    Abstract [sv]

    Arbetsmotivation är ett ämne inom arbetsvetenskapen som vi anser intressant att få en djupare förståelse kring. Vi har genomfört en kvalitativ studie utifrån ett fenomenologiskt perspektiv. Syftet var att ta del av respondenternas subjektiva livsvärldar och undersöka hur medarbetare på ett serviceföretag motiveras i sitt dagliga arbete samt att fånga upp ifall det finns motiverande omständigheter som saknas. Vi valde att använda oss av ett hälso- och skönhetsföretag som utmärks av arbetsförhållanden som långa arbetsdagar, obekväma arbetstider och en stressig arbetsmiljö.

    Vi samlade in vår empiri genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med sju medarbetare på vårt aktuella företag. Resultaten visar att medarbetarna ser faktorer som samhörighet mellan kollegor, meningsfulla arbetsuppgifter, personligt intresse i yrket samt ledarskapet på företaget som mycket viktiga för arbetsmotivationen. De faktorer som medarbetarna saknade i sitt dagliga arbete var uppskattning, både personlig och materiell, delaktighet i arbetet, kollektiva prestationsmål och kompetensutveckling.

    Vi diskuterar vårt resultat utifrån; Herzbergs tvåfaktorsteori, Maslows behovshierarki, Hackman & Oldhams motivationsteori, samt Deci och Ryans Self Determination Theory. Vi använder oss även av tidigare forskning ut förd av Wiley, Achim, Dragolea, Bălan, Grant, Basford och Offermann.

    Slutsatsen från vår studie är bland annat att det inte är stora och kostsamma belöningar som motiverar medarbetarna i det dagliga arbetet, utan ett enkelt tack räcker långt.

    Abstract [en]

    The telecom industry is characterized by a stressful work environment and high employee turnover. High employee turnover does not only contribute to high economic costs, but also to a low level of work ethic among employees. Therefore, we found it interesting to investigate how the employees of a telecom company experience leadership in the organization. Furthermore, the study aimed to investigate how the employees experience the demands, control and social support at their workplace and how they relate to the company's employee turnover. The study is of empirical nature and the methodological starting point was to make a qualitative study with an abductive approach. The data collection method used was semi structured interviews. The results show that the employees experience several different types of leadership, of which the democratic leadership style is the most appreciated. Including, supporting and showing empathy are three key qualities demanded by employees. Furthermore, the employees experience that the work is characterized by high demands, low control and low social support from managers and organizations.

    Abstract [en]

    In society today, foreign-born individuals suffer from often having worse position on the labor market than persons belonging to the majority population. The problem is a fairly well known phenomenon and consists of difficulties for foreign-born individuals to enter the Swedish labor market or that they have worse labor conditions than Swedish-born individuals. Some previous studies demonstrate differences in salaries and positions but there are not as many studies that reflect what these differences mean for the individual at specific workplaces. Thereby it is important to highlight the foreign-born individuals working conditions at the workplace level and explore other areas of concern, for example, career opportunities, instability of work and internal training.

    The purpose of this study is to examine how foreign-born with southern European background experience their work situation and their experiences of development work. The study is based on ten semi-structured interviews. The results show that the respondents perceive some barriers in their work. The results also show that respondents' perception of development in their work differ in marked differences between men and women. The results are analyzed and discussed on the basis of Tilly's theory of permanent inequality, intersectional perspectives and structural discrimination theory.

    Abstract [en]

    Our   changing   society influence   and   challenge the   way   of   working and   organizing work. Many organizations change the office environment and the work concept in order to create a  more  supporting  workplace. A  growing  office trend  is the  concept  activity based working, henceforth called ABW. The work concept means a paperless office, designed in different  zones customized  to  suit the needs of employees. The employees  have no  fixed seats,  instead  they are  encouraged  to  choose  workstation  based  on  the  assignment.  The concept aims  to inspire and  promote collaboration  and  innovation,  but  also to  increase profitability.  

    The study,  which  is  based  on a qualitative approach,  aims  to  explore how employees in the organization perceive that the physical and psychosocial work environment is affected by working activity based and which factors in the changed way of working that leads to increased or decreased perceived health and job satisfaction. The study shows that the physical environment has a strong positive impact on employees' perceived job satisfaction but  that  the  activity  based  working  in  itself  not  always  is  perceived  as  positive.  The employees did not fully utilize the activity based working concept as it is supposed and the different office zones are often perceived as non-functional. The main reasons for why the physical and psychosocial work environment is perceived as impaired are partly that the employees do not have their own seats, partly the reduced possibilities to gather the whole group. The conclusion is that good health and job satisfaction is more easily achieved if considering the employees individual conditions as well as ability and willingness to handle the changes that the new way of working means. Since the knowledge about the advantages and disadvantages of the concept, as well as it’s impact on employees' physical and psychological health is limited, we believe our study to be of value. Through improved knowledge  and  understanding the  opportunities  to  create  a  more  sustainable  worklife increases.

    Utmattningssyndrom är ett fenomen som först 2004 klassificerades som en sjukdom i Sverige. Statistik visar att 36 500 personer drabbas av utmattningssyndrom varje år i vårt land. Tidigare forskning visar att det finns fysiska och psykiska orsaker som påverkar sjukdomsbilden. Utöver dessa orsaker finns även social påverkan och samhällsnormer som bidrar till att en individ drabbas av utmattningssyndrom. Men framförallt är det arbetet och omgivningens påverkan som ses som den största bidragande orsaken till sjukdomen. Vi har därför genomfört en kvalitativ studie med fenomenologisk ansats i form av semistruktuerade intervjuer, i syfte av att undersöka hur personer med en sjukdomshistoria av utmattningssyndrom ser på sjukdomen och vad de anser orsakade den.

    Vårt resultat visar på att respondenterna upplevde utmattningssyndrom som påfrestande och att kraven i arbetslivet kombinerat med kraven i privatlivet framhölls som en av de viktigaste orsaken till sjukdomen. Intervjupersonerna upplevde att det var påfrestande att träffa nya människor samt att arbetsgivaren inte gav det stöd i den utsträckning som våra respondenter behövde. Behovet av stöd från sin arbetsgivare samt sin omgivning var den tydligaste upplevelsen bland våra intervjupersoner. Samhällssynen och samhällsnormer om att individen alltid ska prestera, att ständigt vara glada och tillmötesgående kan vara en bidragande orsak till sjukdomen. Studien visar på att arbetsgivaren bör ta ett större ansvar och fungera som ett bra stöd för att en individ som drabbats av sjukdomen ska komma tillbaka till arbetet fortare och på ett bra sätt. Stödet från övriga omgivningen påverkar deras sjukdomsbild, där ett bra stöd resulterade i en snabbare rehabilitering för respondenterna. För att omgivningen ska kunna fungera som ett bra stöd krävs det att samhället tar sjukdomen på allvar.

    Bakgrund: De senaste åren har medellivslängden i Sverige ökat och resurser har tilldelats äldre med behov av mer omfattande vårdinsatser. Kommunal sektor har även senaste åren genomgått stora omvandlingar, ett beställar-utförarsystem återfinns likväl som starka influenser från New public management skådas i verksamheterna. Samtidigt råder det personalbrist och svårigheter i att rekrytera utbildad personal på grund av dåliga arbetsvillkor. Liknande tendenser finns inom Vård- och äldreförvaltningen Borås Stad som har svårt att få sina enhetschefer att stanna.

    Syfte: Syftet med studien är att utifrån enhetschefers upplevelser skapa förståelse för deras arbetssituation och vad som ligger till grund för deras val att avsluta sin tjänst inom Vård- och äldreförvaltningen i Borås Stad (VÄF).

    Teoretisk bakgrund: I denna studie har Karaseks krav-, kontroll- och stödmodell använts. Resultatet har även analyserats utifrån New public management.

    Metod: Forskningsstudien bygger på sju kvalitativa intervjuer av enhetschefer inom Vård och Äldreförvaltningen som valt att avsluta sina tjänster.

    Resultat: I resultatet skapas förståelse för enhetschefernas påverkansmöjlighet på den operativa verksamheten och dess positiva upplevelse som detta genererar. Något som framkommer är dock att mål och värderingar i organisationen inte alltid förankras i verksamheten, något som leder till frustration. Även förhastade implementeringar som inte grundats skapar irritation. Utöver detta beskrivs låg kontroll och höga krav på en budget i balans som en stressor hos enhetscheferna. Det påtalas även att behovet av stöd från verksamhetschefen varierar likväl som möjligheten till en fullständig introduktion skiljer sig respondenterna åt. Orsakerna till val om avslutad tjänst för utvalda respondenter kan härledas till låga lönenivåer, stress, budgetansvar, personalansvar, ständig närvaro samt avsaknad av stöd och återkoppling.

    Diskussion: I diskussionen förs ett resonemang gällande hur NPM kommit att påverka VÄF och den arbetssituation enhetscheferna ställts inför. Borås Stads tydliga fokus på en budget i balans och intäktsfinansiering ställs i relation till krav-, kontroll- och stödmodellen. Implementeringar som inte förankrats i verksamheten och ospecificerade mål kopplas till den klämda position enhetscheferna ställs inför. Orsaksfaktorer till val om avslutad tjänst analyseras utifrån krav-, kontroll- och stödmodellen.

    Abstract [en]

    The overall objective of this thesis is to describe and explain how different quality management philosophies can be combined in the supply/demand chain, in order to contribute to its resilience. The analysis is both quantitative and qualitative, based on theory and literature related to TQM, Lean, Agile and Six Sigma, one literature study and three case studies that were performed in companies. The studies are related to four research questions and are presented in four papers. The first research question focuses on similarities and differences between the quality management concepts TQM, Lean and Six Sigma. The findings were that TQM, Six Sigma and Lean have many similarities, but they differ in some areas. For examples Lean addresses process flow and waste, whereas Six Sigma addresses variation and design. The conclusion is that there is a lot to gain if organisations are able to combine these three concepts, as they are complementary. Two case studies and a literature survey supported the findings. The second research question focuses on outcomes in a logistics process if using quality management. The findings were that the quality management approach leads to risks being mitigated, managed and monitored and ensures a more effective, robust and flexible process, very much in line with the Agility philosophy. Solutions for quicker response to customers have also been introduced. The findings were supported by two case studies in seven companies. The third research question focuses on how prepared the transport- and logistics-oriented companies are for the application of quality concepts and quality management philosophy. The findings were that they can be described as being TQM-oriented. The companies do not consider Lean and Six Sigma to be future trends. Focus is on the customer, while they do not focus on variations or removing waste. The findings were supported by a case study in 24 companies. The fourth research question focuses on how quality concepts can contribute to risk control and resilience in an organisation. A combined Lean/Six Sigma approach by using Six Sigma framework and the last phase, Perfection, in the Lean concept, implies that the companies’ resilience, due to their strengthened ability to handle variability, risk management and agility, was improved. The findings were supported by two case studies in seven companies.

    Abstract [en]

    The length and complexity of the supply chain tend to increase, rather than diminish, thereby making the supply chain riskier and less predictable and, hence, more vulnerable. At the same time, customers are becoming increasingly demanding. The challenge to businesses today is to create a resilient supply chain in order to manage and mitigate risk and vulnerability. The purpose of the thesis is to explore, describe and develop the use of a combined quality management philosophy in logistics processes in order to improve supply chain resilience. The findings are supported by six studies, which are presented here in six papers. The studies show that there is a lot to gain if organisations are able to combine quality management philosophies, as they are complementary to one another. TQM places its strongest emphasis on the commitment and involvement of all employees. Lean is a discipline that focuses on process speed and removal of waste in order to increase customer value. Six Sigma benefits from an added focus on variability and design of products/services and processes. It has been indicated that a combined quality management philosophy makes the logistics processes more reliable, flexible, agile and robust while reducing cost. The companies’ risk awareness has increased and their risk management has been improved, thanks to the Six Sigma training programmes and philosophy. Using a combined quality management philosophy, the speed of production could be increased, and the responsiveness and flexibility could be improved, which means quicker response to changes. It has also been indicated that a combined quality management philosophy improves the companies’ resilience, due to their increased agility and strengthened ability to handle variability and risk management. Quality management tools can be very effective in the companies’ efforts to control supply chain risk and to identify risk sources of variation, even outside the focal company. In Six Sigma projects, the root cause of variation is often found outside the focal companies, which requires more collaboration in the supply chain. However, if the companies that use a combined quality management philosophy intend to become more resilient, they must involve suppliers and customers more in their own processes and design products/services and processes together. Collaboration with the suppliers and customers and the notion of how to extend a combined quality management philosophy outside the focal company are of importance in order to make the whole supply chain resilient. This could lead to a problem, especially since the conditions for transport and logistics in regards to the application of quality methods and tools represent a large area, unexploited by the companies. On the other hand, Six Sigma has standardised training courses, and it has been demonstrated how a Six Sigma framework can enable collaboration across companies’ boundaries in the supply chain, with the use of Six Sigma training and the DMAIC-roadmap as a common platform. Even if a combined quality management philosophy is effective and efficient, the companies must re-invest in additional methods, tools and strategies to make the entire supply chain resilient. It could be this re-investment in risk prevention and mitigation solutions that enables faster process responsiveness, the establishment of a risk management culture by creating common values, culture and rules in the supply chain and the use of logistics strategies and methods.

    TPM in a Lean office environment can create values both in a business and an employee dimension. In the employee dimension TPM reduces the risk of missing/forgetting areas of responsibility and creates more involvement. In the business dimension objectives such as cost, quality and supporting the reduction of waste improved. Preventive maintenance meetings can be included and performed once a month in the ordinary departmental “stand-up meetings”. Methods like 5S, which need to be updated on a continuous basis, and standardized maintenance should also be connected to the TPM work. But first all employees should be trained in order to have the same direction/behavior.

    Purpose: Much research has addressed how to implement lean in a focal company, but little has been published about how to integrate suppliers in strategies and the focal company’s culture, such as lean production or lean thinking. The purpose of the article is to investigate if suppliers can become more integrated in the supply chain by training in lean thinking at the focal company and to explain a possible structure of the training. Design/methodology/approach: A multiple-case study has been conducted of the focal com- pany and five of its supply companies. The findings are supported empirically by on-site interviews and by observations, as well as by a binomial two-proportion test that was used to analyse the statistical data of the delivery precision. Findings: While the training programme does not show a conclusive result for the supply chain, it has made a difference for all participating suppliers. In most cases the training programme was a trigger that started or boosted the internal work with continuous improvements. In some cases it helped create structured ways of working and improved the internal production flows.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate what experienced professional engineers value regarding work related factors and what makes them stay in an employment and in an organization.

    Theory: The theory used is derived from relevant research regarding work life science and was divided into several parts. The first part contains research about Employer Branding and how employers can use strategies to attract candidates and retain current employees. The second part concerns turnover intentions which is used to examine whether there are relationships between work-related factors that professional engineers believe they have in their workplace and their intentions to stay. The third part embraces Model of retention which contains eight work-related factors which are divided into organizational- and job level. These eight work-related factors shows to have impact on retention of professional workers. Some items were added from Bloom Live Connect Grow Employer Branding framework to complete the ability to measure retention levels. At last we used theory regarding employee engagement to predict the target group’s engagement level to see if it had significant impact on retention of experienced professional engineers.

    Methodology: A cross-sectional quantitative approach was used in this study and a questionnaire was sent out to 301 experienced professional engineers that had an employment within a global industrial enterprise. Approximately 158 experienced professional engineers completed the survey which lead to a responding frequency of 52,5 % percent.

    Findings: The result of the study showed that almost all 26 items tested out of Model of retention scored high means. Therefore they proved to be important for the maintenance of professional engineers to make them want to remain in an employment and in an organization. The only work-related factor that showed statistical significance from the regression analysis performed was compensation. Another interesting disclosure found was that the target group proved to be engaged, but nevertheless, there was a greater intention to leave than to remain in the workplace.

    Practical implications: It is important for employers to pay attention to the results of this study when shaping workforce strategies to become competitive as an employer.

    Social implications: Engineers are a sought-after target group in the labor market and therefore it is important for employers and HR-departments to work with strategies regarding remaining valuable competences such as experienced professional engineers to ensure the future of the organization.

    Context: Sick leave is a measurement of sustainability and the number of actors/participants involved are many. The actors work toward the same goal, but use different methods to reach that goal. As international research focuses more on collaboration between employer and the health care, it is interesting to raise the knowledge about how HR works with the return to the work from long-term sick leaves, in a Swedish context.

    Objective: This study researches the work regarding employees long term sick leaves, from the HR perspective, on how they work to retain an employee after a long term sick leave and how the collaboration looks like between HR, company healthcare and the Swedish social insurance agency (Försäkringskassan).

    Method: A qualitative interview guide was created for HR-representatives with questions regarding the return to workplaces. Six HR-representatives from six large private companies were interviewed for the study.  

    Results: Most of the HR-representatives worked in similar ways with the return to work from a sick leave. Differences occurred primarily depending on which type of working position the HR-representatives  were  working  towards.  The  view  of  the  collaboration  between  the company healthcare and Försäkringskassan were similar.

    Conclusion: HR works primarily with preventing that health issues arise. During the sick leave period they primarily work with various forms of adaption if possible. The dialogue is in focus to avoid that the employee enters a new sick leave after returning to work. The collaboration with the company healthcare happens on the directives of the employer, and the collaboration with Försäkringskassan is in some cases tense.

    Högre utbildning har under längre tid diskuterats i relation till arbetsmarknaden, där kraven på anställningsbarhet under det senaste decenniet blivit mer uttalat. Dock ifrågasätts högskoleutbildningens utformning och dess relevans för arbetslivet, då mycket av undervisningen fokuserar på abstrakta teorier istället för konkreta metoder. Detta dilemma dyker även upp inom de utbildningar som ska forma personalvetare. Intresset i denna studie mynnade därför ut i att undersöka lärares samt studenters förväntningar och upplevelser av utbildningsinnehåll och anställningsbarhet inom ett personalvetarprogram.

    Vår studie baseras på åtta intervjuer, fyra stycken inom respektive grupp, och visar att studenterna i regel har ett mer kortsiktigt perspektiv på vad personalvetarutbildningen önskas resultera i, där det finns en önskan och förväntning om att undervisningen ska vara mer praktisk. Detta resultat ligger i linje med våra föreställningar och den tidigare forskning som vi tagit del av. Lärarna däremot har ett mer långsiktigt perspektiv där utbildningen genom sin teoretiska anknytning ska leda till personlig utveckling samt kritiska reflektioner. Personlig utveckling i form av ökade allmänna kunskaper framkom överraskande nog även hos studenterna, dock inte lika tydligt. Slutligen kunde en tydlig koppling mellan anställningsbarhet och högre utbildning urskiljas, där begreppen samspelar med varandra. Utbildning uttrycks vara det mest centrala i anställningsbarhet då individen därigenom erhåller viktiga kompetenser och färdigheter för det kommande arbetslivet. Andra faktorer som framkom vara viktiga för en individs anställningsbarhet sammanfattas i kategorierna arbetslivserfarenhet, relevanta kompetenser samt personliga egenskaper.

    Traditionally, mail order and e-commerce organisations view the consumers as one entity, meaning there is no differentiation of service. Research has shown that return levels depend on both age and lead-time, and consequently end user requirements are of great interest. This study investigates expected lead-time service requirements of one organisations mail order/e-commerce customers and measures the gap between the expected and the specified service. A case study was performed with one of the leading Swedish mail order/e-commerce organisations. The descriptive study combined qualitative and quantitative data answering questions regarding the consumer’s requirements and how they vary depending on age. This research is based on primary data from a customer survey with answers from more than 6 000 respondents. The proposition that the gap between specified and expected customer service requirements varies with age and lead-time was supported, thus indicating that mail order and e-commerce organisations should work closer with their customers. They should likely segment their customers and differentiate their service delivery. The presented research results describe what service requirements regarding lead-time are, and how they vary with age for customers of one organisation. There is a gap between the customers’ service requirements and the service specified/delivered by the case organisation and the gap varies with age as proposed. The only normative statement is that close cooperation between the case organisation and its customers is vital. How customers should be categorized and how to differentiate the service delivery will be topics of further research.

    This study has been made to see how a participatory model of municipal activities works in practice and whether the main purpose, to give users greater influence and a greater participation  is achieved in reality.  This  is  because the  model's  design  as  a  bottom -up perspective, where users themselves should have the opportunity to influence and to feel involved in their everyday lives. Even though the research about the participation model is limited the scientists agree that there is a problem about the behavior and communication to the clients, this will require training of staff and counselors. We have used a qualitative method of semi-structured interviews based on a phenomenological perspective. Study participants are managers, staff and counselors from local government activities in the Västra Götaland region, and they work with clients who have disabilities. The theories we have used is Habermas's communication theory and Foucault's power theory.

    Questions that respondents did reflect on included their views on the participation of the clients and if they experienced any change in the approach towards clients. We also had an interest in finding out whether it is the users themselves who should determine what themes they considered relevant to be involved in and if the decisions they make actually give effect. The approach we have assumed has been critical and of focus on dialogue, power and hidden power. What has emerged in the results is that the model has contributed to a changed approach of the staff. The power has been shifted between staff and clients. As we have problematized the discussion, all interviewees believe in the model but fear that the model will not be continued and only be a temporary activity.

    Följande undersökning har utgått från ett kvalitativt metodval med semistrukturerade intervjuer. Den är genomförd utifrån ett fenomenologiskt perspektiv, har kodats efter marginalmetoden, analyserats genom ad hoc och tolkats utifrån en hermeneutisk ansats. Deltagarna som gav undersökningen dess karaktär var Sandra, Emelie, Johanna, Erik, Jonathan och Kalles subjektiva uppfattning av undersökningens fenomen. Syftet med undersökningen var att belysa vilka strategier de använder för att göra sig anställningsbara.

    Teorier som undersökningen bygger på är Bourdieus kapital, habitus och fält; Granovetters betydelse av kontaktnät och Goffmans framträdande. Undersökningens resultat visar att deltagarnas strategier för att finna jobb är via kontakter och jobbförmedlingssajter. För att få ett jobb, förutsätter deltagarna att man har kontakter, utbildning och arbetslivserfarenhet. Strategierna för att behålla jobbet är främst att hålla sig attraktiv på arbetsplatsen genom bra prestation och god attityd. Strategier när deltagarna söker jobb är i allmänhet att hålla sig förberedda, anpassa sig och agera förebyggande utifrån enskild situation. Arbetsmarknaden upplevs generellt av deltagarna som hård i den bemärkelsen att det är svårt att få jobb, framförallt för dem utan utbildning och arbetslivserfarenhet. Deltagarna upplever överlag att deras egna möjligheter till att få ett arbete är goda.

    Globalization and the outside world's influence on modern organizations have created new demands and goals for our Swedish employers. Flexibility and rapid changes demand that today's employers must be well-suited for change. This in turn means that the employee must also be ready to meet similar requirements. New technology and new ways of working have given the modern office worker a daily life that can be completely paperless and because of this the employee isn't linked to one specific workstation. The key reason for to the new way of working is to increase profitability, but benefits such as increased creativity and increased cooperation among employees are highlighted as benefits from the employer. This study is based on a qualitative approach. The aim of the study was to capture the employees experiences of working activity-based. The study does not intend to explain whether this new way of working is good or bad for the employee, but only for the purpose of capturing their experience. The study shows that the overall experience of working activity-based is good, but that experiences vary between different individuals. The conclusion is that employees need to have the feeling of being able to control their everyday lives and opportunities to choose the right place for the right task for this work method to be experienced well. The value of this research lies in the fact that because employee experience is something that has not been the center of the research before, and we need to know more about the effects of this increasingly popular way of designing modern offices. If we capture the employee's experience of working in this environment, we can more easily understand how it is perceived and better conditions improve the working environment in the long term in a society that continually places new demands on organizations and employee's.

    Dagens arbetsmarknad präglas av flexibla arbeten där hög tillgänglighet utgör en naturlig del av arbetet. Med hjälp av kommunikationsteknologin kan individer utföra arbetsuppgifter på valfri tid och plats vilket innebär att individerna kan vara tillgängliga i högre utsträckning än förr. Den ökade tillgängligheten i arbetslivet samt teknikens utveckling har bidragit till att gränserna mellan arbete och fritid suddats ut; ett gränslöst arbete har uppstått. I denna kvalitativa studie har egenföretagare och rekryterare intervjuats i syfte att undersöka varför individer väljer att vara tillgängliga för arbete utanför ordinarie arbetstid samt vilka konsekvenser denna tillgänglighet bidrar till. Vidare har även studien undersökt i vilken utsträckning tillgängligheten påverkar individernas möjlighet att kunna balansera arbetslivet och privatlivet. För att kunna svara mot studiens frågeställningar har olika teoretiska utgångspunkter tillämpats i form av krav- och kontrollmodellen, självuppfyllande profetia samt copingstrategier. Detta har sedan ställts i relation till tidigare forskning samt empirin.

    Studien visar på att respondenternas engagemang och kontrollbehov i hög utsträckning kan förklara orsakerna till varför de väljer att vara tillgängliga för arbete utanför ordinarie arbetstid. Även kraven och förväntningarna från omgivningen och dem själva påverkar respondenternas höga tillgänglighet, detta hör samman med en självuppfyllande profetia. Det gränslösa arbetet resulterar i att respondenternas arbetsliv och privatliv flyter samman, vilket skapar stress och frustration då dygnets alla timmar inte räcker till. Därför tillämpar respondenterna olika copingstrategier för att hantera arbetssituationen. I slutändan blir balansgången mellan arbetsliv och privatliv diffus.

    Samhällets pågående förändring och arbetsplatsens ständiga omorganisation påverkar medarbetaren på flera plan. De höga samhällskostnaderna för psykosocial ohälsa har uppmärksammats flitigt under senare år där offentligt anställda står för en stor del av sjukskrivningarna i Sverige. I detta tar vårt arbete avstamp där uppsatsens övergripande syfte har varit att få en ökad kunskap och djupare förståelse för hur vårdenhetschefer, som arbetar inom offentlig sjukvård ser på sitt ledarskap och vilken typ av ledarskap de anser sig tillämpa. De centrala forskningsfrågorna har varit vilka möjligheter dessa chefer har att tillämpa sitt ledarskap inom den organisatoriska och psykosociala arbetsmiljön, samt hur de själva ser på sitt ledarskap och ansvar.

    Studien visar att cheferna strävar efter relationsanpassade ledarskap, men tidsbrist och en verksamhet som styrs av policy och rutindokument gör det svårt att bedriva den typen av ledarskap. Ansvarsfrågan kring arbetsmiljön visar sig vara relativt oklar, även om chefens ansvar blir större har medarbetaren även ett individuellt ansvar. Studien har en kvalitativ forskningsansats och utgår från åtta semistrukturerade temainriktade forskningsintervjuer som berört den självupplevda processen.

    Begreppet anställningsbarhet förekommer allt mer på den svenska arbetsmarknaden där det hänvisar till en individs möjlighet att få en anställning såväl som förmågan att förbli anställd. Det är upp till den enskilde individen att förbli anställningsbar och att utbilda sig är ett sätt att göra sig attraktiv på arbetsmarknaden. Syftet med denna studie är att belysa ett urval av personalvetarstudenters upplevelser av begreppet anställningsbarhet. I studien undersöktes hur snart nyexaminerade personalvetarstudenter resonerar kring sin egen anställningsbarhet samt huruvida utbildning bidrar till att öka deras anställningsbarhet. Metoden som tillämpades var kvalitativ och vi utgick ifrån en semistrukturerad intervjuguide. Resultatet påvisade av studenterna generellt sätt definierar anställningsbarhet som “någon värd att anställa” och samtliga studenter framhöll utbildning som avgörande för en individs anställningsbarhet. Studenterna menade dock att utbildning inte räcker för att göra en individ attraktiv på arbetsmarknaden utan betonade betydelsen av relevant arbetslivserfarenhet samt personliga egenskaper som social kompetens och flexibilitet.

    Tidigare forskning visar hur anställningsbarhet är ett föränderligt fenomen som fått ökad betydelse på den svenska arbetsmarknaden. Anställningsbarhet kan förstås som en diskurs i samhället gällande hur en individ bör vara för att få arbete, kunna behålla det samt kunna få ett nytt om situationen kräver det. Individer som inte ryms inom diskursen för vad som anses anställningsbart riskerar att exkluderas från arbetsmarknaden. I rekryteringsprocessen operationaliseras anställningsbarhet och rekryteraren har makt att definiera vem som är anställningsbar.

    Syftet med studien är att genom rekryterares upplevelser analysera anställningsbarhet och dess påverkan i rekryteringsprocessen samt undersöka huruvida rekryterares förhållningssätt till fenomenet reproducerar eller utmanar diskursen om anställningsbarhet. Studien genomfördes med ett kvalitativt angreppssätt med semistrukturerade intervjuer. Vidare har studien tagit fasta vid Foucaults konceptualisering av styrningsrationaliteter och relationell makt samt Becks teori om individualiserad riskhantering i det moderna samhället, vilket empirin analyserats utifrån. Resultatet visar att rekryterarnas uppfattning om anställningsbarhet kan förstås i termer av att uppfylla formella krav, uppvisa önskvärda personliga egenskaper samt hålla sig attraktiv på arbetsmarknaden genom att vara flexibel. Uppfattningen tyder på ett individualiserat ansvar för anställningsbarhet. Anställningsbarhetsdiskursen upplevs påverka bedömningen i rekryteringsprocessen i form av ett sorteringsverktyg, där individen konstrueras som anställningsbar respektive icke anställningsbar. Till följd av diskursens påverkan i bedömningen kan rekryterarnas förhållningssätt förstås reproducera den rådande diskursen om anställningsbarhet, snarare än att utmana den.

    En enhetschef har stora krav på sig att generera en bra verksamhet med de anställda de har till sitt förfogande. Verksamheten skall ske effektivt och med god kvalitet. Det gäller att enhetschefen har kompetens, resurser, rimliga krav, kontroll över sitt arbete och en stöttning för att de skall kunna skapa en bra arbetsmiljö. Det ligger således i enhetschefens uppgift att skapa rätt förutsättningar för sina medarbetare, så att de gör sitt yttersta för att uppnå verksamhetens olika mål. En viktig kompetens för en enhetschef är att kunna bilda goda relationer med sina medarbetare. Relationer bidrar till ett gott arbetsklimat som i sin tur genererar en god kvalitet och effektivitet i verksamheten. En svårighet med detta relationsskapande är dock den personliga integriteten.

    Studiens syfte är att undersöka enhetschefernas upplevelser av den personliga integritetens påverkan på arbetsplatsen och den psykosociala arbetsmiljön. Fokus kommer ligga på enhetschefernas förhållningssätt till personlig integritet. Vi vill även undersöka enhetschefernas upplevelser av förutsättningar och stöd gällande skapandet av goda arbetsförhållanden. Vi har genomfört en kvalitativ studie med ett fenomenologiskt perspektiv där vi genomfört intervjuer med åtta enhetschefer från diverse organisationer. Vi har huvudsakligen analyserat empirin utifrån Goffmans Dramaturgiska teori. Med teorin som bas har vi kunnat göra konklusionen att enhetscheferna upplever ett behov av att anpassa sitt sätt och hur de själva framställer sin person beroende på tillfälle och medarbetare. Enhetscheferna är medvetna och gör gränsdragningar för såväl sin egen som medarbetarnas personliga integritet och lägger stor vikt vid att skapa förtroendefulla relationer. I detta arbete har enhetscheferna förutsättningar i form av olika stöd, men även motstånd.

    The IT industry is often characterized by transformation and competition, which makes the need for strategic skill increasingly evident in today’s IT companies. Skilled co-workers’ can be used as a form of back-up, where the variety of skills can be used as a competitive advantage. The purpose of this study is to highlight how a selection of co-workers’ experience competence and skill acquisition in relation to their work situation. This study will also investigate how their managers adapt the skills acquisition to the everchanging market place and their expectations of their employees’ competence and skills acquisitions. The used method in this study was qualitative with output gathered from a semi-structured interview guide.

    The result showed that the co-workers demand on competence were driven by their private interest in their profession. It also concluded that multiple factors interacted with the organization’s skills acquisition investment, something that also was confirmed by previous research. The study also showed that the company adapted by using a learning organizational culture and recruited people with a specific personality trait, while the decisive employees take their own responsibility and sometimes choose to sit at home with work-related tasks. It is recommended that more studies from the employees’ perspective is done, to increase the knowledge and understanding around the different adaptation strategies that is used when it comes to mastering the unstable and shifting market.

    During recent years, Swedish municipalities have had major recruitment problems regarding social workers, especially in child welfare and maintenance support. Previous research shows that high workload and inadequate resources are the main reasons why the social workers leave their jobs as an effect of New Public Management, which has characterized the public sector over the past three decades.

    The purpose of this study is to examine how Swedish social worker students percive and experience social work as a profession. Previous resarch put forward a clear hierarchical status scheme within the social workers professions community in Sweden, which can be seen affecting social worker students by socialization in to the professions structures. The result from this interview study shows that the social worker students belive that there is high workload, too much administrative work and too little room for discretion, which limits the ability to make a difference for the clients. The findings also shows that education and practical experience have a major impact on the way social worker students experience the social work. In addtion; media, society and family contribute to the perceptions of the profession. Furthermore, the students describe that their social environment is crucial in regards to becoming a social worker. For the understanding of perceptions of the social work, the study has  theoretical frameworks of Bourdieu and Goffman in purpose to theorize student socialization into professional structures.

    Det är allmänt känt att olika typer av tidsbegränsade anställningar är otrygga som anställningsform och genererar prekariatets representanter. Inom Kriminalvården finns det en problematik med hög personalomsättning där de löst detta genom att använda sig av personal med en tidsbegränsad anställning. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur människor med en tidsbegränsad anställning inom Kriminalvården upplever sin anställningsform och om de upplever sig ha friheten att styra sin arbetssituation. Det är en kvalitativ studie där tonvikten ligger på att undersöka intervjupersonernas upplevelse av möjlighet till självstyrning och friheten att disponera sin egen tid. Den teori som används i studien utgår från Standings begrepp prekariatet. I studien har sex personer med en tidsbegränsad anställning deltagit och resultatet i undersökningen visar på att anställningsformen upplevs otrygg men är frivillig och ger intervjupersoner möjlighet att styra sin tid på egna villkor. Slutsatsen är att de med en tidsbegränsad anställning tillhör prekariatet genom sina otrygga anställningar men då de värderar högre möjligheten att kunna styra sin arbetssituation väljer de medvetet att fortsätta vara kvar i den anställningsformen.

    I studien undersöks hur offentligt kontrakterade medarbetare på utbildningsföretaget Lernia upplever situationen i samband med att de blir uppsagda med anledning av att deras upphandlade avtal snart löper ut. Empirin utgörs av kvalitativa intervjuer och i resultatet framkom att respondenternas upplevelser skiljde sig beroende på hur de, utifrån organisatoriska och individuella faktorer, tolkade och hanterade hotet mot anställningen. Faktorerna verkade antingen för att öka eller mildra intensiteten av hotet. Ett utbrett socialt kontaktnät eller hög anställningsbarhet ansågs vara faktorer som mildrade hotet, medan de som hade en ansträngd ekonomi eller fått begränsad information kring uppsägningen uttryckte att det påverkade upplevelsen negativt. De medarbetare som ofrivilligt gått med på arbetsvillkoren upplevde situationen, i samband med uppsägningen, mer hotad.  

    I studien undersöks vidare medarbetarnas upplevelser utifrån Armans dödsmetaforer och den psykologiska kontraktsteorin. Genom dessa teorier gick det att urskilja hur respondenter upplevde att processen kring uppsägningen var oansvarig och irrationell. Samtidigt kunde beslutet om uppsägningen antingen skyllas på omvärldsfaktorer eller på Lernia. Organisationsdöden kan därmed liknas med både dödsmetaforen mord och uppoffringsdöd. När organisationsdöden upplevdes likt metaforen mord var det psykologiska kontraktet brutet. Utifrån ett psykologiskt kontraktsbrott kan respondenternas upplevelser, i likhet med mordmetaforen, förstås genom att arbetsgivaren står ansvarig för de felaktiga uppsägningarna och därmed brutit mot sin del av det psykologiska kontraktet. Vilket resulterade i att respondenterna avsiktligt valde att inte uppfylla sin del av kontraktet. De som inte upplevde ett kontraktsbrott ansåg uppsägningen som oundviklig i samband med att uppdraget löper ut och det inte går att förändra. Vidare visade också uppoffringsdöds-metaforen att medarbetaren inte upplevde sig direkt hotad av organisationsdöden, då de hade framtidsalternativ som upplevdes tillfredställande.

    Different career preferences of men and women seems to manifest itself in the choices of educational programs. This is especially true in higher education. This study inquires the horizontal sex segregation where women and men tend to choose educations of different characteristics; women tend to be found in the health welfare department whereas men are to be found in the technology section. The intention of this study is to explore the reasoning and motives that students experience regarding their educational choices. The aim is also to distinguish similarities and differences between the respondents.

    Since the purpose of this study has been to explore experiences and meanings of students educational choices the study used an abductive reasoning based on eight semi-structured interviews with students from vocational educations including both women and men. The theoretical framework is based on Bourdieu’s (1989, 1993) theory regarding habitus as well as Skeggs (2000) gender theory and in addition to this, earlier research in the area.

    The result of the interviews show four thematic areas of students reasoning and motives that has had an impact in their career choice process; instrumental stance, limitations, incitements and external influences. The main findings are that the students have an instrumental attitude towards the content of the education and are restricted by their habitus, gender and horizon for action. The male respondents seems to make their choice based on interest unlike the females who seems to choose something familiar, based on a desire to help others. Our findings also indicates that the respondents closest relatives seems to have an impact on the choices being made.

    I dagens samhälle finns ett stort fokus kring träning och hälsa. Hälsofrämjande åtgärder i form av fysisk aktivitet är något som har blivit väldigt betydelsefullt i syfte att främja folkhälsan och aldrig förr har det tränats på gym eller sprungits så många lopp som i dessa dagar. Detta är något som även företag och organisationer har anammat genom hälsopromotiva åtgärder på arbetsplatserna. Genom ett hälsofrämjande arbete förväntas arbetsgivaren få friska och starka medarbetare, vilket i sin tur förväntas minska sjukdomar och belastningsskador och öka produktiviteten. Men vad anser medarbetaren om detta förfaringssätt? Ser medarbetarna det som något positivt eller är det så att de ser det som ett tvång? Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka medarbetarnas upplevelse av de hälsofrämjande aktiviteter som deras arbetsgivare erbjuder. Uppsatsen bygger på en kvalitativ metod där vi har samlat empiri genom att intervjua sju medarbetare inom olika verksamhetsområden i Falköpings kommun. Valet av respondenter gjordes genom ett så kallat nätverksurval. De inspelade intervjuerna transkriberades och analyserades utifrån en tolkande tematisk innehållsanalys med nyckelordskodning. I studien har vi valt att använda oss av Foucaults disciplineringsteori och Antonovskys teori om KASAM (känsla av sammanhang) som teoretiska utgångspunkter. Studien visade att de medarbetare som deltog över lag har en positiv inställning till arbetsgivarens hälsofrämjande aktiviteter och anser att dessa medverkar till en stärkande effekt på individen. Dessutom framkom att det hälsofrämjande arbetet bidrar till att arbetstagarna får en positiv bild av sin arbetsgivare och att de aktiviteter som erbjuds ses som en ren förmån av de flesta av respondenterna. Ökad medvetenhet kring betydelsen av träning var också något som det hälsopromoverande arbetet bidrog till, enligt respondenterna.

    Due to the globalization in the world the labour market has become more competitive. This study turns to the labour market in Sweden where there has noticeably been a lack of competency regarding engineers and project leaders in the technical industry. In recent times organizations have begun working more actively with empowering their employer brand and the strategies around it, to become more attractive on the labour market. The term employer branding has therefore become more current today to attract the best talents. Employer branding is the work that saturates the whole organization towards becoming an attractive workplace where employees want to stay and potential employees want to be a part of. The aim of the study is to investigate how individuals within the engineering and project leader business think about regarding the choice of an employer.

    Throughout the study, several aspects have been investigated: the recruitment process and the experiences of it, what makes an employer attractive, expectations of an employer, on what basis employees are staying in an organization and thoughts around marketing. The empirical material has been analyzed with coding of the interviews together with research on employer branding. Theories such as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and KASAM (theory of employer's needs  for  belonging)  have  been  applicated,  compared  and  discussed  to  the  result.  The empirical material is gathered by eight semi-structured interviews with a range of engineers and project leaders in different employment levels.

    The result of the study showed the importance of employer branding and that a strong brand and reputation affects and attracts potential employees and makes existent employers stay within the organization. The aspects that attracts engineers and project leaders are very similar but differs in a small extent regarding the size of the company and work tasks. Some central elements that attracts potential employees are opportunities for development, variation in work assignments, good reputation and the knowledge that the organization take care of their employers by offering support and well-being.

    HR-arbetet har gått ifrån att fokuseras på personaladministration till affärsverksamheten och företagets personalpolitiska strategi. Ulrich och Brockbank ansåg att HR-arbetet kunde göras mer effektivt. De utvecklade sina tankar till ett koncept, HR-transformation, som blivit vida spritt globalt. Budskapet var att HR måste kunna affärslivets språk och perspektiv för att kunna vara värdeskapande men inte tvärtom. Verkligheten visar att planerad HR-strategi inte alltid är lika med genomförd HR-strategi. Vi har valt att förlägga vår studie till Volvo och avdelningen Group IT. Valet är främst baserat på att företagets HR-funktion genomgått en HR- transformation i samband med att konceptet var nytt.

    Denna studies syfte är att med utgångspunkt i teorin om HR-transformation beskriva hur en HR Business Partners roll upplevs fungera i praktiken. Vi undersöker vad det innebär det att arbeta som HR Business Partner på Volvo och vilka värden chefer respektive HR Business Partner upplever att rollen bidrar med till Volvo. Den forskning som vi redogjort för handlar om olika aktörers syn på begreppet värde och om värdeskapande HR-arbete för chefer och HR Business Partners. För att kunna svara på våra forskningsfrågor och komma närmare chefers och HR Business Partners upplevelser och tankar har vi valt att använda oss av en kvalitativ forskningsmetod. Under våra intervjuer framkom olika perspektiv på målet med HR Business Partner-rollen. Ett viktigt mål med rollen är att leverera effektivt stöd till den del av organisationen HR Business Partner supporterar och i olika frågor. Upplevelsen är att närheten till verksamheten och det operativa stödet är värdefullt. Det finns både liknande och olika syn på andra faktorer som levererar värde. Med tydligare kommunikation om värdeskapande HR skulle cheferna bättre veta vad de kan förvänta sig av sin HR Business Partner. Och vice versa. Utökad dialog och samarbete skulle indirekt ge ringar på vattnet och ge mervärde för medarbetarna Volvo Group IT.

    Det gränslösa arbetet har kommit att prägla arbetslivet allt mer och innebär en ökad flexibilitet för individen gällande när, var och hur arbete utförs. Denna studie syftar till att undersöka vilka för- och nackdelar individer upplever med det gränslösa arbetet samt hur de hanterar det. Vidare har även studien undersökt hur det gränslösa arbetet påverkar individernas välbefinnande. Studien är genomförd på åtta tjänstemän på ett kunskapsintensivt företag via kvalitativa semistrukturerade intervjuer. Individualiseringsteorin och krav-kontroll-stöd har tillsammans med tidigare forskning inom området använts för att förklara upplevelsen av det gränslösa arbetslivet.

    Studien visar att det gränslösa arbetet möjliggör en stor frihet i respondenternas flexibla arbetsform genom att de kan styra när och var man vill arbeta, samt att de lättare kan kombinera arbetsliv och privatliv vilket de anser är positivt. Det gränslösa arbetet medför dock en diffus arbetssituation som bland annat innebär otydliga förväntningar gällande tillgänglighet, vilket upplevs tämligen problematiskt. Vidare framkommer det att respondenterna har en hög arbetsbelastning som bidrar till att de arbetar mycket utöver ordinarie arbetstid. Respondenterna använder sig av olika strategier för att hantera sitt gränslösa arbete då vissa har ett större behov av att göra en åtskillnad mellan arbete och privatliv än andra. Överlag så upplever respondenterna att de mår bra i sin gränslösa arbetssituation även om den till viss del innebär tendenser till stress och frustration.

    Abstract [en]

    The World Trade Centre terror attack in 2001 changed the world and with it the conditions for logistics world-wide. The aftermath to the attack brought needed attention to the vulnerability of modern supply chains. This vulnerability can in many cases be described as “unwanted effects” in the supply chain, caused by either internal or external forces that create disturbances larger than the supply chain is designed to handle. The disturbance can be unintentional or deliberate and also either legal or illegal. This thesis addresses the problem of deliberately caused (antagonistic) and illegal action against legal logistics. There are basically two types of illegal and antagonistic threats to logistics, theft/sabotage and smuggling. The theft/sabotage problem is directly aimed toward the logistics activities, while smuggling abuses the logistics system for illegal purposes. The reasons behind these problems can vary from case to case as well as the different countermeasures to prevent these problems to occur. This thesis addresses only this problem in the transport network and sees the network as a part of a supply chain. In each part of the transport network there is a certain risk associated with the goods. All these risks together form the total risk for the transport or the transport network. The research in this thesis follows the tradition in logistics to use a system approach to treat the research questions. The system approach also implies a top-down perspective on the system, or in this case the two systems, but the research questions address only the cross-over points between the two systems. The main method for this thesis is deductive. Both primary and secondary data are used to support the deductive and theoretical conclusions. This thesis is also based on the result of five different studies within this topic. The perpetrators’ decision process is the key issue to understanding the usage of antagonistic gateways in the transport network. The preferred risk management approach is therefore contextual instead of statistic, when preventing the usage of antagonistic gateways. In other words, the countermeasures need to be based on an understanding of this decision process, the antagonistic dynamics of potential perpetrators. This understanding is to a large part also an understanding of the context in which the perpetrators act. The difference in perpetrator context is easily described with the difference between regular cargo thieves and ideology-driven perpetrators or terrorists. The thieves are after the monetary value that the cargo represents, therefore they prefer to steal high-value, untraceable and highly demanded products. The ideological perpetrator or terrorist wishes to make a statement with the attack, therefore he will sabotage products, which will give the statement attention and (if possible) understanding for it. If a potential terrorist desires to finance an upcoming terrorist attack by means of cargo theft, the perpetrator will act as a regular cargo thief. This difference in perpetrator context is vital for applying the right type of countermeasures in the transport network. Security against these types of antagonistic threats in the transport network aims to alter the contextual perception of the network and thereby reduce the problem of antagonistic gateways.

    The purpose of this paper is to analysis and present that antagonistic threats against supply chain activities are wicked problems. The research is based on a system-theoretical approach, which emphasizes a holistic view instead of the characteristics of the different parts. The research method used in this paper is deductive desk research. This research is mainly theoretical, and the findings are contributions to the development of theoretical models and understanding in order to further move the scientific understanding about antagonistic threats against supply chain activities. The main reason behind this is the relationship between threats and countermeasures that are complex and contextual depended. There are several types of crime that can be linked to the logistics function and processes. This paper does not address the problems from a legal viewpoint. This paper presented descriptions of four different antagonistic threats, namely theft, terrorism, smuggling and piracy. The nature of these four different antagonistic threats is then analyzed with regards to the wicked problem description, which leads to the conclusion that antagonistic threats are better described as wicked problems.

The aftermath of the attack brought needed attention to the vulnerability of modern supply chains. This thesis addresses the antagonistic threats that exploit the vulnerability in a supply chain. Antagonistic threats are a limited array of risks and uncertainties and can be addressed with risk management tools and strategies. There are three key demarcations between antagonistic threats and other risks and uncertainties: deliberate (caused), illegal (defined by law), and hostile (negative impact, in this thesis, for transport network activities). This thesis makes a theoretical contribution to the usage of theories from criminology in supply chain risk management to handle antagonistic threats against the transport network. The recognition that antagonistic threats toward the transport network are a problem leads to verification of the research questions from the background and the theoretical framework. This is done to place or relate the research questions closer to the context. Furthermore, it leads to the conclusion that the answers may or may not contain competing and/or incompatible parts which differ depending on the perspective or viewpoint at the moment. One of the most important things to understand is that antagonistic threats toward freight always have been a feature in both business and politics. The different functions and goals for all stakeholders mean that all stakeholders and actors may use similar methods to manage antagonistic threats but the effects and consequences will change according to the circumstances. The system approach in this thesis is a soft-system thinking where reality is described in subjective terms and the whole system has the distinctive trait of vague or undefined boundaries between system components and the surrounding environment. Therefore, this thesis uses a complex system approach in which paradoxes and bounded rationality describes the system’s behaviour. This thesis defines the legal descriptions and criminal threats against and within supply chain management activities that entail both the systems context and boundaries. Managing of the antagonistic threats through the risk management perspective is separated into two sides, pre-event and post-event measures, which means the system needs to be robust and resilient, using logistics terms. It should be robust to automatically handle small risks (normally with high likelihood and low impact). The system also needs resilience in order to adapt, improvise, and overcome any disturbance greater than the system’s robustness can handle. Both robustness and its resilience can constitute of the full range of prevention, mitigation, and transferring tools and methods. Regardless of which perspective or viewpoint is chosen for analysing the problem, the same basic set of tools and methods are valid, but in practical use they need to be adapted to the actors’ needs and wants for managing their exposure to antagonistic threats.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to analysis the risk for antagonistic threats against transports in EU in order to find patterns and trends. The research is based on a system-theoretical approach, which emphasizes a holistic view instead of the characteristics of the different parts. The research method used in this paper is deductive. The analysis is based on official statistics over antagonistic threats against transports in EU within a frame of reference consisting of theories from supply chain risk management and criminology. There is no silver bullet for solving antagonistic threats as it has always been a part of the business. Within this understanding there are many changes in hot spots, modus operandi, theft endangered objects and handling methods during time, but the basic theoretical frame of reference is still more or less the same. The geographically limitation to the EU is done of practical reasons whiles the frame of reference can be used globally for analysis antagonistic threats against transports. This research is limited by the lack of reliable information sources about criminal activities against logistics business. Secondary sources, like official crime statistics, are at best untrustworthy but more likely filled with large parts of hidden statistics. By using several different and independent official statistical sources and analysis the results within a common frame of reference can the validity of the research be secure. The theoretical framework is based on the theory of routine activity and its implications for logistics. This theory explains why the transport network produces the same theft opportunity over and over again.

    Purpose – The aim of this paper is to analyze and explain why cargo theft continues to occur in the transport network despite all implemented countermeasures. Design/methodology/approach – The research is based on a logical deductive hypothesis using theories from several scientific fields. This hypothesis is then tested empirically. Credibility is substantiated with the use of several independent official statistical sources and verified with both open-ended qualitative interviews and a quantitative, comparative, geographically controlled survey. Findings – Theft risk arises from different theft opportunities that will always be present in the transport network. The theory of crime displacement provides one likely explanation as to why the absolute reduction, instead of a theft pattern alteration, is very difficult to achieve. The result in this paper substantiates research results in criminology that indicate that causality in crime displacement is hard to establish. Research limitations/implications – This research is limited by the lack of reliable information sources about criminal activities against logistics business. Secondary sources, like official crime statistics, are at best untrustworthy but more likely filled with large parts of hidden statistics. Practical implications – The common-sense feeling about the crime displacement theory that exists in the logistics business needs to be modified. This paper maintains that the understanding of the relationship between potential perpetrators and theft preventing measures is a key issue to reduce theft problems within the transport network. Originality/value – This paper is a step towards bringing theories from criminology into the scientific field of logistics and supply chain risk management.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose of this paper This paper examines the differences in logistics system design depending on the legality of the supply chains. The legality of the goods/actors is a vital factor when taking the goods from point-of-origin to the end user. This paper uses different logistics theories to provide a likely theoretical explanation of how and in what way the legality of the supply chain affects logistics system setups. Design/methodology/approach This paper takes a macro-perspective on the differences between legal and illegal logistics activities depending on the legality of supply chains. The validation of this paper is based on three different structures: theoretical frame of reference, analysis of official reports and two different cases studies. This paper uses methodology triangulation and dual perspective to describe the interaction between illegal supply chains and the legal world’s preventing efforts. The key analytical feature for this paper is the risk for detection element. Findings Several supply chains use the transport network services and therefore it is not always possible to separate legal from illegal supply chains. The illegal supply chains have a unique constraint in comparison to the legal setup: the risk for detection. The detection risk factor is one of the greatest logistics constraints on the illegal flow of goods and it is in this constraint that the professionalism of the actors is found. Research limitations/implications (if applicable) The research is based on secondary sources like official statistics and interviews with security and customs personnel. Practical implications (if applicable) The triad logistics setup provides a good theoretical foundation to understand how the legal transport network is abused by criminal businesses. This paper illustrates that a filtration of information regarding the shipped products is the primary tool to use to successfully abuse the legal transport network. What is original/value of paper This paper uses well known theories from logistics research to both describe and explain the illegal supply chains.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose - To describe the seasonal patterns of reported cargo theft value and frequency in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) countries with respect to different transport chain locations. Design/methodology/approach - This study is based on a system-theoretical approach, which emphasizes a holistic rather than an atomistic view. The research method used in this paper is deductive; the analysis is based on the data taken from IIS (Incident Information Service), a transport-related crime database of TAPA (Transported Asset Protection Association) EMEA; and the result is analyzed and discussed within a frame of reference based on supply chain risk management and criminology theories. Findings - There are seasonal variations in cargo thefts at different transport chain locations during particular months of the year as well as days of the week; however, each transport chain location has a different pattern. Indeed, hot spots, modus operandi, theft-endangered objects, and handling methods change frequently during the period under study. However, the basic theoretical frame of reference continues to be the same. Research limitations/implications - This study is based on theoretical deduction using official statistics regarding antagonistic threats. Its geographical limitation to the EMEA is owing to the limitations of the utilized database, although the frame of reference can be applied to analyze antagonistic threats against transport chains globally. Practical implications - This study is limited by the content and classification within the TAPA EMEA IIS database; nevertheless, this database is the best available one, with reports originating mainly from the industry itself, as different TAPA members anonymously report their losses. Originality/value - This paper is one of the first on supply chain risk management that uses actual crime statistics reported by the industry itself to analyze the occurrence of cargo theft by focusing on the value of the vehicle/goods stolen from transport chain locations.
