Durability control by means of hygrothermal history in building components2002Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

During the last few years, many houses in Sweden have had problems with the so-called Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). People become sick because of the indoor climate, with health hazards like asthma, allergies among other problems. These problems can for instance be caused by durability failures in a wall structure. If the mass content in a wall structure is increasing from year to year, due to moisture accumulation in the wall structure or reach too high levels, the building component can cause health hazard for the inhabitants for instance due to mould growth in the building envelope (Hagentoft 1998, Samuelson, 1985). To prevent these problems from occurring it is of great importance to estimate the risks already in the design stage. One way of getting these estimations is by simulations using accurate material properties and accurate in- and outdoor conditions (Harderup 1998). For the engineers a design tool, which easily shows the advantages and disadvantages of a certain structure, can help predicting service life and durability. This paper shows a method to support the prediction of service life and/or to make durability checks on a multi-layered building component. The indoor and outdoor climate, the design of the building structure and the material properties, govern the hygrothermal behaviour of a building component. This study will provide a method of how to show hygrothermal stresses required to determine the durability of building component or/and material layers in the structure.

Sammanfattning av tidigare mätningar av fukt- och temperaturförhållanden för trä i klimatskärmen2009Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The report is a summary of earlier measurements of moisture and temperature measurement in the building envelope. The content is based on an overview of research reports, scientific papers and conference papers in the field of building physics. The main purpose is to get an understanding for the moisture- and temperature conditions for wood in the building envelope. Another purpose is to identify the need of additional measurements in laboratory and in field. The report is a deliverable in project WPB Exposure of wood in the building envelope. This project is part of WoodBuild, a research programme within the Sectoral R&D Programme 2006-2012 for the Swedish forest-based industry. This Programme is jointly funded by the government, industry and other stakeholders with interests related to the Swedish forest-based industry.

Probabilistic Analysis of Indoor Surface Hygrothermal Conditions Accounting for Thermal and Hygric Memory of the Building Component2004Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A new approach to address the memory effects of the building component is demonstrated in the paper. As an output of the analysis, the probability distribution for the surface temperature and relative humidity is given, which is interesting for the determination of both thermal comfort and the risk of mold formation. Three different wall constructions are used in the example. The paper presents two calculation procedures. The first procedure is the probabilistic approximation based on the wall surface dynamic response (DTN model) to the external and internal climatic load. The probability distributions of moisture and thermal parameters, as well as a reliability analysis of the moisture performance of the walls, are carried out using FORM (firstorder reliability method). The results are then compared with the results obtained from the second procedure. In this, a transient one-dimensional HAM model is used for the calculation of the hygrothermal surface conditions, followed by a statistical analysis of the output.

An example of application of limit state approach for reliability anlysis of moisture performance of a building component2004Inngår i: Journal of Thermal Envelope and Building Science, ISSN 1097-1963, E-ISSN 1530-8073, Vol. 28, nr 1, s. 9-26Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Application of limit state approach for the reliability analysis of building performance in the context of building physics characteristics is presented. Analysis of the probability of surface condensation on windows carried out on the basis of statistical description of the climatic parameters and the moisture production is shown as an example of application of this technique for reliability analysis of moisture performance of a building component. The first-order reliability method (FORM) is employed to estimate the probability of performance failure. The results of probabilistic approximations are verified with the help of statistical analysis of the results obtained from deterministic simulations.
