Fyrtio år i vänsterfil2009Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how organizational change is experienced by a group of librarians at a medical library. The main focus is the librarians’ own experience of this change. The change consists of making the medical library a fully digital library with strictly work related materials. Prior to the change the library was used as a public library as well as a medical library, with a variety of literature and quite a large physical space.

To find out how the organizational change was experienced by the librarians the study uses qualitative semi-structured interviews as method. When analyzing the interviews the theoretical framework of Cullberg's crises theory is used.

The results show that there have been a lot of crises experienced. Though there are individual differences in how much these crises are experienced by the respondents. The study’s conclusion also shows that there could have been a lot less crises experienced by the librarians if the organizational change would have been differently managed. The results in this study could be used by other library organizations in similar situations.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine how two young adult departments at two public libraries work and what profiles the young adult departments have. To examine the work and profiles at the young adult departments I have used the following questions: What are the ideas about working with young adults? How are the two departments in this study working whit young adults? What or which are the profiles of the young adult departments in this study? To answer the questions above I used a qualitative method based on interviews with the librarians responsible for the young adult departments. To complete the interviews I studied the libraries Internet sites and official documents. The examined departments are located at two city libraries and were chosen manly for their focused age group, 15-25 years and that the departments are well established. To analyse the results I used the theoretic model of Marianne Andersson and Dorte Skot-Hansen about the role of the public library. The model describes library profiles from four perspectives: the library as a cultural centre, a knowledge centre, an information centre and a social centre. I also used previous studies about the work with young adults at public libraries to analyse the results from the empiric studies. The analytical findings show many similarities in young adult services between theory and my study. Marketing, user treatment, user influence, the selection of activities and media and finally co-operation are the five categories in which the libraries focus their work with young adults. This is according to the results from my study and previous studies. The results from the analysis of the departments profiles show that the departments have traces from three of the categories but the main profile of both departments are the departments as a cultural centre.

    Abstract [en]

This Bachelor's thesis seeks to illuminate the onesided cultural leanings in literary translations in libraries. Through semi-structured interviews it seeks to explore the view of librarians on the possibilities and obstructions in providing library users with literature of a wide cultural spectrum. In particular, this paper focuses on the dominance of Anglo-Saxon literature in comparison to literature from other geographical and cultural areas. The paper relies on the field, symbolic capital, consecration and habitus theories created by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu in its attempt to bring light on the workings of translations, marketing and user-requests and their influence on library collections. By comparing the answers from the interviews with these theories it finds that libraries generally try to adapt their collection and modify their purchases of new media to fit their user's requests and needs. It also finds that the users themselves are generally influenced by the media. In other words, while the libraries may try to keep a broad cultural and lingual collection of literature the users do not request non-Anglo-Saxon literature in particular. Therefore it draws the conclusion that more studies are needed on the workings of user requests and on the range of literary translations provided by publishers as well as their exposure in the media.

    Abstract [en]

This report describes the process of developing a website prototype with a focus on User Experience and Information Architecture. The study has been undertaken on behalf of a relatively small interiordesign company, whose business will eventually be transferred from selling products and services in both their physical store and on their website, to selling only on the web. The focus of the study was to investigate the target audience's information and experience needs when visiting the website, which was taken into account in the process of developing a user-centered website prototype. While the maingoal was to create a user-centered website prototype that aimed to promote positive user experiences, another objective was to develop a website that can also maintain the company's corporate identity. The future users of the website were involved during the design process. A semi-structured interview was conducted followed by two user tests, one on the the existing website and one on the produced prototype. Participants were asked to perform tasks while they gave commentary about their reactions and perceptions. The results from the user test show that there is a significant connection between the audience’s experience and their information needs. This in turn also relates to how the target groupexperiences the corporate identity. The results confirm that structure, content and a esthetics aret hree aspects that are inherently linked and important to consider.

    Abstract [en]

This article describes a study that investigated the need for and challenges connected to the establishment of a collaboratory - a sociotechnical forum where information and other resources can be made accessible and used by practitioners within library and information science. In order to identify needs and challenges interviews were carried out with a number of practitioners at a number of different institutions. The results reveal that there is a need for a collaboratory in order to facilitate the sharing of personal knowledge “on demand”. It is of great importance that the collaboratory is well integrated with practitioner’s daily activities.

    Abstract [en]

In 1995 a survey was made at six public libraries in the county of Ostergotland in order to examine the reference service and the use of reference collections. In this paper the methods of the survey are described and the results from two libraries in Norrkoping and Linkoping are being analysed.

In the survey several methods were used. During a fortnight observations were made of the use of reference books by the visitors in the reference section. The books were listed. The librarians work at the information desk were also observed at the same time and the librarians wrote all their transactions down as well as their use of reference tools. Two questionnaires were distributed, one to the visitors at the reference section, one to the visitors at the information desk.

The results in short: The collections of reference books were extensive, old and not so well used. The visitors used these collections more than the librarians (6-7% versus 1-2%). The location of the reference books means much to the use. The users of reference books are

mostly students. There are many questions asked by the visitors and often queus are formed at the information desk . Most questions are simple to solve and depending on diffculties of the visitors to find the books on the right shelves. Both libraries have small assets and shortages in the collections make requested books and subjects hard to find for the visitors. At the information desk there are a lot of other transactions than reference questions like selling, reservations, Pc-help and so on. The librarians used the library catalogue in nearly half of the questions but that was the only reference tool which was used more than marginal. The visitors at the reference desk were mostly students but there were no big differences between students frequency and the general public.

Finally the survey shows that the quality of the reference service can and must be improved. There are needs for organisational changes as well as further education of the staff. The libraries in the survey need to focus on the customer's quality more to improve their reference service.

Electronic Resource Management System in practice: A case study at the European University Institute library2017Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The dynamic and composite character of electronic resources raises challenges of their integration in library collections, impacting and changing traditional work processes. Academic libraries are particularly interested in this transition. Electronic resource management system (ERMS) is software that aims to support the library in the administration of all the phases that compose the complex life cycle of electronic resources, with the aim to rationalize and render their management more efficient. This study aims to advance an understanding of the impact of the introduction of an electronic resource management system in an academic setting. It will consider enabling and constraining factors of this technology in electronic resource management, as well as the influences on work processes of its use. It moreover investigates the challenges posed by its implementation. The study provides a look at these issues from the perspective of social shaping of technology and structuration theories. The study found that the introduction of a new electronic resource management system impacts work organization, workflows and activities, with a tight interconnection between electronic resource management system technology and work processes. The study also reveals how the adoption and integration of a new technology in existing workflows can act as a catalyst for change and as input to review procedures which can become fixed and inflexible.

Prosit!: må det gagna. Verksamhetsutveckling över förvaltningsgränser2010Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis can be split up into three parts. First, to examine if public libraries in Sweden provide a selection of comic books and graphic novels suitable for youths. Second, to seek out how many of those libraries use comic books and graphic novels in their literature promotion with youths. Third, to investigate if there are any connections and similarities between the libraries that do. Also, a hypothesis proclaiming that most libraries do have comic book departments designed for youths and that libraries in big cities use comic books in literature promotion more often than libraries in small cities, is tested in the study.

The results are based on a survey that was distributed to 290 libraries, out of which 192 responded. The results indicate that most libraries have youth departments and departments for comic books but that a small majority, mostly in larger cities, have a comic book department designed to be interesting for youths. A majority of the libraries surveyed have used comic books in some sort of literature promoting activity but there is a clear distinction between libraries in larger cities and libraries in smaller cities where the big city libraries were more likely to have used comic books in their literature promotion. Most of the connections and similarities between libraries working with comic books are connected to the population of the city in which the library is located and with the library's work for youths in general.

    Abstract [en]

Swedish university libraries traditionally collect recreational readingmaterial only to support the teaching and research interests of theirinstitutions. However many university libraries hold a substantial yetunspecified collection of popular fiction. This thesis investigates theextent of these collections and examines academic librarians' viewsabout students' recreational reading in the academic context and theirattitudes towards the role of fiction and of readers' advisory inacademic libraries. The theoretical framework includes literature andresearch about the benefits of reading for pleasure, collections' rolesand readers' advisory strategies. The empirical material was gatheredthrough quantitative surveys sent to academic librarians in Sweden. The results show that academic librarians are positive about thebenefits of recreational reading for university students. However themajority of them do not believe that it is their responsibility to provideleisure reading material or promote extracurricular reading. Based onthe literature review, on the theoretical framework and on the researchfindings, recommendations are made with respect to further researchand readers' advisory strategies.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine school librarians’ external monitoring and cooperation and collaboration with teachers, in order to describe it and examine its significance for the relevance to the profession of librarians. The purpose was also to interpret the meaning of the external monitoring, cooperation and collaboration from a professional perspective. For this we used semi structured interviews and qualitative content analysis. The analysis was based on theory on professions (Nolin, 2008) about lifelong vocational training, cooperation and collaboration. The profession perspective explains problems, difficulties and opportunities that can be seen in school librarians external monitoring and when professions cooperate and collaborate. Our conclusion is that external monitoring is part of the lifelong vocational training and can be seen as a strategy together with cooperation and collaboration with teachers to strengthen, develop and change school librarians knowledge and jurisdiction. The study shows that external monitoring is dependent on cooperation and collaboration with teachers and the other way around. Depending on how developed these strategies are, this will affect both their influence on school library practice and the profession.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The organization of schools in Sweden has recently taken a significant turn toward neo-liberalism whereby educational consumerism and individualism have replaced citizenship and collective democracy as a basic ethos and driving force. A number of elements are involved. In this article we point to a risk of self segregation by means of which economically disadvantaged groups become concentrated in the same schools, within mainly the public sector. This is a particular and complex problem in multi-racial/multi-ethnic migrant intense areas according to previous research that causes these schools to experience serious difficulties when it comes to operating as schools capable of mobilization for full citizenship. We need such schools but there is no evidence that schools are developing in these directions in the neo-liberal era.

New Threats in Advanced Knowledge-Based Economies to the Old Problem of Developing and Sustaining Quality Teacher Education2010Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Certain common elements can be identified regarding teacher education programmes and their development in advanced knowledge-based economies, by which we mean nation states that are thoroughly reliant on knowledge production and communication for economic stability and growth and the smooth running of their institutions. They have their basis in three strongly expressed policy ideas. The first is the recognition that scientific knowledge (i.e. facts and principles that are acquired through the long process of systematic theoretical and empirical inquiry and stringent disciplinary investigation and analysis) is increasingly essential for economic growth and social, technological and cultural development (e.g. SOU 2008:105). The second is a recognition of the relationship between formal education (schooling) and economic production and the third is a recognition of the role of teacher education in respect to this relationship and the value of placing this education inside the modern university.

By examining newspaper articles from two different timeperiods in a public library’s life, specifically the main citylibrary of Gothenburg 1964-68 and 2004-2015, thismaster’s thesis studies the discourse of library practice aswell as its societal role during the building and re-buildingof the library. The empirical material is examined byapplying the discourse theory and method of ErnestoLaclau and Chantal Mouffe. With this methodology wealso aim to analyze how the power is distributed betweenthe different roles that emerge depending on in what waythey speak about or is being spoken of in the material. In the analysis of the material, we have identified severalmore or less dominant discourses that construct certain, and often contradictory, views on the city library’s practiceand role in society. The major discourses that emergedin the material during the 1960’s were the book discourseand the cultural centre discourse. The book discoursepromotes traditional and authoritarian views of themediation and conservation of printed, quality books aswell as being associated with strong ideals of enlightenmentand education. The culture centre discoursepromotes a wide library practice, entailing many differentcultural and political activities as well as a wide range ofpeople. The book discourse can be seen all the waythrough the 2000’s, but the later period is dominated bythe information mediation discourse that places the userand its needs at the core of the library’s mission.

    Abstract [en]

There are many research studies about integration processes but none about user education for immigrants. The aim of this Bachelor´s thesis is to examine how a library in Sweden contributes to the integration of immigrants and how user education for immigrants, organized by the library, is experienced by librarians and students. Diaz theory of five different ways to study integration is applied to the material concerning students’ and librarians’ experiences of user education. Students want more extensive choice of literature in their native language and even more information about Swedish society. The librarians believe they can help immigrants even more in their integration process, but it is difficult because of the limited resources. The students also request activities that can be useful when seeking employment. From the interviews, we can see that the library is working mostly with the social and subjective integration, while they don’t work so much with housing integration.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine how the navigation structure as well as the userexperience of Marknad Varberg's website can be improved, in order for the intended users to find what they seek and feel motivated for entrepreneurship. Using two complementary qualitative methods within user-centered design, this study investigates how the intended users are experiencing the navigation on the current site, as well as the experience of the site’s ability to inspire entrepreneurship, and how each of these can beimproved. Methods used are Usability Test and CardSorting. The result of the study shows that the current navigation system rather worsens than improves navigability, and that the website fails to motivate entrepreneurship. The conclusion reached in this thesis suggests that the information architecture may be improved in terms of logical structure, clearer labeling which corresponds to the content being retrieved and new categories, to create a better navigability. Suggestions are also made on how to improve the site’s ability to inspire entrepreneurship in a specific location, using persuasive web design techniques which allude on designing for persuasion, emotion and trust. The development proposal is presented in the form of low-fidelity prototypes, which aims to illustrate how Marknad Varberg can redesign its current website, to provide their users with an improved user experience and to fulfill one of Marknad Varberg’s own objectives as a municipal establishment: to market and develop Varberg as an attractive municipality to visit, live and operate companies within.

    Abstract [en]

To be able to present its user with personal and relevant content and thus the best user experience, Instagram constantly updates and modifies its algorithms. This bachelor thesis investigates how continuous changes in algorithms on Instagram are affecting the social media strategies and activities for professional account holders such as companies, influencers and other media profiles. To approach the issue, email-based interviews and content analysis have been used as qualitative methods in the study. These two methods have allowed this thesis to examine in what way continuous changes of the algorithms can result in an experience of increased difficulty according to professional account holders in terms of their marketing activity. Aswell, it examines whether the sorting mechanism contributes to a perception of reduced visibility on the platform. The thesis discusses relevant factors to execute marketing activity effectively and successfully on the platform; these factors are summarized into a need for engagement and interaction, visibility and knowledge of the consumer's interaction pattern. How these factors matter is described in the study. After analysis of collected data it was found what account holders consider negative with Instagram’s algorithms, which is answered in this thesis. The result of the study shows that there is a perceived reduction in visibility and increased difficulty for professional account holders in terms of marketing activities. From a larger perspective, the study discusses potential challenges in terms of how algorithms and content filtering can affect the whole field of Information Architecture.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to gain knowledge and examine the ways of how librarians work on promoting children’s and especially boys, in the age of 9-12, reading and literacy. The intention has also been to examine the goals in relation to promoting children’s reading and the choices behind the different methods. The research is founded on qualitative semi-structured interviews with five children’s librarians. Aidan Chambers “The Reading Circle” is used as a tool to analyze the different methods and approaches that librarian’s use in their work to promote reading. “The Reading Circle” consists of four themes, “Selection”, “Reading”, “Response” and “the enabling adult”.The results of this study partly show that all of the librarians acknowledge a shortage of primarily time but also money. They believe that the cooperation with schools is of importance and something they wish to expand. The conclusions are that librarians work with reading promotion is time-consuming. In that aspect they feel that they cannot be enabling adults. Another conclusion we found is that they all felt a strong need to be up to date with new research and applying that research to their own work.

Att iscensätta förändring: Den interna kommunikationens roll i organisationers förändringsbenägenhet2015Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and analyze the role ofcommunication in change processes based on change expertsexperiences. The purpose will be accomplished by answering thefollowing research questions: How can organizations create a highchange readiness? How are leader- and coworkership used as strategicresources in change processes? How does the organizational cultureaffect the planning and implementation of change initiatives? The theoretical framework presented in this paper concludes thatcommunication is important for a successful change initiative and thatchange is consistent in organizations. Therefore it becomes increasinglyimportant for organizations to raise their change readiness in order toconduct successful change initiatives.A qualitative study was conducted with respondents from five Swedishorganizations. The results from the interviews were analyzed andcompared to the theoretical framework. The result of the study showedthat all organizations had a similar approach to change communication. They also predict the same future obstacles and challenges for changecommunication. The study also showed that the organizations use oldercommunication models that don’t take the receivers interpretations intoconsideration. The findings conclude that the organizations can gain a higher changereadiness by focusing on the activities that takes place in between thechanges. The organizations must also develop the necessarycommunication channels that allow the coworker to communicate andthereby strengthening the degree of participation in the change processon their behalf.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis aims to examine how the user experience of a website is affected depending on whether it use a hamburger menu or a drop down menu. Secondly, how efficiently each participant use these menus as well as whether or not the menu they use the most efficiently also is the menu they considers give the best user experience, will be investigated. This study will also explore how the lack of animation used in the menus might affect the user experience. A qualitative method, contextual inquiry, is used to examine the user experience of two prototypes which are designed with either a dropdown menu or a hamburger menu. A structured observation is used to find out which menu the participants use most efficiently. Here the time it takes to complete a task in each prototype will be observed. The two prototypes are both lacking hover-animation. How this shortage of animation might affect the user experience will be examined during contextual inquiry. The results showed that the participants prefered the hamburger menu although most used the drop down menu more efficiently. The lack of animation was affecting the user experience negatively in the drop-down menu but not in the hamburger menu.

    Abstract [en]

People of various cultural and linguistic backgrounds seek refuge in Sweden. Policy documents for public libraries state that prioritized areas of operation are children and young people, but also cultural and linguistic diversity. In recent years, the spatial aspects of library buildings have been the subject of major research, especially in Scandinavia. The purpose of this study is to broaden knowledge of how public libraries can design spaces by considering diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In this study, library spaces for children and young people are researched. The methods applied in this research were semi-structured interviews with librarians; observations in library spaces for children and young people in three public libraries in Västra Götaland, Sweden; and a review of policy documents from these public libraries. The theoretical framework for this research is Hans Elbeshausen's and Peter Skov's "Public libraries in a multicultural space: a case study of integration processes in local communities." Elbeshausen and Skov describe the transnational: how people are linked to two or more cultures. This was the theoretical foundation for the transnational screen, a tool for analysis, in which support of multiculturalism and integration would promote a sound transnational. This tool was used to analyze the results of the observations. Findings indicate that public libraries already support both multiculturalism and integration, which means public libraries also reinforce transnationalism. Using the transnational screen for analysis facilitates practical suggestions for improvement in the operation of public libraries.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how public libraries in Norrbotten provide multilingual media and how the commitment is legitimized. In January 2014 there was a change to the guidelines for the International Library’s service for providing multilingual media. The responsibility for the provision of this service was also changed. The result shows there has been different ways of implementing the guidelines in practice; this has led to inequalities in the local library service. We have assembled data through qualitative interviews with five different public libraries in the north of Sweden. The result has been analyzed thematically based on Dorte Skot-Hansens culture political theory. Our study shows that the way the libraries legitimize their work is basically in the social field with overreaching values as democracy and equality.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to gain greater knowledgeabout some multi-language librarians’ perception of theircompetences in the library activities that are conductedtowards people with other mother tongues than Swedish, inwhat way these competences are gained and whichcompetences they miss. The method that is used to answerthe research questions in the study is semi-structuredinterviews with four public librarians who mainly work withmulti-language activities. Lundmark’s competence model isused together with theory of the competence term to analyzethe collected data. The results that can be drawn is that themulti-language librarians in this study consider manydifferent competences to be needed in the profession, but thatthe formal education, language skills, ability to conductsurrounding analysis, personal and social competences arementioned as very important. The librarians described theirwork tasks and responsibilities as varying, which results in ademand of certain competences. The professionalcompetence is mainly obtained via university studies and canbe updated through both formal and non-formal education.Strategic competence can be further developed throughtraditional courses and regional or local competencedevelopment efforts but also through individual initiatives asnews coverage. Everyone possesses personal and socialcompetences in some form, and these competences are oftendeveloped through experiences in a person’s personal andprofessional life. The different competences are not separatedfrom each other but overlapping and completing each other.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to explore how links and labels are used on the project collaborator’s – Volvo Construction Equipment’s – websites through web analysis tools. Whether there’s a correlation between user’s web behavior and their choice of navigation channel and clicked link label, and what effect placement, label and design have on the conversion rate of a link was explored by using structured observation and a combined field experiment and A/B test. Data was collected using two different web analytics tools (Adobe Analytics and Hotjar). The results showed that there was a statistical relationship between a user’s web behavior and which channel she chose, but no correlation between her web behavior and which link she chose to click. The results also showed that changing a link’s placement, label and design altogether had a synergic effect on the conversion rate of the link, but whether the conversion rate was actually affected by changing only one of these factors could not be determined as the results did not result in a statistical correlation using the chi-square test. In addition to presenting the findings made, a discussion of the study’s implications and how they may have affected the reached results is also presented. Among other things, there were some issues with the web analytics tools used as well as the collected data (e.g., a potential bot was identified on one of the studied sites which affected the structured observation method). Finally, suggestions on further research in the studied area are presented.

    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to evaluate how a website can be improved for a better user experience. The website this study evaluates belongs to a hair salon, which at the time of the study had a design that did not match the appearance of the salon. The problem was that the website did not justify the business of the salon. By using both qualitative and quantitative methods user needs and preferences could be identified to develop a prototype of a new website. The quantitative method used was a survey which provided answers about functionality and preferences. The qualitative method was a Think Aloud test, which was performed in the hair salon, the users were asked to talk about the atmosphere in the salon and compare it to the atmosphere of the website. With the data gathered through these methods we could compile a result and an analysis, which was used to develop a prototype. We found that users tend to value basic information about the hair salon in combination with factors which increase recognition and credibility. The empirical data on functionality and customer experience of the salon allowed us to develop a prototype that meetsuser needs. The aim of the prototype is to reflect the design of the salon on the web.

    Abstract [en]

Organizational changes often fails. The strategic communication has shown to be a key factor for the chance of success. At the same time, the perception of the communication professional is vague and obscure (Heide, 2017; Johansson & Heide, 2008). This study aims to illustrate the communication professional role and work method in organizational change and development processes. Seven qualitative interviews was performed in two organisations, one private and one municipal. The data was analysed through an inductive thematic method. Seven roles that the communication professional adopted during these processes could be identified. The roles was different depending on who initiated the change and in what phase they were involved. Some of the roles was more prominent in the private organisation compared to the municipal organisation. Four challenges and phases that the communication professional encountered was also identified. The result showed that the change process was more likely to succeed if the communication was involved before or in the beginning of the process. If the strategic communication was be planned well, the organisation could be prepared for eventual risks.
