and experiences among young adults towards reading literature appear at present. This study aims to investigate young adults’ statements on reading literature in printed books. Further, the aim is to investigate whether reading literature for personal development and social orientation is of any importance to this age group, and if so what specific benefits are to be found. The hypothesis is that young adults today do not explicitly show an interest in reading literature for personal development and social orientation. Questions posed are: How is the overriding meaning of reading fiction in printed books described? How is reading literature exposed to the personal and social development described? What benefits, if any, are related to reading literature? Theoretical approaches used are psychology and phenomenology in reading with a particular focus on personal and social development. Method chosen was focus-group interviews, which also implicitly includes the philosophy of dialogue. Data was collected from 9 focus groups: 45 respondents in all in the 16-25 year-old age group. The categories of students participating in this study were selected from theoretical and practical classes as well as Folk High School classes. The results showed that attitudes towards reading literature in printed books were, according to the limited sample, positive. This type of reading experience was found to arouse emotions, particularly when descriptive language was used with many details. This made readers “listen to their own voice” and enabled them to “make pictures in their minds”. These statements are recurrent. Adding something from oneself also makes the experience stay longer in the mind. Printed books can be appreciated as artefacts, since they evoke the senses when reading. This was not the case with digitised reading. The results of this study also show that literary imagination was believed to be of importance both to the preservation and broadening out of self. Fiction, rather than narrative non-fiction, was found to stimulate imagination. Benefits from reading literature in printed texts included evocation of emotions, self-reflexivity, judgement, imagination, the shaping of identity and improvement of linguistic facility. Our conclusion is that a conversation on such topics in small groups has several benefits. Concentrated listening, and associations with and reflections on oneself, improve respect and knowledge in terms of human interaction. Conversations such as these, practised at school, have the potential to bring new inspiration and interest to young adults in reading literature. Finally, the hypothesis (i.e. that young adults today do not explicitly show an interest in reading literature for personal development and social orientation) did not correspond with the result. Abstract [en]

Searching for self in literature? - Young adults’ reflections on importance and meaning of reading fiction in the digital age This paper aims at investigating young adults’, 16 - 25 years old, discussions on topics concerning uses of literature as a fictional medium, its importance as art and potential source of self-understanding and empathy, and how the experience of fiction and poetry in books differs from other fictional media. Finally, if and how fictional and reality-based narration on the whole are thought of as sources of truth or speculation. According to these topics, questions to be answered are: 1/ how do interests in and attitudes towards reading fiction and poetry appear in conversation among young adults? 2/how does reading literature and fiction relate to personal and social identities among young adults in conversation? 3/ how does conversation on these topics manifest itself in similarities, differences, groupthink, etc. within and/or between groups of young adults? The theoretical framework is based on literature and reception studies, the philosophy of dialogue and hermeneutics, social psychology, and media and communication studies. The method used in this study is focus-group interviews based on groups consisting of 4-6 respondents in each. The population is pupils in upper secondary school, in theoretical as well as practical programs, and in folk high school. Each category is represented by two groups, which will be approximately 30 respondents in all. The dialogue between the respondents is important within the focus groups. The analysis will be processed in three stages. First, conversational and communicational analysis is processed in search of patterns of associations and uses of analogies, distinctions, metaphors, and examples. Second, narrative analysis will be applied in search of personal experiences within the respondents’ conversation, considered as narratives. Third, content analysis is processed in order to find patterns within each category as well as similarities and differences in between the three categories.

"What's so special about reading fiction?" - Young Swedish adults' opinions and experiences2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

What’s so special about reading fiction?” -  Young adults’ attitudes and ideas in personal interviews

Reading fiction in printed books is declining among young adults today.  Fiction in other media and formats are competing on attention and time of this group, raised in the internet society and with new literacies.  The aim of this study is to investigate how attitudes and experiences are expressed by young adults toward reading fiction. Questions posed are: What are believed to be the most significant effects from reading fiction compared to watching film? What are the thoughts and beliefs of reading fiction in social life and in political community? What are the thoughts of learning from fiction?  How is reading fiction in various formats and editions described? How is the future of reading fiction reflected upon?

Personal interviews with 17 young adults, 16 – 22 years of age, were conducted.  Respondents were students in upper secondary school, vocational as well university –training programs, and in Folk High School.  Theoretical approaches to this study were based on the philosophy of Martha Nussbaum, on literary scholars Suzanne Keen, Rita Felski, and Lisa Zunshine, but also on inter-disciplinary approaches to reading literature conducted by scholars in the International Society for the Empirical Study of Literature and Media (IGEL).

Results indicate that the respondents, heavy-readers or not, find reading fiction to have positive effects like absorption into imaginative story-worlds, mainly fantasy-genres. This is found to be relaxing and giving new energy to the reader. Reading fiction is also found to effect the reader´s imagination when making up personal pictures in mind, which is not an effect from watching film. Verbalization and discussion on fiction is un-common, although reading fiction is believed to be important in society in general.  Reading fiction is identified with printed books, but not with e-reading.

Young Adults in Sweden on Reading Literary Fiction in Print and Electronic Media2016In: CLCWeb, ISSN 1481-4374, E-ISSN 1481-4374, Vol. 18, no 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In her article "Views of the Internet Genreation on Reading Fiction. Discussions between young adults in focus groups" Skans Kersti Nilsson analyses young adults' (16-25 years old) reflections on the reading of literatrue, their reading of fiction in printed books as opposed to using other forms of media and format, and the benefit the reading of fiction is seen to give. In this investigation focus groups interviews have been chosen as a means of studying how conversations on the importance of reading fiction develop inside as well as outside school. The result shows that young adults here have been shown to have derived benefit from reading fictive literature, and they think this yields more than filmed fictive literature. Further, they do not prefer reading fictive literature in e-format as opposed to printed books. Finally, they think that reading fiction is important for self-insight and personality development.

The case of the e-book in "small language" culture: media technology and the digital society2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

All datainsamling i projektet sker enligt VR:s etiska riktlinjer.

The tensions of e-book creation and distribution in a small-language culture2015In: Northern Lights, ISSN 1601-829X, Vol. 13, no 1, p. 29-47Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We report on research in progress on the e-book phenomenon in Sweden, the aim of which is to explore the impact of the e-book at every stage, from authorship, through publishing, library lending and bookselling to readership. Here two aspects of the research are covered, the attitudes of authors and publishers towards e-books, to demonstrate the ‘early adoption’ stage of the e-book in the Swedish market. Interviews with authors reveal that most regard e-books favourably, although most of those who have a contract with publishers see it as a by-product of print publishing. Most authors do not have much experience in e-book publishing or self-publishing. The survey of publishers reveals ambivalence towards e-books and in their relationships with libraries and booksellers. The main ‘drivers’ in the uptake of e-books are consumers’ demands for portable, convenient formats and the search for more economic solutions to the provision of textbooks.

Litteratur som livskunskap: tvärvetenskapliga perspektiv på personlighetsutvecklande läsning2009Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Children's Voices: Differentiating a Child Perspective from a Child's Perspective.2015In: Developmental Neurorehabilitation, ISSN 1751-8423, E-ISSN 1751-8431, Vol. 18, no 3, p. 162-168Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: The aim of this paper was to discuss differences between having a child perspective and taking the child’s perspective based on the problem being investigated. Methods: Conceptual paper based on narrative review. Results: The child’s perspective in research concerning children that need additional support are important. The difference between having a child perspective and taking the child’s perspective in conjunction with the need to know children’s opinions has been discussed in the literature. From an ideological perspective the difference between the two perspectives seems self-evident, but the perspectives might be better seen as different ends on a continuum solely from an adult’s view of children to solely the perspective of children themselves. Depending on the research question, the design of the study may benefit from taking either perspective. In this article, we discuss the difference between the perspectives based on the problem being investigated, children’s capacity to express opinions, environmental adaptations and the degree of interpretation needed to understand children’s opinions. Conclusion: The examples provided indicate that children’s opinions can be regarded in most research, although to different degrees. The facial affective scale as a predictor for pain unpleasantness when children undergo immunizations2014In: Nursing Research and Practice, ISSN 2090-1429, E-ISSN 2090-1437, no 628198Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Needle fear is a common problem in children undergoing immunization. To ensure that the individual child’s needs are met during a painful procedure it would be beneficial to be able to predict whether there is a need for extra support. The self-reporting instrument facial affective scale (FAS) could have potential for this purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the FAS can predict pain unpleasantness in girls undergoing immunization. Girls, aged 11-12 years, reported their expected pain unpleasantness on the FAS at least two weeks before and then experienced pain unpleasantness immediately before each vaccination. The experienced pain unpleasantness during the vaccination was also reported immediately after each immunization. The level of anxiety was similarly assessed during each vaccination and supplemented with stress measures in relation to the procedure in order to assess and evaluate concurrent validity. The results show that the FAS is valid to predict pain unpleasantness in 11-12-year-old girls who undergo immunizations and that it has the potential to be a feasible instrument to identify children who are in need of extra support to cope with immunization. In conclusion, the FAS measurement can facilitate caring interventions.

Young adults' childhood experiences of support when living with a parent with a mental illness2015In: Journal of child health care, ISSN 1367-4935, Vol. 19, no 4, p. 444-453Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There are several concerns in relation to children living with a parent suffering from a mental illness. In such circumstances, the health-care professionals need to involve the whole family, offering help to the parents on parenting as well as support for their children. These children are often helped by participating in meetings that provide them with contact with others with similar experiences. The aim of this study was to investigate young adults' childhood experiences of support groups when living with a mentally ill parent. Seven young women were chosen to participate in this study. A qualitative descriptive method was chosen. The main category emerged as 'the influence of life outside the home because of a parent's mental illness' from the two generic categories: 'a different world' and 'an emotion-filled life'. The participants' friends did not know that their parent was ill and they 'always had to…take responsibility for what happened at home'. These young adults appreciated the support group activities they participated in during their childhood, stating that the meetings had influenced their everyday life as young adults. Despite this, they associated their everyday life with feelings of being different. This study highlights the need for support groups for children whose parents suffer from mental illness.

Procedural and postoperative pain management in children: experiences, assessments and possibilities to reduce pain, distress and anxiety2010Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Children’s visits to hospital are often connected with painfulexaminations and treatments. If these situations are associated withunsuccessful alleviation of pain, the children may develop distress, anxiety and even pain sensitization. Effective pain management including pharmacological treatment and coping methods that support the children when undergoing examinations or treatments could reduce these harmful effects. Distraction methods such as serious games and music medicine are techniques to deviate attention away from procedural or postoperative pain, and these may help children create positive experiences. There is a need to examine these interventions among children in hospital.

Assessing children’s anxiety using the modified short State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Talking Mats: A pilot study2012In: Nursing Research and Practice, ISSN 2090-1429, E-ISSN 2090-1437Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background. Preoperative anxiety complicates treatment and requires assessment by nurses in children. Children, with or without disability, are helped when pictures are used to support communication. The purpose of this pilot study was to test the reliability and validity of the modified short State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) using a modified Talking Mats method in children undergoing day surgeries. Method. A modified short STAI with pictorial support along the lines of the Talking Mats method was pre- and postoperatively administered to 42 typically developing children aged three to nine years. The parents assessed the children's anxiety, simultaneously and independently, by scoring the short STAI by proxy. Results. The modified short STAI showed moderate internal consistency and good construct validity in the age group seven to nine years. Conclusions. The results of this study support the use of the instrument for self-reports in children aged seven to nine years. Future research will explore the possibilities of also using this instrument for children with cognitive and communicative difficulties.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to test how distraction influences pain, distress and anxiety in children during wound care. Sixty participants aged 5-12years were randomized to three groups: serious gaming, the use of lollipops and a control group. Self-reported pain, distress, anxiety and observed pain behaviour were recorded in conjunction with wound care. Serious gaming, an active distraction, reduced the observed pain behaviour and self-reported distress compared with the other groups. A sense of control and engagement in the distraction, together, may be the explanation for the different pain behaviours when children use serious gaming.

The FLACC behavioral scale for procedural pain assessment in children aged 5-16 years2008In: Pediatric Anaesthesia, ISSN 1155-5645, E-ISSN 1460-9592, Vol. 18, no 8, p. 767-774Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives:  To evaluate the concurrent and construct validity and the interrater reliability of the Face, Legs, Activity, Cry and Consolability (FLACC) scale during procedural pain in children aged 5–16 years. Background:  Self-reporting of pain is considered to be the primary source of information on pain intensity for older children but a validated observational tool will provide augment information to self-reports during painful procedures. Methods:  Eighty children scheduled for peripheral venous cannulation or percutaneous puncture of a venous port were included. In 40 cases two nurses simultaneously and independently assessed pain by using the FLACC scale and in 40 cases one of these nurses assessed the child. All children scored the intensity of pain by using the Coloured Analogue Scale (CAS) and distress by the Facial Affective Scale (FAS). Results:  Concurrent validity was supported by the correlation between FLACC scores and the children’s self-reported CAS scores during the procedure (r = 0.59, P < 0.05). A weaker correlation was found between the FLACC scores and children’s self-reported FAS (r = 0.35, P < 0.05). Construct validity was demonstrated by the increase in median FLACC score to 1 during the procedure compared with 0 before and after the procedure (P < 0.001). Interrater reliability during the procedure was supported by adequate kappa statistics for all items and for the total FLACC scores (κ = 0.85, P < 0.001). Conclusions:  The findings of this study support the use of FLACC as a valid and reliable tool for assessing procedural pain in children aged 5–16 years.

The use of Virtual Reality for needle-related procedural pain and distress in children and adolescents in a paediatric oncology unit2009In: European Journal of Oncology Nursing, ISSN 1462-3889, E-ISSN 1532-2122, Vol. 13, no 2, p. 102-109Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIM: It is essential to minimize pain and distress during painful procedures in children. This study examined the effect of using non-immersive Virtual Reality (VR) during a needle-related procedure on reported pain or distress of children and adolescents in a paediatric oncology unit and surveyed their response to the use of VR-equipment during the procedure. METHOD: Twenty-one children and adolescents were included in an intervention group with non-immersive VR and another 21 children and adolescents in a control group where they underwent either venous punctures or subcutaneous venous port devices. Self-reported pain and distress, heart rate and observational pain scores were collected before, during and after the procedures. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted in conjunction with the completed intervention. RESULTS: Self-reported and observed pain and distress scores were low and few significant differences of quantitative data between the groups were found. Two themes emerged in the analysis of the interviews; the VR game should correspond to the child and the medical procedure and children enjoyed the VR game and found that it did distract them during the procedure. CONCLUSION: The interviews showed that non-immersive VR is a positive experience for children undergoing a minor procedure such as venous puncture or a subcutaneous venous port access.

Children’s experiences of procedural pain management in conjunction with trauma wound dressings2011In: Journal of Advanced Nursing, ISSN 0309-2402, E-ISSN 1365-2648, Vol. 67, no 7, p. 1449-1457Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim.  This paper is a report of the experiences of children (5–10 years) of procedural pain when they underwent a trauma wound care session. Background.  Procedural pain in conjunction with trauma wound care often induces anxiety and distress in children. Children need to alleviate pain and avoid the development of fear in conjunction with examinations and treatments. The nurse could help children to reach this goal by using the comfort theory, which describes holistic nursing in four contexts: physical, psychospiritual, environmental and sociocultural. Few studies have focused on children’s experiences of comforting activities in conjunction with trauma wound dressings. Methods.  This study was conducted between May 2008 and January 2010. Thirty-nine participants aged 5–10 were consecutively included in this study. The wound care session was standardized for all the participants, and semi-structured qualitative interviews with open-ended questions were conducted with all the children in conjunction with the procedure. All the interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed with qualitative content analysis. Findings.  Four themes were identified: clinical competence, distraction, participation and security. The children were helped to reach comforting activities to enhance pain management. Conclusion.  Children require more than just analgesics in wound care. They also need to experience security and participation in this context. When children feel clinical competence in wound care, they trust the nurse to carry out the wound dressing and instead can focus on the distraction that increases their positive outcomes.

Massage therapy in postoperative rehabilitation of children and adolescents with cerebral palsy: a pilot study2012In: Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, ISSN 1744-3881, E-ISSN 1873-6947, Vol. 17, no 3, p. 127-131Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim The purpose of this pilot study was to explore the use of massage therapy in children with cerebral palsy undergoing post-operative rehabilitation. Material and method Three participants were randomized to massage therapy and another three participants to rest. All children had undergone surgery in one or two lower limbs. Pain, wellbeing, sleep quality, heart rate and qualitative data were collected for each child. Results The scores of pain intensity and discomfort were low in all participants. Heart rate decreased in participants who were randomized to rest, but no change was found in the massage therapy group. Conclusions The lack of decrease in heart rate in the study group of massage therapy may imply an increased sensitivity to touch in the post-operative setting. Further research with larger study populations are needed to evaluate how and when massage therapy is useful for children with cerebral palsy.

    Abstract [en]

Aim:  To test whether postoperative music listening reduces morphine consumption and influence pain, distress, and anxiety after day surgery and to describe the experience of postoperative music listening in school-aged children who had undergone day surgery. Background:  Music medicine has been proposed to reduce distress, anxiety, and pain. There has been no other study that evaluates effects of music medicine (MusiCure®) in children after minor surgery. Methods:  Numbers of participants who required analgesics, individual doses, objective pain scores (Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability [FLACC]), vital signs, and administration of anti-emetics were documented during postoperative recovery stay. Self-reported pain (Coloured Analogue Scale [CAS]), distress (Facial Affective Scale [FAS]), and anxiety (short State-Trait Anxiety Inventory [STAI]) were recorded before and after surgery. In conjunction with the completed intervention semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted. Results:  Data were recorded from 80 children aged 7–16. Forty participants were randomized to music medicine and another 40 participants to a control group. We found evidence that children in the music group received less morphine in the postoperative care unit, 1/40 compared to 9/40 in the control group. Children’s individual FAS scores were reduced but no other significant differences between the two groups concerning FAS, CAS, FLACC, short STAI, and vital signs were shown. Children experienced the music as ‘calming and relaxing.’ Conclusions:  Music medicine reduced the requirement of morphine and decreased the distress after minor surgery but did not else influence the postoperative care.

Uppstart av Totalt Produktivt Underhåll på Tour & Andersson AB2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In order to continue to be competitive in the current industrial climate, producers must increase efficiency at their plants. Several Swedish companies choose to utilise the principles of Lean production. Tour & Andersson AB (TA) has elected to create their own model using Toyota’s productions system which has been named TAPS (Tour & Andersson Production System). Following two years of working with TAPS the company has decided to introduce Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). Most of the work carried out in the maintenance department today is in form of repairs to already faulty equipment. Only 10 % of their resources are utilised to take preventative measures. Some resources in the form of maintenance systems are available, but are currently not used to their full potential. This report is founded on the company’s needs to make the maintenance operation more efficient in order to reduce costs and to reach a high level of service on delivery to the customer. The company is also striving to increase staff participation and to guarantee a high level of their safety and environmental work. The contents of this report have been collected through various literature, observations of the operation, interviews and one survey. The summary information aims to explain the introduction process from TA’s perspective and is designed to consider TA’s existing improvement processes and working methods. The introduction of TPM as a working method in an organisation would normally be implemented in 12 steps: 1. Inform of the management’s decision to introduce TPU 2. Create an organisation for change and develop pilot areas 3. Education and information 4. Develop policy and goals 5. Formulate a key plan for the introduction of TPU 6. Staff meeting and celebration of TPU introduction 7. Measure and analyse OEE 8. Operator maintenance in 7 steps 9. Specialist maintenance 10. In-service training (Development of competency) 11. Equipment planning 12. Devise new goals TA has at this stage reached point number 2; a steering committee has been formed which has began looking at pilot projects. Further knowledge of TPM still needs to be gained and hence the steering committee has discussed the possibilities of purchasing relevant technical literature, organising lectures and making educational visits to other plants where TPM has already been implemented. Overall, the news of the introduction of a new tool to increase the utilisation of the company’s equipment, has been greeted positively. The expectation is that the report will be used as a guide and steer Tour & Andersson in the right direction in their efforts towards an efficient and economical operation.

    Abstract [en]

This report contains a programming improvement work in a LabVIEW™ fire testing furnace control system for SP Fire Technology in Borås. Here materials and products behaviour are tested and evaluated, being exposed to fire. For this task, UGNET is being used for control and surveillance of the testing furnace system. System hardware has been updated gradually through the years, while the software has been neglected. The task consisted of gaining knowledge of LabVIEW™ and the control system in whole. A further necessary measure is needed concerning program interface and localisation and elimination of useless code and program errors. Documentation from the work is presented in this report. The project group have approach these problems by analyzing code structure, searching and eliminating errors within the program and creating useful functions. All the updates has carefully been tested and checked during live furnace tests in the laboratory. Improvements have been made continuously in consultation with furnace operators and support from Benima. The work has resulted in a modern and well functioning UGNET program interface, eliminated useless code and a number of new useful program functions.

Läsundervisning: Lärarnas metoder2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Direkt eller indirekt service på Göteborgs stadsbibliotek 1891-19601996Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes the development of direct and indirect service at the former Gothenburg city library. This was during this period of time not the public library of the town, but a scientific library mostly serving the college, although also open to the public. Furthermore the services offered in Gothenburg are compared with those of the two old Swedish university libraries in Uppsala and Lund. The investigated direct serviceforms are "making material available", "guidance", and "localities". The indirect service areas are "the catalogue" and "the personnel and their competence". The conclusion is that the differences weren't that big and that Gothenburg city library was a modern library providing about the same services as you could find in Uppsala and Lund. In some instances Gothenburg city library also seems to have provided better service. This is especially true concerning user education where they offered courses already in 1939 which perhaps made them first out in Sweden.

Saklig grund och entledigande av revisorn: en förändring i revisorsdirektivet2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This Masters thesis aims to examine how Swedish public libraries deal with the new challenge of evaluating web resources. In order to study this we have asked staff involved in gathering links for the libraries web sites to participate in a survey concerning how they go about choosing links. Apart from trying to capture this procedure it has been our purpose to establish whether the libraries feel they should provide their patrons with evaluated links at all and in what way they are influenced by other libraries or other main figures involved when choosing a link. We were also interested in the differences between libraries with large and small link collections. When defining evaluation, we have only focused on content. The survey was made available on the Web and of the 154 public libraries with links on their web sites that were contacted, 87 chose to participate. The results proved that most libraries consider it their task to provide their patrons with access to evaluated links, although for some libraries this task is in reality too time consuming to carry out. The most frequent evaluations proved to be the establishment of the author of the web page, whether the web page had been recently updated and to make sure the links on the evaluated web page were not broken. The respondents also saw a strong connection between the web pages top domain and its reliability. The respondents with large link collections proved to be more active in their search for new links.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study is about fourteen-year-old boys, who are not interested in reading. It deals with what thoughts and feelings some boys have around books, reading and libraries. Further the study investigates the boys' leisure activities and their making of identities. The study is built on interviews among twelve boys in a secondary school. The result is compared to earlier reports and research. The outcome indicates that most boys feel it is boring to read. Despite this some leisure reading occurs. The boys read mainly comics and magazines in connection with their interests. Among the boys, half of them read books in their spare time to a small extent. In the first place their choices were action and adventure books. All of the boys visit the school library when they have to select something to read for the compulsory reading in school. On the contrary only half of the boys visit the public library for the purpose of meeting friends or of reading comics and magazines. All of them have a lot of hobbies and the activities they choose have masculine attributes. These activities can be connected to youth culture and their making of men. Our conception is that by giving boys male reading models and take advantage of their interests in choosing books, it is possible to increase their desire for reading. We think this is possible through a more developed co-operation between parents, school and library.

TRE BLIR TVÅ: EN HÅLLBAR EKVATION?2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
