    Abstract [en]

Blockchain has emerged as a prominent and reliable solution that can enable and ensure secure information sharing over wide area networks. In an era of digitalisation, blockchain technology is finding wide applications in multiple fields including implementing traceability in the supply chain. In this direction, this chapter explores its potential application in implementing a blockchain-based traceability system for textile and clothing (T&C) supply chain. It examines the necessity and concept of a traceability system, followed by enlisting advantages of blockchain technology for implementing traceability. Further, a case-based example has been used to explain blockchain application in implementing traceability in T&C supply chain. Finally, it mentions the challenges and limitations of such blockchain-based traceability system that can be addressed through further research.

En historisk studie av pseudosamordning: konstruktionen gå och V i svenskan2018In: Studier i svensk språkhistoria 14 / [ed] Lönnroth, Harry; Haagensen, Bodil; Kvist, Maria; West, Kim Sandvad, Vasa: Vasa University Press , 2018Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article studies a special type of verbal coordination in Swedish, pseudocoordination, which involves two verbs or verb phrases typically combined with och ‘and’. Although it consists of two verbs with a conjunction between them, pseudocoordination in many ways behaves like a subordinating complex-predicate construction. In the literature, pseudocoordination is treated more or less explicitly as a unitary phenomenon, but previous diachronic studies of some types of pseudocoordination point in slightly different directions regarding the origin of pseudocoordinations with different first verbs. It has been claimed that they originate in (canonical) verbal coordinations, but it has also been claimed that they are originally hypotactic structures in which the conjunction is a covert infinitival marker (both are typically pronounced in the same way today). To the best of our knowledge, the gå och V ‘walk/go and V’ construction has not previously been studied both diachronically and corpus-based. By examining gå och V in historical corpora, we therefore add to the historical knowledge of pseudocoordination with gå in Swedish. The gå och V construction is particularly interesting since it has multiple meanings and since it, unlike the bulk of Swedish pseudocoordinations, also has subordination counterparts in Modern Swedish.

Combined gasification-fermentation process in waste biorefinery2018In: Waste Biorefinery: Potential and Perspectives, Elsevier, 2018Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Thermal processes of wastes lead to production of energy in form of electricity and/or heat. However, if the goal is to produce materials, thermochemical processes can be applied. These processes via e.g. gasification produce raw syngas that is a mixture of principally H2, CO and CO2, with some impurities. This raw syngas is traditionally cleaned and catalytically treated via chemical processes such as Fischer-Tropsch. However, as there is a variety of microorganisms that can assimilate syngas, this gas can be used as a substrate to produce different chemicals via biochemical routes. This chapter is dedicated to describe an efficient thermochemical-biochemical route of waste treatment. The gasification process, the design and the factors that affect the syngas composition are firstly described. Thereafter, the microbiology, biochemical reactions, metabolic pathways and process conditions toward production of several metabolic products from syngas such as carboxylic acids, ethanol, butanol, 2,3-butanediol, methane and biopolymers are presented.

New Textile Waste Management Through Collaborative Business Models for Sustainable Innovation2018In: Detox Fashion: Waste Water Treatment / [ed] S.S. Muthu, Singapore: Springer, 2018, p. 81-111Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In most nations, textile waste management is recognized to be a multi-actor system; however most participating actors tend to play a significant role in handling and treating the textile waste single-handedly thus resulting in a very fragmented system fraught with many challenges. In addition, the main textile waste treatment, e.g. in Sweden is still incineration (nearly 55% of per capita disposal) resulting in low degrees of value generation. Nearly 20% of the waste is handled by ten major charities in Sweden. This highlights the necessity for the actors to perform in a network and expand their collaboration, thus move more efficiently towards development of a sustainable value innovation, and find an alternative new way to manage textile waste. Given this our study strives to investigate the challenges and opportunities of implementation of a collaborative business model for sustainable innovation. By taking the benefits of actor-, activity- and value-mapping technique, our study helps in gaining a better realization of the Swedish textile waste management system. The core values of actors have been identified along with the identification of their shared and conflicting values with the aid of a value mapping tool. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews from seven organizations representing the Swedish textile waste man- agement system. Overall our study provides a rich and descriptive picture of the participating actors, their activities, collaboration and value-orientations within the Swedish textile waste management system, and highlights the key drivers of a collaborative solution, viz. legislation, trust and shared understanding and communication, that can be foreseen to increase dialogue and collaboration among actors to support the movement from egocentric to a multi-actor business model. A clear benefit of such collaborative business models is substitution of incineration by higher degrees of reuse of textiles, which has high potential to generate positive environmental impact, through reduction of toxic effects of textile incineration and also new production processes.

Grammaticalization meets Construction Grammar. Opportunities, challenges and potential incompatibilities2018In: Grammaticalization meets Construction Grammar / [ed] Evie Coussé, Peter Andersson, Joel Olofsson, John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2018, Vol. , s. 3-19, p. 1-23Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Grammaticalization research has increasingly highlighted the notion of constructions in the last decade. In the wake of this heightened interest, efforts have been made in grammaticalization research to more precisely articulate the largely pretheoretical notion of construction in the theoretical framework of construction grammar. As such, grammaticalization research increasingly interacts and converges with the emerging field of diachronic construction grammar. This volume brings together articles that are situated at the intersection of grammaticalization research and diachronic construction grammar. All articles share an interest in integrating insights from grammaticalization research and construction grammar in order to advance our understanding of empirical cases of grammaticalization. Constructions at various levels of abstractness are investigated, both in well-documented languages, such as Ancient Greek, Latin, Spanish, German, Norwegian and English, and in less-described languages, such as Manchu and Mongolian.

The Editor in the Interface: Guiding the user through Texts and Images2018In: Digital Scholarly Editions as Interfaces / [ed] Roman Bleier, Martina Bürgermeister, Helmut W. Klug, Frederike Neuber, Gerlinde Schneider, Norderstedt: Institut fur Dokumentologie und Editorik , 2018Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In a way, the Graphical User Interface (GUI) can be regarded as the digital scholarly edition’s new paratext: not exactly part of the edited text itself, it still has an undeniable impact on the way the user reads and understands the edition. This makes the interface an important place for the editor to convey her views on the materials the edition has to other. Therefore, this paper focusses on the role the editor of the digital scholarly edition plays in guiding the user through its data, and helping her shape her interpretation of those data – arguing all the while that it is exactly in the interface that these interactions take place. Starting from Mats Dahlström’s proposal for digital scholarly editors to leave Ariadne threads to guide their users through the textual labyrinth of their digital scholarly editions, this paper suggests that Dante’s Divine Comedy might make a more appropriate allegory for the editorial model. Taking a cue from Dante’s ‘Virgil’ character, the editor may prefer to remain in the background of the edition, encouraging the user to be fully immersed in the edition’s data – only to quietly step more and more in the foreground as the user moves deeper and deeper into the edition and could arguably use more explicit guidance. After taking a more theoretical approach to this topic, the paper illustrates the kind of editorial decisions that may be involved while designing a digital scholarly edition by taking the Beckett Digital Manuscript Project (BDMP) as a case study. Walking the reader through the many tools and functionalities the BDMP has to other, this paper explains how this editorial model would apply to the project, focusing especially on the changes the edition’s graphical user interface underwent as it was redesigned in November 2015.

On researching and teaching Textile Design: examples from the Swedish School of Textiles2018In: Soft Landing / [ed] Nimkurat, N., Raebild, U., Piper, A., Helsinki, Finland: Cumulus International Association of Universities and Collegies in Art, Design, Media , 2018, 3, p. 72-87Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Artistic research in design is relatively new compared to experimental research in the natural sciences but it has matured a great deal over the last decade. Its extensive development has brought new challenges to professional practice, and also raised questions regarding how knowledge should be imparted in academia. By examining the field of textile design, which has traditionally been taught in close synergy with professional practice, we can discern the emergence of doctoral theses that have brought not only new perspectives to textile practice but also a new role to the design educator as a researcher within the academia. One of the challenges that design education program are facing, however, relates to creating a better connection between research and education in order to continually enrich curricula with new developments in the field, so that basic knowledge and novelty can interact. By looking closely at the development of the research environment at The Swedish School of Textiles and the interaction with undergraduate and postgraduate education, this chapter describes how research has informed the development of textile design education.

Empowering ergonomy in workplaces by individual behavior modeling using interactive process mining paradigm2018In: Intelligent Environments 2018 / [ed] Ioannis Chatzigiannakis, Yoshito Tobe, Paulo Novais, Oliver Amft, Amsterdam: IOS Press, 2018, p. 346-354Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Work-related disorders account for a significant part of total healthcareexpenditure. Traditionally muscle-skeletal disorders were predominant as source ofwork absenteeism but in last years work activity-related disorders have increasedremarkably. Too little activity at work, sedentarism, or too much work activity leadsto stress. The individualized behavioural analysis of patients could support ergon-omy experts in the optimization of workplaces in a Healthier way. Process MiningTechnologies can offer a human understandable view of what is actually occurringin workplaces in an individualized way. In this paper, we present a proof of con-cept of how Process Mining technologies can be used for discovering the workerflow in order to support the ergonomy experts in the selection of more accurateinterventions for improving occupational health.

    Abstract [en]

Open access has established itself as an issue that researchers, universities, and various infrastructure providers, such as libraries and academic publishers, have to relate to. Commonly policies requiring open access are framed as expanding access to information and hence as being part of a democratization of society and knowledge production processes. However, there are also other aspects that are part of the way in which open access is commonly imagined in the various policy documents, declarations, and institutional demands that often go unnoticed. This essay wants to foreground some of these issues by asking the overarching question: “If open access and open science are the solutions, then what is the problem they are meant to solve?” The essay discusses how demands to open up access to research align also with processes of control and evaluation and are often grounded in ideas of economic growth as constant acceleration.

Measuring Time: Multilingual Elementary School Students’ Meaning-Making in Physics2018In: Global Developments in Literacy Research for Science Education / [ed] Kok-Sing Tang, Kristina Danielsson, Springer , 2018, p. 167-181Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter presents results from a study aiming at investigating multimodal classroom interaction and its contribution to multilingual students’ meaning-making. The focus is on how science content is elaborated and negotiated through various semiotic resources. Data consist of video and audio recordings and digital photographs from a multilingual elementary school physics classroom during the unit “measuring time.” Theoretically, the project takes its stance in social semiotics and pragmatist theory. Data are analyzed through systemic functional linguistics, multimodal analyses, and Dewey’s principle of continuity. The results reveal that the teacher and the students were engaged in meaning-making activities involving a variety of semiotic resources with a potential to develop multilingual students’ scientific literacy. However, some observations indicate classroom practices that might constitute a hindrance for meaning-making. The study has implications for ways of promoting scientific literacy, including learning science, competent action, and communicating through different modes.

Eco-friendly Denim Processing2018In: Handbook of Ecomaterials / [ed] Leticia Myriam Torres Martínez, Springer Publishing Company, 2018Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The denim sector is booming worldwide, because of the spread of denim culture. All over the world it has brought with it a trend of fast-changing fashion. Denim washing has emerged as one of the important production routes toward meeting the fast-changing demands of the fashion market. There are huge ecological concerns, as this sector is enormous. Approximately 1500 gallons of water is needed to produce 1.5 pounds of cotton to make one pair of jeans. If this continues, soon it will pose a serious problem to drinking water supplies. It is therefore important to study the environmental impact of denim and find alternative processes. This chapter starts by describing the different types of denim washing techniques. In addition, it discusses the environmental impact of denim dry and wet washing techniques, and the importance of environmentally friendly washing techniques. It also describes the latest denim finishing technologies, comparing their impacts on the environment with those of the classic techniques. Further, the environmental aspects of auxiliaries and washing chemicals are reviewed, followed by a discussion of garment washing and finishing processes.

Sustainable Wastewater Treatment Methods for Textile Industry2018In: Sustainable Innovations in Apparel Production / [ed] Subramanian Senthilkannan Muthu, Singapore: Springer Publishing Company, 2018Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

All over the world, environmental considerations are now becoming vital factors during the selection of consumer goods which include textiles. According to the World Bank, 20% of water pollution globally is caused by textile processing, which means that these industries produce vast amounts of wastewater. Generally, these effluents contain high levels of suspended solids (SS), phosphates, dyes, salts, organo-pesticides, non-biodegradable organics, and heavy metals. Increase in water scarcity and environmental regulations has led to textile industries to seek for sustainable wastewater treatment methods which help to reduce their water footprint as well as reduce their operational costs. Therefore, sustainable wastewater treatment could be the best choice for the textile industries with respect to the current issues. So, it is important to discuss and champion awareness mechanisms which help to reduce the current issues with respect to the textile wastewater. Therefore, this chapter intends to discuss the various sustainable wastewater treatments, namely granular activated carbon (GAC), electrocoagulation (EC), ultrasonic treatment, an advanced oxidation process (AOP), ozonation, membrane biological reactor (MBR), and sequencing batch reactor (SBR).

    Abstract [sv]

Practice Architectures and Being Stirred into Academic Practices of a Research Group2018In: Education in an era of schooling: Critical perspectives of Educational Practice and Action Research. A Festschrift for Stephen Kemmis / [ed] Christine Edwards-Groves, Peter Grootenboer, Jane Wilkinson, Singapore: Springer, 2018, 1st, p. 167-181-Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter uses the theory of practice architectures to show how particular kinds of arrangements can make particular kinds of academic practices possible. It does this by exploring the authors’ experiences of being stirred in to practices of academia within a particular practice landscape as part of a research group, and the arrangements that enabled and constrained that stirring in. Employing an auto-ethnographic approach, the authors draw on their individual and collective experiences of research and collaboration with Stephen Kemmis and encounters with the theory of practice architectures. Individual narratives are analysed to identify key cultural-discursive, material-economic and social-political arrangements that prefigured our being stirred in, a process which has led to deep and long-lasting research collaborations and commitments that have strong and enduring local and international ties. In sharing our analysis and narratives, we provide a glimpse of how these collaborations and commitments, and the theory of practice architectures (itself a prefiguring arrangement of our practices) have influenced our research into practice in our respective fields. Our discussion offers insights not only into the kinds of practice architectures that make up a university landscape, but also how conditions of possibility can be created for academic practices that resist the de-professionalising effects of troubling university conditions.

Dialog och ungas delaktighet: exemplet Socialt hållbart Falköping2018In: Interkulturell dialog - teori och praktik / [ed] Rasoul Nejadmehr, Göteborg: Västra Götalandsregionen , 2018, 1, p. 227-249Chapter in book (Refereed)
