    Abstract [en]

    Background Mixed breeding systems with extended clonal phases and weak sexual recruitment are widespread in nature but often thought to impede the formation of discrete evolutionary clusters. Thus, cyclic parthenogens, such as cladocerans and rotifers, could be predisposed to “species problems” and a lack of discrete species. However, species flocks have been proposed for one cladoceran group, Eubosmina, where putative species are sympatric, and there is a detailed paleolimnological record indicating a Holocene age. These factors make the Eubosmina system suitable for testing the hypotheses that extended clonal phases and weak sexual recruitment inhibit speciation. Although common garden experiments have revealed a genetic component to the morphotypic variation, the evolutionary significance of the morphotypes remains controversial. Methodology/Principal Findings In the present study, we tested the hypothesis of a single polymorphic species (i.e., mixing occurs but selection maintains genes for morphology) in four northern European lakes where the morphotypes coexist. Our evidence is based on nuclear DNA sequence, mitochondrial DNA sequence, and morphometric analysis of coexisting morphotypes. We found significant genetic differentiation, genealogical exclusivity, and morphometric differentiation for coexisting morphotypes. Conclusions We conclude that the studied morphotypes represent a group of young species undergoing speciation with apparent reproductive barriers despite coexistence in the freshwater pelagic zone.

    Innovation community governance The case of Skåne Food Innovation Network2010Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The aim of the paper is to investigate the emerging and subtle role of the intermediaries or knowledge brokers and how to increase the learning and development of the innovation intermediaries with a governance perspective. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is the elaboration of the Mintzberg idea of rebuilding companies as communities to foster innovation in communities by using specially designed meeting format called systemic meeting. Findings – There are emerging patterns of the firms creating value networks to accelerate innovation and share knowledge. Intermediaries or knowledge brokers acting as an interface between seekers and solvers will need different mindset or approach to innovation with more of governance perspective than that of government. Originality/value – This paper extends the understanding of the intermediaries and proposed a new systemic approach to the Innovation intermediaries.

    The significant potential for so-called “smart textiles” in the design of the next generation of devices that measure pressure, tension, moisture, and heat at the humanehorse interface is discussed in this article. Research techniques from theoretical and experimental physics laboratories, combined with wireless technology, can be readily adapted to measure and store metrics for numerous variables in equine structure and function. Activities, such as breathing, the extension and flexion of joints, limb kinematics, and cardiac function, can be logged as indicators of physiological and behavioral conditioning (training). Such metrics may also, one day, support veterinary diagnostics but also play a role in safeguarding sporthorse welfare, especially in elite contexts where the horse may be pushed to its functional limits. As such, they are likely to emerge as an area of great interest to equitation and welfare scientists. It is important to note that smart textiles sense and react to exogenous stimuli via integrated sensors. So, beyond the equitation science laboratory, the emergence of polymers and smart materials may enhance the effectiveness of, or challenge us to completely rethink, traditional items of saddlery, thus improving equitation. The integration of smart textiles in all sorts of extant and emergent equipment for everyday equestrians could, in the future, lead to equipment that responds appropriately to the demands of equitation in its various forms. Rethinking equitation through physics and the use of smart textiles seems to have merit in that it is a novel means of both investigating and addressing problems that compromise the welfare and performance of horses. The purpose of this article is to envision the use of smart textiles in research, clinical, equestrian, and horse care contexts.

    The impact of electrostatic air cleaning in free-ranging egg production2014Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    The development of a patented polymer based electron emitting technology (EAC) has provided a means to study the impact of reduced bioload in stable air on productivity. Apart from capturing particles in a negatively charged electrostatic field operating over the entire stable with hundreds of meters of emitting structure, the electrons combine with oxygen and vapor to produce H2O2 to block mould metabolism. Before and after data from three egg producing farms with 20-50 000 free-roaming layers were collected as part of their standard productivity control. The number of mould colonies decreased from >7 (range 7 – 30) to single colonies. Lay percentage over the production period covering 22 to 75 weeks of age increased by 3% and the feed conversion improved by 9%. During the last 10 production weeks, the overall improvement in productivity was 27% enabling the farmers to maintain a high productivity despite an ageing population of layers.
